For Felix and Meche I’d have to take Derrek Lee or Albert Pujols or Vlad Guerrero or A-Rod (& Cash)
Plus pitching prospects are a different story. Joe Randa just netted Germano and Chick, which makes me think we could get quite a nice little package for Randy Winn.
Re: 18
Ok, ya want good hitters without tons of power as an example?
Ichiro
Damon
Nomar
Those three good enough?
Betancourt is fine.
But yeah, calling him up now doesn’t make any sense, unless you’ve just traded Morse, Pineiro and cash to Tampa for Aubrey Huff.
Tell me Corco, given the state of the pitcher market, do you think it’s possible, not probable mind you, but possible that an offer that good could happen? I mean, really, Ponson? He sucks and he’s an ass. I’d want to find out. You can always pass on an offer that isn’t good enough. By the way, listening to the post-game it’s all, like, Willie’s gotta play. He’s the heart and soul and blah, blah, blah.
That is a really tough call to make, saying that Team X would be willing to give up Superstar Y for Pitching Prospect Z… so I am going to decline to comment and just say that anything is possible.
That was a comment. I’m just saying that given that the market is… well, stupid, and that Felix is THE top prospect and Meche > Ponson, then I gotta wonder.
Was anyone surprised that Hargrove did not send ace basestealer Willie B. to try and get 2nd base with Morse at the plate. Morse singled on his 4 pitch, so there was opportunity, and even the douche bags calling the game for Fox speculated that Hargrove would send Willie….but nothing. Willie should have scored from second on Morse’s single…..oh sorry….he was still on first at that time.
#107 — Absolutely. I think we have seen that all too much with Hargrove. I have been patient with him but he is getting on my nerves.
BTW, when is Morse’s “small sample size” up? The guy just keeps hitting, and is well over 100 AB’s for the year. Maybe he isn’t a real ML SS, but somebody somewhere should find a home for him. Perhaps he should be tradebait if the right deal and combination of players were to come along …
#108:
I think Willie had the green light to go if he had a good spot. He may not have been able to get a good jump. If that’s the case, then I’m not about to criticize him for it.
Giving a guy the green light doesn’t neccesarily mean he’s going to go.
Uncharacteristic line for Meche today. Huh.
I don’t know, he had 3 pitches to choose from before Morse’s base hit. With 1 out in the 9th and down by 1, I’d almost rather see him thrown out at 2nd trying to put us in position to tie than playing it safe.
108: With Bloomquist arb eligible, I think Morse will fill in his role very nicely.
111: So we can curse and yell at Bloomquist for being a crappy base stealer? I like it.
re: the Ponson deal, and “the approximately $15 million Ponson is owed through next year. [the] Orioles could re-start discussions with the San Diego Padres, who on Friday offered first baseman Phil Nevin, according to the source. Nevin will make $9 million this year and $10 million next season. That would be an even swap of high-salaried players. All scenarios directly affect any trade with the Marlins for Burnett and Mike Lowell. Trading Ponson to the Devil Rays would save Baltimore money on the pitcher’s contract and make them better able to afford more of Lowell’s salary. Baltimore owner Peter Angelos’s reluctance to pay Lowell’s entire contract — worth almost $21 million — has stymied the deal with the Marlins. If the Orioles trade Ponson for Nevin — who is hitting .265 with nine home runs — they no longer will be willing to take on Lowell.”– from the Post
Well, the likelihood of this not getting deleted is slim, but I figured that I’ll post it anyhow. Oh yeah, and by the way, so as not to make this a complete derailment from the topic — for this’ll give me personal justification in my hijacking of the thread — it is nice to see Mike Hargrove pinch-hit somebody other than Scott Spiezio in an important at-bat near the end of the game.
Anyways, as it concerns the M’s rotation come the trading deadline, they should trade Joel Pineiro (to anyone for a low-level prospect), Gil Meche (to FLA for Jason Stokes), Aaron Sele (to anyone for a low-level prospect), and Ryan Franklin (to anyone for a low-level prospect), with Felix Hernandez (contract purchased), Jorge Campillo, Bobby Livingston (contracted purchased), and Cha Seung Baek being recalled to replace them.
Regarding relief pitchers, Jeff Nelson (to anyone for a low-level prospect), Shigetoshi Hasegawa (to anyone for a low-level prospect), and Ron Villone along with Eddie Guardado (to BOS for Kelly Shoppach & Adam Stern) should all be traded; in addition, Matt Thornton should be DFA’d & subsequently released. To fill the empty bullpen spots, Clint Nageotte and George Sherrill should be recalled, while Rafael Soriano and Scott Atchison are activated from the 60-day disabled list; Justin Leone can replace Thornton on the roster, as the M’s do not need a seven pitchers in the bullpen.
Prior to the trading deadline, the M’s should ship out Randy Winn along with Scott Spiezio (to the NYY for Eric Duncan, who would be placed on the 40-man roster and recalled immediately thereafter), while also DFA’ing both Pat Borders and Dave Hansen. Also, Miguel Olivo should be demoted to Tacoma, while Wiki Gonzalez is recalled. Thus, come August 1st, the team should look like this:
ROTATION
SP Felix Hernandez
SP Jamie Moyer
SP Jorge Campillo
SP Bobby Livingston
SP Cha Seung Baek
BULLPEN
LS George Sherrill
LR Scott Atchison
MR Julio Mateo
MR J.J. Putz

CF Jeremy Reed
LF ***** Doyle ********
DH Raul Ibanez
BENCH
C Wiki Gonzaelz
1B/3B Eric Duncan
2B/SS Willie Bloomquist
RF/CF/LF Adam Stern
DH Justin Leone
In September, the following guys should get recalled for the final month of the season:
C Miguel Olivo
C Rene Rivera
1B Jason Stokes (If Healthy)
2B Calvin Reese (If Healthy)
SS Yuniesky Betancourt
3B Greg Dobbs
RF Wladimir Balentien
CF Jamal Strong
LF Shin-Soo Choo
DH Bucky Jacobsen (If Healthy)
At the end of the season, Scott Atchison, Greg Dobbs, Justin Leone, Jamal Strong and Bucky Jacobsen should be DFA’d — as they are all aging non-prospects — while Willie Bloomquist should NOT be offered arbitration; also, Wiki Gonzalez should not have his team option picked up ($250,000 buyout) and Calvin Reese should not have his team option picked up ($300,000 buyout).
In 2006, the M’s should look like this:
ROTATION
SP Felix Hernandez
SP Bobby Madritsch
SP Jorge Campillo
SP Bobby Livingston
SP Cha Seung Baek
BULLPEN
LS George Sherrill
LR Travis Blackley
MR Julio Mateo

Well, the likelihood of this not getting deleted is slim, but I figured that I’ll post it anyhow.
Unless you’re an author, you don’t know that.
Have you considered starting a blog of your own, rather than trying to, say, justify hijacking threads with lengthy roster and lineup speculation? You wouldn’t risk deletion or anything. Blogger’s free, effective, and if you’re M’s-centric, you’d get a free link here.
An interesting note on the possibility of trading Guardado — start rooting for the Phillies (7-3 in their last 10 games). As long as they stay within a few games of a playoff spot (they’re currently four games out in the NL East and the wild card), there’s no way they trade Billy Wagner before the 31st. If Wagner’s not available, the M’s will be able to get more for Guardado. Obviously teams would choose Wagner over Guardado but Guardado’s a much better option than Jose Mesa or the other available second rate closers…
Re. #115:
Ah, but that’s why I said the “likelihood” . . . but yeah, regarding starting my own blog, maybe I ought to; however, I’m neither knowledgeable enough about baseball — as that above post should undoubtedly prove — nor do I have the time or diligence necessary to maintain my own blog.
OT here but I think we can start forgetting about Jeremy Reed being AL Rookie of the Year. Nick Swisher got off to a slow start for the A’s but now has his average up to .250 with 14 home runs, 49 RBI (in just 278 AB’s cause he spent 3 weeks on the DL in May).
Yes, Reed plays a more important position defensively and makes some highlight reel plays but I think ROY voters value HR’s and RBI more than they do defense. Swisher is slugging .474 to Reed’s .353. At their current paces, Reed would hit 4 HR’s and drive in 55 runs. Swisher’s on pace for approximately 26 HR’s and 85 RBI.
The only shot Reed has it would seem is if he starts hitting like he did last September and manages to get his season average above .300.
Even if he did that he’d probably lose out to Swisher if Swisher keep his pace up…
Robinson Cano would be my AL ROY vote.
/boggle…
Goddamn you got some funny ideas about what’s a prospect and what isn’t. Just because Jamal Strong isn’t going to fit anywhere here in Seattle doesn’t make him a non prospect. Leone has the same problem. And Dobbs, well…
But Atchison and Bucky as non prospects? Sheesh. What’s Bucky gotta do? If it weren’t for his knees, he’d be playing now. Atchison was about the best pitcher we called up last year. That includes outperforming Sherril and Madritsch.
I don’t get your logic.
Sherrill update:
Threw an inning today for Tacoma; gave up two hits, struck out the side.
Scott Atchison is nothing more than a replacement-level long relief guy — besides, he over-performed last year, http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/scott_atchison.shtml — while Bucky Jacobsen is a poor-fielding (.984), power-hitting guy who has a got a bad BB:SO ration (14:47), and isn’t that good against righties (.245/.306/.436).
Ultimately, Jacobsen’s only use is that of a platoon player with Raul Ibanez at the designated hitter spot
However, there are numerous prospects out there that are way younger than him (e.g., oft-injured 23-year-old prospect for the Marlins @ AAA, Jason Stokes, who could be had, most likely, for Gil Meche), and have more upside. For what it’s worth, in 106 games last year at AA, Stokes had a line of .272/.345/.512 and hit 23 home runs; he currently out with a hand injury, but he’s still a talented guy with a bright future.
Anyhow, Jamal Strong, if I’m correct, will be under the same guidelines that Matt Thornton is this year, meaning that the M’s will have to put him on the major league roster or else waive him — he is not, presently, worth a spot on the team’s roster, which thereby makes him expendable. Lastly, neither Justin Leone nor Greg Dobbs have a real future with the M’s, and they are both getting up in their late-20s, so the most productive move would be to either trade them for a low-level prosepect or to DFA them.
Not even my X-box would let me trade Meche for Stokes.
123, my x-box must be faulty…it lets me trade boonie for miguel cabrera straight up
