Game 143, Blue Jays at Mariners

Dave · September 11, 2006 at 5:49 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Lilly vs Woods, 7:05 pm.

To be honest with you, I have no idea why you should watch this game. Lefty on the mound, so no Doyle tonight. The team can’t hit southpaws. Jake Woods is starting against the Blue Jays. If this game has a redeeming quality, I don’t know what it is.

CF Ichiro!
3B Beltre
SS Betancourt
LF Ibanez
1B Sexson
DH Perez
C Johjima
2B Lopez
RF Morse

versus Toronto’s vastly superior batting order.

    Well, it’s baseball.

  2. Jeff Sullivan on September 11th, 2006 6:07 pm

    Hardly.

  3. waldo rojas on September 11th, 2006 6:08 pm

    FRUTOMANIA!

  4. ronnie on September 11th, 2006 6:12 pm

sept doyle got a hit of the big unit if I recall, so he should play

  5. bigred on September 11th, 2006 6:29 pm

    We’re not mathematically eliminated yet!?!?

  6. Goose on September 11th, 2006 6:34 pm

    Magic number is 7.

  7. JMB on September 11th, 2006 6:37 pm

From the “Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder” file… you should watch it because you can. Sure, I could MLB.tv it tonight, but the game starts at 10pm my time and I have to be in the kitchen, er, bakeshop, early tomorrow AM.

Not that I’m not happy to finally be back in school (less than six months to go!) after nine weeks off.

  8. joser on September 11th, 2006 6:40 pm

I’m going to watch it because sometime in January I’m going to be wishing I could watch an M’s game, or any baseball game, and I won’t be able to.

  9. Tek Jansen on September 11th, 2006 6:41 pm

Well, since Doyle will not be in the lineup, I don’t have to watch Hargrove make him attempt to sac bunt. There is always a silver lining

  10. JMB on September 11th, 2006 6:41 pm

    That’s what I’m saying, joser.

  11. apunetid on September 11th, 2006 6:44 pm

How could you not want to watch this team? In our past five series, we took two of three from a team that’s been to the World Series 39 times, then swept the 2004 world champions, then took two of three from the 2002 series winners (God’s team!), then won a game against the World Series winners of 2007, and finally took two from the team who used to have the best record in baseball! We must be the best team ever!

  12. _David_ on September 11th, 2006 6:44 pm

Maybe we unexpectedly shell Lily and Gibbons will leave him in there until his pitch count hits 100 just to spite him. That would make it interesting.

  13. _David_ on September 11th, 2006 6:46 pm

Detroit no longer has the best record. In fact it’s looking like they might not even win their own division

  14. Tek Jansen on September 11th, 2006 6:47 pm

No Bloomquist. That is reason to watch.

  15. Emerald on September 11th, 2006 7:07 pm

Sounded like Valle said “A little Bitchin’ and a little Hittin’” HAH!

  16. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:09 pm

If they won’t fire Grover for hitting Betancourt 3rd, they won’t fire him for anything.

  17. JMB on September 11th, 2006 7:15 pm

There are far greater abuses than hitting Betancourt 3rd, IMO.

  18. LB on September 11th, 2006 7:21 pm

    Sigh. Nice throw, Joh.

At least not many people were there to see it.

  19. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:22 pm

There are far greater abuses than hitting Betancourt 3rd, IMO.

True, but hitting Betancourt 3rd is probably the most obvious to the casual fan.

  20. Emerald on September 11th, 2006 7:24 pm

I think Dave’s right, is there really any point to watching this game? Anything better to do?

  21. _David_ on September 11th, 2006 7:26 pm

Well if you hate the raiders you can watch them get picked apart by LT and a rookie QB

  22. JMB on September 11th, 2006 7:27 pm

I dunno… a true casual fan sees Betancourt’s .300 BA and thinks he’s a very good hitter. Better than those bums Sexson and Beltre!

  23. vaughn leland on September 11th, 2006 7:28 pm

think about jan. 24 when your choices are nba (bobcats vs grizzlies) or ncaa hoops (sienna vs iona), then chose to watch baseball now if you so desire.

  24. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:29 pm

Does Berman call him Tim ‘Pictures of’ Lilly? Does anyone know this?

  25. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:32 pm

    22

Very true, but a true casual fan would be pleased by Ibanez and Sexson’s HR and RBI totals.

How runs has Betancourt driven in this year? 6? The true casual fan views Betancourt (and his shiny average) as a leadoff hitter.

  26. matthew on September 11th, 2006 7:32 pm

Are there a lot of Mariner fans that buy beads?

  27. mark s. on September 11th, 2006 7:34 pm

the ONLY reason I am watching is because my mother called me to say she picked up ROW 1 seats right by the M’s dugout. So I am looking out to see if she is on tv.

  28. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:35 pm

When I saw “Lind, DH” in the starting lineup, I could help but laugh… then I remembered it was 2006, and Chico is probably 50 by now.

  29. JMB on September 11th, 2006 7:35 pm

Ted “Don’t Call me Evangeline” Lilly would be more Berman’s style, I’d think.

  30. JMB on September 11th, 2006 7:37 pm

A fair point. Our hypothetical casual fan probably wants Betancourt hitting first or second (love those good contact, bat control artist types in the #2 slot).

  31. vaughn leland on September 11th, 2006 7:39 pm

    27. homeplate side or right field side or right on top of dugout

  32. mark s. on September 11th, 2006 7:41 pm

    31. right side of the dugout (section 120), by the camera well. She told me she can look right into the dugout.

  33. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:42 pm

    30

I dunno. I gave up on traditional stats when I was 11-12 years old, so my memories of evaluating players by the ‘traditional’ stat trinity are hazy at best.

And you’re right, Pictures of Lily probably was never a hit in the states, so it would be a reach.

  34. msb on September 11th, 2006 7:45 pm

    ummmmmmm. ummmmm.

to watch Ted Lilly blink his beady little eyes as he prepares to throw a pitch?

speaking of winter, wonder if anyone will air any of the Japan tour games this go-round?

  35. joser on September 11th, 2006 7:48 pm

#23, that’s exactly the kind of thing I’m dreading.

  36. JI on September 11th, 2006 7:48 pm

wonder if anyone will air any of the Japan tour games this go-round

That’s why we need an MLB Network.

Speaking of the casual fan, do you think this hypothetical individual would view RJ 2006, as a better season than RJ 2004, particularly if we wins 20? The Krukker might, and he played in the game for 1x years.

  37. Emerald on September 11th, 2006 7:49 pm

Well, I guess I will have some Baseball withdrawls, but I’m usually very reserved during the offseason. 99% of the offseason I actually enjoy being without Baseball. Sometimes Baseball season is so time consuming, trying to watch all the games possible, visiting blogs daily, etc etc.

Besides, if it wasn’t for Baseball season, winter would be my favorite time of the year :D (And I’m not a huge Football fan)

  38. joser on September 11th, 2006 7:50 pm

You know, considering we were all happy with Betancourt and his fantastic defense when he was batting 250, I really don’t think we have anything to complain about. Oh, wait, we’re complaining about Hargrove again, not Yuni. Nevermind, carry on.

  39. Emerald on September 11th, 2006 7:53 pm

    Mark S,

Those are some prime seats, I usually (four or five times a year) snag the first row seat on Section 118. Best seat in Baseball if you know who to buy them from (And when). A little unknown fact to some people is that the some season ticket holders release their tickets back to the Mariners in exchange for other tickets just hours before game time, and you can buy them from the will call (if your lucky enough) for face value. Or just buy them from the season ticket holder for face value.

  40. joser on September 11th, 2006 7:55 pm

So Glaus is 4 for 22 so far in Sept. I know he was out with some medical issues (sinus or something?) but he seems to have run out of gas. Still 8th in the AL in HR and 9th in BB, though. Meanwhile Wells is having a hell of year for $4M and change with another year yet to run.

  41. true_slicky on September 11th, 2006 7:59 pm

So, Dave, are you saying its a bad idea to Tivo Prison Break?

  42. JI on September 11th, 2006 8:00 pm

    40

Not to mention that O-Dogg is more than pulling his weight for the Melvin-9.

Best seats I’ve ever had: -The Commissioner’s Box- by the 1st base dugout, I won them in a radio contest.

  43. JI on September 11th, 2006 8:02 pm

BTW, the slowest man in baseball is Frank Thomas. The guy is on pace for 40+ homers but only 9 doubles.

  44. true_slicky on September 11th, 2006 8:03 pm

24: hahahahahahahahaha! that one’s awesome! if berman doesn’t, you should patent it!

    Hey Emerald,
My folk’s get the half season package, mon-thurs. games. But they can never go Tues, or day games. So those tickets get traded in at the start of the year.
Tonight my mom went to the exchange booth and lucked out. We’ve found that the exchange booth usually has very good seats for games in low demand. This year with the exception of about 3 games, I have been able to improve my seats by about 10 rows.

So for anyone looking to trade up right before the game go to the exchange booth. It’s free if you exchange within your section.

  46. true_slicky on September 11th, 2006 8:09 pm

whoops, I meant trademark. same frickin’ thing.

3-0. Dave’s right. not worth watching (or listening, in my case.) but yet… I still will.

aaaand the squeeze makes it 4-0. sigh. managerial competence, how sorely is that missing in Seattle? why do I feel that Dusty Baker will get rewarded with the hatchet job he’s done to the Cubbies by being the M’s mamanger next year? *shudder*

  47. msb on September 11th, 2006 8:10 pm

so, what, Gibbons is so terrifed of the Mighty Mariner Offense that he is sac bunting for an extra run?????

  48. tarheels on September 11th, 2006 8:14 pm

kenji’s trying to play catch with ichiro
    nice play by yuni..

    43. thanks for the heads up on the doubles and the big hurt, we’ll use it

  51. Lauren, token chick on September 11th, 2006 8:22 pm

I missed this weekend’s games for a trip to Whistler, and this is my punishment.

  52. colm on September 11th, 2006 8:25 pm

OK, it was on the radio a while ago, so I’m late to the point here. But if I ever hear that Farmer’s Insurance “There’s been a fire in our house” commercial again, I’m going to go fucking postal.

I mean, if you had a fire in your house would you be talking like the in-touch-with-his-feminine-side, gush-ball male lead from a tele-novella?

“There’s an entire airforce heading our way”
-I’m willing to be that there won’t be
    “People are parachuting down”
-You might want to look again, because you sound as if you’ve been drinking Rightguard Toilet Duck.

Who do they think they’re fooling?

Ah, it beats talking about this game. At least this should mean no Jake Woods in the 07 rotation.

  53. vaughn leland on September 11th, 2006 8:36 pm

    51. is the glacier still open for skiing ?

  54. JI on September 11th, 2006 8:37 pm

What is the point of having Mike Morse on the 40-man roster?

  55. Lauren, token chick on September 11th, 2006 8:40 pm

Errr… I don’t know. I would doubt it. Everyone up there is mountain biking and ziptrekking and treetop touring.

  56. Allen Jacobs on September 11th, 2006 8:41 pm

    54…he hits better than Bloomquist.

  57. mark s. on September 11th, 2006 8:52 pm

that was nice to see a DP performed by our team

  58. true_slicky on September 11th, 2006 8:53 pm

    double play?

shouldn’t John McDonald hit a, oh I don’t know, a grand slam when he comes up with the bases loaded vs. the M’s?

  59. IdahoInvader on September 11th, 2006 8:54 pm

    52

We should also go postal if we have to see the likes of Cruceta and Huber trying to hold down the fort. I’m sorry, but having a AAA exclusive starter in the pen for middle relief followed by “the dude traded for friggin’ Dave Hansen” in the ninth, makes it much less of a mystery as to how we have up three more runs after Felix was taken out.

  60. diggerbarnes on September 11th, 2006 8:55 pm

    zaun hit into that dp

  61. mark s. on September 11th, 2006 8:57 pm

Morse vs. Bloomquist as 4th outfielder
Jake vs. Joel as 5th starter

How did Woods ever get into the starting rotation compared to … all the other pitchers in the organization.

  62. vaughn leland on September 11th, 2006 8:57 pm

    not on tv

  63. Allen Jacobs on September 11th, 2006 9:17 pm

Perez has never got it going since the trade. Hopefully Bavasi will look to upgrade his “lefty killer”.

  64. vaughn leland on September 11th, 2006 9:19 pm

    63. gotta play to earn your pay

  65. Lauren, token chick on September 11th, 2006 9:24 pm

    Give him a gold glove.

  66. mark s. on September 11th, 2006 9:24 pm

    nice catch raul!

  67. Josh on September 11th, 2006 10:27 pm

    Thread kinda died. =\

  68. Evan on September 11th, 2006 10:31 pm

The game wasn’t on TV in Seattle? That blows. It was a decent game, and any Jays game with Lilly pitching means there’s a chance to watch him punch out John Gibbons.

Safeco was deserted.* There were maybe 30 people scattered through the outfield seats.

    * No, I wasn’t there. I watched the Jays’ broadcast. Rance Mullinicks is an entertaining colour guy.

  69. NODO Dweller on September 11th, 2006 11:56 pm

Was at the game, was a snoozer and there couldn’t have been more than 15k people, even though the announced attendance was somewhere in the low 20’s. Highlights were:

    1) Traded my decent season tickets for some seats right above the Ms on deck circle
    2) A couple nice plays in field by Raul & Ichiro
    3) An even better play by the Japanese tourist next to me, who managed to catch a foul ball using a plastic cup 1/2 filled with popcorn

Too bad the game wasn’t televised locally, pretty sure my wife and I probably made it on camera for the last one.

  70. cgmonk on September 12th, 2006 12:00 am

This game was on tv locally, FSN NorthWest.

  71. stevek1700 on September 12th, 2006 7:40 am

Free ticket to the game 3 rows off the field…awesome…
    Free parking before the game…great…
Having Doyle sign the back of your ticket…priceless…

  72. Chiro1623 on September 12th, 2006 9:53 am

Morse is a better player than bloomquist.
