Game 53, Devil Rays at Mariners

DMZ · June 3, 2005 at 7:03 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

LHP Casey Fossum v RHP Aaron Sele.

I feel beat up already.

On Lou’s yearly return: I’ve already complained about the team’s snub of Randy Johnson, but what about Lou Piniella? Doesn’t he deserve anything for his time here? Even as some kind of compensation for being the most frequently badly-typed name during his time (Pinella, Pinnella, etc)?

I went to the game tonight and got my nesting doll
and left. I am going tomorrow night to cheer for Lou.

  3. Dead Ball Tim on June 3rd, 2005 9:17 pm

Um yeah… 2nd & 3rd nobody out, down by four. Uggggly.

  4. Matt Williams on June 3rd, 2005 9:19 pm

2nd basemen aren’t supposed to hit well. Bret is just taking the traditional approach.

But that’s only because they’re traditionally supposed to play defense. Boone seems to have forgotten that double plays are even possible, let alone common.

I don’t have the luxury of seeing this game on TV. How did two simultaneous steals occur?

  6. msb on June 3rd, 2005 9:19 pm

Jim Moore covered the M’s Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser on thursday:

“Leaving the range and heading to the clubhouse, I spot Bret Boone
arriving and challenge him to a long-drive contest. I’m holding my Cleveland Launcher, which is prepared for another dimple-crushing liftoff.

“Let’s go,” I say, motioning to the range.

“Yeah, right,” Boone says. “What? You want me to use my wedge? I’ve
got a 1-iron that goes farther than anything you can hit.”

“Is that right?” I say. “I reached a 360-yard par-4 in Hawaii last
    month.”

“Probably downhill downwind,” Boone says correctly.

“Yeah, well … ” I was about to swing at his ankles and tell him that
Jeff Cirillo’s average is 50 points higher than his when Boone
    interrupted me.

    “You’re a writer, dude,” he says. “And I’m a professional athlete …
    or used to be.”

    Fuggggly is more appropriate here.

  8. G-Man on June 3rd, 2005 9:21 pm

    4-9-6 on that fielder’s choice.

  9. zzyzx on June 3rd, 2005 9:22 pm

I wonder if that was the first 4-9-6 play in history.

  10. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:25 pm

Well, we learned Putz should not come into pitch with men already on base. No we have learned he should not come into pitch with no men on base. Where does that leave him. Ankiel, anyone?

  11. Matt Williams on June 3rd, 2005 9:27 pm

Oh god. What the hell kind of trivia is that?

“Which former Mariner was traded for Lou…” That was fewer than three years ago and huge news. What is this, “make everyone feel special” day?

  12. Matt Williams on June 3rd, 2005 9:28 pm

    Gah, what current Mariner.

Yeah, someone started feeding me wine when I started getting grumpy over the game so my brain isn’t at 100%. Sorry.

  13. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:28 pm

Okay, Morse takes one for the team. Did the commentator say the M’s need a whole lotta base runners — really?

  14. Vaughn Street on June 3rd, 2005 9:29 pm

Well if you think the answer is Randy Winn, you probably shouldn’t be feeling too special.

  15. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:29 pm

Okay, 2 games and 5 GIDP for M’s.

  16. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:31 pm

The A’s just swept the Rays… you didn’t expect the M’s to do the same, did you?

  17. edgarfan on June 3rd, 2005 9:32 pm

What bugs me about that trivia question is that Winn was NOT traded for Pineilla; the M’s allowed the Rays to sign Lou as manager contingent on being allowed to trade ANTONIO PEREZ for Randy Winn! Perez was in the Griffey deal, and Peter Gammons, IIRC, once said that people would be saying that Cincinnati was crazy for giving up Perez for Griffey. Didn’t quite work out that way, did it?

  18. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:35 pm

Buglovsky put the Tacoma game out of reach: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 3 R. Today Buglovsky = Putz.

  19. Matt Williams on June 3rd, 2005 9:35 pm

Ok, that’s true. And releasing Lou from his contract wasn’t even a “trade”. They should have phrased it as “Who did the M’s aquire by allowing Lou Piniella to sign with Tampa Bay.”

/learned to accept and decipher poorly-phrased questions early in nerd bowl and honed his skills with standardized tests and most of college

  20. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:36 pm

Wow! I didn’t know Shiggy could jump so high.

  21. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:40 pm

the M’s batters are sure in a hurry to end this game.

  22. drjeff on June 3rd, 2005 9:44 pm

How come they don’t let Angie Melnick do color? Rizs would be more nervous with her than he is with the Junior Broadcasters. Might break up the monotony a bit.

  23. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:45 pm

I guess everyone has tuned out already.

  24. drjeff on June 3rd, 2005 9:46 pm

Wow… Ichiro! Nothing like a single over the right fielder’s head and off the wall.

  25. JeffS on June 3rd, 2005 9:47 pm

I think Angie is on some serious medication… she just seems nuts.

  26. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:47 pm

Well, there can be some good news from this lose. If Thornton does really poorly again, his stock will further lower, which means he’ll be closer to a release.

  27. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:49 pm

Damn! I wanted to see another outfield assist.

  28. drjeff on June 3rd, 2005 9:50 pm

#124: It seems like they told her to “loosen up” or something, fighting the M’s-induced stupor. Holding viewers who have heard “the sacks are full of Devil Rays” more than once in a lifetime can’t be easy.

  29. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:51 pm

Damn Thronton! Give up a bases clearing double! Do your duty!

  30. ray on June 3rd, 2005 9:53 pm

Can’t believe Thornton got outta that. And Boone almost screwed it up. Sad, when I see Boone make errors now, I just laugh.

  31. ChrisK on June 3rd, 2005 9:56 pm

I think Rizzs has mentioned the “hometown kid” Orvella about 63 times before he even entered the game. Now that he’s in the game, the local boy overkill will be too much to take.

  32. Matt Williams on June 3rd, 2005 9:59 pm

Sad, when I see Boone make errors now, I just laugh.

Me too. But that’s just because I know the Safeco scorer will call them hits.

  33. aaron c. on June 3rd, 2005 10:01 pm

For your own sake, kid, throw a strike.

    Trust me.

  34. ray on June 3rd, 2005 10:01 pm

    Take it Boone!

  35. mattagee on June 3rd, 2005 10:02 pm

sheesh. i swear, make a team with Kenny Rogers, Raffi Palmiero and Doug Waechter…

    Waechter ….

  36. ray on June 3rd, 2005 10:02 pm

I think the fans are actually booing the pitcher. Okay Boone

  37. MoscowJeff on June 3rd, 2005 10:03 pm

It looked like Orvella was about to be strangled by Lou before getting Boone to pop out.

  38. edgarfan on June 3rd, 2005 10:04 pm

Man, this game reminds me of a line from George Will, on growing up a Cubs fan:

“Well, with the bases loaded here, if the batter can just get on base, then the tying run will be on deck…”

  39. Dead Ball Tim on June 3rd, 2005 10:05 pm

The M’s of May appeared. And that’s the ballgame.

  41. aaron c. on June 3rd, 2005 10:06 pm

“Everybody’s a good baseball player, it’s just how they handle the pressure of the game.”

So THAT’S why I work at a movie theater. If only I could handle the pressure.

  42. Dead Ball Tim on June 3rd, 2005 10:06 pm

This will soon be over. Next week we won’t even remember who pitched.

  44. MoscowJeff on June 3rd, 2005 10:13 pm

I know that it is all relative but it is annoying when Matt Morrison in the post-game show refers to J.J. Putz as a “young player.”

  45. aaron c. on June 3rd, 2005 10:16 pm

I think the real issue is that Matt Morrison is relatively annoying.

  46. Felixfastfreight on June 3rd, 2005 11:00 pm

relative to what? Morrison is annoying relative to just about anything i can think of…never thought i’d miss Rich Waltz this much…
then again, never thought i’d have need to

I like it. Rizz sitting with a pregnant former pro-ball outfielder, noted for colorful language, crashing into walls, chewing tobacco & at least one bean brawl. That might give you the Buhner mindset, with more experience at doing color work….

JeffS said:”I think Angie is on some serious medication… she just seems nuts.”

    they call them hormones…

It was EMPTY there last night. I don’t think they broke even 20K.

Sides of the terrace level were vacant, and you could easily find an empty seat behind the plate.

Kids, buy the cheapest seats you can, because you can sit anywhere you want now.

#4 Matt Williams said: “I can see losing arm strength, but losing accuracy seems less likely.”

Why just last Sunday at Tampa Bay, Winn, on two separate plays, made very poor throws from short left field with runners trying to score from second on singles. Both times the runners likely would have stopped at third if anyone else were in LF. Rizzs was calling the broadcast — on the first one “The throw is up the line!”. On the second one — “Up the line AGAIN!” Ron Fairly was aghast, saying “You’d think he’d be able to throw him out cause look where that runner is (not even to 3B) when Winn lets go of the ball…”

If Randy Winn supposedly costs the team only 3-5 runs all year with his pathetic arm (as we have been led to believe), 3 of them came in that one game. Not only did he not throw either runner out, but slow runners (Josh Phelps and Alex Gonzalez) advanced to second on the throws, leading to more runs (or potential runs)…
