Injury notes

A few quick injury notes:
Scott Atchison is having some pain in his elbow and is going to be shut down for a few weeks. You know the drill by now.
Ryan Christianson channeled the spirit of Chris Snelling and, just as he was finally showing that his injuries may be behind him, broke his finger today and is out for two months.

*yawn* What else is new?
Is there anyway to permanently kill the spirit of Chris Snelling, or short of that, trade it to another team for a spirit to be named later?
With Atchison gone, how do we plan on carrying 8 relievers?!
Two months for a broken finger? Chop it off!
#2 lol. Another M’s pitcher down. You know, if, in a neighborhood somewhere, there is a cancer cluster, an investigation starts which eventually leads to a lawsuit — bad water. I see an injury cluster with pitchers here, but no invesigation. I’m not blaming anyone, but the local sports writers don’t seem to notice or even care. Moreover, we hear nothing from the front office about this — sort like a hohum attitude.
Have you seen this Mariners news site? Pretty neat.

Thanks! That is kind of cool. Way better looking than the prosportsdaily page.
#3 – My guess is that the “Tacoma shuttle” will be quite busy this season. We’ll open the season with at least 3 pitchers on the DL (Soriano, Piniero, Achison) and possibly 4 (Guardado).
In terms of injuries, it seems that Beltre tweaked his hamstring stretching out that inside the park homerun yesterday.
According to team sources this evening, Christianson is expected to miss 3-5 weeks, not two months.
When I brought up two months, I was asked “for a broken index finger?”
May 1 is the target date for RC.
Oh, and, the team won’t talk much about Atchison.
Could mean nothing, but it could mean that they think it could be something serious.
Since Ryan Christianson is hurt, who is going to be the other catcher for the Tacoma Rainiers? Will Kit Pellow backup Wiki Gonzalez ’til Christianson is healed?
Off-Topic: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2021157 It’s a good article.
Ryan Christianson didn’t break his finger. The batter took a big swing and smacked Christianson’s finger!!!
Well, actually, I was thinking …. can he sue the guy??!! 😛
I was at the game yesterday and the play christianson got hurt on was a hit and run.He called a pitchout and the pitcher didnt get it out far enough the batter castillo took a swing and hit his hand this poor kid is cursed like snelling its sad……..
Speaking of the bullpen…Rowland-Smith was just returned. This could be a bit of a stretch, but he pitched pretty good during ST (I know, I know, ST stats mean nothing), and he’s left handed! He is joining the big league camp… could he be an outside (real outside)option?
As far as Tacoma backup catchers, I would guess Rivera or Moon would start the season in Tacoma until Christianson is healthy… Maybe Pellow, but he is more of your third string catcher to give manager a little more flexibility in close games…
The TNT is reporting that Atchison has a strained flexor bundle, the same injury that caused Pineiro to miss two months last year.
The article also floats the possibility of Bucky Jacobsen being placed on the 60 day DL. Uh oh.
Re 15:
It also says “Rafael Soriano could be a candidate.” I would be willing to bet almost everything I own that he is a LOCK to be on the 60DL if we need roster room for Opening Day… I wouldn’t put much stock in that.
#14 Good catch, David. I hadn’t realized that Smith was returned and in fact, he was scheduled to pitch yesterday for Minnesota. But a check of the ESPN transaction wire reveals he has been returned to the M’s. Maybe the M’s will give him a look in the next week or so. Minor league lefty Cesar Jimenez struck out 2 of his 3 batters yesterday in the M’s game.
I really don’t know why they’re so down on George Sherrill. He’s had one bad outing this spring but did a nice job last year. I would have thought he’d almost be a lock (but it appears he isn’t).

DJC: I think the implication is that if they keep Sele or Nelson, they need to create one roster spot; if they keep Sele and Nelson, they need two.
I agree with you that Soriano probably destined for the 60 day DL, but someone else — Atchison or Bucky — might be as well. The P-I is reporting the same thing.
The 60-day DL for Bucky isn’t surprising. We knew his knee would keep him out at least through April, and the DL became active at some point during ST, so a retroactive move wouldn’t cost us any time – just free up a roster spot.
And we need one if we want to fiddle with Thornton more.
The same goes for Soriano.
It seems to me that the 8-man (huh?!) bullpen for the first two weeks (until Piniero comes off the DL) will be: Villone, Franklin, Nelson, Mateo, Shiggy, Putz, Guardado and either Sherrill or Thornton. I don’t know what that means for the 40-man roster. I’m sure if there is a way to utilize the 60-day DL to not have to have guys clear waivers before being sent down, the M’s will use it. They don’t seem ready to give up on anyone yet.
In non-injury related news, the M’s sent Jose Lopez to the minors today (along with Jamal Strong and Cha Seung Baek). Guess that whole thing about Lopez “forcing Hargrove’s hand” at SS was a sham…
I did not see that news. Is Greg Dobbs really going to be our 25th man? All that are left are him, Santiago, or Gutierrez, correct? Oops, I guess Gil is still in camp, but I wrote him off weeks ago.
Can I ask a favor? The next time someone reports some transactions news, would you please either a) cite your source; or b) better yet, supply the link to the item.
Thanks.

Boy does this roster need Bucky.
