no first baseman for tonights game? Or is Lopez covering two bags today?

nah, we’re gonna beat them with 7 people + washburn

we still need to hire Ng for GM and bring up Rohn for manager.

Will a Mariner pitcher hit a home run in interleague play, and if so, which pitcher is most likely to do it?

I really can’t overstate how much I like Vin Scully. He is almost, by himself, enough to make me a Dodger fan. Almost.

Last night as the game ended he did his “Have a good night…” send off and I actually decided I should do exactly that.

My night was good because Vin Scully told me to make it so.

  25. JMB on June 21st, 2006 7:18 pm

    Saenz.

In Tacome: Baek walks two, strikes out the side — including Justin Leone — in the first inning on 28 pitches.

One of the walks was to Jack Cust, who does nothing but walk. Or the other one.

    Perfect game for Washburn tonight!?!

  46. Jim Thomsen on June 21st, 2006 7:34 pm

Aaaaaaggggh. Doyle hits into a double play.

How brilliant is Mike Hargrove? He asks Reed to bunt Johjima to third, which makes no sense unless you knew what the skip did … that Washburn would “work” Billingsley for a walk. BRILLIANT!!

  47. apunetid on June 21st, 2006 7:34 pm

  52. Mere Tantalisers on June 21st, 2006 7:44 pm

You guys can knock Grover all you want. I judge a skipper by his jowls, and Hargrove is head and shoulders (and cheeks) over Bob Melvin in that department. Ya’ll forget too quickly.

  53. terry on June 21st, 2006 7:47 pm

I’ve been thinking a lot about this lately and while I never wish that someone would lose their job, I simply can’t truly love the M’s (expressed by me spending copious amounts of money on Ms garb and paraphernalia) while Grover is at the helm…. on the bright side, I’m getting richer with each day he’s still around but i do have that sullen, empty feeling that I’m missing something in my life….

I just have so much love to give if only that fickle-hearted M’s FO would reciprocate…

First SB for Beltre since May 5th.

  58. Mat on June 21st, 2006 7:56 pm

That brings Beltre to a 72% career SB success rate. That’s a good enough rate that it’s nice to have around late in games where it makes sense to play for one run.

  59. Mere Tantalisers on June 21st, 2006 7:56 pm

Hitting behind Ichiro seems to really work magic for underachievers. It was great for Lopez, it was equally good for Winn before him, and now its doing what Pentland, training, and hypnotherapy could not – its rehabilitating the Big B. M’s should rent that spot out to clubs with struggling sluggers and underperforming callups. Can’t think of any good candidates now but I’m sure some will come to mind.

  60. DMZ on June 21st, 2006 7:58 pm

  65. JH on June 21st, 2006 8:01 pm

Man, I remember when Neihaus saying “My Oh My!” meant the Mariners had hit a home run, or in some other way done something incredible.

  70. AMarshal2 on June 21st, 2006 8:04 pm

Billingsley isn’t all that impressive so far. I’ve heard his fastball sits in the mid 90’s but he doesn’t seem to have that tonight. Obviously the breaking ball he threw to Sexon was pretty good and he does have a full arsenal of pitches. With only 3 innings of watching Billingsley in my life, I definately don’t like him as much as Lester right now and he’s way, way behind Liriano. John Manuel actually preferred Billingsley coming into this year.

  71. Mere Tantalisers on June 21st, 2006 8:05 pm

    Yeah, Otsuka blew it again

  72. AMarshal2 on June 21st, 2006 8:05 pm

    Sexson, excuse me.

  73. Mat on June 21st, 2006 8:06 pm

…and he’s way, way behind Liriano.

I think that could be said for a large number of pitchers in this league.

  74. AMarshal2 on June 21st, 2006 8:08 pm

Right. It’s impossible to watch Liriano pitch and not be convinced he’s got a very bright future. I just find it odd that BA and in particular, John Manuel, pumped up Billingsley so much. He’s not in Liriano’s class.

  80. VandalJeff on June 21st, 2006 8:11 pm

    Jim,

Niehaus was trying to figure out the trivia question at the time!

  81. Mat on June 21st, 2006 8:11 pm

Yeah, Billingsley does have some awfully nice numbers in the minors, though. I guess I could see where there would be an allure there, though I’ve only “seen” him pitch on Gameday tonight. He’ll probably be fine, though just how fine is up for debate.

  82. pablothegreat on June 21st, 2006 8:11 pm

Valle just mentioned it as I started typing, but the catcher yelled at Johjima as he crossed home plate. It will be interesting to see if Johjima gets some chin music the next time he steps up to the plate.

  83. Jack Howland on June 21st, 2006 8:11 pm

I agree. It does sound like something is wrong with Niehaus tonight. He sounds worse than normal.

  85. Daniel Carroll on June 21st, 2006 8:14 pm

Then again, I’m not broadcasting from the booth.

  86. msb on June 21st, 2006 8:14 pm

why would Russell have been yelling at Joh?

  87. Mat on June 21st, 2006 8:14 pm

It will be interesting to see if Johjima gets some chin music the next time he steps up to the plate.

What for? Did he grandstand after hitting the HR? Sour grapes?

  88. pablothegreat on June 21st, 2006 8:15 pm

86 and 87: He stood in the box for awhile after his home run. I think Johjima thought it might go foul but the catcher thought he was grandstanding.

  89. msb on June 21st, 2006 8:18 pm

    what did Vin think?

  90. apunetid on June 21st, 2006 8:18 pm

The M’s have had two men on base at some point in each inning.

  91. Mere Tantalisers on June 21st, 2006 8:18 pm

Anyone have any clue how the pitch location on Gameday is figured? Is it pretty accurate, or is it just guesswork?

  92. Mat on June 21st, 2006 8:19 pm

I kind of wonder if you get more misunderstandings like that in interleague play. If they’d played against Johjima more, they’d probably realize he’s not exactly the boasting sort.

  93. Mere Tantalisers on June 21st, 2006 8:24 pm

Colorado’s closer (I think he’s their closer) just blew it…

  94. Mere Tantalisers on June 21st, 2006 8:26 pm

Oh look at that, he pitched 12 innings for the Ms in 01

  95. JMB on June 21st, 2006 8:26 pm

  96. Nate on June 21st, 2006 8:28 pm

  97. apunetid on June 21st, 2006 8:29 pm

Well sure he didn’t lose, but he certainly blew it.

  102. Jim Thomsen on June 21st, 2006 8:30 pm

    That was weird.

  146. LB on June 21st, 2006 9:27 pm

Why bother to double-switch when the “hitter” you stick in the pitcher’s spot is batting a cool .121?

  147. Rick L on June 21st, 2006 9:29 pm

    146. I am baffled by the logic of taking Johjima out.

  148. Tek Jansen on June 21st, 2006 9:30 pm

Worst double switch ever! Double Switch Morse or Bloomquist for anyone. Pinch hit Petagine in the pitcher’s spot. Bad move.

  158. LB on June 21st, 2006 9:32 pm

  159. Mad Jenny on June 21st, 2006 9:32 pm

  163. LB on June 21st, 2006 9:34 pm

Time for some agressive M’s baserunning to put a man in scoring position, no?

  164. Ed on June 21st, 2006 9:34 pm

In fact, if Reed just gets better the further into California he gets, those Padres are dead in the water.

    Now that’s organizational genius.

#208, Exactly… was just on the phone and was goin crazy. good to see ESPN having it on so at least SOME people can see this comeback, maybe give the M’s smaller names some respect.

  214. mark s. on June 21st, 2006 10:02 pm

#212 no if the team gets 3 more runs in the 9th. Eddie will be sent out there to even things up for the box score tomorrow.

  215. argh on June 21st, 2006 10:03 pm

#200: Get a new friend. Just consider the math: only 162 games in the regular season but there are nearly 7 billion people on the planet with whom you could make friends.

Moral: do not let so-called friends interfere with your baseball.

  216. Andren on June 21st, 2006 10:04 pm

Friends come and go, but Mariner rallies are few and far between.

  217. Daniel Carroll on June 21st, 2006 10:07 pm

  218. Lauren, token chick on June 21st, 2006 10:07 pm

  220. argh on June 21st, 2006 10:08 pm

Hey, I’d expect someone with “token chick” in their name to understand when a guy gets confused by the presence of more than one woman on an internet sports site.

    Jeez, Putz’s splitter is ridiculous.

  229. seattlesundevil on June 21st, 2006 10:14 pm

  238. Lauren, token chick on June 21st, 2006 10:46 pm

By the way, did anyone catch the horrifying-but-awesome quote from Ozzie Guillen after he called a Sun-Times columnist a fag? He defended himself with this awesome list: he has a) gay friends, b) has been to WNBA games, c) has been to a Madonna concert and d) plans to go to the Gay Games.

    WNBA! Madonna! Oh, Ozzie.

  239. Rusty on June 21st, 2006 10:47 pm

Sometimes it really is worth it to go through an entire game log after a game has ended. Highlights…

Someone making the association between Kim Ng and TMBG’s song Anna Ng. As the Guinness guys would say, Brilliant! Love that song.

Vin Scully scolding Mike Hargrove on air for bunting… simply great. Scully probably knows more about optimum National League hitting strategy than any AL manager. It reminds me of Hargrove getting testy with the media in his World Series with Cleveland about all the questions surrounding managing strategy with pitchers in the lineup. At the time he claimed it wasn’t rocket science. Then he promptly blew his first double switch. What a tool!

The intermittent reports on the game in Tacoma. Thanks.

And finally, no one referring to Adrian as “Bustre”. Boy, that got old last year.

Oh, and all of you made it easy to read through the thread. Most comments from 2-5 lines long. No BelaTrdux in this one.

  240. Mad Jenny on June 21st, 2006 10:52 pm

I’m a student living in Moscow, which is on the WA/ID boarder about 4 hours north-ish of McCall. Though I’ve driven through to Montana several times I’ve never really been that far into Idaho. I would be of no use to you for this task. Sorry.

  241. Mad Jenny on June 21st, 2006 10:55 pm

#234 I also often don’t get home until the 7th inning or later so I’m playing catch up to see what HAS GONE on instead of reading what IS GOING on.

  242. Ed on June 21st, 2006 10:56 pm

I don’t like going that far south in Idaho, either. Get too far and the streets are all numbered like Utah.

That Ozzie Guillen stuff is almost charmingly ignorant. I also liked the part where he said “fag” isn’t about gay people in Venezuela, it’s about calling a man a coward.

  243. Rusty on June 21st, 2006 11:00 pm

I just realized that I went through McCall after overnighting in Grangeville a couple of years back. Blanked it right from my short term memory for some reason. Not much going on in central Idaho, although the 2 or 3 people I spoke to on my trip certainly believe it’s God’s paradise on Earth.

  244. prospect21 on June 21st, 2006 11:01 pm

Did anyone listen to The radio post game show? Dave Niehaus is just Hilarously crazy.

They all voted Adrian Beltre player of the game, Dave N. comes on and says… “I would like to hope on his back and ride him for awhile.” Obviously he means the Mariners can really benefit with him hitting good, but man, watch what you say.

  245. pablothegreat on June 21st, 2006 11:03 pm

238: Since the Chicago Sun-Times columnist he called a fag was Jay Mariotti, I think we can give him a free pass.

  246. Rusty on June 21st, 2006 11:07 pm

There are cultural differences in language. Ozzie dug himself into a huge hole but that part of his comment was the only insightful part of his entire dialogue. But by then he was just throwing darts while blindfolded.

Per cultural differences in language, in the U.S. the n-word is a racial epithet and considered rude and vulgar. In much of South America it is a perfectly acceptable word for describing people of dark skin.

  247. msb on June 21st, 2006 11:13 pm

this time, however, Ozzie did refrain from linking homosexuality and child abuse, though …. there is the classic response last year from White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf after a fair numbe of Ozzie-isms:

“Ozzie is the Hispanic Jackie Mason,” Reinsdorf explained, when asked how he deals with Guillen’s talkative tendencies. “If you look at him in that light, you don’t worry about anything he says.”

  248. msb on June 21st, 2006 11:21 pm

updates: according to Drayer, it will be Lowe tomorrow and not Tomko, and I’m thinking I might go for Jim Morris’ book “The oldest rookie” for my nephew….

  249. Ed on June 21st, 2006 11:27 pm

245: Possibly. I recognize the same word can have way different meanings depending on the culture, but I’d have a hard time believing “maricon” (or similar Spanish slang) doesn’t mean “coward” in the same way in Venezuela that “fag” can mean “weak” or “girlish” or “sissy” in the U.S. A 15-year-old might not literally be calling his friend gay when he throws a homophobic epithet at him, but he’s still using the negative associations with gay people to denigrate somone.

In this case, I’m not sure Guillen’s explanation of cultural differences is any more valid than him proving he’s not homophobic by rattling off a list of gay stereotypes he’s participated in.

  250. sankthetank on June 21st, 2006 11:38 pm

Just got back from the game. I am so pumped to be an M’s fan now. Dodger Stadium is an experience with its laid-backness, its 8 dollar small beers, and its cholos, and the M’s made it a magical night — they have done me proud. Wish me luck, I’m gonna do my damndest to bring a broom into the stadium tomorrow! Give it up for duct-taping it to my back!

  252. pablothegreat on June 22nd, 2006 12:21 am

250: I wasn’t really debating the use of the word “fag” so much as I was just saying that Mariotti probably deserves any insult thrown his way.

By they way, Guillen has apologized.

The Mariners are still undefeated in interleague play and might sweep the Dodgers.

Is this winning streak just a fluke or real? And are the Mariners contenders or pretenders for a playoff spot?

Maybe they should petition to be moved to the NL West.
