Game 148, Mariners at Royals

Dave · September 16, 2006 at 3:30 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Pineiro vs Redman, 4:10 pm.

It’s a Saturday, it’s a terrible pitching matchup, and since Redman’s a lefty, there will be no Doyle today.

Go do something else.

I dare say that it’d be better to watch the Husky football game on FSN than that putrid matchup. And I’m talking about a Husky football team that won 2 games last year.

Wow. Morse and Bloomquist in the same lineup.

My goal is to see Willie’s OPS below .600 by the end of the year.

I don’t think you can really make a personal goal out of someone else’s performance.

Yes I can. My likelihood for failure is much higher when it’s not in my control, but I still can.

I would say that, in your case, the exact opposite might be true.

Really, they’re letting Pineiro start again? What is the point? I would rather see Cruceta on zero days rest than Pineiro. I would rather see Jimenez. I would love to see Feierabend get a start. Or maybe just have nine guys throw one inning each. That could be interesting, in a first week of spring training kind of way.

I wonder how many times we will hear “All-Star Mark Redman” and “He’s an All-Star so he must be good”

Guess I will get my baseball fix by continuing my owners mode on MVP Baseball 2005 for the Xbox. I designed an outdoor stadium with astroturf and a high right field wall and I named it King County Field. I play with the 1981 retro Mariners road and home jerseys.

Sweet Jesus. Why the fuck do they keep running Bloomquist out there? Does Hargrove have a Willie Bloomquist at-bat bonus written into his contract?

I seem to remember that once on this blog, Mike Morse was referred to as guy who would be a raker(paraphrasing)…

    How far we’ve come.

  30. David J. Corcoran I on September 16th, 2006 4:36 pm

I don’t remeber anybody saying he would be a raker…

    What is a raker?

  33. _MFAN_ on September 16th, 2006 4:40 pm

If I knew what a raker was we might be able to answer this.

  34. CSG on September 16th, 2006 4:41 pm

At least Morse isn’t failing drug tests for residual levels of steroids anymore. He’s got that going for him.

  35. CSG on September 16th, 2006 4:41 pm

    Hurrah for Ichiro!

  40. Corey on September 16th, 2006 4:45 pm

I can’t believe he swung at that last pitch. Bad bad Beltre.

  41. The Unknown Comic on September 16th, 2006 4:45 pm

Glad to hear that because for some reason my mind was thinking that raker had something to do with sexual orientation.

  42. Lauren, token chick on September 16th, 2006 4:47 pm

I think maybe you’re thinking of “rake,” which also has nothing to do with orientation. Just someone who’s into sex and seduction.

Morse would go up exponentially in my estimation if he came out! (Note to Morse: way better way to get publicity than taking steroids.)

  43. _MFAN_ on September 16th, 2006 4:49 pm

is there a stat to measure a players raker-ness, or is it one of those intangibles you just can’t measure?

  49. bigred on September 16th, 2006 4:56 pm

A rake is a man or frequently a stock character, who wastes his (usually inherited) fortune on “wine, women, and song,” incurring lavish debts in the process. The rake is also frequently a cad: a man who seduces a young woman and impregnates her before leaving, often to her social or financial ruin. To call the character a rake calls attention to his promiscuity and wild spending of money; to call the character a cad implies a callous seducer who coldly breaks his victim’s heart.

    #49– a classic usage is in Hogarth’s A Rake’s progress

as Joel tries to help kill the final two weeks…. this from the Dead Horse Flagellation Department.

It hasn’t yet appeared on the Times site, but Larry Stone has an article online about how safe Bavasi & Hargrove might be … this from the San Jose Mercury News of all places:

“With no pennant race to occupy our time – again – the only intrigue remaining in the Mariners’ season is to mull over the employment future of their architects of mediocrity.”

  64. msb on September 16th, 2006 5:19 pm

so is it really that wrong to hope that Joel gets his shorts handed to him?

  65. jefffrane on September 16th, 2006 5:20 pm

I guess this is another game that won’t make it into the Portland Oregonian as “game of the day.” Up until recently, the only game covered in detail (kind of) has been the M’s game. Now they’re relegated to the capsule coverage from the AP and the paper isn’t even pretending that the M’s mean more than, oh, the Pirates.

With Joel starting, a battle of the titans in KC means even less than zero.

  66. JI on September 16th, 2006 5:20 pm

Is it too late for the M’s to rein on their promise of leaving Pineiro in the rotation for the duration?

  67. VaBeachMarinersFan on September 16th, 2006 5:21 pm

No. When you take the angle of the Triple (S) divided by the arc of the triple (U) and multiply it by the Joel factor (C) + Hargrove factors (K) you can see Joel is a different pitcher.

    Equation: S/U*C+K=Joel

  68. msb on September 16th, 2006 5:21 pm

nah, Joel didn’t ‘earn’ it– they just wanted to confirm that he really was a crap starter, and Joel is kindly obliging.

It’s really not appropriate for Feierabend to pitch on a weekend.

  86. CSG on September 16th, 2006 5:33 pm

I think Hargrove should start Joel on 3 days rest the rest of the season so he can get to 30 starts and make a run at Jose Lima’s record for highest AL ERA for a starter with 30 or more starts. Lima also holds the NL record for that stat.

I went to Feierabend last week, as I explained when I defined it I think. The fries with curry ketchup and soft pretzel are excellent. Potato pancakes and deep-fried pickles are ok, but not overwhelming. Large beer selection, although they were out of several things. Highly understaffed that particular happy hour. Well, the only Mariners game I have been able to attend this year and I get the return of Joel, no Snelling, no Felix for the entire series, WFB starting at SS, and a 4-7 lose to he worset team in baseball.

It’s hard being an M’s fan, but trying being one in Kansas City.

  110. Josh on September 16th, 2006 7:25 pm

Really, all I can take away from this game is:

Snelling > Redman (otherwise Hargrove would have started him)
Ichiro > Pineiro (it doesn’t have to be related, but could apply to pitching if I wanted it to)

It’s hard being an M’s fan, but trying being one in Kansas City.

If they value your presence in town as much as your team’s, you’d think they’d be treating you like “royalty” just to get you to stay.

Very few of us face that, I am a contractor and I don’t expect I’ll lose the ability to build houses all of a sudden.

Don’t know if anyone is still interested in a review, but I’ve been to Feireabend several times now and the entrees are great. Their sausages are terrific, they come with a huge ton of fries, and the curry ketchup is tasty. I’ve also had their spaetzle, their stuffed portobello mushroom, and their schnitzel sandwich, which was awesome. The only critique I would have of their sandwiches is they come on baguette style bread, which means the crust is kind of tough (artisan-like) and so the sandwich innards have a tendency to get squished out the back end when you take a bite. Big beer list, and if it weren’t for the fact that after eating lunch there I have to walk back to work and actually get someting done, I’d know their selection a lot better than I do.
