Happy New Year, everyone

DMZ · December 31, 2005 at 3:40 pm · Filed Under Off-topic ranting, Site information

It was a fun year for the site, even as the M’s didn’t do so well. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, learned something, or at least felt like part of a larger group, and I hope you hang around for the next year, too. Official USSM Endorsements will be coming over the next week or so, but feel free to send nominations. Or comments, complaints, thoughts for the new year… whatever.

    YAY!! I’m not #1!

I guess the better question is who has the most on-topic comments? Or Off-Topic Comments?

  2. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 4:35 pm

And last year you were only 1 post ahead of me…you’ve been commenting more.

  3. DMZ on December 31st, 2005 4:46 pm

There’s no way you’re catching me today, you know.

As to off-topic, I have to say MSB is the ninja hijacker: prolific, adept with providing cites that provoke discussion, and often ready with a quality segway that ties it into the topic currently at hand.

  4. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 4:47 pm

I’m going to catch you today!!!

  5. eponymous coward on December 31st, 2005 4:52 pm

I wouldn’t argue with someone who can put you into the moderation queue at any moment.

  6. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 4:52 pm

This is what I get for drinking a triple shot mocha at 5:30 PM.

    Wait till I start drinking…

  7. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 4:53 pm

eponymous, I have multiple internet connections I can connect to.

  8. DMZ on December 31st, 2005 5:02 pm

(deleted many Corcomments related to his quest to catch up to me today)

Man, I like Corco, I really do, but when he gets all hyperactive like this, it’s really a pain.

  9. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 5:07 pm

    OK!!! HA!!! Back!

    I promise I’ll stop now.

  10. DMZ on December 31st, 2005 5:10 pm

I have to admit, I totally cracked up laughing just now.

  11. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:17 pm

My New year’s resolution for 2006: To get a freakin’ life.

  12. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:30 pm

I’ll get my ya-yas out today since I have no intention of making the Top 10 in 2006 … who are all these people getting worked up over Lastings Milledge?

  13. Mat on December 31st, 2005 5:32 pm

These stats are all well and good, but they seem a bit basic. What I really want to know is who had the highest value over replacement poster? And who had the highest value per post? So many questions, so little time…

  14. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:32 pm

Also, it would be entertaining to see a Top Ten Commenters by Deletions list.

  15. Mr. Egaas on December 31st, 2005 5:33 pm

You’ve gotta love a prospect coming up with a cool name. That’s the only explanation I can think of.

  16. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:39 pm

Cool name … and a hot rap sheet. He, Elijah Dukes and Matt Bush would top a list of Criminally Good Prospects.

  17. marbledog on December 31st, 2005 5:45 pm

My New year’s resolution for 2006: To get a freakin’ life.

HaHaHa!!! That one cracked me up. Good luck on that one. :)

  18. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:46 pm

    Drinking more would help.

  19. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:49 pm

DMZ, how have posting totals grown year to year? That would be an interesting stat.

  20. marbledog on December 31st, 2005 5:53 pm

If you drink enough, then you won’t notice your lack of a freakinn’ life.

But seriously, people who have “lives” are usually really neurotic and boring.

  21. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 5:59 pm

Yeah, well … that, and I work Tuesday throuugh Saturday, 3 p.m. to midnight … that might have something to do with it.

  22. zzyzx on December 31st, 2005 6:07 pm

Wow, I need to post more next year. If only the M’s would find a way of reenergizing me…

  23. zzyzx on December 31st, 2005 6:08 pm

Still have 6 more hours in 2005 ;)

  24. Matthew Carruth on December 31st, 2005 6:12 pm

I don’t know why it took me so long, but I just made the mental connection on the word. E.C. what was the inspiration on the use of eponymous?

  25. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 6:55 pm

One question though. Do deleted posts count towards totals?

  26. Mat on December 31st, 2005 6:57 pm

“Wow, I need to post more next year. If only the M’s would find a way of reenergizing me…”

I think their plan is to bring in some new commenters who have experience commenting on a playoff-contending blog to create a healthy competition amongst the posters. Between that and the added grit and intensity, things should be even better next year.

  27. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 7:01 pm

Shot. I’m a proven veteran, and I have some intangibles (not necessarily godo intangibles), but no leadership and a lack of committment. And I have no playoff experience. Should I expect to be DFA’d, or traded to a Royals blog for a commenter to be named later?

  28. Mat on December 31st, 2005 7:14 pm

You’re in luck, Corco, M’s management considers Idaho as part of the M’s territory, so you’re a hometown boy. You might lose your starting role to a hot-shot prospect, but you’ll be sure to stick around in a utility role.

  29. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 7:17 pm

I better not lose my starting job. I’ve proven I can hit for average, although I do strike out a lot, but I can hit for average! I’m not good at pitch selection, but I have driven a few out of the park. My defense is weak, but that’s why I ain’t a shortstop.

  30. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 7:49 pm

#29: I want videotape on those alleged home runs, Corc-bat.

  31. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 7:52 pm

due to this damn new “helpful” search box which I can’t stand,I am having trouble locating the evidence of these “home runs”

  32. 2BOGUS2 on December 31st, 2005 7:58 pm

DJC–As soon as your Pap learns the truth about car and cookies I would guess we will not hear from you for quite awhile. Probably oatmeal privledges will be revoked as well.

  33. eponymous coward on December 31st, 2005 8:01 pm

Posters on Slashdot who don’t take a name show up as Anonymous Coward.

I decided to do a slight variation.

And no, my first name isn’t Noel. My last name’s not Coward, either.

  34. Deanna on December 31st, 2005 8:02 pm

Corco, dear, your problem is that sure, you have a high average — but you’re really, really streaky. Sometimes there’s no production from you at all, sometimes your RBI (Reloading Blogs Incessantly) numbers are through the roof. Unless we can count on you for consistent production in your template appearances, I’m not sure you belong as a starter on this roster.

(I am kidding. Mostly. Happy New Year, y’all!)

  35. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 8:18 pm

    Corco = Mike Morse?

  36. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 8:25 pm

32: I told him, sir. I’m paying the bill so it don’t really matter.

  37. bogus on December 31st, 2005 9:00 pm

Ah Mr Corcoran what an honest lad you are. May you be blessed with a great meal of Haggis for your confession.

  38. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 9:24 pm

not much of a fan of illegal Scottish cuisine, if I may say so.

  39. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 9:27 pm

Deanna, I promise I will become a more frequent page reloader in exchange for a guarantee as a starter.

Thomsen…Mike Morse=Corco in a strange strange land. Mike Morse wasn’t streaky, he was flukeily good in the beginning. And then got worse. And never ever got better.

  40. tyler on December 31st, 2005 9:31 pm

Thank you from myself and (i’m sure) the many anonymous readers who enjoy your analysis over the year but don’t comment. Shout out to everyone in Seattle who plays in a sub-pro local Seattle area baseball league! Happy new year!!

  41. wabbles on December 31st, 2005 10:02 pm

Yeah, but where as most of DMZ’s comments are about baseball, many of Corco’s comments are about the far more important topic of traffic in Boise. I think, taking that into account, Corco actually is the leading poster.

  42. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 10:09 pm

And not even Boise … but we all know how jammed the major arterials in McCall can get.

  43. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 10:12 pm

They do get jammed. We’ve got a huge traffic problem on tourist weekends in McCall. I was sitting at the intersection of Railroad and 55 for 10 minutes today waiting to make a left turn, because the road is two lanes, the drivers are jackasses, and everybody and their dog and cousin has their own car and is out driving it. We have the traffic infrastrutcture for 5,000 people but our population swells to 20,000 on weekends and they won’t put in traffic control devices because it screws up the scenery. And no four lane roads either. Even out in the country. A Donnelly-McCall four lane road (it could even end through the respective towns!) would be awesome because it is usually bumper to bumper all the way down there but the damn county won’t do it.

Boise traffic is nice. I try to get down there as much as possible just to enjoy driving!

  44. Jim Thomsen on December 31st, 2005 10:13 pm

Thanks for the reminder on why I need to post a lot less, Corc.

  45. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 10:14 pm

Traffic in McCall is something I get very worked up over.

  46. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 10:16 pm

I tell you, it’s the only place I’ve ever seen where people use the suicide lane as a driving lane. The morning commute into town is very dangerous as a result.

  47. DMZ on December 31st, 2005 10:26 pm

Remember the old days, like a couple hours ago, when Corco promised he’d stop? Good times, good times.

  48. Roger on December 31st, 2005 10:48 pm

It’s fascinating, in its own way. My favorite had to be when people started commenting on Corco’s blog and he wanted them to stop.

  49. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 10:53 pm

    When did I do that?

  50. David J. Corcoran on December 31st, 2005 10:58 pm

And I was provoked. Promises can be broken upon provocation. Everyone knows that.

Have we made it to Corco’s dating life yet?

  54. Matthew Carruth on December 31st, 2005 11:37 pm

Oh, I thought it was a play on the ancient greek term. Kind of ironic if it’s not due to the translation.

    Almost 2006 here. ummm. yay.

  55. bogus on December 31st, 2005 11:39 pm

EC- We are now blessed with Mr Corcoran’s own blog to be inform one of his dating life. It is indeed informative.

  56. eponymous coward on December 31st, 2005 11:53 pm

You have an interesting definition of “blessed”.

  57. bogus on January 1st, 2006 12:25 am

It is the sparkling wine followed by the the shots of Absente. Or maybe the Port.

  58. DoesntCompute on January 1st, 2006 1:05 am

    Happy New Year everyone.

Thanks to Derek, Dave, Jeff, et. al. who run this site. This is the most informed blog regarding baseball I have found to date. The fact that it is about my favorite team is simply a bonus.

There is only one hole I think needs filling. What is the probability of trading for (or signing as a free agent) the Batgirl? This site could really use some LegoVision analysis of Mariners games.

  59. msb on January 1st, 2006 1:21 am

    #58–not to mention mini-operas.

a happy new year to all! I wish I could send you a shot of the Space Needle exploding with fireworks; I actually got a picture of it going off tonight

an example for us all in the new year of something good coming from bad — in this case, finding an place with a view after being forced to move on short notice last summer due to The March of Fremont Condo-ization…

Happy new year, everyone, and thanks to all who make this site a fun place to check out.

Rumor has it that with her attendance-swelling capabilities, the Twins are clearing payroll to sign Batgirl to an extension. She’s a franchise blogger, and you’ve gotta find money when you get special talents like this.

And Happy New Year, etc., etc. I look forward to my first full year of USSM.

  74. DMZ on January 1st, 2006 5:52 pm

As we discovered in trying to set something up last year, that’s not true.

  75. David J. Corcoran on January 1st, 2006 5:54 pm

    Good point.

OK, I USUALLY have no life.

But, hey! I’m moving to Tacoma in August, so I’ll be there next year.

After all the negative feelings swirling around Marinersblogdom the last month or so, the last five minutes spent reading through the Corcopalooza was actually really nice…
Not that I am encouraging this sort of thing on a regular basis…
Even if I do have one brother in Meridian and another in Eagle…
Hey, Corc, they’re both Mariners fans. But they don’t know any single women who drink coffee in bars…
But you could get together and talk Bruce Bochte, or Jack Perconte, or Julio Cruz.
    Or Spike Owen.

  86. David J. Corcoran on January 2nd, 2006 8:21 am

heh. I’ll be in Meridian/Eagle today.

  87. mandy bot on January 2nd, 2006 4:27 pm

I am already posting for the first time this year and it’s only January 2nd. I would be worried about ending up on next year’s major posting list if Corco wasn’t already up to something like 20 already. Just kidding lol.

Happy New Year to everyone and thanks for all the great posts. I love reading them and usually stay in the background but this thread looked about right for my limited knowledge level. Thanks for the good information in 2005.

Glad you guys got some ads on the site. Well, glad about the potential cash you can make. I just clicked a few times on the Felix Hernandez ad, and picked up an autographed ball – cheap. (I hope it’s real.)

  94. vj on January 3rd, 2006 10:44 am

Re the google ads, I just saw one from Military.com (linking to USS Engage) and from ebay (re submarine base new London). This site’s name is somewhat misleading, I guess.
