    How much drop off do you see in the ‘D’ when Lopez comes in for Boonie? I heard it’s going to be tomorrow night (from the broadcase). Also, is Rick Rizzs calling everyone ‘The Kid’? I’ve heard him refer to Morse, Rivera, and Lopez by that nickname. I can’t wait for the Mariners to bring up ‘The Kid’ Hernandez, or maybe [DOYLE]. Our whole team may have a new unofficial nickname if we’re not careful…

    Seeing as how Boone is pretty bad in the field at this point in his career, I’d say pretty much none.

    Lopez is still basically a rookie and is now playing 2B almost full time in an obvious effort to ready him for Boone’s position. Boone is still a steady defender (so was Olerud last year) so I think there would be some measurable drop off in defense. Maybe the same amount of drop that we have seen between our opening day SS and now (Morse). The question is, will it be made up in terms of other tangibles (obp, development, etc.) or intangibles (send a message to vets, enthusiasm, gate draw, etc.). I say, it’s worth it to do it but no doubt the Mariners would have a tough time justifying chugging down the remaining value of Boone’s contract.

    #58 I’m hoping that with the way Morse is playing that it will give the FO more reasons to start bringing young guys up. Especially if Lopez shows that he is ready. This reliance on over the hill veterans is just stupid.

    Boone a steady defender? from what i’ve seen, its not just that he’s lost a serious amount of range, but he’s screwing up some fairly routine plays. Lopez may have below average range for a ss, but i presume he will have adequate to slightly above average range for 2nd. that, and he has a left side arm, so he should handle 2nd alot easier than short. I havn’t had the chance to see him in Tacoma, but from the reports i’ve heard, moving Lopez in for him at this point may be an upgrade on defense as well as offense.

    Conor – re #27, about two thirds of the way through the game they suddenly revoked one of the Mariners’ errors. The people sitting around me were also dumbfounded that Boone’s not-being-quite-high-up-enough could be considered an error, and sure enough, that’s the one that was revoked (but Lopez’s throw was still there.)

    Sometimes it astounds me what gets called an error and what gets called an “infield single”.

    I was sad that Cammy couldn’t play, but glad they let him bring the lineup out to the plate at the beginning of the game — he got the applause that was due him. Lots of Cameron shirts at the park tonight, too.

    Whee, so tomorrow, Pedro vs. Ryan Franklin. Is there even a point in betting on who will win? Maybe it’d be worth betting on how few hits the Mariners will get.

    Only thing is, Olerud went on a hot streak when he was picked up by the Yankees

    Hot streaks can happen to anyone. He hit .312 in August, but was back down to .253 in September. Even when he was on a “hot streak”, he wasn’t hitting with any power: .390 slugging in August, actually up to .398 in September.

    and isn’t doing too shabby this year on the Red Sox.

    In exactly 27 plate appearances. He was a full-time player with Seattle; now he’s a pinch hitter.

    Admittedly, he’d look good on Seattle’s bench right now.
