Soriano up; rookies hazed

JMB · September 5, 2005 at 7:10 am · Filed Under Mariners

Chris Snelling has been moved to the 60-day DL; Soriano has been activated and is with the team today in Oakland. Hargrove says there won’t be any other callups until Tacoma’s season and playoffs are over.

In other news, it was rookie hazing day over the weekend. Here are accounts from both the Times and PI. If you feel bad for anyone, it should be JJ Putz — despite the fact that he went through this last year, Eddie Guardado made him to it again.

J.J. Putz, who had a black tank and sparkly hot pants, had been double-crossed — he went through the ritual nonsense last year.

“He helped pick out the stuff,” explained Eddie Guardado. “He’s been here less than a year, and that’s not enough time. So he has to go through it again.”

Note on Soriano….he had 11 Ks in 5.1 IP in Tacoma. Gulp.

Felix’s costume was a superb bit of humor. Guardado put him in an over-size diaper to symbolize what Felix makes a lot of opposing hitters wish they were wearing when they face him.

It’s strangely comforting to find the words “threads” and “snazzy” in the same paragraph.

And, I’ve never seen the phrase “effete cop rig” anywhere before, let alone the sports page.

Amen. I know fans are excited to see some of the kids and some deserve a call up, but whether you bring them up on Sept 1 or Sept 12 doesn’t help the major league team any. They’re going to sit on the bench anyway. I already feel bad for the remaining players at Tacoma that they’ve had a great season but have to go into the playoffs short-handed (no Felix, Lopez, Strong, Snelling, Sherrill).

Remember kids, those costumes may feel foolish but
they just might save your life.

Clearly you’ve never wandered the Pike/Pine corridor on a Saturday night (forget the phrase: go to The Cuff and see the rig). You’re right that that may be a first for a sports page, however.

Does anyone have a sense of how much work Soriano is going to get? I’d love to see him completely replace Thornton; on the other hand, I don’t want to see him overworked.

Does anyone else find it odd that veterans on a team that sucks will haze rookies….and many of these veterans will be or should be out of baseball after the next thirty days. Hazing is a frat boy mentality, and losers should be the last ones to embrace it.

What hazing did they do to Ichiro in 2001?

There’s no need for further callups at this time. They got some bullpen help, and that’s what matters most right now. They’ll never run out of fresh arms (as opposed to good arms).

Ichiro definitely got it in 2001. I think he had the Hooters uniform.

    Edit: Yup. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=ichiro&num=5 first paragraph.

Thanks, JMB. I wonder if Dobbs and Reed had to repeat their hazings as well, since they were with the team at this time last year.

#1– interestingly, through the years very few teams have had photos of their guys in rookie wear go out on the wire… dunno if it is a ‘gentlemans agreement’ or what….
