Game 103, Mariners at Indians
Only the daring life is worth living, so here’s a game thread on the new box.
LHP Jarrod Washburn vs RHP Jake Westbrook.
4:05. KSTW-11 for your local TV needs.
Division race news: Angels lost to Boston. Oakland’s beating Toronto, and Texas gets the night off, facing Kansas City.
Your lineup tonight:
RF-L Ichiro!
2B-R Lopez
3B-R Beltre
LF-L Ibanez
1B-R Sexson
DH-L Broussard, in his M’s debut
C-R Johjima
SS-R Betancourt
CF-R Willy “The Ignitor” Bloomquist
Whatareyougonnado.
So then the bench is OF-R Jones, C-R Rivera, 1B-R Perez, 1B/3B-L Dobbs. Bloomquist has to move in to cover a middle infield need, and then Jones would have to play an outfield position.
Cleveland, meanwhile, is interesting
CF-L Sizemore
LF-R Michaels
DH-L Hafner
1B-S Martinez
RF-R Blake
2B-R Belliard
SS-R Peralta
3B-R Marte
C-R Stoppach
Both catchers on the field. I wonder who their emergency catcher would be?

DMZ, I thought Broussard was under contract for another two years.
Yeah, I wrote that too fast. I shouldn’t have said “free agent” instead of “the M’s don’t have to keep him”.
No, Broussard signed a 1y deal for this season to avoid arbitration.
[HOW MANY GODDAMN TIMES DO WE HAVE TO DELETE LONG LINKS BEFORE PEOPLE STOP POSTING THEM ARRGHHH]
Broussard is arb-eligible for 2007 and 2008, unless the M’s and he agree to a contract.
Lowe is a beast.
When Mark Lowe sends in his taxes, he sends blank forms and includes only a picture of himself, ready to go into his windup. Mark Lowe has not had to pay taxes, ever.
Is there a better bullpen foursome in the league than Putz, Soriano, Sherrill and Lowe? And for $1.5 Million?
I like Mark Lowe. He’s Jonathan Papelbon without the ass Red Sox fans.
On the third day, USSM rose again from the dead, in fulfillment of, um, Internet protocols.
Forget AAA, let’s just start promoting players straight from AA.
BIG BEN!
Nice! 😀
An eye for an eye choo. Nice Brou.
SWEEEEET
Broussard strikes back!
F you, Choo!
#105: thats exactly what I thought as well
#104: what I do I do out of love
Did they get Betancourt? NO!
I personally think Ben’s homer was more impresseive than Choo’s….
somebody better chew yuni out for that one…jogging back to first.
He was safe. Look at the replay.
On the one hand, the endless Colavito knobslobbering is getting old.
On the other hand, I had some Colavito baseball cards growing up and used to have him as the DH in Earl Weaver Baseball.
Yuni was safe, but hopefully it serves as a learned lesson.
note to Rick Rizzs: you CANNOT get to nickname anyone!!! Do you hear me? No one is ever going to call Lowe “EZ!”
I don’t like Rizzs’ nickname for Lowe. It reminds me of certain gangster rapper who was no role model.
How about that…a CF that can catch one at the wall. For OUR team. Nice. Good game.
“Oh, so you’re not exactly a role model?”
“Not exactly.”
#102: (or anyone) I’m confused a bit now…
Basically the Indians bought out Broussard’s 2006 arbitration eligibility with the one year contract.
However, if Broussard files for arbitration after this season, how can the Ms not bring him back procedurally?
Basically isn’t it lowball/highball and the judge awards the figure closest to what he thinks the player is worth?
Do you mean by *don’t have to bring him back* they can trade or DFA him (but they’d still be on the hook for him)?
Finally Washburn gets a win. Still isn’t worth anywhere near what he’s getting paid. I thought he was supposed to pitch so well at Safeco Field. He hasn’t been getting great run support, but still! Nowhere near last year’s season with the Angels. He should be ashamed of himself. We have to pay this schlub 10 mil a year for the next 3 seasons good gawd! His fastball barely reaches 90! Who were the contract wizards that came up with that one?
I would also like to add that Dave Niehaus is going senile and should be taken out of the booth after this season. If he refuses to go he should be put in a nursing home with the Mariner Moose and that idiot that is always stuttering and screwing up his lines during the FSN pre-game shows.
Why is,Betancourt, the only other player other than Ichiro that’s hitting over .300, hitting 8th in the lineup? I’ve looked all over the A.L and no one’s #8 is hitting anywhere near .300 except Aaron Hill on the jays and damn near everyone on that team is hitting above .300. I’ve discussed this many times with coworkers as everyday we see our 2nd best hitter languish in the 8 spot, to no avail.
Jimbo: I find Dave to be a comfort in the booth, like my flannel pj’s and a cup of cocoa w/the little bitty marshmallows.
I don’t care that he makes mistakes–it’s sort of sweet, like Aunt Bea.
He can be forgiven about anything because he has made listening to the M’s game worth my time when the team on the field couldn’t. And he certainly doesn’t drag up the same three cliched stats (score 4 runs, keep the ball down, don’t make mistakes) every inning and a half, like the other idiots up there.

The M’s can non-tender him in December and they won’t be on the hook for any salary in 2007. If they tender him a contract, he’s considered a signed player and he either goes to arbitration in Feb. or makes a deal with the club.
Why is Lowe only a 6 on the future 40? What was the knock on him?
Because he came out of nowhere. Baseball America didn’t even have him among the M’s Top 30 prospects before the season started. Last year, he was a guy with a 94 MPH fastball, no command, and not much else.
Now? He’s freaking awesome, and it happened very, very quickly. When I update the Future Forty next week, you can guarantee his “reward” rating will not be a six.
The M’s aren’t going to non-tender Broussard. The fact that they had him through 2008 was one of the big reasons they made the deal. He’s not going anywhere.
Re: Rizzs’ slobber kiss of Boomquist for a groundout RBI in the 3B, it was sickening. But the announcers are _team_ employees, and they know well enough and how to keep on the good side of ownership’s pet players. I don’t respect this, but it’s the American way.
I love Betancourt’s package. I’m very hopeful he’ll yet tighten up some of the holes in his game because ‘wholes’ give you a few more w’s to play with. Again, YuBet’s only had a year and a half in pro ball, and he’s fielding like this and making .300 contact at the ML level. He’s a stud. It would give the announcers a lexicographical hernia if the Ms were to sign Y. Gouriel, too, but I think somebody in NY is going to drop some major wallet-weight on that guy trying to imitate the Mariners’ success here. So.
I’m interested to know what Broussard hit in Safeco and how his swing tailors to the park. Anyone have background on that?? I think he’s a good, cheap pick-up who can provide some real flexiblity and punch.

Wont it be kind of a moot point? I mean, with the way Lowe’s pitching and the rate he’s going he should wrack up 50+ IP this season and lose his rookie status. Wouldn’t he be considered “graduated” and just be left at that?
In any event, Lowe has entered into “stud” territory pretty quickly. I wish we had more “thunder out of the blue” people like him each year. You just never know when the lightswitch is going to suddenly come on.

You did notice that Felix, Reed, Lopez, Betancourt, Sherrill, and Jones are still on the Future Forty, right? I don’t throw guys off the list when they get to an arbitrary number of at-bats or innings and become non-rookies.
Yeah, I noticed that you keep those guys on, Dave, and it’s a good approach. One can see the system’s graduation rate and quality rather better keeping those guys in the picture in the ‘straddle years,’ they’re first two seasons of more or less full time play in the Bigs.
doing a quick re-cap of the thread, I trust that now the site is back up, that the same rules apply about off-limit subjects…
I think it is important to keep guys like on their, because for the reason of doing a ‘future’ forty, they certainly represent the ‘future’.
If you suddenly eliminate those guys the ‘future’ would look kind of bleak. Which is why I like that Dave has them in a seperate category but there nonetheless.
Very impressed by the club tonight. Our bullpen is nothing short of outstanding. The emergence of Lowe certainly makes the loss of Soriano ALOT easier to swallow. Heres hoping that Joel can put together a solid outing today!!
#136: right, I guess I don’t understand the assertion that its not likely Broussard will be around next season
He’s flawed but also potentially useful.

The major difference being that those that you listed as graduated haven’t had their risk / reward changed either. At least not that I’ve noticed. This would be the first “graduated” player that would have his risk / reward modified. It’s just unprecedented.
137 – I love Betancourt’s package.
Too much information.
