A day late, thank you for the birthday present, DMZ. Unfortunatley I was in the hospital with a mangled thumb so I couldn't even appreciate it (or the 12 inning game) and now only have 7 fingers that can type and my brain is clouded with vicodin so I'll be making enough typos you'll have to delete me. But I promise I won't misspell Pineiro.

#391-- I think if you asked Fontaine, he would tell you ""We had a number of pitchers we thought were worthy of the fifth pick in the draft," said Bob Fontaine, the Mariners' vice president of scouting. "We think he is a good fit for us."

If you asked about any of the other pitchers, you'd get the same answer he gave McGrath :

"Bob Fontaine surely understands why Mariners fans would've seen Lincecum as a more enlightened pick than Morrow, but he was unable to explain his reasoning because, well, that's just not the kind of thing baseball people do on draft day.

"Once a player is selected by another organization, we prefer not to talk about him," Fontaine said, adding: "We don't want them to talk about our guys, either."

It's one of those unwritten rules. You don't steal bases during the late innings of a blowout; you don't bunt to break up a no-hitter; rookies don't stand in the batter's box to admire their work after hitting a home run, and scouting chiefs don't share their thoughts on those they don't draft."

I doubt anyone is still reading this thread, though I´m sure the monitor will? I was wondering whether ee cummings was a baseball fan, and whether and how he would have left comments.
Also, do the writers at ussmariner ever directly interview members of the Mariners? Do they think Bob Fontaine would answer a direct question like "do you and your staff think Morrow was the best available talent at the number five pick"? I think it would be great to combine your analytical skills with interviewing. Thanks.

Regarding Carl "C-Rex" Everett, on Opening Day did anyone happen to see people in the crowd shaking blow-up dinosaurs when Everett's name was announced? I saw it on the TV broadcast VERY briefly. I about died from a serious lack of oxygen! It was nice to see Seattle fans actually have a sense of humor.

Man, this is why I'm the non-token chick. When I tell people I'm a software engineer, they just give me a blank stare.

I haven't been around game threads a lot this year because generally either

1) I'm at Safeco
2) I'm actually watching the game on TV, which means I'm not at a computer
3) I tried to follow the thread, but my brain exploded
42) I had David J Corcoran on my fantasy blogger roster and if he doesn't get a start, it's not worth following
