One of our starters now has an ERA of 5.91 on the season...

Why on earth are we not calling up some random Joe Dudemar from the farm? Because he might suck and have an ERA of 5? That's still a whole friggin run better than Pineiro.

:grrr:

Mateo's slider is actually good for a groundball if he locates it down, and in past years he's pulled off some DPs with it. This year, he can't get the ball down at all, his slider has been fairly flat lately, which Hargrove knows 'cause he's commented on it, and the GBs haven't been there. Yes, Mateo was going to put the ball in the strikezone, but the idea that Mateo Version 06.0 was going to get the DP there is just . . . prayerful. Sean Green is a GB pitcher: he was the better bet by far to get a GB, but he doesn't have his manager's confidence 'cause 'he's a rookie.' This is part of being a mediocre manager, getting locked into roles to the point that you convince yourself of seemingly necessary illusions rather than actual marginal probabilities.

We are not going to enjoy this road trip. Good thing I have other, better things on my mind at the present.

I'm not a Hargrove hater, but he really is showing off his bad side in the last week. Why, oh why did he send P i n e i r o out for the 7th? Grover has watched Joel pitch for over a year and a half, and by God any Major League manager should know when his guy's done. Grover in the paper today: "Every game from here on out is important." Really? Like, that series just blown against our main division rival _wasn't_ important? I mean, it COULDN'T have been _that_ important since Grover didn't bother to adjust his pitching rotation, instead sending out his three worst pitchers against the As' three _best_ pitchers.

Grover isn't stupid in so many words. He simply expects that when he writes out his line-up card, the names on it are the best ten names available to him at the time, and it's up to those guys to win or lose. Grover doesn't make match-ups to improve his odds. He's locked into roles for guys until and unless they massively fail. He really, really believes that it's up to 'his regulars' to win the game, and with that kind of psychological burden he can't bring himself to intervene when the match-up isn't there, or it's reasonable to infer that the performance won't be there in a particular game situation. Grover's not a jerk, he's decent at managing people, and he's better than Melvin, but at this point he's a burden to his squad because he's not capable of making them better.

I don't know what it is about this team, but it seems like we go out of our way to lose every game that would bring us back to .500. I could actually research that to see if there's any truth behind it, but right now I'm just so annoyed at the whole thing that I'd rather pout and not do anything.

*mumble, grumble*

220

One walk and five hits in Arlington? That's pretty bad. Not to mention our August stats going into this game are about as exciting as a funeral:

.227avg .272obp .332slg

Somehow I don't buy the bad luck excuse this time. Not saying they didn't hit the ball hard, but you're saying they don't deserve ANY blame?

219: Actually, the Mariners hit a ton of hard line drives right at people. I don't think the offense deserves any blame.

Wow!

This game had literally EVERYTHING that is wrong with the our idiot manager, our impatient/impotent offense (even at the American League's version of what Coor's USED to be) and our one MAJOR WEAK LINK in the 'pen.

And NONE of it surprised ANY of us...sigh
