Hello Doooooooooooooooyle

Dave · July 26, 2006 at 10:51 am · Filed Under Mariners

Chris Snelling is going to join the Mariners this evening in time for tonight’s game against the Blue Jays. Carl Everett has been designated for assignment to create room on the roster.

And there was much rejoicing.

    Huuuuzzzzaaaaaaaaah!

Although I’d rather see a deal for Dellucci, this is great. Makes my day.

Can I change my answer to “The question of the day to… GRRRREATTT!!!!

  9. JI on July 26th, 2006 10:58 am

I feel bad for Carl, they strung him along for so long hintingthat the might just pick up his opt– sorry I can’t type that with a straight fact– WOOT!!! Ding Dong The Witch Is Dead!!!

Any idea on how they use Doyle? I assume Perez still plays v. LHP, but will they rotate him and Ibanez between LF and DH?

  10. shortbus on July 26th, 2006 10:58 am

I had planned to focus my attention and dollars on the Seahawks starting in August, but watching Doyle in the bigs makes the M’s a lot more intriguing.

Is there any chance we can secret Hargrove in Carl’s luggage when he leaves town?

  11. Deanna on July 26th, 2006 10:59 am

Aaaaaaaaaaaa I already went to two Mariners games this series, I have no desire to go to another one just to cheer on Doyle. Arrrrgh. I guess I could wait until I see the lineup and if he’s in it, head down…

  12. vj on July 26th, 2006 11:00 am

Great. The timing is puzzling, however.

  13. Bob Loblaw on July 26th, 2006 11:00 am

Will he DH? Play LF? Maybe a little of both? Or is Grover going to let him rot on the bench?

  14. Coach on July 26th, 2006 11:00 am

Outstanding!!! Feels like a huge weight has been lifted. Although it is long overdue, this has got to be a huge step in the turn-around.

please tell me this isn’t a joke.

Doyle arrives . .Carl Everett gone. . . I think I am going to pass out . .Even if both these things were destined to happen, who could have thought it would happen on the same day. . .Does this mean the players can talk about dinosaurs in the clubhouse again?

  19. Dave on July 26th, 2006 11:03 am

Official announcement will be made soon. I guess I’m foolish to think I’ve earned a little bit of trust with announcements like this…

  20. msb on July 26th, 2006 11:04 am

    #12– why?

and just this morning Bavasi was saying to Fred Claire that they really needed to improve the left-handed side of the DH platoon :)

  21. Coach Owens on July 26th, 2006 11:04 am

    Got a source Dave?

  22. JI on July 26th, 2006 11:04 am

Plus, the Adam Jones report was accurate, wasn’t it?

  23. Coach Owens on July 26th, 2006 11:05 am

Sorry hadn’t refreshed before I typed it.

  24. Dave on July 26th, 2006 11:06 am

KJR’s got it too. We’re not both making it up.

  25. JI on July 26th, 2006 11:06 am

    7th?

  26. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on July 26th, 2006 11:06 am

Dave’s record (without looking it up) has been pretty solid on this stuff.

  27. msb on July 26th, 2006 11:06 am

    I believe you, Dave.

Wierdly, Carl did seem to have some of that ‘clubhouse leadership and veteran presence’– if there was only some way to get it without the attendent bat and baggage….

  28. vj on July 26th, 2006 11:07 am

I recall there once was a site heading next to “U.S.S. Mariner” along the lines of “The Cult of Doyle, Ayatolah Zumsteg presiding”

Personally, I always believe Dave being the naive Phoenician that I am :p However, I do like to see the official announcements to read what Bavasi has to say about things.

  35. Tom Davis on July 26th, 2006 11:09 am

Personally, I have not seen an announcement Dave has made in advance of the news outlets ever turn out to be wrong. Relatively small sample size, sure, but I’m willing to put my money on him.

  36. discojock on July 26th, 2006 11:09 am

Dave, you’re the man! One could say it’s the norm that when random blog-owner states they have inside information with out revealing sources, that one should be sceptical. Not the case, as we have learned over and over, when the author is one Dave Cameron. Cheers! and be well.

  39. brian_sun on July 26th, 2006 11:12 am

I am at work. When I heard the news, I was so happy that I almost screamed into the monitor. That’s the best news I’ve heard all season. Took 100 games for Bavasi to take the large sucking hole of a DH from grover’s line up card. They got 62 games to go. And frankly, even if Doyle doesn’t get even 1 hit from now on, I am happy.

  40. revbill on July 26th, 2006 11:12 am

Dave’s record (without looking it up) has been pretty solid on this stuff.

I don’t remember him ever being wrong with an announcement like this. He does have sources.

Boy, if Everett was mad when he wasn’t getting enough playing time, I wonder what kind of mood he was in when they told him about the DFA. I hope someone video taped it.

I, for one, will happily take Dave’s word for it.

I’m waiting to see what number Doyle will wear this time and I’m going to have to get myself a jersey. The dark one, methinks.

Yay! I kind of feel like lighting off some fireworks.

  48. Mike Snow on July 26th, 2006 11:16 am

He’s been in a slump down at Tacoma lately. One hopes that the timing is a little more fortuitous than it was with Choo, who was red-hot when he was called up, then slumped in his brief trial in Seattle. If this could flip the other way round, it would be nice.

  49. Andy Stallings on July 26th, 2006 11:16 am

Doubts? Jokes? If this thread were filled with nothing but 100 “hurrahs” and “at last!s”, it’d be the best reading I’ve had all summer.

    Goddamn!

  50. Bob Loblaw on July 26th, 2006 11:16 am

I’m going to be interested to hear what Hargrove has to say as it seems he was his biggest fan. He supposedly encouraged Bavasi to go get him in the offseason and refused to remove him from the line-up or pinch hit for him.

  51. deltwelve on July 26th, 2006 11:16 am

    It’s faaaaantastic.

100 games late, but fantastic. Yeah, Doyle wasn’t healthy at the beginning of the year, but still, 100 games late.

  55. brian_sun on July 26th, 2006 11:18 am

Somehow, I don’t believe this is the last move. Bavasi must have something else up his sleeve. I think we will see Delucci in the lineup before July 31. Can’t see Grover putting Doyle’s name in the lineup every day. But either way, it’s better than seeing a giant sucking hole in DH everyday.

  56. Mouse in a Bottle on July 26th, 2006 11:19 am

IMO it took 100 games to DFA Jurassic because it takes time to build up the huevos to fire a guy like that. You never know what he’s going to do next.

  57. Wells on July 26th, 2006 11:22 am
  58. Frinklin on July 26th, 2006 11:23 am

But…but….leadership! He won a World Series last year! How can we go on without Crazy Carl?

  59. Knuckles Buchanan on July 26th, 2006 11:24 am

Is there a chance this is a prelude to the final canning of Hargrove? Sort of a, “Fine, if you’re going to continue wasting the DH spot on C. Rex, I’m going to take that option away from you.” Of course, now Hargrove will probably insert WFB as the DH…

  60. msb on July 26th, 2006 11:25 am

FWIW, Drayer said last week that Everett had not been a disruption, nor had he pitched a fit about playing time. The much-reported ‘heard from outside the office’ report of a blow-up in Hargrove’s office was said to be about another matter all-together.

  61. DoesntCompute on July 26th, 2006 11:25 am

From the official announcement, “We are a better team today with Eddie Perez, Greg Dobbs and Chris getting more at-bats in the DH spot.”

    Ya think?

  64. 元気!!! on July 26th, 2006 11:28 am

“We are a better team today with Eddie Perez, Greg Dobbs and Chris getting more at-bats in the DH spot.”

  65. Karen on July 26th, 2006 11:28 am

    Is today April Fool’s Day?

  66. DoesntCompute on July 26th, 2006 11:28 am

I am as glad as anyone to be rid of Carl but why DFA him now? The trading deadline is in 5 days. Whatever value he had, is gone now because they have no leverage. Why not try to trade him in the next 5 days and if that doesn’t work then DFA him?

  67. brian_sun on July 26th, 2006 11:29 am

I was in Chicago last year. It took someone like Ozzie Guillen to contain Carl. He wasn’t destructive, but there was a time when Frank Thomas came back from the DL and he lost playing time, that he complained to the paper about it. Grover is no Ozzie. Quite frankly, I never thought this marriage would work from the start. He bad-mouthed Kenny Williams and the White Sox after he became a FA and signed with the M’s. I can’t imagine what he would say about Bavasi and the M’s now. However, here is the interesting quote from Bavasi:

“Our primary focus is to win games right now,” Bavasi said. “We are a better team today with Eddie Perez, Greg Dobbs and Chris getting more at-bats in the DH spot. In addition, today’s move does not preclude us from continuing to look for more offense in the trade market.”

  68. kingp on July 26th, 2006 11:29 am

I was just thinking i would check out USSM to see if mabey Carl had been designated and boy did i just make a scene at work. I pumped my fist just as hard as i did for Richie’s walk off on Sunday. As an Australian and M’s fan, i am super pumped to see Snelling in the lineup

  69. DoesntCompute on July 26th, 2006 11:29 am

#64 – Even with Dobbs in the list, it was a true statement.

  70. David J. Corcoran I on July 26th, 2006 11:29 am

That worries me that Greg Dobbs is going to be getting a share of the at bats.

  71. msb on July 26th, 2006 11:29 am

perhaps they have tried (and tried) to trade him already, and that oddly enough no one wants his veteran leadership?

  72. Brian Rust on July 26th, 2006 11:31 am

Leverage??? And just how much leverage do you suppose Carl’s performance gives the team anyway?!?!?

  73. 元気!!! on July 26th, 2006 11:31 am

    #66 –
Because that’s waste of 16 outs in the next 4 games.

  74. Brian Rust on July 26th, 2006 11:31 am

Wow, seems like Word Press is holding up pretty well.

  75. brian_sun on July 26th, 2006 11:32 am

Will we say: “Hello, Dave Delucci” in the next 5 days?

  76. pygmalion on July 26th, 2006 11:33 am

59 I mentioned that as a “nightmare scenario” a month or so ago…despite Hargrove’s love for WFB and crazy line-ups, filling out a card with “Bloomquist – DH” would require something on the level of a stroke or collapsed skull.

  77. Mouse in a Bottle on July 26th, 2006 11:34 am

I really hope that Bavasi is just throwing Dobbs a bone in that statement, and that he does not intend for him to get at bats. Haven’t we been down that road?

  78. Dave on July 26th, 2006 11:35 am

Carl Everett has zero trade value. He’s going to be released, I’d imagine. And, the whole “DFA eliminates leverage” logic is false anyways.

And yes, the M’s still may go get Dellucci or a similar left-handed bat to help fill the DH role. Snelling still needs somewhat regular days off, and really, there’s nothing wrong with having him coming off the bench a couple times a week if you have another solid hitter to keep him fresh.

  79. 元気!!! on July 26th, 2006 11:35 am

    Probably just line filler.

  80. Robo Ape on July 26th, 2006 11:37 am

#77 If, for example, we give Raul a rest, or play either Snelling or Raul in center (and the other in left), it would make sense to give Dobbs the DH against righties, no?

  81. Robo Ape on July 26th, 2006 11:37 am

    Oh, and incidentally:

    WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  82. DoesntCompute on July 26th, 2006 11:38 am

I’m not saying we could or would have gotten much for Carl but by DFA’ing him you will likely get nothing. What little value he may have had is gone because any GM stupid enough to take him just has to wait 10 days to get him for free.

As far as the wasted outs, you tell Hargrove that if he puts Carl into a game again that he will be fired. That way, if Carl does make an out, it would be a productive out.

  83. DMZ on July 26th, 2006 11:38 am

I may have to go to the game and wear my Doyle jersey.

  84. AK4Sea on July 26th, 2006 11:38 am

#80 – Uh… if Raul Ibanez ever plays centerfield, then God hates us and is no longer being subtle.

  85. Mouse in a Bottle on July 26th, 2006 11:39 am

80: It wouldn’t make sense to play Snelling (coming off an injury) or Raul in center field.

  86. Rain Delay on July 26th, 2006 11:40 am

    ’bout friggin time!!!!

  87. JI on July 26th, 2006 11:40 am

What little value he may have had is gone because any GM stupid enough to take him just has to wait 10 days to get him for free.

Unless more than one GM wants him.

Worked out pretty good with Shea HIllenbrand, don’t ya think?

DFA is the best course of action, otherwise CARL WOULD STILL BE ON THE ROSTER while they were trying to move him.

  88. DMZ on July 26th, 2006 11:40 am

Okay, but again, you’re assuming that they didn’t try and move him earlier, when, according to your reasoning, they had leverage.

It’s true they most likely get nothing when they DFA a player but that’s because the player is nearly worthless or causing the team a huge problem if you DFA him.

It’s like standing around the car cuber bitching that people could have gotten more for their cars if they’d spent more time trying to sell them. You’re making an assumption that there are buyers, that the value of the sale would make up for the difficulty of finding them, and moreover, that the car has value and they didn’t already invest that kind of effort.

    Also: Carl sucks.

  89. VaBeachMarinersFan on July 26th, 2006 11:41 am

    re: 80

Raul in center? Are you serious? I think the Doyle giddiness has gotten to you.

My wife will be so much happier now that I won’t be cussing out my computer screen when I see Everetts name in the lineup.

    Woooooooo Hoooooo!!!

  90. Dave on July 26th, 2006 11:41 am

I’m not saying we could or would have gotten much for Carl but by DFA’ing him you will likely get nothing. What little value he may have had is gone because any GM stupid enough to take him just has to wait 10 days to get him for free.

It just doesn’t work that way. Players who have value will fetch value whether the other team has the leverage of holding onto him or not. The value in a player comes from competition for acquiring him from other teams, not from the original team holding the player. Milton Bradley was DFA’d, then traded for two of the Dodgers top prospects. When a player is DFA’d, and multiple teams are interested, you can still get value for the player.

When a player is DFA’d, and no one is interested, you weren’t going to get anything anyways. Seriously, there’s nothing to complain about here. Stop looking for something.

  91. JI on July 26th, 2006 11:41 am

I though we were supposed to be able to get E. Santana for Carl. What gives? It looks like the Mariner broadcast team lied to me again! :(

  92. wabbles on July 26th, 2006 11:45 am

There is a God! Finally! And now we won’t have him for 2007! And we have DOYLE! Freaking DOYLE! ‘doing the happy dance’ ‘doing the Hampster Dance’ ‘doing any freaking dance’ Interesting to see if this quells the trade deadline talk, since it seems to solve at least a couple problems.

  93. VaughnStreet on July 26th, 2006 11:45 am

Not to rain on this parade, because this announcement totally makes my day, but Doyle isn’t a .247 hitter. Is he in a slump, suffering from small-sample-size-itis, or having some specific kind of problem?

And Dave, cool nuggets of info like this are why I and countless other USSM fans are relentlessly wearing out your servers. So, thanks!

  94. Russ on July 26th, 2006 11:46 am

Seriously, there’s nothing to complain about here.

Understatement of the year right here…

  95. Joe on July 26th, 2006 11:47 am

I’m pumped by this move too, but, like Griffey, won’t we all just be waiting for Snelling to go down with an injury? The guy can hit, when he’s not horizontal on a gurney.

  96. Robo Ape on July 26th, 2006 11:47 am

89: I know, Raul in center is a terrible idea, but depending on how Doyle is feeling and what his range is like, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that in a game or two especially against an RHP. Obviously I would rather see Ichi out there, but I don’t think that’ll be happening any time soon.

The point of the post was just to say that if we’re facing an RHP it would make sense to see Dobbs get the DH and have Doyle and Raul at OF positions rather than DHing.

  97. The Unknown Comic on July 26th, 2006 11:48 am

The good news is Everett is gone, the bad news is Snelling will probably last a week at most until he is back on the DL for the rest of the year.

  98. DMZ on July 26th, 2006 11:49 am

Yes, yes, we know you all think he’s fragile and will explode on the way up I-5. You mention it every time his name comes up in discussion.

Would you please, for once, shut the fuck up about it for a couple hours?

  99. DoesntCompute on July 26th, 2006 11:49 am

I am in no way complaining. This is about the best thing to happen to the M’s this year (I despise Carl). I was simply commenting on the timing being weird. In any negotiation, if you put an artificial deadline on yourself you weaken your position. Strange things happen at the trading deadline and some GM might hit the bottle too hard and suddenly see something worthwhile in Carl like Bavasi did this offseason. Who knows, I doubt it but we might still trade him before the deadline anyway.

  100. scraps on July 26th, 2006 11:50 am

  104. bermanator on July 26th, 2006 11:52 am

On the DFA thing … the Phillies DFA’d the immortal Sal Fasano the other day, and the Yankees gave up a minor leaguer to get him. If Everett has value, Seattle will still get something for him.

    Insert your own joke here…

  116. metz123 on July 26th, 2006 11:58 am

Doyle has been playing CF a lot in Tacoma. WHile he’s hitting .247 there his OBP is .356, What he’s not doing is hitting for power.

I’m glad to see him get called up. I’ll be pretty frustrated if I see Hargrove start Dobbs over Doyle on any sort of regular basis.

  117. PFK on July 26th, 2006 11:59 am

Everett’s made this decision surprisingly easy by his abysmal performance of late, so like a lot of folks, I’ve been convince this was going to happen, because it was so obviously a problem no one could continue to ignore it….but what’s curious to me is Doyle’s elevation at this time given his own recent lackluster performance. Do we have any info on his un-Doyle-like .243 average down in Tacoma? Looking at stats, you would have thought Choo would be a more logical choice at this time….they both hit from the left side, and neither is a fit to play CF, so they’d seem like interchangeable pieces. Choo is hitting for better average and for more power. What am I missing? Yes, Choo already had his cup of coffee at the Show this year, but we really haven’t seen evidence that Doyle brought his stroke back with him. Is he making good contact but hitting the ball at people. Or do front office prognosticators believe that a change of scenery will ignite his competitive fires? I guess the folks in Tacoma must believe he’s at full health, but he has had over 200 plate appearances, so the sample size is not tiny. Any wisdom from Cheney would be appreciated.

  118. Dave on July 26th, 2006 12:00 pm

Doyle hit the crap out of the ball in June and the start of July – his overall numbers have been pulled down by a recent 3 for 36 slump.

But he’ll be fine. If there’s one thing no one should worry about when it comes to Chris Snelling, it’s whether he’ll hit or not.

  119. zzyzx on July 26th, 2006 12:00 pm

Dave or DMZ or Somebody Smarter Than Me,

What do you think the odds are that the M’s acquire some sort of Veteran Utility Outfielder to play center, assuming we are still in the race a week from now?

And, considering how Hargrove uses his reserves, would acquiring Dellucci be redundant now that they have Doyle? Or could Dellucci pull double duty? how much of a disaster would he be in center? I know he has experience there.

  123. TheEmrys on July 26th, 2006 12:02 pm

    /frickin block quote

Raul would play center only if Everett broke into the clubhouse with guns blazing and mowed down Jones, WFB, Ichiro, and Snelling respectively while looking for Bavasi.

    /end frickin block quote

Do you really think that C-Rex would be able to hit anything? Come now. Everyone is safe, from gun or axe.

  124. eponymous coward on July 26th, 2006 12:02 pm

    So, let’s see:

Hyped free agent signings Bavasi’s made as a GM that have been DFA busts:

    Rich Aurilia
    Scott Spiezio
    Carl Everett

That’s something like 20 million in busts, that the Mariners have gone on to PAY someone else to play. (This also doesn’t include Boone, Cirillo, Reese, Guardado, Olerud.)

Hmm, if you’re wondering why Bavasi might get 86′ed after this year, this could easily be part of it.

  129. eponymous coward on July 26th, 2006 12:05 pm

Snelling still needs somewhat regular days off, and really, there’s nothing wrong with having him coming off the bench a couple times a week if you have another solid hitter to keep him fresh.

Send Dobbs down and bring up Petagine.

Of course, Hargrove’s brain isn’t going to be able to handle not putting the same lineup out every day, send Hargrove down and bring Rohn up, too. :D

  130. Rain Delay on July 26th, 2006 12:06 pm

#60 FWIW, Drayer said last week that Everett had not been a disruption, nor had he pitched a fit about playing time. The much-reported ‘heard from outside the office’ report of a blow-up in Hargrove’s office was said to be about another matter all-together.
Greg Johns in the King County Journal:

Hargrove brushed aside Tuesday’s blowup by Everett in his office, but as one who heard part of the player’s rantings while standing in the adjacent clubhouse, I have a hard time thinking this is the sort of leadership the M’s were looking for from the veteran designated hitter.

Everett wasn’t firing up his team or holding teammates accountable. He was merely sounding off in very loud and selfish fashion about his ownrole. He was challenging his boss in such combative manner that the man would have been fired if he was in any business other than professional sports.>

Since Greg Johns isn’t a paid team shill (as are the KOMO and FSN cres), I’ll go with Greg’s firsthand report.

  132. eponymous coward on July 26th, 2006 12:08 pm

“Our primary focus is to win games right now,” Bavasi said. “We are a better team today with Eddie Perez, Greg Dobbs and Chris getting more at-bats in the DH spot. In addition, today’s move does not preclude us from continuing to look for more offense in the trade market.”

Am I right in thinking Petagine is much better against RHP than LHP? I can’t for the life of me find any spilts for the Japanese leagues, but I think someone here said he was pretty platoonable. Are they likely to recall him now to play DH against right-handers when Doyle needs a rest, or have they pretty much given up on him?

Yeah, Dave, I know, but Roberto Petagine is better than Greg Dobbs, if you want to hand out DH at bats to anyone, and Dobbs is pretty terrible.

Oh well, I should be happy about the two leaps forward (no Everett, plus Doyle) as opposed to the one half-step back (Dobbs instead of Petagine on the roster).

#131– FWIW, the Drayer comment came in the middle of a discussion about Carl’s poor hitting, and was specifically in response to a caller mentioning Everett’s whining. She was talking about his longterm clubhouse behavior as someone who travels with the team — I have to admit that I am not a Greg Johns (occasional baseball columnist) fan anyway .. (a fine recent quote: “We won’t even get into the Freddy Garcia trade that netted only Jeremy Reed, now mired on the bench. Or the decision to give up on Miguel Olivo so soon. Or deal Randy Winn for negligible return to date.”)

    Uh, you’re kidding, right?

Lifetime minor league stats before 2005:

    Dobbs: .305/.357/.458
    Doyle: .327/.398/.496

Translating stats from Tacoma this year and projecting based on those is a classic case of Small Sample Size Theatre.

Dobbs is also OLDER than Doyle (by four years), and has reached the standard age where baseball playters peak (28). Doyle hasn’t.

Simply put, Dobbs is a marginal hitter- he’s a .270/.320/.380 hitter in the majors, maybe. Doyle, well, isn’t.

154 – Spencer B… mind telling me why you make assumptions as to why I couldn’t root for the M’s?

Seems a pretty large and presumptious leap, don’t it?

Since I’m in such a good mood from this news, I’ll explain…

If you read game threads recently, you would know that I felt very torn between the instant gratification of a win and the long term gratification of a better team with more wins.

Lately I haven’t felt torn, I felt that every win pushed back the demand for much needed change, losing Carl being the MOST needed change.

So how can I root for my team to win a game here or there if it meant losing more the rest of the year, or, god forbid, his option vesting and losing more next year, too?

So, because of Carl and other factors, I did not want the team to win and reinforce behavior and choices that would cripple the team for the future.

Does that mean I didn’t enjoy any wins? No. But now I feel free to root for them to win, because a big downside to victories just got eliminated. Not all of them, but the biggest one.

Losses have helped this team get better. The aggressive baserunning nonsense has been cut in half, at least. That makes us better. Carl is gone, that makes us better. Eddie is gone, that makes us better.

  195. USS Canada on July 26th, 2006 1:06 pm

    Must be for Walker

  196. arbeck on July 26th, 2006 1:06 pm

I don’t see how Abreu makes sense. If you get him either Doyle sits on the bench or Ibanez has to move to first. Maybe if it was a three team deal with Sexson leaving.

  197. USS Canada on July 26th, 2006 1:06 pm

    Choo for Walker???

  198. Bender on July 26th, 2006 1:07 pm

Please don’t get my hopes up. I’m already jubilant about the Doyle thing and I’m in a fragile state. If they do something retarded I’ll go into an apoplectic fit.

  199. Rain Delay on July 26th, 2006 1:07 pm

Hey Dave any rumblings about Jeff Conine. The Balitmore Sun was saying that the M’s and Braves were intersted in Jeff Conine? Supposedly they were looking for a mid-level prospect for him.

  200. AK4Sea on July 26th, 2006 1:08 pm

I don’t know why I bother having other websites bookmarked… when it comes to my Mariner news, this is the only damn site worth visiting.

    Bye, Choo. Best of luck.

(Dave breaks the news so hard it can’t be fixed.)

  201. Dave on July 26th, 2006 1:08 pm

The M’s aren’t interested in Conine. They want a left-handed bat.

  202. Dave in Palo Alto on July 26th, 2006 1:08 pm

    Carl Everett goodbye
Please do not bump your ass on
    The door going out

Offensive Substitution: Pinch hitter Jeff Clement replaces Shin-Soo Choo

That’s a bizarre switch, but looking at the box score I guess Clement stayed in to catch and Johnson moved out for another adventure in the outfield.

  204. msb on July 26th, 2006 1:10 pm

#192– well, just this morning Bavasi said they were more in the market for 2nd-tier guys where they wouldn’t have to move one of their top prospects…

  205. Rain Delay on July 26th, 2006 1:12 pm

Dave, thanks that’s what I wanted to know. Though if the M’s are out, the Braves could use him. They’d upgrade Left Field doing so, I just dont’ want it to cost Betemit to do so.

  206. IdahoFan on July 26th, 2006 1:12 pm

Is Bill Bavasi’s naming of Doyle, Dobbs, and Perez a way of communicating with Hargrove? Is he expressing his desires for who plays DH?

  207. gwangung on July 26th, 2006 1:14 pm

Choo for Walker? Choo for ????

    If it’s JUST Choo, I think I’ll be happy….

(Abreu? Um, sorry, but I’m wide awake…..)

  208. Mouse in a Bottle on July 26th, 2006 1:14 pm

I think if Bavasi wanted to communicate with Hargrove, he would just talk to him–don’t you?

  209. Grizz on July 26th, 2006 1:14 pm

Dave, can you at least assure us that the first line of the press release is not “Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the club has traded outfielder Chris Snelling . . . .”?

Choo for Dellucci would make sense, as Choo is roughly a younger, cheaper, less polished version of Dellucci.

  210. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on July 26th, 2006 1:14 pm

Oh Dave, just hypothetically, if the M’s were to try to trade a guy named Choo for a guy named Walker in some sort of deal . .what do you think of a move like that? Just hypothetically?

  211. eponymous coward on July 26th, 2006 1:15 pm

The other thing is I’d be looking to supplement the pitching staff right now, what with Soriano having issues, as opposed to picking up Todd Walker- unless Raul’s shoulder is more problematic than it seems. Especially since Todd Walker isn’t really an improvement on Doyle, unless you want to play him at 2B.

  212. USS Canada on July 26th, 2006 1:17 pm

#206 – I dont think so. I think hes just trying to state to the fans and media that Everett wasn’t that good.

Maybe if he allowed us to communicate with him before his bonehead signings of Everett and Washburn, he wouldnt have to make such overlays to the fans and media, because they wouldnt have been signed in the first palce.

  213. Dave on July 26th, 2006 1:18 pm

Dave, can you at least assure us that the first line of the press release is not “Seattle Mariners Executive Vice President & General Manager of Baseball Operations Bill Bavasi announced today that the club has traded outfielder Chris Snelling . . . .”?

    Snelling isn’t being traded.

Oh Dave, just hypothetically, if the M’s were to try to trade a guy named Choo for a guy named Walker in some sort of deal . .what do you think of a move like that? Just hypothetically?

Todd Walker is better than Greg Dobbs. He is decent insurance in case of an injury to an infielder. He would be a decent acquisition, but he shouldn’t cost us Shin-Soo Choo, or any other real prospect of note.

  214. gwangung on July 26th, 2006 1:18 pm

Especially since Todd Walker isn’t really an improvement on Doyle, unless you want to play him at 2B.

And take away playing time from Willie? Nahhhh….

  215. Dylan on July 26th, 2006 1:19 pm

Choo for Dellucci? Not likely, but our offense would look a lot better. Maybe we got A-rod back!! haha.

  216. Mike Snow on July 26th, 2006 1:20 pm

Question for Dave once the trade goes down. Since you had Choo and Cabrera pretty much neck-and-neck in trade value, are you more impressed with the return for Choo than what we got for Cabrera?

  217. Mouse in a Bottle on July 26th, 2006 1:20 pm

OK–got it. Not Choo for Walker.

  218. PositivePaul on July 26th, 2006 1:20 pm

Upon this great news, I just swapped out my desktop wallpaper.

Yeah, it’s in an R’s uniform, but this shot of Doyle works for me.

I got more Doyle pix, too, to choose from. Only a couple are meant for desktop wallpaper, but I’ve compressed these pix down a notch, and could make wallpaper if anyone’s interested.

Congrats Cult of Doyle! Throw back some Veggemite in celebration. Or some Aussie Shiraz, if that’s your preference (is mine)! Avoid Fosters at all costs.

This seriously catches me off guard. I’m okay by that, though!

  219. eponymous coward on July 26th, 2006 1:22 pm

The M’s aren’t interested in Conine. They want a left-handed bat.

I’m not getting this: they HAVE LH bats (Doyle, Petagine) who will cost them nothing in trade who would more than adequately replace the sucktastic ones they had before today(Everett, Dobbs).

Or is Hargrove’s tiny brain such that he refuses to belive minor league numbers or J League numbers mean anything, and he insists on “veterans” to replace C-Rex? I mean, really, Dellucci and Walker are decent players, but are they upgrades on what the M’s have for free? I don’t think so.

Whereas the team’s operating with a short bullpen (with Soriano having intermittent problems)- and is heavily using the ‘pen as well. I don’t get it.

  220. DMZ on July 26th, 2006 1:22 pm

Costco has Rosemont Estates Shiraz for a ridiculous $7.59 a bottle. That’s a crazy price for a really nice Australian shiraz.

  221. msb on July 26th, 2006 1:23 pm

dang, Derek, I almost snorted chocolate milk across my keyboard… fine photography there.

  222. Lauren, token chick on July 26th, 2006 1:25 pm

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should anyone attempt to untie the yellow ribbon around Doyle’s neck.

    That is all.

  223. gwangung on July 26th, 2006 1:27 pm

Or is Hargrove’s tiny brain such that he refuses to belive minor league numbers or J League numbers mean anything, and he insists on “veterans” to replace C-Rex?

I have no doubt that this is the case.

Talk about learning the wrong lesson from (his own) past…..

  224. PositivePaul on July 26th, 2006 1:28 pm

Mmm hmmm. Have to second that Rosemont Estates suggestion. Glad to hear we still have very similar tastes in alcohol, Herr Zumsteg!

  225. eponymous coward on July 26th, 2006 1:31 pm

    Case in point:

    http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/teamReport?categoryId=71598&type=InsideSlant

The Mariners are not sure how much longer they can go not knowing when Rafael Soriano will be able to pitch again.
Tuesday was the fifth consecutive game on the Seattle homestand in which Soriano could not be used. He’s suffering from some form of tired shoulder, and he hasn’t pitched in a game since July 19 in Yankee Stadium.
The Mariners had hoped Sunday that Soriano would be ready for the Blue Jays on Monday or Tuesday, but he wasn’t ready to go either day.

If things don’t change, the Mariners may have no choice but to put him on the disabled list. He missed five games in late June 29 and early July with similar problems, and extended rest may be the only answer.

Yeah, extended rest. That works. Except not so much.

  226. Steve T on July 26th, 2006 1:38 pm

Strewth! Good on ya, mate. Crikey, that’s bonzer news. I’m throwin’ a wobbly here. Everett never stood a Buckley’s with us; his bat carked it long ago. Bavasi really came a gutser with that move, but this one’s a corker. Doyle’s fair dinkum, only a right drongo thinks otherwise. This season’s a bit of a no-hoper, but she’ll be apples from now on. No drama!

  227. dw on July 26th, 2006 1:40 pm

Yeah, extended rest. That works. Except not so much.

I just wish they’d hurry up and put Soriano on the DL, because he’s a waste of space on my roto league roster if he’s not playing.

  228. JI on July 26th, 2006 1:42 pm

    DMZ that’s hilarious!

It makes me remeber how much I wish I had a camera when I passed by that very murial. I mean– it actually says “Carl”(!) too perfect!

Oh well, I settled for being photographed in front of his jersey in the team store. $220 price tag, I wonder how many of those they sold.

Losing Carl is like making a deadline blockbuster, this division looks more and more winnable each day.

  229. G-Man on July 26th, 2006 1:44 pm

220, 224 off topic. Are you going to delete your own post, DMZ? :)

Seriously, I have sampled that very item, and I agree with the review and the recommendation. Anyone had a good chard recently?

  230. Deanna on July 26th, 2006 1:44 pm

There were several Snelling jerseys available in the team store a few weeks back — from the “game-used” or the “used in commercial” racks, I forget which. They were like $350 or so, though.
