Game 121, Mariners at Twins

RHP Meche v RHP Silva, 5:05.

This is going to be an ugly game. Remember when Melvin was perhaps a bit fixated on running out only five starters out all year? Meche wore down badly as the season went on, he got shuffled a little but never got the rest even a casual observer knew he needed… that’s a lot like things right now. Meche’s arm isn’t right, he’s fighting soreness and inflammation, and they’re running him out there over and over to get rocked.

I don’t think Jeff Harris is any great shakes, but if after tonight’s game you don’t agree that he should have stuck around while Meche got some time off until he could pitch effectively (and I know, maybe that’s never), well, I don’t know what happened but hopefully it’s a pleasant surprise.

Bloomquist remains in the 2-hole:

Ichiro RF-L
Bloomquist 2B-R
Ibanez LF-L
Sexson 1B-R
Beltre 3B-R
Reed CF-L
Morse DH-R
Betancourt SS-R
Torrealba C-R

Bloomquist isn’t hot anymore, skip. It was fun while it lasted, but it’s time to move on. He’s 19-68 in August so far (.279/.286/.353) and .269/.303/.341 on the year. It’a a modest average without enough walks or punch to make him an effective hitter. An AL #2 hitter averages .271/.326/.396.

    Flip a coin –

    HEADS = DFA Nelson
    TAILS = DFA Shiggy

  2. Jim Osmer on August 19th, 2005 7:21 pm

Methinks Lew Ford will be Batgirl’s BOD

  3. DC Mariner on August 19th, 2005 7:22 pm

I think Nelson will get Beltre’s Bitchslap of the Day

  4. pensive on August 19th, 2005 7:23 pm

Anyone want to bet Nelson did that intentionaly to drive Sherril’s numbers up?

  5. Matt on August 19th, 2005 7:24 pm

A kid in that LLWS game on ESPN2 had thrown 109 pitches before they yanked him. And I thought Dusty Baker was bad…

  6. Otter on August 19th, 2005 7:24 pm

With Morse out, Will Speizio with the hot bat be the DH? I think it’s safe to say that speez extending his hitting streak to 2 games is the only drama left in this game.

  7. Goose on August 19th, 2005 7:26 pm

Holy crap how did Willie beat that?

  8. djw on August 19th, 2005 7:28 pm

That’ll make everyone forget the crappy defense and baserunning gaffe earlier.

  9. DC Mariner on August 19th, 2005 7:30 pm

What is good times for a Beltre bomb, Alex?

  10. Goose on August 19th, 2005 7:31 pm

Phew, if Beltre hit that it would be 7-7

    Son of a…

    I thought that was gone.

  13. Goose on August 19th, 2005 7:36 pm

Well whatever chance we had of coming back just evaporated.

    Those commercials are pathetic.

  15. Goose on August 19th, 2005 7:38 pm

Jay Payton just hit homer #15

    Royals losing already 2-0

  16. dw on August 19th, 2005 7:39 pm

    Let me get this straight:
    I leave town
Beltre and Franklin have a bitter breakup live on TV
    Morse goes down
    M’s can’t pitch

Hum. Well, at least my father-in-law can pass away only once.

Funerals at midday in August in Alabama? SUCK. There’s no point in crying because you’re already covered in sweat.

Maybe we could have a funeral for ANY possible momentum or good feelings that may still have lingered from 1995. 🙁

  18. Goose on August 19th, 2005 7:46 pm

    A’s score another.

    3-0

No matter how many runs the M’s had early, it felt like they were losing the whole game, did it not?

  21. Long Suffering on August 19th, 2005 7:58 pm

I wasn’t paying attention, what happened regarding Morse?

  22. Long Suffering on August 19th, 2005 7:59 pm

170: It felt like they were losing that game the second they penciled Meche in.

  23. wabbles on August 19th, 2005 8:01 pm

    It did.

  24. wabbles on August 19th, 2005 8:03 pm

But we’re gonna get something for Eddie from the White Sox, right?

  25. Bretticus on August 19th, 2005 8:11 pm

Did I just hear “Scott Speizio released by the Mariners”?

  26. hedgie on August 19th, 2005 8:13 pm

    #175.. i heard it too ! YAY !

  27. msb on August 19th, 2005 8:16 pm

just confirmed by KOMO, Spiezio is out

Matt said: “A kid in that LLWS game on ESPN2 had thrown 109 pitches before they yanked him.”

and it took a three run HR by MiniDante for his coach to take him out. That followed a long discussion by Thorne & Reynolds about what LL is doing to regulate pitch counts in the future

  28. Tikistone on August 19th, 2005 8:33 pm

Hope Spiezio gets it turned around and finds success, just glad that it’s going to be somewhere else.

  29. Long Suffering on August 19th, 2005 8:38 pm

    So, what happened to Morse?

  30. edgarfan on August 19th, 2005 8:40 pm

Looks like Dobbs is taking Spiezio’s spot, per KOMO.

  31. Dave in Palo Alto on August 19th, 2005 8:41 pm

Dobbs’ swing is much prettier than Spezio’s.

  32. Cool Papa Bell on August 19th, 2005 8:53 pm

What’s scary is the fact that Dobbs’ line of .176/.200/.265 represents an improvement of 178 points of OPS over Spiezio.

  33. Long Suffering on August 19th, 2005 8:57 pm

yeah, that makes sense instead of calling Lopez up

  34. Gunga on August 19th, 2005 9:04 pm

    SO WHAT HAPPENED TO MORSE?

Sorry to yell, but Mr. Suffering asked a question to which I too would appreciate an answer.

    Thanks

Re: DOBBS’ TACOMA RAINIERS SCRATCH; CALL-UP (# 137); SPIEZIO’s DEPARTURE (# 177) – How come the broadcasters can’t tell us these things; that we have to get them from other sources?

(Same with why a player was inexplicably replaced.)
[Almost no contact between the broadcast booth and the outsude world–especially with the dugout.]

When one says that the broadcasters live in a world of their own, he/she is being literal.

  36. Jim Osmer on August 19th, 2005 9:08 pm

Morse took a pitch off the hand but I thought no big deal. They pinch ran with Strong because it was the tying run. I don’t think it’s a real injury from what I saw in the game.

  37. Gunga on August 19th, 2005 9:12 pm

    Thanks Jim!

  38. Jim Osmer on August 19th, 2005 9:12 pm

So Bavasi has DFAed his starting infield from last year (Olerud/Boone/Aurillia/Spiezio). That has probably not happened before.

  39. pensive on August 19th, 2005 9:27 pm

At least there is tommarrow Plus there is an amazing moon in the sky tonite.

Big game Saturday at Edmonds CC. Senior baseball league. Braves (18-0 vs Mariners 15-5) wonder if Mr Moyer is penciled in to pitch? 9 AM start.

because in the case of Spiezio, it happened just as the game ended, if not just after. Tim Hevly of the M’s passed the word to Kevin Kremin who told Huytler at the start of the postgame, simultaneous to it being posted here as someone heard it on FSN.

    Very bottom of the article.

Why do so many teams put one of their worst hitters in the two-hole?

Time has to be up on Willie. He does enough to keep his spot on the roster, certainly at least until the rest of the flotsam is cleaned out of there, but not enough to keep Jose Lopez out of the lineup.

  43. Gomez on August 20th, 2005 11:14 am

    189. It’s nearly certain Borders will be catching. He certainly doesn’t have anything to do here. However, if the Senior M’s are facing Phil Niekro, we are dead meat.

My only consolation from tonight’s loss is that Meche didn’t get credit for the win, because he sure as hell didn’t deserve it. Rest him and his sore arm already, and give Jeff Harris or somebody similar a shot in the rotation.

  44. Mr. Egaas on August 20th, 2005 12:19 pm

I’d have to imagine we’d be better off with Reed, Morse, or Betancourt hitting second. Reed probably won’t get the nod based on starting the lineup with 3 consecutive lefties, so Morse or Betancourt should be in that hole, IMO.
