Red hot Mariner news for Thursday
The Raul Ibanez signing is official. (Brock, TNT, Hickey , PI)
“There is really a very limited supply of left-handed hitters of Raul’s caliber,” Seattle general manager Bill Bavasi said. “He hits with men on base, hits both left-handers and right-handers and has a stroke that is a great fit for our ballpark. That’s before you even consider his leadership and character.”
(TNT)
The PI quotes the price at $5.5m each year for those two years, which is what was originally reported when Finnigan broke the story in the Times.
Meche is happy with his location. (Brock, TNT)
Jeff Harris wants to pitch. (also Brock, TNT)

Boooooooooo.
Yeah, the limited supply of left handed hitters corner OFers/DHs who can get .350 OBP/.450 SLG was something I noticed, too.
Granted, other teams can find them, but they didn’t spend years drafting incompetently.
I would like to echo JMB’s thoughts while also adding a subtle hissing noise!
Least it’s not a Randy Winn deal.
Well if Raul breaks down, they’ve DFA’d players who had a lot more money coming to them. And plus, HE’S A GREAT GUY.
The killer for me isn’t so much that overpayment, it’s that we’re blocking Floyd and Jones and maybe Tui as well as the opportunity to sign/trade for that left-handed sock we could plug in at DH/LF.
Floyd? Do you mean Doyle?
Slightly off topic, but there’s an article at Baseball Prospectus today on the M’s health outlook for the upcoming year. While it’s pretty positive regarding the position players (Sexson looks good!), the prognosis for the rotation is godawful. Jamie’s the only starter to whom they give a better than 50/50 chance of avoiding the DL, and they’re not impressed with anybody waiting in the wings, either.
There’s not a lot that’s off-topic for a news-of-the-day thread.
#8– ok, so where is the line drawn? When does an organization’s work with a pitcher cross from overuse or PAP to the comment from Thomas Gorman and Will Carroll about Felix, that “It doesn’t help that he’s been babied” by Seattle?
The Team Health Report on the M’s was a landmine of inaccurate information, a lack of knowledge about the team, and a mix of author bias tossed in just for kicks.
As an article, it would be do a real nice job of keeping your house warm if you lit it on fire.
Corey Brock blogs about Felix in today’s charity game
Kirby Arnold does a play-by-play of the first 27-out drill of spring
Jim Lefebvre is coaching the Chinese WBC team
and finally, stealing from Batgirl (again), captions anyone on this shot of Ichiro! in Japan?
#11– and re: the article, it isn’t “playing the innuendo game” if you flat out say someone tested positive for and admitted steroid use 🙂
Can we hope that a number of moves by other teams will make this a good deal in retrospect?
Then again, if everyone signs aging, powerless outfielders for too much money it doesn’t mean we did good by signing one for less first.
10 – Can you explain Carroll’s comment? What is the problem with babying somebody Felix’ caliber – or anyone’s caliber for that matter? It’s not like the M’s are going to contend this year, no many how many innings they wring out of Felix. What pitcher(s) of note were wrecked by babying – Rick Ankiel?
The babying thing was a typo.
