The Mariners are still undefeated in interleague play and might sweep the Dodgers.

Is this winning streak just a fluke or real? And are the Mariners contenders or pretenders for a playoff spot?

Maybe they should petition to be moved to the NL West.

Just got back from the game. I am so pumped to be an M’s fan now. Dodger Stadium is an experience with its laid-backness, its 8 dollar small beers, and its cholos, and the M’s made it a magical night — they have done me proud. Wish me luck, I’m gonna do my damndest to bring a broom into the stadium tomorrow! Give it up for duct-taping it to my back!

I recognize the same word can have way different meanings depending on the culture, but I’d have a hard time believing “maricon” (or similar Spanish slang) doesn’t mean “coward” in the same way in Venezuela that “fag” can mean “weak” or “girlish” or “sissy” in the U.S. A 15-year-old might not literally be calling his friend gay when he throws a homophobic epithet at him, but he’s still using the negative associations with gay people to denigrate somone.

In this case, I’m not sure Guillen’s explanation of cultural differences is any more valid than him proving he’s not homophobic by rattling off a list of gay stereotypes he’s participated in.

this time, however, Ozzie did refrain from linking homosexuality and child abuse, though …. there is the classic response last year from White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf after a fair numbe of Ozzie-isms:

“Ozzie is the Hispanic Jackie Mason,” Reinsdorf explained, when asked how he deals with Guillen’s talkative tendencies. “If you look at him in that light, you don’t worry about anything he says.”

There are cultural differences in language. Ozzie dug himself into a huge hole but that part of his comment was the only insightful part of his entire dialogue. But by then he was just throwing darts while blindfolded.

Per cultural differences in language, in the U.S. the n-word is a racial epithet and considered rude and vulgar. In much of South America it is a perfectly acceptable word for describing people of dark skin.
