Renteria to Sox

4y, $40m, in what right now appears to be one of the more rational contracts this off-season.
So there goes one alternate plan for the M’s if they don’t get Beltre (or land 14 more 1B/LF/DH types).

Does anybody know what incentive structure if any is built into Sexson’s contract? If Bavasi didn’t include some kind of game-played clause…oy.
My favorite part in all of this is still the fact that last week Bavasi cited the Glaus contract as being what threw the entire market and value system out of whack and then he goes out the next week and validates it by signing Sexson for more money. If ever two players were comparable, its Glaus and Sexson. Don’t see how Bavasi could have missed that one.
comparable in the way they play? sure, comparable in numbers, hardly, all glaus has done is digress imo, sexson take away one injury year has improved in many statistics, im incredibly glad hes not here
perhaps he was afraid of signing an ex-Angel
After seeing the M’s play all of those games with Seattle when they tried to get an even better deal in 96 (97? I forget when), it amuses me to see a city try to do the same thing to MLB.
#103, glaus actually walks. His numbers are off because he’s was injured most of this year and the year before. Given the option between a healthy glaus and a healthy sexson, i’ll take glaus any day
#99 — hey, I went to an Angels game back in June. It was eerily full of Red Sox fans. They easily outnumbered the Angels fans. And we got picked on for wearing Mariners player shirts (they joked about not letting us into the park, even though I said “But Hasegawa used to be on the Angels!”)
I honestly don’t remember anything about the ethnic makeup of the fanbase though. It didn’t seem that different from Safeco, except possibly fewer Japanese folks.
Drew wants $50/5.
And we sign Sexson.
GHAHHHHHHH.
Oh, in other Red Sox news, they signed John Halama today. Neat!
We should have signed John Halama to that contract, and stopped pursuing Ron Villone.
Are Halama and Villone not virtual carbon copies of each other? Lefty, mid 30 spot starters who stink as starters but do OK in relief.
If the report on Drew asking for 5-at-50 is true, then Bavasi & Co. signing Sexson at 4-at-50 instead is soo . . . stupid, there aren’t words enough, obscene or not, to accurately descripe the decision.
—Course if the Ms go ahead and pick up J. D. also, then I’ll just have to shrug and get on with livin’.
