Game 68, Mariners at Athletics

Washburn vs. Loaiza, 12:35pm.

Hey, glad I checked on the time of today’s game.

Should be a good chance to pick up a win — Loaiza might be a bit distracted, or at least tired, from his late night / early morning out yesterday. Also, he’s been awful this season.

Johjima’s in the lineup today? What happened to the day-game-after-night-game-start-Rivera system?

  2. JMB on June 15th, 2006 12:35 pm

I dunno. I’m just going by Gameday here.

  3. msb on June 15th, 2006 12:40 pm

the way their luck goes, Loaiza is extra-focused due to his recent embarrasment.

ah, Oakland– where the leather-voiced heckler you can hear behind homeplate has a repertoire consisting of ‘you suck’

  4. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 12:41 pm

Fantastic 15 pitch 1-2-3 inning there guys

  5. dks on June 15th, 2006 12:42 pm

“Mariners vs. Angels”? Are you hoping that if we pretend we’re playing the Angels we have a hope of winning?

  6. JMB on June 15th, 2006 12:42 pm

Oooh, radio feed on the MLB.tv broadcast.

  7. JMB on June 15th, 2006 12:43 pm

    Heh. Sorry. Will fix.

ok, everyone wants to go home early.

    Nice inning.

Restaurant Law final in an hour… gotta study some cases.

  11. Cynical Optimist on June 15th, 2006 12:47 pm

Loaiza’s last start @CLE was pretty good, though (7 IP, 5/1 K/BB, 4H, 1 ER) so maybe he’s put his early season injury problems behind him. Small sample size caveats obviously apply, but it seems possible that he may yet live up to expectations (moderate though they were).

    w00t w00t! C-Rex in the house!

    Way to go, “Swishie” ….

  15. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 12:52 pm

Oh SNAP! Nice glove, Nick. At least Loaiza’s ERA won’t go up…

  16. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 12:54 pm

    Nice highball, Loaiza ….

  17. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 12:56 pm

As if Loaiza hasn’t made enough of an ass of himself, now he has to try to do the same to poor Jeremy.

  18. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 12:56 pm

That was a shot down Loiaza’s throat ….

  19. Dave Clapper on June 15th, 2006 12:56 pm

    Wow! Strange inning…

  21. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 12:59 pm

Loaiza needs a stiff Beltre of something right here ….

  22. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:00 pm

    Loaiza downs ANOTHER highball!

  23. JasonB on June 15th, 2006 1:01 pm

How did Ichiro get out? Gameday is claiming he grounded out yet noone on the basepaths moved…?

  24. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:02 pm

Jose. :( Loaiza weaved his way through that inning relatively unscathed.

  25. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:02 pm

He swung, and was out of the batter’s box when the ball bounced up and hit him.

  26. Ed on June 15th, 2006 1:02 pm

    no one*

  27. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:03 pm

#23: Ichiro touched the ball outside of the batter’s box after swinging at it, according to the radio.

  28. sidereal on June 15th, 2006 1:04 pm

Uber-prospect Chad Billingsley is getting his first start for the Dodgers today. So far thrown 27 pitches through 1, but no damage.

  29. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:06 pm

    Now Washie can’t throw a strike… Ugh. :(

  30. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:08 pm

It’s almost as if Jarrod thinks: “Oh, right … I need to have two crappy innings in here somewhere so I can stay in line with my 40th percentile PECOTA projection” ….

  31. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:10 pm

Oh, nooooossss! :moon: I just don’t have a good feeling about this inning.

  32. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:10 pm

    $37.5 million, folks. $37.5 million.

  33. Phoenician Todd on June 15th, 2006 1:11 pm

    Wow, Washburn continues to amaze

  34. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:11 pm

“Oh, those bases on balls” – Dave Niehaus

“I’m just not really surprised.” – Jimmie the Geek

  35. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:14 pm

For FRACK sakes, Washie… just throw a strike :moon

  36. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on June 15th, 2006 1:14 pm

You tell ‘em Niehaus. We are all thinking it.

  37. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:14 pm

Okay, how much did Washburn have to drink?

  38. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 1:14 pm

You know, it just wouldn’t be fair to Oakland to take advantage of them when they shoot themselves in the foot, we need to be gentlemen about this and give them the opportunity to catch up….. grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

  39. Jake on June 15th, 2006 1:15 pm

When you can’t throw a strike to the fearsome Antonio Perez, you should be put out to pasture.

  40. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on June 15th, 2006 1:15 pm

Maybe he was out with Loaiza last night.

  41. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on June 15th, 2006 1:17 pm

By the way, is Woods a lock to replace Pineiro in the rotation?

  42. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:18 pm

“Only two come in to score for the A’s” – Niehaus

“None should have scored for the A’s.” – Mariner’s fans

    37-

Clearly he was at Duffy’s Bar last night…

  44. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:20 pm

My in-house rotation replacements, in order:

    — Livingston
    — Cruceta
    — Blackley
    — Baek
    — Woods

None of which, by the way, are nearly good enough.

  45. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 1:22 pm

Have they announced anything regarding Pineiro? I’m halfway suprised that they haven’t extended him for 2 years allreayd, because after all, he’s one of the “good guys”

  46. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 1:22 pm

An Absolut gem of an inning for Loaiza.

  47. eponymous coward on June 15th, 2006 1:23 pm

Remember when we had Brett Tomko in the MINORS- unable to crack the rotation? And “Pitching is a strength of this organization”? Ah, those were the days…

  48. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:24 pm

That one was so subtle I almost missed it, Jim. ;)

It’s hang on time… Washie’s back up on the mound.

  49. eponymous coward on June 15th, 2006 1:26 pm

Maybe we need to bring in Pat O’Day as a pinch-hitter here.

  50. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on June 15th, 2006 1:27 pm

Nothing official on Pineiro that I’ve heard, but Hargrove was clearly at the end of his rope with him last night.

And this from the Times today:

“Sources say the Mariners are considering moving Pineiro to the bullpen to give him a chance to work out the troubles that have seen him tagged for a 1-5 record and a 7.54 earned-run average in those games.

Asked if it was a coincidence that left-hander Jake Woods was allowed to stretch out to four innings in relief of Pineiro, a club official responded: ‘No, it was not.’”

  51. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:27 pm

There should be a USS Mariner night in a Mariner’s Suite. That would be suite!

  52. Lauren, token chick on June 15th, 2006 1:28 pm

Last night’s game was just demoralizing. I’m glad I was in the gym working out for part of it so that it wasn’t a complete waste.

Today, I require a win. Come on, Washburn. You can do it. No, not like that, not with the doubles.

  53. msb on June 15th, 2006 1:28 pm

#45– According to Drayer, Hargrove said last night he wouldn’t talk about Pineiro, but was a little more wishywashy today, indicating they were thinking they’d make a change, possibly temporary, pretty soon.

#47– I don’t think that was why he didn’t crack the rotation.

  54. Free Dan Rohn! on June 15th, 2006 1:29 pm

#51… but those suites are going fast.

  55. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:29 pm

Holy Cow! Washie struck a batter out. :O

  56. Lauren, token chick on June 15th, 2006 1:29 pm

Huh. I didn’t realize that NO ONE on the A’s (today’s lineup at least) is hitting over .300. That makes the last two days even worse.

  57. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:30 pm

And… there goes the lead, the game and the series.

  58. Joe on June 15th, 2006 1:30 pm

Well, other than Ichiro! NO ONE on the M’s is hitting over .300 either.

  59. Lauren, token chick on June 15th, 2006 1:31 pm

    Aieieieighhhhh

  60. Lauren, token chick on June 15th, 2006 1:31 pm

    Heh. OK, good point, Joe.

  61. msb on June 15th, 2006 1:32 pm

I think the A’s remember Jarrod Washburn.

  62. Joe on June 15th, 2006 1:33 pm

In fact, on today’s lineup, who’s #2? Mr Betancourt, at .291 (about the same as the A’s best, Swisher). And #3, Lopez, at .278 (who has lost what, about .30 since moving down in the batting order?) Ichiro, Betancourt, Lopez — how many were predicting that before the season?

  63. Cynical Optimist on June 15th, 2006 1:35 pm

Hey, on the plus side, only 3.58 years left on Washburn’s 4 year deal….

  64. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:37 pm

Loaiza must have swilled a couple after the first inning.

  65. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:38 pm

    Umm, I phuqued that up.

Loaiza must have swilled a couple Chasers after the first inning.

  66. JI on June 15th, 2006 1:39 pm

We have 5 guys slugging under .400 :0

Oakland’s middle of the order was all hitting .350/.500 or better, at least until Big Frank was DLed for the upcoming All Encompassing Trip through the National League.

  67. JI on June 15th, 2006 1:41 pm

Rizzs is much more tolerable when Niehaus is there to babysit.

  70. msb on June 15th, 2006 1:48 pm

  71. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 1:49 pm

way to auger this one in M’s, I guess that you recognize that when you’re one run down, you’re going to lose? Washburn — Fake an injury or something, just quit serving up those meatballs.

  72. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:50 pm

Well, at least that’s over with.

  73. Dave in Palo Alto on June 15th, 2006 1:52 pm

Are the M’s really losing to the suckiest starter on the A’s staff 24 hours after said sucky hurler woke up in the can?

  74. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:58 pm

    #73: Yes.

  75. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 1:59 pm

  76. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 2:01 pm

I don’t have any problems with Carl or his beliefs. (even if I don’t agree with them). I’m watching him play baseball and perform at a semi-effective level for the M’s, not asking him to educate my children. Heck he’s a more interesting AB than 2/3 of the team.

  77. Jake on June 15th, 2006 2:03 pm

Six hits, all singles. What’s our team slg% in comparison to the rest of the league?

  78. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 2:04 pm

And Beltre flashes the glove, along with his two (!!) walks today. w00t.

  79. Benno on June 15th, 2006 2:05 pm

Is Washburn going to give up 2 this inning? The A’s are just killing us, and it feels like they always have.

  80. Jake on June 15th, 2006 2:06 pm

Today is Reed’s birthday. That means he’s got to hit a bomb.

  81. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on June 15th, 2006 2:08 pm

#76 – I think most of us are not conflicted about him because of his beliefs. It’s more that he is not providing any consistent level of production, despite moments of “pop” that make you wonder if anybody else on the roster would have stepped up. I think he’s probably ended his share of innings too, though I haven’t reviewed the data.

  82. Jake on June 15th, 2006 2:08 pm

…and he did; right into Johnson’s cow pouch.

  83. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on June 15th, 2006 2:14 pm

What’s a good nickname for Fruto?

  84. sidereal on June 15th, 2006 2:14 pm

Billingsley update: no runs allowed through 4, and he singled in both of LA’s runs. The hype is validated!

  85. Jack Howland on June 15th, 2006 2:15 pm

Does anyone remember who the A’s received for Bonderman?

  86. msb on June 15th, 2006 2:15 pm

    #83. um, Fruto?

I gather he is a good dancer, according to Drayer, there was a pre-game dance-off one day (back when they were winning, remember that?) and Fruto apparently has nible feet from his soccer-playing days, if that helps.

  87. Jake on June 15th, 2006 2:16 pm

    #83 Fruto Bandito

  88. Lauren, token chick on June 15th, 2006 2:16 pm

Excellent. How about the Fruit Foot? Then we can all sing along to “get on the fruit foot! get on the fruit foot! aaoooww!”

  89. msb on June 15th, 2006 2:17 pm

#85–”August 22, 2002: Sent by the Oakland Athletics to the Detroit Tigers to complete an earlier deal made on July 5, 2002. The Oakland Athletics sent a player to be named later, Carlos Pena, and Franklyn German to the Detroit Tigers. The New York Yankees sent Ted Lilly, John-Ford Griffin, and Jason Arnold (minors) to the Oakland Athletics. The Detroit Tigers sent Jeff Weaver to the New York Yankees. The Detroit Tigers sent cash to the Oakland Athletics. The Oakland Athletics sent Jeremy Bonderman (August 22, 2002) to the Detroit Tigers to complete the trade”

  90. msb on June 15th, 2006 2:17 pm

#86–that would be nimble, not nible.

  91. Jake on June 15th, 2006 2:17 pm

July 5 – Acquired P Ted Lilly, minor league OF John-Ford Griffin and minor league P Jason Arnold from the New York Yankees as part of a three-team, seven player trade in which the A’s sent IF Carlos Pena, P Franklyn German and a player to be named later (P Jeremy Bonderman on Aug. 22) to Detroit for P Jeff Weaver and cash considerations. The A’s then sent Weaver to New York to complete the deal.

  92. msb on June 15th, 2006 2:18 pm

  93. Jack Howland on June 15th, 2006 2:22 pm

Thanks msb/Jake. I have to think it wasn’t the best deal they have ever made.

By the way, the A’s are giving away pot holders to the first 10K fans for a game against the D-Backs.

    RE:93

Not the best trade but people forget that Arnold was used in the Durazo trade (who had a couple of good years there) and Lilly was pretty good down the stretch in 2003. Bonderman is an awesome talent but he still hasn’t shown enough consistency for all the hype he gets.

  98. Jack Howland on June 15th, 2006 2:30 pm

The radio announcers (a’s) are making fun of the Mariners for having Sexson charge in for a bunt by Payton:

“When is the last time you have seen Payton bunt? Does anybody scout these guys?”.

Fair enough. I wonder if the fact that Billy didn’t want to draft Bonderman in the first place had any factor in it as well?

Depends on what you mean by his beliefs. I don’t have a problem with his no-dinasaurs beliefs, that just makes him stupid. I don’t mind stupid.

But if you mean, say, his child-rearing beliefs, then yeah, I have a big problem.

I’m not conflicted at all, though. I want him to fail. I don’t want his option to vest, and I want him off my team.

He’s providing nothing we couldn’t get elsewhere for free… and wins this year are not so precious to me that I will make a deal that compromises MY beliefs – namely that Carl is a bad man i don’t want on my team.

  111. Phoenician Todd on June 15th, 2006 2:53 pm

    How was the final?

  112. JMB on June 15th, 2006 2:54 pm

Speaking of Everett, remember (well, if you were at the pre-season gathering) how Bavasi said the option would only vest if Carl was “raking”? .241/.318/.377 isn’t even raking for a middle infielder.

  113. JMB on June 15th, 2006 2:55 pm

Aced the final. Professor Gold said I was only the fifth person to do so in the history of the class, and he’s been teaching at least 20 years. On of the other perfect scores belongs to current CIA president Tim Ryan.

    Woo.

  114. Evan on June 15th, 2006 2:55 pm

I thought Bavasi said “kickin’ ass”.

Either way, that’s not what he’s doing.

  115. John in L.A. on June 15th, 2006 2:55 pm

So Ichiro! now has a, what, 16 game hitting streak? And didn’t he only have one O-fer day between this and his last 15+ game hitting streak? Or am I remembering it wrong?

  116. JMB on June 15th, 2006 2:57 pm

I think you’re right on that phrase, Evan.

  117. petec on June 15th, 2006 2:57 pm

He said “kicking ass”. Unless he meant kicking the fans in their collective ass, I think he’s failing.

    Congratulations, JMB. That’s awesome.

unfortunately, his manager is the one running him out there every day, bringing him closer & closer to the vesting number of ABs.

  122. John in L.A. on June 15th, 2006 3:01 pm

    Answering my own question…

Ichiro had 18 in a row, than an O-fer, then 3 in a row, then an O-fer, now 15 in a row.

So he’s hit in 36 of his last 38 games. That’s cool.

And 23 of those 36 games were multi-hit games. 10 of them 3 or more hits each.

  123. Phoenician Todd on June 15th, 2006 3:01 pm

I like JJ, he’s kinda good.

  124. JMB on June 15th, 2006 3:02 pm

I suppose the hope is that Everett continues to not kick ass, Bavasi will take the decision out of Hargrove’s hands. C’mon, Doyle!

M’s don’t play the Angels again until August 18th. Between now and then there are two more series with the A’s which look like the easiest on the schedule. Everything else is against contenders or at least plus-.500 teams (the NL West, all of whom are over .500, plus Detroit, Toronto, New York, Boston, Cleveland). The only bright spots are a series with Tampa Bay August 6 and maybe the Baltimore series July 31. And they only have four games in Texas the whole of July and August (there’s a small mercy).

Of course the M’s swept SD once this season, so maybe there’s some hope there.

  126. JMB on June 15th, 2006 3:05 pm

So much for all that momentum, huh?

  127. Joe on June 15th, 2006 3:07 pm

So that was a save situation? Talk about inflated stats. If there are empty hits, Street certainly has some empty saves (such as every one he’s had against the Ms).

  128. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 3:09 pm

    Yeppers… nice “mo”. :(

JMB, I worked for a Chef in the ’90s that graduated top of her class from the CIA. I applaud you for doing well there, judging frmo the stories she told us it’s not an easy program.

Jeez … what is that, 9 losses in a row to the A’s?

It would be nice to see one of our starters not named Felix go more than 5 innings. Other than the King’s recent CG I don’t think I’ve seen a Mariner pitcher throw less than 50 pitches in 3 innings in the past three weeks or so.

  130. Phoenician Todd on June 15th, 2006 3:17 pm

Jamie threw a CG within the last couple of weeks.

  131. Jim Thomsen on June 15th, 2006 3:17 pm

Bring on the Giants … wonder what the odds are of Meche serving up a tater to Bonds?

  132. mark s. on June 15th, 2006 3:18 pm

Looking at the 21 games leading to the All-Star break.

    SF .508, Dodgers .538, SD .523, Arizona.538, CO.515, LAA .446, Detroit .642

    Any chance of going .500+?

  133. mandy bot on June 15th, 2006 3:21 pm

I just read Jim Thomsen’s comment (#46) about the absolut gem. His comment was an absolute gem… it had me laughing so hard I almost spray juice all over my keyboard!

  134. Dave in Palo Alto on June 15th, 2006 3:23 pm

#127 — Nothing cheap about Street’s save on Monday — bases loaded, no outs, heart of the order coming up — other than the team at bat being who they were.

  135. eponymous coward on June 15th, 2006 3:23 pm

I’d take .500 through that schedule.

More good news: C-Rex will be sitting/PHing for all those NL road games (unless Hargrove decides to be a complete idiot and puts him in the OF- which would mean he’d be benching either Ichiro or Raul).

All C-Rex needs is one cold series at home and he’ll be nice and iced for June.

  136. David J. Corcoran I on June 15th, 2006 3:32 pm

Gosh, listening to the Mariners lose while waiting on a ferry makes me grumpy. Vashon is interesting, but it makes McCall look like civilization…

  137. David J. Corcoran I on June 15th, 2006 3:33 pm

And if anybody is wondering, it makes Traffic In McCall look desireable. All these 4 way stops are stooped

  138. msb on June 15th, 2006 3:33 pm

#135– at least according to Finnigan: “”When we go without a DH, Carl will be the odd man out,” manager Mike Hargrove said.” Hickey however says “Hargrove said that Everett, an outfielder before becoming a DH, is shagging and taking some fly balls in the outfield before games. Hargrove said there is a chance Everett could play in the outfield.”

  139. Jimmie the Geek on June 15th, 2006 3:35 pm

Are all the callers on the post game shows idiots? (rhetorical question)

DJC: Vashon is Hippie central. :)

  140. eponymous coward on June 15th, 2006 3:36 pm

In other random notes: Kenny Rogers, who was pretty universally panned as a FA signing: 9-3, 3.25 as a Tiger.

    Esteban Loaiza, who wasn’t: 2-3, 6.03.

Weird, weird world. Sometimes, we just peer into a glass but darkly.

  141. David J. Corcoran I on June 15th, 2006 3:39 pm

so I noticed, I’m surrounded in people without deodorant :S

  142. eponymous coward on June 15th, 2006 3:39 pm

Sure, there’s a chance he’d play in the OF. However, starting Everett means benching Raul or Ichiro, playing Carl in CF, or shifting Ichiro to CF. None of these are particularly desirable.

I’m going to go with “he’ll pinch hit some and maybe go in on some double switch that makes the announcers go OOOOOH”.

  143. mark s. on June 15th, 2006 3:48 pm

Carl should get the chance to play CF. Maybe he will get hurt go to the DL and find his way off the team once Doyle comes back.

  144. msb on June 15th, 2006 3:54 pm

Drayer thinks if they make any decision on Pineiro, we’ll hear tomorrow, as the discussion would likely take place on the plane home.

  145. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 3:55 pm

Off the team? Just stick him on the bench; that’s close enough. Hargove uses his bench so little that the M’s could probably sneak into this weekend’s series with a 27 man roster and nobody would ever know.

    “Now batting — Roberto Petegini(sp)?”

opposing dugout “Peta-who-ni? who the heck is that? Ah, don’t worry about him, just some guy on their bench”

  146. Bender on June 15th, 2006 4:03 pm

So if last week was the snooze button on firing Hargrove, what is this sweep?

  147. argh on June 15th, 2006 4:10 pm

If Vashon’s interesting it must have gotten a face-lift. Excellent place to film a re-make of the Blair Witch Project though.

  148. Swungonandbelted on June 15th, 2006 4:15 pm

    146. Maybe, hopefully, it will be viewed as an indictment of how bad the Angels really are, and maybe the sweep over them will be a little less meaningful. At this point though, unless the wheels totally come off, I’d expect to see Hargrove retained until after the season. Too far out of character for this club to make a radical change midseason.

Fruto’s nickname should be Fruto Pebbles.

  150. Joe on June 15th, 2006 4:44 pm

I do look forward to tbe Boston series just for the chance to see the all-cereal at-bat: Fruto (Loops) vs Coco Crisp.

“HEART OF THE ORDER” (See # 134) – Murderers Row ?

  152. BelaXadux on June 15th, 2006 7:13 pm

Yeah, e-coward, I’ve been keeping an eye on Kenny the Rogers, the guy who’s results last year weren’t sustainable just like they haven’t been sustainable for ten years. Of course, with J-Rod reverting to the mean for the anti-Midas Mariners, Rogers shouldn’t be that far behind, one does suppose.

  153. BelaXadux on June 15th, 2006 7:24 pm

This is a beau-uuuu-tiful day to be out on Vashon. I love going there in June. The Sound among the mountains is like cup in the hands of the gods, and the sun has nothing finer to do than sit up in that sky and shine. . . . Wish I was there, rather than in the ‘bomb shelter,’ though here even the collateral blowback of the Ms flop-a-roonie in Oakland can’t spatter on my shoe, so. As for the others in the 8% who voted for an 0-3 result in that series, it hurts to be right, but thees team, she STEEEEENKS!

  154. Joe on June 15th, 2006 8:14 pm

A heart that doesn’t beat, in the corpse of a team that doesn’t hit.
