Boone or Moyer could be Padre-bound

Jeff · June 27, 2005 at 1:01 am · Filed Under Mariners

We’ve been discussing in the comments how the talk of the post-game show was about a potential trade of Bret Boone to the Padres. Shannon Drayer and others said the stadium was abuzz with the rumor, and Bob Finnigan adds to that chorus.

Smoke being a common indicator of fire, it seems there’s at least something to this. Also, there have been multiple trades between the two clubs in the recent past, including the casting off of unwanted players.

The word from Finnigan is that the Boone talks “had gotten off track at some point before yesterday’s game.” A less likely scenario would be a deal for Jamie Moyer.

No word on what the Padres would be giving up, and I wouldn’t get my hopes up. The cupboard is thin.

Added by Dave: Most rumors have the deal being a variation of Boone for RHP Justin Germano, an overachieving control artist. Think Cha Baek with a curve ball.

How come they don’t replay the Cleveland championship series right after this one? Game 4, 5, 6? Why don’t they replay those?

I hate ’95 nostalgia even if I do love the ‘dome.

#150: Thanks for checking; memory fades. If Scioscia had managed NY in 1995, things might have been different. Scioscia no doubt gained more confidence in K-Rod when he mowed down the Yankee hitters in Game 2.

My central point isn’t that I think Buck was right, just that it’s one of those decisions many “baseball men” would never second guess — like leaving Pedro in the game after he was burnt toast. (I’m a Red Sox fan; I literally got no sleep that night.)

If I’m being a jerk, I apologize, but having just read all the comments in this thread I’ve noticed it a few times, and in general it happens with alarming frequency. So, here goes:

Sorry. It’s a pet peeve of mine.

Now I’ll probably hit the post button and realize I’ve misspelled another word, and I’ll look silly. So it goes.

Sorry. It’s a way for me to satisfy my grammar Nazi nature; a result of a horrible accident at a spelling bee involving a tube of toothpaste and the late John Wayne.

Now I’ll probably hit the post button and realize I’ve misspelled another word, and I’ll look silly. So it goes.

No grammar or misspellings, but I did fix your little typo there. =)

Kelly Shoppach for Eddie Guardado? Forget that. The Boston Globe had an article where they briefly mentioned friggin’ Ron Villone for Shoppach! I’d do that deal in a second.

Guardardo should be in high demand from any contender in need of bullpen help and should yield at least a couple of prime prospects.

How about Guardardo to the Braves for Andy Marte and Wilson Betemit?

Or the Mets for Lastings Milledge and Yusmeiro Petit?

Andy Marte is probably the best prospect in baseball. He’s their Felix Hernandez. Would you trade Felix for Eddie Guardado?

What you’re expecting in return for Guardado is totally out of line with his actual value.

Of course, it’s probably out of line, but desperate teams do desperate/dumb things. (I.E. The Mets trading Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano). It won’t hurt the Mariners to ask, especially given that this year is a “seller’s market” if you believe the pundits.

    The Braves aren’t desperate.

Based on the Mets’ track record, we should ask for David Wright– hell, trade Guardado, Boone, Moyer, Winn *and* Ibanez for him if they ask.
