This announcer’s name is Jim Byers, and it’s worth knowing that he has been an official. He used to work minor league hockey games. That’s why he’s so critical of these “fat clowns.”

The announcer finally gets it right at the end….when he says, “next time they should just throw the ball to first base.”

These ARE professional players, after all. If you leave the decision to humans, there will be errors. Make the right play, and you don;t have to worry about it. The blame goes squarely on the catcher 1st. Then you can talk about the umpires making the wrong call. If the catcher does his job, though, the play is over.

I nominate this announcer as the IMMEDIATE replacement for Rizzie. Tells is like it is, doesn’t beat around the bush, and not one “-ie” name in the whole time.

What struck me was the almost resigned tone of the announcer when the umpires huddled. This is a man who has seen FAR too many bad calls by replacement umps.

As the man said “this is just minor league baseball…” – great stuff. I wish we could get more of this kind of commentary at the major league level – it would make Ms games easier to listen too…
