Game 4, Athletics at Mariners

DMZ · April 6, 2006 at 2:18 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

RHP Loaiza v RHP Meche. 2006 salary battle: $5m vs $3.7m. 7:05p, FSN for TV.

Also, it’s the season opener for the Tacoma Rainiers at 6:05. Fireworks and everything. They’re taking on the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

As noted in another thread, the M’s traded Carvajal for another righty who doesn’t require a roster spot.

So, thoughts going into the first series with the evil, evil A’s.

Is the new Meche for real? And will he stick with the plan, or fall back into old habits the first time he gets hit hard? He seems to panic and try to overthrow as soon as he thinks batters have figured him out. Can Jo keep him on track? Can anyone?

I predict we’ll hear no end to the chatter about the “two seam fastball” from the announcers. The last game they were talking about it like it was a newly-invented pitch, trying to guess which kind of fastball a given pitch was (often incorrectly), and generally being incredibly annoying. I realize it’s the Mariners’ Corporate Marketing Focus for this season (”Same old rotation but with New, New, Fastball! As taught by New, New Pitching Coach! Hey Now! Catch it! Mojo!”) and they do sometimes run out of things to talk about and fall back on their scripts, but sheesh….

Other thoughts: Johmamma is now on pace for 108 HRs. Hey now.

Are we currently at the high-point for winning percentage for the season?

How many games can we go before the masses demand an appearance by Mr. Gritty? I’m guessing the Bloomster gets at least a pinch running assignment tonight whether it makes sense or not.

  2. scotje on April 6th, 2006 4:52 pm

If we keep winning games, I doubt the masses will demand anything. :)

Heck, the masses probably wouldn’t care if we had Niehaus patrolling in left field as long as we were winning games.

On a related note, if we did put Niehaus in left field, would he have a better zone rating than Ibanez? :)

  3. AQ on April 6th, 2006 4:54 pm

#1 – I’m guessing Willie (aka McLemore-Lite)either starts at SS or 2B in one of the games over the weekend. Whether we like it or not.

Regarding Carvajal, I recall the USSM’ers being pretty high on this guy when we got him from Colorado (either that or my memory is poor, LOL). Did we get close to equal value in return for him in this trade? Just curious.

  4. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 4:57 pm

What should we look for from Nageotte, who’s starting tonight in Tacoma? What pitches do we want him to be throwing? What are the keys to his success?

  5. msb on April 6th, 2006 4:58 pm

a WFB sighting is particularly likely as Hargrove says he is planning to give everyone some time off the next little bit…

  6. msb on April 6th, 2006 5:07 pm

dang but it’s a shame that Piniero-for-Wilson rumor was nothing but a rumor… according to the Reds’ broadcast team, Craig Wilson is a bonafide, game-changing, bat off the bench…

  7. wabbles on April 6th, 2006 5:11 pm

    RE 4: 1. Two-seam fastball. 2. Two-seam fastball.

  8. Zero Gravitas on April 6th, 2006 5:13 pm

RE 4: First-pitch strikes. That is the key, I am Fairly certain.

  9. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 5:13 pm

A 1-2-3 first inning for Clint, with two Ks.

  10. Smegmalicious on April 6th, 2006 5:15 pm

I’ll believe that when I see Petagine starting at DH.

  11. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 5:43 pm

    I dream of Petagine.

  12. DC Mariner on April 6th, 2006 6:02 pm

Im loving Dave’s lounge singing act

  13. Kathleen on April 6th, 2006 6:05 pm

My first post since the registration system began-Meche hasn’t thrown a pitch yet and I’m tense already.

  14. Kathleen on April 6th, 2006 6:08 pm

    So much for the sinker?

  15. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 6:08 pm

Nice start by Mr. Meche, I see.

  16. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 6:09 pm

Who else is that in the booth?

  17. ChrisB on April 6th, 2006 6:09 pm

That was a nice dive by Reed though. He really looked like he might get it … so close to rivalling Beltre’s catch the other night for “fielding highlight of the season”

  18. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 6:09 pm

    Oh ok, Hendu

  19. dkulich44 on April 6th, 2006 6:10 pm

Meche is missing his spots by 2 or 3 feet almost every pitch, if this continues we’re in for a long night.

  20. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 6:13 pm

Does anyone believe the A’s will draw more fans if only they were located away from mass transit in one of the least populated regions of the Bay Area?

  21. Jar on April 6th, 2006 6:16 pm

    What the crap Gil!

  22. ChrisB on April 6th, 2006 6:16 pm

Belt high fastball! and Henderson says “staying away from the walk” – by giving a power hitter a pitch to tattoo? That is really digging in the dregs of the positivity barrel

  23. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 6:18 pm

Assuming we’re smart enough not to buy into jinxes, I’ll point out that Nageotte has given up no hits through five innings.

  24. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 6:19 pm

At least he only gave up one run….in the 1st inning.

  25. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 6:21 pm

Now that’s the Ichiro! we know and love. Swinging at an obvious ball and getting a hit out of it.

  26. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 6:21 pm

    DO NOT BUNT HERE! SHEESH!

  27. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:21 pm

    1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1 Groundball out, 1 Flyball out.

    Observations:

I think Reed was dreadfully out of position on that triple. That ball was up in the air a long time and he still almost got to it. I think he was probably playing more towards left center. Would make sense because of Meche’s current pitching selections.

As for Gil, I saw him throw more changeups then anything else. He threw mostly 2-seam fastballs, but threw one 4-seamer to Chavez (that was raked). Only 1 curve ball. So right now he’s primarily Change -> 2-seam fastball pitching. I’m wondering how much of this is Meche, how much is Chavez calling pitches from the dugout, and how much is Jojima.

  28. DC Mariner on April 6th, 2006 6:22 pm

Brantley on BBTN is giving Reed crap for not catching that Scutaro triple. “Come on. I thought he was faster than that!” Idiot

  29. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 6:23 pm

#26, was he really trying to bunt or were you just saying that preemptively?

  30. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 6:23 pm

    Shin-Soo Choo hits a two-run dinger.

  31. Kathleen on April 6th, 2006 6:23 pm

BBTN? I still have Mets/Nationals on the four letter network.

  32. harry on April 6th, 2006 6:24 pm

29, looked like was definitely choking up to bunt. It made my stomach lurch.

  33. DC Mariner on April 6th, 2006 6:25 pm

Yeah, Im on the eastcoast if that makes a difference (also in the Nats broadcast area so maybe they arent showing it??? who knows)

  34. ChrisB on April 6th, 2006 6:25 pm

I would say Gil’s best pitch that inning was his change, especially to the lefties. They were flailing at it.

I would have liked to have seen an overhead shot to see where Reed started from, what his jump was like etc.

  35. BelaXadux on April 6th, 2006 6:27 pm

Re: #4, Where away Big Clint?:

–Two-seamer in the zone with movement, to get ahead in the count and keep the pitch count low

–Also to set up the slurvy slider of his for an out pitch

–Occasional four-seamer out of the zone for another look

  36. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:28 pm

Ellis was horribly fooled on Meche’s change. So it’s working to the righties too.

  37. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 6:29 pm

Yes he was about to bunt.

  38. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 6:30 pm

Stop the presses: Greg Dobbs took a walk.

  39. wabbles on April 6th, 2006 6:31 pm

It’s not as simple as just stopping the presses. Now you have to replate the page. Geez!

  40. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:32 pm

Hey Bradley… that pitch before was strike 3 too. You got off once, not twice. This is not a spectator sport.

  41. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 6:33 pm

Meche is looking damn good tonight. That grooved 4 seamer for the double was bad but he is pitching for the corners and either hitting or missing off the plate.

  42. DC Mariner on April 6th, 2006 6:33 pm

Hah! Oakland broadcasts keys to the game include: “Mess with Meche” and “Dominate the Division”. Brilliant!

  43. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 6:33 pm

Nageotte leaves with his no-no intact … 4 Ks, eight groundball outs, one fly ball out.

  44. Jar on April 6th, 2006 6:33 pm

    nice.

  45. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:34 pm

    2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 SO, 1 Groundball out, 2 Flyball outs.

Threw more curves this inning, especially to Swisher, who couldn’t touch them. Bradley sruck out on a change, so did Swisher.

  46. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 6:35 pm

    2nd inning for Gil >> 1st inning

  47. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 6:35 pm

That 2nd inning from Meche was easier on the heart.

  48. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 6:37 pm

Yeah, the 2nd inning was great but if that fly to center is 1 foot more towards Reed then Meche has a shut out brewing. I don’t think that first inning was that bad.

  49. Joe C. in Buffalo on April 6th, 2006 6:37 pm

Is it me, or does Beltre always seem to hop around on breaking balls?

  50. harry on April 6th, 2006 6:38 pm

Beltre was finding it hard to hold back on that low and away dirtball….

  51. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:38 pm

Pow. That’s an Adrian Beltre stroke. Too bad he pulled it foul.

  52. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 6:38 pm

Great swing by Beltre on that foul ball. I want to see more of those.

  53. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:39 pm

Yeah, the 2nd inning was great but if that fly to center is 1 foot more towards Reed then Meche has a shut out brewing. I don’t think that first inning was that bad.

31 pitches. Yes it was. Second inning was only 14 pitches.

  54. David* on April 6th, 2006 6:40 pm

  57. harry on April 6th, 2006 6:40 pm

  58. Joe C. in Buffalo on April 6th, 2006 6:41 pm

Hey, lead-off guy on two innings in a row. Not sure what that means, but it seems good.

Now, if only Everett weren’t up…

  59. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 6:41 pm

Needs to lay off that crap over his eyeballs too.

  60. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 6:42 pm

That Beltre hit looked like a blooper on GameCase. I gotta learn how to tell what kinda hit it was from this thing.

  61. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 6:42 pm

TIF- The pitches were up, but that inning was 1 foot away from being harmless. He threw some great pitches and kept it from being a great inning. I am not sure why the 2nd inning has anything to do with the first being good or not.

  62. David* on April 6th, 2006 6:42 pm

  134. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 7:07 pm

The A’s clearly have a good gameplan of taking pitches. Not sure how many managers think about a 4 game series, but it seems that if you can blow off the first game starter quickly you will be up against a short bullpen the rest of the series.

  135. Rain Delay on April 6th, 2006 7:07 pm

    70+ pitches, isn’t that dandy.

He has another inning like that, and he’s done.

  147. Tae Bo Jackson on April 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

    We’ll take it…

  148. Rain Delay on April 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

    He was dead to rights…

  149. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

I imagine we’ll chill out eventually

  150. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

Hendu and Niehaus are argueing about the call – hilarious.

  151. davepaisley on April 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

    Ibanez = square wheels

  152. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 7:10 pm

I agree … Ibanez was out by a foot. Tag got him right on the butt.

  153. DC Mariner on April 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

Over agressive baserunnings not in the bible. Hmmm, on second thought, maybe the escape from pharoh through a temporarily parted sea counts

  154. Jar on April 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

I wonder if agressive baserunning leads to more calls in your favor overal? Seems to be the case for the M’s so far anyway.

  155. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

Lol, I love how Neihaus is yelling at hendo that he was obviously safe because it was a “pop up” slide.

  156. David* on April 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

Man, he was out. After the Seahawks screw-jobs though, we’ll take it!

  157. Rain Delay on April 6th, 2006 7:11 pm

Look at him, he’s totally gassed..

  158. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 7:12 pm

I wonder if the plan is to use that to get more fans in the seats. I could see it working.

Loaiza is likely to throw more pitches than Meche… Damn not after that.

  159. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 7:13 pm

If Grover is likely to get fired, as we heard at the feed on Sunday, maybe that is affecting his managing: “What the heck, I’ll go down running.”

  160. Smegmalicious on April 6th, 2006 7:13 pm

When even Hendu thinks you’re being stupid it’s time to re-think. Also it’s clear that the scouting report is to throw Beltre junk low and away. He did hit the ball hard though, just right at the 3B.

  161. Faceplant on April 6th, 2006 7:13 pm

Yeah, that wasn’t even close. This aggressive baserunning crap is starting to grate on me even more. Ibanez should have been out, just like Reed a couple of days ago. But now Hargrove is going to cite these as examples of what a great strategy it is.

  162. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 7:14 pm

    Will Carl Steal!??!

  163. Typical Idiot Fan on April 6th, 2006 7:14 pm

    Everett? Walking?

    OH SHI~!

  164. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 7:15 pm

That is the problem with Beltre isn’t it? The ball was low and away and he still pulled it?

  165. Smegmalicious on April 6th, 2006 7:15 pm

    Kenji Johjima is so dreamy.

  166. Jar on April 6th, 2006 7:16 pm

    man, we are rocking Loaiza

  167. The Unknown Comic on April 6th, 2006 7:16 pm

I hope this is not just karmic payback for the Superbowl. That would be Seattles luck to get karmic payback for the joke of the Superbowl in a regular season baseball game 1 of 162. God owes Seattle the Superbowl next year in my opinion.

  168. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 7:17 pm

Why do I feel like Hargrove thinks he is managing the Indians team from Major League???

  169. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 7:17 pm

Now who’s getting to the pen early? Huh? Huh? Pitch count this buddy!

  170. Kathleen on April 6th, 2006 7:17 pm

This game is going to be four hours.

  171. Rain Delay on April 6th, 2006 7:18 pm

“I thought you said we don’t have any high priced talent.”

“We don’t, that’s Dorn he’s just high priced.”

  172. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 7:20 pm

On the aggressive approach, there are choices that the player makes (going for extra base, some steals), and plays the manager calls (squeeze, other steals). It’s a little easier for Hargrove to vary the risk on the stuff he calls than to suddenly call a team huddle midgame and say “Forget all that aggressive stuff I preached in spring training – at least for the rest of this game”.

  173. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 7:40 pm

    RBI-SAN!

  174. Norm Charlton Fan Club on April 6th, 2006 7:40 pm

Can we stop with the K-Joh and such and just start calling him ROY?

  176. NBarnes on April 6th, 2006 7:42 pm

This Johjima guy can hit a little.

  177. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 7:42 pm

TJ – hey, the Indians won the division!

I watched that movie for the first time a few months ago. I can’t believe that the big plan was to move the team to Miami. That’s sure worked well in the real world.

I also don’t understand why the owner continues to root against her team at the end of the movie when the fan threshold has obviously been reached. Might as well hope for a profit at that point.

  178. Daniel Carroll on April 6th, 2006 7:42 pm

What’s Johjima trying to do, out-hit the ‘05 M’s catchers’ seasons in four games?

Looks like he’s doing a good job.

  179. Smegmalicious on April 6th, 2006 7:42 pm

Does anyone know what’s with Johjima’s necklase? He kissed it and touched it to his bat before the at bat, then kissed it again when he got to first.

  180. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 7:46 pm

Somebody tell Meche he has a 4 run lead and can throw a couple of strikes.

  181. Rain Delay on April 6th, 2006 7:48 pm

Anything that goes that far should have a stewardess.

  182. Kathleen on April 6th, 2006 7:48 pm

Chavez sure likes hitting against Meche.

  183. zzyzx on April 6th, 2006 7:48 pm

    Just not there again please.

  184. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 7:48 pm

UGHHHHH, That pitch didn’t work when he roped a double, why throw it again????????

  185. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 7:49 pm

I didn’t expect him to get yanked now, after the load the other three starters carried.

  186. Jar on April 6th, 2006 7:50 pm

    doh!

  187. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 7:51 pm

    Oh – 101 pitches – nevermind.

  188. Jar on April 6th, 2006 7:51 pm

hey, meche could have done a lot worse. I’ll take that from him every time.

  189. Replacement level Poster on April 6th, 2006 7:52 pm

So gamecast on ESPN.com is pretty cool, er umm well would be if they actually properly charted the pitches, its location was way off. Perhaps I have just got a bad sample of it though, as I’ve only used it this inning in the first two at bats.

  190. Mr. Egaas on April 6th, 2006 7:52 pm

    This could get interesting.

Least the pen gets to rest a bit tomorrow (hopefully) when the ball is in the court of King Felix.

  194. harry on April 6th, 2006 7:57 pm

Has he ever broken a bat before (on the M’s)? I can’t recall him ever breaking a bat.

  195. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 8:01 pm

I think that was going to be an easy double steal.

  196. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 8:04 pm

FERGET about throwing him out, pal!

  197. Replacement level Poster on April 6th, 2006 8:04 pm

  199. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 8:07 pm

  200. The Unknown Comic on April 6th, 2006 8:09 pm

#179 Maybe Johjima has a laughing Buddha necklace or soemthing. I know quite a few oriental Buddhists that engage in all sorts of ritualism to ward of evil spirits etc.

  201. harry on April 6th, 2006 8:09 pm

Last season, they got off to a slow start, and never recovered. Same in 2004. In 2001, they got off to a fast start, and just kept rolling.

The past couple of years, everyone kept saying, “It’s just the beginning, you can’t judge from the small number of games they’ve played.” But the way they lost those games, it didn’t feel like there was better play to follow: it really felt like April showed what the rest of the season would look like.

So these games are making me optimistic. It feels like they’re just going to play at a higher level this year than in the past two.

  202. Rockymariner on April 6th, 2006 8:10 pm

    Everett’s Homer = Jurassic park’d ?

  203. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 8:12 pm

I lost all hope. If Benta can’t get that ball up the middle we have no chance at doing anything this season.

  204. JMHawkins on April 6th, 2006 8:18 pm

If I were commissioner, I would suspend Nick Swisher three games for ugly facial hair. You gotta think of the future – the guy’s scaring small kids away from the park with that whisk broom sticking out of his chin.

  205. dnc on April 6th, 2006 8:18 pm

200 – did you really just use the word *oriental*?

DMZ is going to love this.

  206. KW on April 6th, 2006 8:19 pm

    Oriental = from the east.

  207. harry on April 6th, 2006 8:22 pm

The Orient is properly the area once known as Persia. Most asians do not appreciate being called “oriental”.

  208. harry on April 6th, 2006 8:24 pm

At least, most asians I know and talk to. And my wife being chinese, I know and talk to a lot of asians.

  209. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 8:25 pm

    Oriental = rug
    Asian = people

Johjima’s necklace is one of those ridiculous titanium jobbies, isn’t it?

Swisher’s beard is mandated (not man-dated) by the league to assist the umpire in cleaning off the plate. Maybe he should take a tip from Jason Kendall, who apparently shaved his moustache off during this game.

What, pray tell is a “Jake Woods”? I have been following the M’s fairly closely, but I totally missed this fellow. Any idea where he came from?

In case you can’t tell, I’ve been tasting the fruits of the grape a little this evening. Hi-ya.

  210. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 8:26 pm

Though I must say I have no problem at all being referred to as an “Occidental”.

  211. Harden Slade on April 6th, 2006 8:27 pm

    Steve T is a dis-oriental.

  212. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 8:30 pm

  213. KW on April 6th, 2006 8:31 pm

  216. kmsandrbs on April 6th, 2006 8:36 pm

You know, not that we couldn’t still find a way to lose this game, and King Felix is untried this season, but we have a great shot at getting 4 in a row and starting the season off 4 – 1 with all of those wins against the division.

    And Texas lost tonight.

Not a bad way to start the season.

  217. harry on April 6th, 2006 8:40 pm

  219. topher on April 6th, 2006 8:47 pm

#210 The thing about language is that it’s contextual and laden with history. A word that may appear innocent to you today and still have an ugly history – such as Oriental. There are still covenants on house deeds in the city of Seattle that forbid the house to be inhabited by “orientals except for chinese houseboys.” These covenenants are, of course, not enforceable today, but still rankle many/most Asians such as myself b/c of such history. Anecdotally, wealthy Asians were de facto often excluded from buying a house in Magnolia, for example, as late as the mid-1970’s. Not as long ago as you might think….

Occidental, on the other hand, has no such ugly history. Hence there is little reason for anyone to mind being called Occidental.

OTOH, it is clear to me that no harm was intended. I say, no harm no foul as long as the M’s go 4-1! :)

  220. G-Man on April 6th, 2006 8:50 pm

  222. Choska on April 6th, 2006 8:52 pm

Does Dave sound like he is in a much better mood. Maybe he is just relieved that he isn’t facing a year of calling losing baseball. We had the luxury of not watching last year. Dave did not.

Come to think of it, wouldn’t you love to take Dave out for dinner + 2 bottles of wine after he retires. I suspect he knows where all of the bodies are buried.

  223. harry on April 6th, 2006 8:54 pm

Go Putz! What a way to put them away.

  224. Jar on April 6th, 2006 8:55 pm

    YEAH!

  225. fanoliv on April 6th, 2006 8:55 pm

How long has it been since the M’s were 1st in the division? I really can’t remember.

  226. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 8:56 pm

Speaking of racists, does 3 Ks in an inning make J.J. Putz a member of the KKK?

  227. TJinAK on April 6th, 2006 8:56 pm

Choska- He may have heard where the bodies are burried, but it is painfully clear that he has gone nusto in the last couple of years. He can’t even remember who is in the lineup or even tell if a 200 ft flyball is a homer. I think it would be great to take him out to dinner just because he is so crazy.

  228. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 8:57 pm

Brad Adams says they were in first in early April last year, by a half game. They’re a full game up now. Gosh, maybe mid-2004?

Nice game. I retract every bad thing I’ve said. We’re Number One.

  229. Rain Delay on April 6th, 2006 9:00 pm

    Bravo. Very Nice.

  230. topher on April 6th, 2006 9:00 pm

#221 – Actually, Steve T, this one’s my gaffe. I was actually more responding to #200, of course, and just used your post to prove the point. Had I actually noticed your post before, I would have written it differently (he says, trying to remove foot from mouth).

By hey, I say all is right in the world. We’re 4-1 without even a Felix start!

Thanks again for your patience, Steve T. I’ll try to keep it straight in the future.

  231. Rockymariner on April 6th, 2006 9:02 pm

You know, I remember last year in the first few games of the season the M’s seemed like they were hoping to win, while other teams like the Angels were loose and joking around like they expected to win.

The lads seem a lot more confident this year.

  232. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 9:03 pm

It’s all because Joe Borchard is kicking ass in the clubhouse, of course.

  233. Prenderman on April 6th, 2006 9:07 pm

Mark Hendrickson from Mt Vernon and WSU threw a shutout for TB today against Batlimore.

  234. Choska on April 6th, 2006 9:09 pm

227 – You are right about Dave. The way he can’t tell the difference between even a 200 ft fly ball and a HR drives me crazy. I can usually tell by just the sound of the bat. His signature call is, “Swung on and BELTED . . . and the outfielder drifts over and it’s one down.”

But I do cut the guy some slack. If any of us had spent the past 28 years calling mostly losing baseball for the Mariners, we’d all be nuts. Or drunk. Preferably both.

Let’s all say it together, “The Seattle Mariners are in sole possession of first place, and Felix Hernandez takes the mound tomorrow.”

I’ll go to sleep tonight knowing all is right in the world. At least, all is right in Mariner-land. The world . . . not so much.

  235. Prenderman on April 6th, 2006 9:09 pm

How can we be 4-1 after four games?

  236. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 9:11 pm

From the Associated Press: Adam Dunn takes a backhanded slap at Ken Griffey Jr.:

“Dunn has hit the only homer that left Great American on the fly [--] a 535-foot shot in 2004 that cleared the batter’s eye and landed on the street, then came to rest on a piece of driftwood in the Ohio River.
“I don’t watch them too much,” Dunn said. “They all count the same, whether they go front row like (Ken Griffey) Junior’s or 500 feet.”

  237. Phoenician Todd on April 6th, 2006 9:12 pm

Its the new math, but I’ll take it. We are guaranteed to be in first place even after tomorrow. That’s a happy thought. Whats the magic #, 157?

  238. Jim Thomsen on April 6th, 2006 9:14 pm

#233: I predict Hendrickson’s five strikeouts will be his season-high.

  239. joser on April 6th, 2006 9:16 pm

The aftergame interview, question: “What’s the difference between last year and this year?”
    Hargrove: “We’re scoring more runs?”

Later in the same answer he said “There’s more energy…” then, obviously backtracking, “Well there was energy last year but it was more… internal.”

  240. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 9:18 pm

If you were deaf, looking at Hargrove you’d think we’d lost our twentieth straight. What a poker face.

  241. shortbus on April 6th, 2006 9:22 pm

219 — Like you I’m a Seattle Times reader. After reading the article today I told my half-Japanese, 1/4 Jewish wife she needed to move out since our home probably contains language in the deed prohibiting both the aforementioned groups from inhabiting a dwelling in our neighborhood. Some may be unaware that our marriage would have been illegal in some states as recently as 1967. There is a very interesting book out titled Sundown Towns about entire towns that do not permit minorities inside their boundaries past sundown. I say “do not” because this is likely still happening today.

Sorry for being pedantic, but I was frankly as surprised as anyone by that last bit.

    Go M’s.

  242. BelaXadux on April 6th, 2006 9:22 pm

Now that was the Good Putz I hope to see regularly. His splitter is outstanding; it gets the zone for the call, but still is practically in the dirt by the time the catcher gloves it. Difference of 6-8 mph between the split and the four-seamer, which is good enough though more would be better. Good mix of splits, and change of location on the four-seamer, with only a few of the later down the middle on a blow-it-by-’em basis. I didn’t see JJ shake off Joe-Jim once, so we know who was responsible for the pitch mix. Totally worked, had the Oaklanders playing defense at the plate, either guessing fastball and swinging to try and catch up to it, or protecting the plate. If Putz will just let Johjima take over the thinking, this battery will pound the other team into the ground. [Now if Chaves can just remind the big galoot not to overthrow All Will Be Well.]

  243. joser on April 6th, 2006 9:23 pm

OK, this is an absolute Carl Everett CLASSIC — in a clubhouse interview on the radio, he said “All home runs are accidents… according to physics, it’s supposed to be impossible.”

Apparently Carl doesn’t know the difference between home runs and bumblebees. I wouldn’t want to live in Carl’s world, but it sure would be an interesting visit — physically impossible acts occuring on a daily basis, skeletons of creatures that never existed getting dug up all the time…

  244. BelaXadux on April 6th, 2006 9:30 pm

Better dis-oriental than dys-oriental, though I heard no one being diss-oriental which is just as well. Call it a review exercise in social geography.

  245. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 9:33 pm

Did he really say that? Classic. Someone at the UW should invite him to speak at their physics class.

Those deeds still exist, but are unenforceable, because you can’t enforce an illegal provision, and any restriction on housing on the basis of race, creed, or national origin is illegal. But actually changing the language on a property deed is difficult if not impossible, so they just stay that way.
I still remember the lady who came to our door after we moved into our new house on Mercer Island in 1968 and asked my mom if she’d like to sign the “informal agreement” she was carrying to never sell our house to a Jew.

  246. Mr. Egaas on April 6th, 2006 10:00 pm

If Johjima keeps playing as well as he has been, he’s gotta take the Rookie of the year, hands down. He’s hitting, calling great games, and had to be at least partly responsible for the good pitching thus far.

Faced with a massive challenge and Joe has really ridden up. Bargain.

  247. Zero Gravitas on April 6th, 2006 10:04 pm

As long as C-Rex keeps hitting the ball out of the yard he can talk crazy after the game all he wants.

Actually I think there was an article somewhere a couple years ago where some physicists were trying to measure the force it took to hit balls out of PacBell Park into McCovey Cove, and they kept coming up with calculations that made it look physically impossible. Maybe Carl thinks he’s Barry Bonds or something.

  248. scraps on April 6th, 2006 10:43 pm

243: For what it’s worth, the idea that physicists say that bumblebees shouldn’t be able to fly is also a load of bushwah.

  249. JMHawkins on April 6th, 2006 10:52 pm

OK, this is an absolute Carl Everett CLASSIC — in a clubhouse interview on the radio, he said “All home runs are accidents… according to physics, it’s supposed to be impossible.”

Actually, I’m having trouble figure out that quote on a few different levels. If it was impossible to hit a home run, but you did anyway, wouldn’t that be a miracle, not an accident? Or was Everett saying he meant to bunt?

    To clarify:

Miracle: Doing the physically impossible – Example: Dan Wilson hitting an Inside-the-park Grand Slam. In the Kingdome.

Accident: Unintended action, usually with negative consequences – Example: putting yourself on the DL tripping on your luggage.

Mistake: Intentional but erroneous and possibly ill-considered action – Example: walking Ibanez to get to Sexson. Example #2: Spezio, Scott. Mariner’s contract with. (see also Disaster, Blunder, Faus Pas).

But yes, if you hit home runs, you can call them whatever you like.

    I like this offense!

  250. joser on April 6th, 2006 11:06 pm

I know it’s a load of bullwah (all those fluid dynamics courses at the UW were good for something) — but I was trying to give him the benefit of the doubt and guessed that’s what he was misremembering.

  251. Steve T on April 6th, 2006 11:14 pm

I will give you a hundred dollars cash if you go find Carl Everett in person, anywhere, anyplace, and ask him with a tape running what he thinks about fluid dynamics.

  252. Mat on April 6th, 2006 11:25 pm

“Did he really say that? Classic. Someone at the UW should invite him to speak at their physics class.”

Speaking as a teaching assistant in physics at the UW, I’m going to have to say that if Carl was in any of my classes, I’d have to fail him. It would be difficult for me to do, since he would probably protest loudly, and is a much larger man than I am, but the lucrative settlement from the assault charges would make it all worthwhile.

As long as you film it, it would be worth it. But I don’t want him to take your class, I just want him to stand up in front of your students and rap on physics for a minute or two. That’s all I ask.

Unfortunately, the damage Carl could do in a minute or two would take me weeks to fix. It’s too bad, because an extra hundred dollars here or there certainly wouldn’t hurt.

I apologize for using the word oriental. I didn’t realize it is considered an offensive term to asians. I have been out of touch with academia for so long that I have a tough time staying politically correct and sometimes I unkowingly slip up. I will now refer to all people from the East as Asians. Just to get back at me you can call me a honky whenever you want.
