Game 111, Devil Rays at Mariners

DMZ · August 7, 2006 at 6:29 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

There’s only one way the team can compete now. They must win and win and win. They must put together a long stretch of sustained success against every team they face, taking game and then series off divisional rivals and also-rans alike.

7:05, RHP Tim Corcoran versus LHP Jamie Moyer.

    I’m thinking 38-14 gets it done….

  2. The Unknown Comic on August 7th, 2006 6:37 pm

To watch or not to watch: that is the question:

I think I will mow the lawn and then later listen to the coughs, sighs and throat clearings of Mike Hargrove in the post game press conference on FSN Live.

  3. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 6:38 pm

I have to admit I will not be watching, as I have a ridiculous amount of book work to do and little remaining time to do it.

  4. Brian Thornton on August 7th, 2006 6:49 pm

I have to admit I will be watching because I have a ridiculous amount of work on one of my book contracts and I like to have the game on while I’m working on them. They’re childrens’ books, and this is contract work, so it can feel as much like drudgery as watching the Ms line-up step into the batter’s box against Barry Zito.

  5. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 6:53 pm

Yeah, I’m going to break down, I think — I have a hard time resisting watching a pitcher for the first time and I haven’t see Corcoran yet.

Which reminds me – if you have a similar curiousity, don’t buy MLB Extra Innings, it’ll ruin your life. Of course, you get to see every pitcher.

  6. robbbbbb on August 7th, 2006 6:55 pm

I remember Joe Sheehan, a couple years ago, referred to MLB Extra Innings as, “Heroin for baseball fans.”

  7. The Unknown Comic on August 7th, 2006 6:57 pm

The thing that has ruined my life is MVP Baseball 2005 and MVP06 NCAA Baseball for the Xbox.

What’s up guys? Long time. In case you hadn’t noticed, Upton is up again and playing 3B. If you want to discuss the game with Rays fans, you are more than welcome to come visit us at raysbaseball.com.

Good attitude, DMZ! I like your attitude… now we just need Dave to feel the mojo and we’ll be set.

    IGNITOR!!!

Rewarded for his game-winning 9th inning hit yesterday

  11. David J. Corcoran I on August 7th, 2006 7:07 pm

9th inning hit? did I miss something?

  12. Brian Thornton on August 7th, 2006 7:09 pm

Mike Hargrove needs to be fired if for no other reason than his obsession with starting Bloomquist in the outfield.

Anyone know whether someone like Dan Rohn would be any different though? Also, at what point does Bloomquist’s union-mandated year set of raises begin to make him too expensive for the role the Ms see him filling?

  13. NBarnes on August 7th, 2006 7:09 pm

No more so than the Ignitor did.

  14. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:11 pm

Corco, stop blogging from the clubhouse, you’ve got to pitch if the M’s ever get two…

    oh.

  15. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:11 pm

Bloomquist is on a two-year contract, remember, he’s not headed to arbitration again.

  16. Mr. Egaas on August 7th, 2006 7:11 pm

The Ignitor gets us going, doesn’t finish us off.

Well, he did finish us off.

    My Ignitor is defective.

Note: I’m not related to Tim, as far as I know.

Crawford, triples master in triples ballpark.

  19. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:12 pm

It’s been funny, I keep running into Corcorans doing book research, but I’d never come across one before David J Corcoran the First wandered to USSM.

  20. LB on August 7th, 2006 7:16 pm

#15: If I count correctly using the data at http://mlbcontracts.blogspot.com, Willie won’t be a FA in the 2008 season. He’ll still have one more arb-eligible year after the current contract expires after 2007.

  21. Emerald on August 7th, 2006 7:18 pm

    Yay Ichiro!

  22. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:19 pm

I always love watching Ichiro tear after a ball when he’s not entirely sure if he’s going to get to it, before he throttles back so he can arrive there perfectly-timed. He covers so much ground at full speed it’s hard to believe.

  23. robbbbbb on August 7th, 2006 7:22 pm

I thought you were working on a book tonight, DMZ?

  24. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:22 pm

    I knew this would happen.

  25. Emerald on August 7th, 2006 7:23 pm

    BEELLLLLLLLLTREEEEEE…!

  26. robbbbbb on August 7th, 2006 7:23 pm

I do love to watch Beltre when he’s on. What are the chances he can keep this rolling into next year?

  27. killa3312_again on August 7th, 2006 7:23 pm

Corcoran sucks, giving up a HR to Bustre.

  28. Emerald on August 7th, 2006 7:23 pm

Good lord, Valle is just annoying

  29. John D. on August 7th, 2006 7:24 pm

JOE SHEEHAN – The thing I remember most about him is an observation he made some years ago. “Most GMs would rather pay a player to lose games for them than to stay at home, playing cards with his brother.”
    CARL EVERETT, anyone?

  30. Emerald on August 7th, 2006 7:26 pm

Richie smells blood…. Man with those legs he would be a great cyclist

  31. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:28 pm

“killa” – I know you’re not around here often enough to pick up on what is/isn’t cool, but we banned use of “Bustre” about a year ago. Please don’t get into namecalling.

  32. MedicineHat on August 7th, 2006 7:29 pm

Beltre last 21 games – Not including tonight’s game:

    87 AB’s, .287, 4 HR, 15 RBI, 9 RS

Not exactly super stud, but much closer to what we would hope to get for the money.

  33. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 7:29 pm

Bad call on Richie… I wish someone kept a state on blown call strikeouts.

  34. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 7:30 pm

Wow… uh, Gomes resembles Upton in that they’re both humans, but beyond that…

  35. Emerald on August 7th, 2006 7:32 pm

Pfff… in a few years Upton could be super-human…

  36. killa3312_again on August 7th, 2006 7:35 pm

Upton will be a star, and if the Rays have to move him to the outfield, then so be it. He sure can hit, though.

  37. Des71 on August 7th, 2006 7:36 pm

Charo…I suspect nightmares for many tonight.

  38. Emerald on August 7th, 2006 7:41 pm

  39. robbbbbb on August 7th, 2006 7:41 pm

Ooooohhhhh… That was close. I thnk the ump made the right call, but that was real close.

  40. Brian Thornton on August 7th, 2006 7:42 pm

This has to be a record year for getting run out of an inning for the Ms. I don’t think that even Melvin was this aggressive. Sheesh.

  41. Dave in Palo Alto on August 7th, 2006 7:42 pm

Rather have Willie just get out to start the next inning, eh?

  42. LB on August 7th, 2006 7:45 pm

#39: I’ve watched on HD TiVo a few times. When the ball beats the runner by that much, it doesn’t really matter how close the tag play is.

Someone needs to explain to Hargrove the importance of clearing the pitcher’s spot in the lineup. Betancourt should have been standing on the 1B bag with his hands on his hips waiting for the end of the inning.

And someone needs to explain to the hitters that the TB bullpen is their friend, and that it would help their cause to get a little deeper into counts.

  43. Dave in Palo Alto on August 7th, 2006 7:51 pm

Why is it that every run allowed is originally on two outs with noone on base?

  44. apunetid on August 7th, 2006 7:55 pm

Why can’t he do that when it counts?

  45. Dave in Palo Alto on August 7th, 2006 7:55 pm

    Five game hitting streak? Willie?

  46. Dave in Palo Alto on August 7th, 2006 7:57 pm

Whoa!! Those of us watching gameday just all had convulsions!

  47. LB on August 7th, 2006 7:57 pm

Nothing slows down a game like speed. Who said that first?

  48. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2006 7:58 pm

    1. I have got to stop seeing Willie in the line-up. I just HAVE to. It’s got to friggin’ stop. His hit just now is irrelevant to me.

    2. BELTRE! I’m gonna win my season totals bet on Beltre, I just know it.

    3. L.A. sports radio is as stupid as Seattle’s. I just listened to fifteen minutes of “Angel talk” in which I got to hear:

“Fire Mike S.! Get a home run manager!”

    “Fire Stoneman! He sucks!”

    And my favorite…

“I’ll tell you what this team has to do, it has to sit Vlad. He needs to be benched.”

  49. Typical Idiot Fan on August 7th, 2006 7:58 pm

    What.

  53. jefffrane on August 7th, 2006 8:05 pm

Richie didn’t wave at all those outside pitches. A nice change.

  54. Dave in Palo Alto on August 7th, 2006 8:05 pm

Broussard needs a granny now. Choo had one in cleveland. It’s only fair!

Just not hit hard enough, shame.

  57. apunetid on August 7th, 2006 8:09 pm

I see the Reds picked up Ryan Franklin. Cincinnati’s becoming the M’s castoff team.

  58. LB on August 7th, 2006 8:15 pm

#57: Nice line, too, for the kid from Spiro, Oklahoma, in his first appearance in a Reds uniform.

    4-1/3 IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 5K, 1HR.

The fans in Cincinnati are gonna love him.

  59. Dave in Palo Alto on August 7th, 2006 8:16 pm

    ugggh. 3-3. This team blows.

  60. argh on August 7th, 2006 8:18 pm

Maybe we should have had Franklin pitching tonight. That line’s looking pretty good about now.

  61. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 8:18 pm

Jesus, Moyer! The team is actually scoring runs for you and this is how you repay them?!?!

  62. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:18 pm

    59. Tonight, it is mostly Moyer who blows.

  63. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:19 pm

    Whew…’bout time

Maybe we can get them back against David’s “brother” in the bottom half

  64. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:24 pm

before the game, Blow reminded us that this isn’t that old D’rays team, that this team has been known to hit the baseball….

  65. Des71 on August 7th, 2006 8:24 pm

Why do people on this site continually break the third commandment?

  66. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 8:25 pm

“Thou shalt not post long links”?

  67. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:26 pm

“the right to bear arms”? no, wait….

  68. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:26 pm

    48. Center Field is our weak spot. To have a decent team, we need somebody good there.

  69. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:26 pm

I wish one of the commandments was Willie “resting” on ALL SEVEN days…sigh

  70. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:28 pm

#68– that’s some of that there ‘irony’, right?

  71. Des71 on August 7th, 2006 8:29 pm

You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.

  72. Jar on August 7th, 2006 8:30 pm

#65, are you sure they are using His name in vein, or where they just praying for Jamie to get out of the inning.

  73. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2006 8:30 pm

65 – “Why do people on this site continually break the third commandment?”

I also break some specific prohibitions of Islam… which is about as relevant to me as Christian rules. Which is to say, not relevant.

  74. pablothegreat on August 7th, 2006 8:30 pm

65: God damn it, I can’t find any examples of the third commandment being broken (except for 61).

  75. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:31 pm

86 pitches in 4 innings is very un-Moyer-like.

  76. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:31 pm

hey, has Ron mentioned his ’score 4-runs for Moyer’ theory yet?

  77. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:31 pm

Isn’t Norton an older & obviously BETTER version of Dobbs in almost every way (except Norton is a switch hitter)

  78. argh on August 7th, 2006 8:32 pm

    Mateo’s up. I think I’ll just throw-up now.

  79. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:32 pm

#75– unless he hasn’t quite got his feel, and especially when facing a bunch of young pups he doesn’t know well…

  80. Jerry Pezzino on August 7th, 2006 8:32 pm

Oh, good. Mateo will make everything better!*

    *worse

  81. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2006 8:33 pm

    Mateo! Of course!

I’ve never understood Christians’ fascination with other people following rules intended for them. It’s Corco being offended because I stay out after his curfew.

  82. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:34 pm

Jamie just doesn’t have it, yet I’d be wrong not to point out that the last pitch really seemed like a strike

  83. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:34 pm

…just doesn’t have it TONIGHT that is

  84. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:34 pm

oh, great — Mateo and men on base.

  85. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:35 pm

Julio, Gas Can, Mateo, ladies and gentlemen. The Devil Rays need a confidence-building 3-run homer.

  86. pablothegreat on August 7th, 2006 8:35 pm

81: It’s no different from Muslims getting pissed and rioting when the Dutch put a cartoon of Mohammed in a newspaper. I don’t think that it’s strictly a Christian fascination.

  87. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:35 pm

Julio gives dependability and consistency a REALLY bad name, doesn’t he?

  88. Jar on August 7th, 2006 8:36 pm

John in LA, it’s something you COULD do out of general respect for other people’s beliefs, it is obviously bothering at least one person, and it doesn’t exactly add to your online communication abilities, but it’s up to you really.

  89. apunetid on August 7th, 2006 8:36 pm

I think comment 61 was merely pointing out that Moyer wasn’t being very Jesus-like when he was repaying evil (our offense on most occasions) with evil (tonights pitching performance), which is discouraged in Romans 12:17.

  90. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:36 pm

maybe Mateo can find his magical arm slot again tonight.

  91. argh on August 7th, 2006 8:37 pm

One of the reasons I like sports is that can involve deep and abiding faith without any concomittant urge to convert the guy on the next bar stool to your way of thinking.

  92. Jar on August 7th, 2006 8:37 pm

    89, haha!

  93. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:39 pm

Mateo! Thanks for proving me wrong.

  94. argh on August 7th, 2006 8:39 pm

    It’s the Miracle of Mateo.

  95. apunetid on August 7th, 2006 8:39 pm

Just another great outing from Mateo! What else would you expect?

  96. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 8:40 pm

Also, since even different religions break the commandments up differently, citing “#3″ as having a particular meaning requires you to agree that that religion’s interpretation is the right one, which is bad news.

Plus, I think “thou shalt not post long links” is more appropriate here

  97. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:40 pm

    88

True, it should be each individual’s choice. But I think if someone doesn’t want “God” involved in baseball, then not saying His name in vain is always a good start.

    Just a thought I guess.

  98. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:40 pm

a pleasant surprise. Does that mean he gives it up next inning with his runners on base?

  99. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2006 8:40 pm

86 – I would say those two things are extremely different. Closer to the outrage over Pis- I’ll just say Mapplethorpe.

88 – Why should anyone be offended if I don’t follow their rules? It would be like a Muslim upset that DMZ was talking about beer. Or a Mormon upset that Seattle is sponsered by Starbucks.

It’s not being offensive, it’s just not following a rule not intended for me.

  100. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:42 pm

ok, now I think Ichiro! is in a mini-slumpette…

  101. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 8:43 pm

Well, the argument would be all those rules would be intended for you, whether or not you’re a believer. But really, now, this is distracting from the fact that Hargrove *again* went to Mateo in close game which is a crazy risk to take.

  102. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:43 pm

Lately I’ve heard some people would like to see Lowe start. But if that were to happen, wouldn’t two things sorta risky occur?

-Lowe couldn’t possibly be as good as a starter, nor could his relief replacement be nearly as great at stranding runners

-Wouldn’t Mateo get possibly MORE appearances in even MORE CRUCIAL spots?

  103. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:45 pm

I’m still waiting to hear why Fontaine thinks Lowe isn’t a starter.

so, the D’rays not so much of a draw as the A’s, huh?

  104. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:46 pm

    99

That’s only along the same level of offensiveness if the Muslim worshipped the beer or the Mormon worshipped the coffee. Because hypothetically, the example cited someone saying “God” or “Jesus” in vain, not an “immoral” beverage.

  105. Jar on August 7th, 2006 8:46 pm

99, it is not about the “rule”. It’s about respecting someone’s beliefs. It would be more along the lines of a Jewish racial slur or something slanderous said about Mohammad. But again, take it as you will, just trying to clarify why it would be ofensive to someone.

  106. John in L.A. on August 7th, 2006 8:47 pm

    101 – Ok, I’m back to Hargrove.

BTW, DMZ, I owe you an email. I followed up on what we were talking about. I’ll get that off to soon.

  111. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:48 pm

    thatsababy.

  112. DKCecil on August 7th, 2006 8:49 pm

    Well, Richie’s pissed.

  113. Mr. Egaas on August 7th, 2006 8:49 pm

I’m fine with leaving Lowe as a reliever. He’s had great luck there and I don’t want a kid coming up from AA straight to the bigs having to face hitters 3 times in a game.

Also lets us use the notion of potentially stretching Soriano out next spring and trying him as a starter, but his shoulder issues worry me.

With Lowe doing well in the pen, it’s just less a chance of Mateo being used in situations where I don’t want Mateo used or him sticking around for much futher.

Either way, yay for kids who come up and have great successes from the pen. I love our cheap, young, flamethrowing pen. (Putz, Soriano, Lowe, Sherill). Everybody else can rot out there for all I care.

  114. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:49 pm

    FRIGHTENING THOUGHT ALERT!

Ugh…(I can barely even type this)

    I just agreed with Valle.

He said everytime the M’s need a big hit, Raul seems to come through. Makes me want to re-evaluate my whole outlook on life!

  115. msb on August 7th, 2006 8:49 pm

you know, looking back, Julio is pretty good at vulturing wins…

  116. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:50 pm

Raul has had an incredible year. If we had a center fielder that could hit as well as he has hit, we would have a chance.

  117. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:50 pm

    113

    VERY well said

  118. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 8:51 pm

Has anyone else realized that Julio tends to screw the pooch A LOT more in his second inning of work lately?

  119. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 8:51 pm

I don’t know if you’re aware of this, but a high percentage of Raul’s home runs tie the game or give the Mariners a lead.

  120. pablothegreat on August 7th, 2006 8:51 pm

99: I’m not so sure that those situations are so different. If you’ll recall, many Muslims got mad because a Dutch newspaper published a cartoon of the Muslim prophet, which is against the Muslim faith.

Jar got mad at post 61 because he used the word “Jesus” in vain, which is against the Christian faith.

Am I simplifying the situations a bit? Absolutely. My point is that people tend to expect people to follow their religious beliefs, whether they be Christian, Muslim, Atheist, etc.

    Also, Rauuuuuuuul!

  121. Jar on August 7th, 2006 8:51 pm

    nice!

  122. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:51 pm

We should have Sherrill in here.

  123. argh on August 7th, 2006 8:53 pm

Whichever inning it is, that poor dog has got to be a nervous wreck by now.

  124. AK4Sea on August 7th, 2006 8:53 pm

Let’s put Julio Mateo in CF and have Willie Boom Boom pitch.

I honestly, honestly, honestly don’t think it would be that much worse.

  125. pablothegreat on August 7th, 2006 8:54 pm

If the Mariners lose the game I will be forced to sacrifice a manatee.

  126. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:55 pm

There is no point leaving Mateo in here when we could have Sherrill, Lowe, Soriano, and Putz for the rest of the game.

  127. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 8:56 pm

    I’m scared… hold me

  128. AK4Sea on August 7th, 2006 8:56 pm

    MATEO!

  131. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 8:57 pm

It looks like Mateo is back to the normal arm angle.

  132. pablothegreat on August 7th, 2006 8:57 pm

Ok Dudley, time to pull Mateo.

  133. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 8:57 pm

    That’s just Julio being Julio.

  134. argh on August 7th, 2006 8:58 pm

You don’t want to completely shoot your bullpen wad — isn’t Pineiro due up again sometime this week? And then we have to consider the last 4 innings of Washburn’s next game and there’s the possibility Felix may need a hand….

Meanwhile, the pooch is yelping piteously as Mateo administers his 2nd inning goodies. Will no one take pity on that poor beast?

  135. AK4Sea on August 7th, 2006 8:58 pm

Aw, pablo, you ruined a very timely Jim Gaffigan reference, which officially bums me out more than Mateo. :(

I do see what you’re trying to say and I agree that it can be wrong for one group to impose their will on everyone else.

I was just specifically referring to someone saying the name of someone’s God, not the issue of having to follow someone else’s relgious rules in general.

The reason I think the best thing overall is to NOT BRING UP the person’s God in the first place, is that way religion isn’t brought into things ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

For instance, if I don’t want Islam discussed in a baseball forum, then I know its best for me to not start using “Allah” inappropriately in front of a muslim. Because it would be ME bringing up religion.

One of the really golden aspects of Grover’s ultimate demise will be that I won’t have to watch the lout pick his ears and his g–d— (how’s that for sensitive) nose anymore.

  140. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:04 pm

Texas has gotten one back and now only trails the dastardly A’s 6-4. It pains me to note that a fellow TVCC alum, Rick Bauer gave up the last two runs for Texas

    :-(

  141. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 9:05 pm

In 13 games of A ball, Mark Lowe pitched 29 and a third innings. He started one game. At double A, he appeared in 11 games, pitched 16 and two thirds innings, and started no games. This leads me to believe that his future is as a reliever, not a starter.

  142. apunetid on August 7th, 2006 9:05 pm

Well, I’d have to say that JeffS had the conversation-provoking comment of the year back at 61.

In other news, nice work, Sherrill.

  146. Rain Delay on August 7th, 2006 9:10 pm

Hmm. I’m wondering with the way Grover likes to use Mateo..the BP coach can pull a “Dave’s not here” with Grover when he calls down for Mateo to warm up.

    “Julio’s not here maaannn..”

    “Get him up!”

    “Get who up?”

    “Mateo!”

    “Julio’s not here maaaannn”

  147. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 9:10 pm

Mark Ellis with 4 RBI? Are you kidding me? It’s seem they have a different hero every game.

    Willie Bloomquist, Starting Centerfielder.

    Read it and weep.

  167. hub on August 7th, 2006 9:27 pm

I moved to Orlando last month and got MLB Extra Innings to keep up with the M’s. Of course, the games against the D-Rays are blacked out. Sadly, they are not on any local cable stations. In fact, not ONE Florida team has been on local TV since I came here. Every single game is blacked out here. And they wonder why there’s so little fan interest.

  168. JI on August 7th, 2006 9:27 pm

He throws hard, Idaho. Or at least he used to.

  169. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 9:27 pm

Since Hargrove was known as “The Human Rain Delay” as a player, might all this aggressive swinging and baserunning be coming from Bavasi?

  170. adamt on August 7th, 2006 9:28 pm

Soriano pitch velocity to K BJ Upton:

    77
    90

Wish I could be hurting and throw in the 90s… but, that’s not a good sign for him.

  171. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 9:30 pm

166 — as much as it hurts for me to say it, but I would rather see Jones learning effectively in AAA… even if it means a large dose of WFB in CF. Although I would be thrilled if we just threw Snelling out there and let him handle the majority of the playing time.

  172. DKCecil on August 7th, 2006 9:32 pm

Jeff, I don’t think you’d want to “throw” Snelling out there. It’s like playing dishwasher frisbee with fine china.

  184. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 9:38 pm

172 — Sadly, if Snelling doesn’t play CF he won’t play. I think it’s a risk worth taking. If we baby him he will sit on the bench and won’t be a factor. Throw him in CF and hope he survives. Is there any other option to get him in the lineup?

  185. Rick L on August 7th, 2006 9:38 pm

    178. Tonight he was 0 for 5, dropping his average to .218.

  186. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:40 pm

Can you really call getting the go ahead run into second base in the 8th inning “indifference?”

Trade Richie, put Perez/Broussard at 1B and DH Snelling?

Talking about next year, of course.

There’s also the chance that Raul will completely drop off the table, and Snelling could play in left.

I really, really don’t want to see him in CF. For his sake and for the team’s.

  188. Livengood on August 7th, 2006 9:41 pm

The Slump is what is keeping Doyle in Tacoma now….

  189. Rockymariner on August 7th, 2006 9:41 pm

    Holy good pen use?
    JJ in the 8th!

  190. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:41 pm

    .218?

I think Snelling needs to make sure he has his stroke in Tacoma, before we proclaim him the answer to ANYTHING here imho.

Especially in light of the fact that his forte is supposed to be hitting for a high average, isn’t it?

  191. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 9:43 pm

Richie isn’t going anywhere… he’s a hometown guy and he’s one of our only sources for power. Raul will be in LF all year next year even if he is having an Krazy Karl type of season. It’s CF or bust for our boy Snelling.

  192. DKCecil on August 7th, 2006 9:43 pm

JJ, you are a godly manly men amongst men.

  193. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 9:45 pm

FYI, Oakland won. The only team we can make ground on is Texas.

  194. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 9:45 pm

Snelling doesn’t have the speed to play center field any more. It’s not an option. I don’t know why you think it is, but thinking it won’t make it true.

  195. Josh on August 7th, 2006 9:46 pm

Yeah, he had a tough angle. It was questionable whether he would have had enough on the throw to get Raul out at first. Uh huh.

  196. JI on August 7th, 2006 9:46 pm

Man how would you like to be that kid?

You catch a homerun ball and you have to talk to Matt Morrison? Talk about karmic retribution…

  198. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:47 pm

Granted, hitting into a dp on a 3-0 count is actually worse

  199. argh on August 7th, 2006 9:47 pm

Clearly the green light on 3-0 isn’t the answer to Richie’s plate problems.

  200. DKCecil on August 7th, 2006 9:48 pm

Clearly, letting him swing period isn’t the answer.

  201. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:49 pm

  202. Josh on August 7th, 2006 9:49 pm

I’m surprised Rizzs didn’t say something about how much Lee loves to hit in Seattle.

  203. JeffS on August 7th, 2006 9:50 pm

DMZ — would you rather see a mix of Jones and WFB for the rest of the year? Snelling is the only other possibility. I know Snelling wouldn’t be a good fit in center, but it’s the best option we have for now. It gets Jones back where he belongs and it gets Snelling MLB at-bats.

  204. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:52 pm

  205. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:53 pm

  208. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 9:53 pm

You’re being obtuse and I’m not going to argue with you. He *can’t* play center. This isn’t a question of “is he the worst of n options”. He’s not on that list of n options. He cannot play center field in the major leagues.

  209. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:55 pm

  210. argh on August 7th, 2006 9:55 pm

  211. IdahoInvader on August 7th, 2006 9:57 pm

  214. DMZ on August 7th, 2006 9:58 pm

Or speak at all, for that matter.

  241. manny ortez on August 7th, 2006 10:57 pm

DMZ, you are now my hero for using the word “obtuse” in a conversation. One of my favorite words to describe peoples’ tendencies in argument. Have you discovered the wonderful world of “disingenuous?” I find it great fun to accuse my friends of being disingenuously obtuse. (Usually it takes a few drinks before I start saying things like that though.)

On topic, is there anything JJ has been doing differently lately? He seems kind of shaky lately. Do y’all think it’s just hitters adapting to the splitter, or just not hitting the strike zone as much, or….? ???

  242. pablothegreat on August 7th, 2006 11:47 pm

Be careful, calling the wrong person “obtuse” can get you thrown in solitary confinement for two months.

  243. bookbook on August 8th, 2006 12:35 am

I’m sorry, Jar (105): Inappropriate use of the word “Jesus” is not at all like using a racial slur against Jews. Not showing proper deference to a person’s beliefs is quite a bit different than denigrating a person based on their ethnicity.

The closest parallel would be spelling out “God” (or even worse the hebrew letters, if your keyboard produces them), which is considered sacriligious by the more orthodox practitioners of the Jewish religion. (”Hashem” means “He who shall not be named” roughly.)

  244. greymstreet on August 8th, 2006 12:57 am
