Game 160, Rangers at Mariners

DMZ · September 29, 2006 at 6:10 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

Padilla v Feireabend. The Mariners are playing for a shot at .488, the Rangers would love to continue beating up the M’s to finish above the break-even mark themselves.

What crazy lineup will the newly-emboldened Hargrove come up with? What wacky hijinks will he get up to?

Unfortunately, it looks like he wasn’t feeling particularly adventurous.
CF-L Ichiro
3B-R Beltre
C-R Johjima
LF-L Ibanez
1B-R Sexson
DH-L Broussard
2B-R Lopez
RF-L Snelling
SS-R Betancourt

The .500 ship has sailed. .488’s not so bad, though.

  2. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 6:16 pm

    Fixed.

  3. David* on September 29th, 2006 6:18 pm

This isn’t grover’s worst lineup by far.

Triple steal. With two outs. In a tie game.

  5. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 6:19 pm

    I’m posting the lineup now.

  6. Coach Owens on September 29th, 2006 6:19 pm

The Mariners are really playing for a shot to tie the Rangers for third place.

  7. David* on September 29th, 2006 6:21 pm

Look at all those left handed socks!

  8. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 6:35 pm

I haven’t seen this many lefty socks since I attended the Sifl and Olly convention.

  9. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 6:51 pm

Ah. M’s are an underdog tonight, at +114. The spread is a run and a half and it looks like a ton of people have taken the M’s with the run and a half, which is interesting.

  10. Coach Owens on September 29th, 2006 6:52 pm

Joaquin Arias the Rangers shortstop for tonight really looks like he’s lying about his age (says he was born September 21, 1984.

  11. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 6:54 pm

    So far in September:

Dobbs has 10 AB’s, Adam Jones has 2.

    What’s wrong with this picture?

  12. joser on September 29th, 2006 6:59 pm

Meanwhile, over in a game that actually matters — 4th inning, Phillies at Florida:
    – C. Coste flied out to center
    - A. Nunez singled to right
    - J. Moyer singled to left, A. Nunez to second
    - J. Rollins doubled to deep right center, A. Nunez scored, J. Moyer to third
    - M. Herges relieved B. Moehler
    - S. Victorino singled to right, J. Moyer scored, J. Rollins to third
    - C. Utley singled to second, J. Rollins scored, S. Victorino to second
    - R. Howard popped out to shortstop
    - P. Burrell walked, S. Victorino to third, C. Utley to second
    - D. Dellucci hit by pitch, S. Victorino scored, C. Utley to third, P. Burrell to second
    - C. Coste doubled to deep left, C. Utley and P. Burrell scored, D. Dellucci to third
    - A. Nunez intentionally walked
    - J. Moyer grounded out to pitcher

Moyer gets a hit and scores a run, Ryan Howard pops out. I guess the Phillies will take offense wherever they can find it. ;)

    Dobbs is a proven pitcher.

Wait (hey! I can post again!)

  17. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 7:03 pm

Actually, in games that matter to *me*, the A’s play the Angels who, if they win more than one of their remaining games, will put a dent in my otherwise quite nice pre-season over/under predictions.

  18. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:03 pm

I hear we’re going to go get another lefty sock this offseason!

  19. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 7:04 pm

I love that Henderson said that the team’s improvement is the reason Hargrove and all the coaches are coming back for next year… after they just fired some of the coaches.

Also, the chocolate ration has been increased to 20g.

  20. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 7:04 pm

13- Stupid me, how could I forget?

Dobbs has earned those AB’s, with his 8 years in the minors.

18: All of the coaches that we have now are coming back next year.

Mariner Baseball. Its all about maintaining LOW EXPECTATIONS!

  23. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:08 pm

That’s my philosophy. If we can lose, that’s OK. I’m impressed if the whole team shows up to the park!

  24. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 7:09 pm

    Doyle is so awesome.

  25. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 7:10 pm

To make things worse, the A’s are playing a horrible lineup: 3B is Adam Melhuse, SS is Jimenez, and 2B is Perez. Ugh.

  26. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:11 pm

Good lord. Anytime Adam Melhuse STARTS at 3B, there’s a problem. I know he’s been ther ea few times during blowouts over his career, but a start?

  27. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:11 pm

    2B is Ellis though

  28. DMZ on September 29th, 2006 7:12 pm

Wait… every night is propoganda night.

  35. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:30 pm

What? You think I have the power to change the second baseman? If that were the case, Willie would never have played 2nd.

  36. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:32 pm

Hell, even if I had the power to choose the A’s second baseman, Frank Thomas would be playing there!

  37. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 7:33 pm

32- I’d have to go with Raul. Ichiro and JJ have to be up there as well. Maybe a sympathy vote for Joel!

Frank Thomas could fall over and have twice the range of Bret Boone.

  41. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:39 pm

I’d pay a decent amount of money to see that.

That’s what the Mariners need to do, is bring Edgar and Wilson and Henderson and Olerud and Buhner and Valle out of retirement. That would put butts in the seats.

  42. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 7:39 pm

  58. eponymous coward on September 29th, 2006 8:05 pm

Hey, but Hargrove IS uniquely qualified- due to his signature being on a contract for $2 million in 2007 to manage the Seattle Mariners. Nobody else meets that description, right?

  59. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 8:06 pm

And yes, I’ve checked to see if the cat will willingly intake alcohol. For some reason the smell of Monarch turns her off.

Vets say it’s totally ethical if the cat never leaves the house. I don’t agree with it, but my parents wouldn’t have kept it and it would have gone to the pound if we didn’t. And she can’t tell, she thinks she has claws.

I’ll happily drink good vodka straight ice-cold, or in a mixed drink where the vodka IS part of the drink, but if you’re going to bury the flavor under that much sugar, sure, use the cheapest rotgut you can.

I’d like to point out that Raul Ibanez, a former catcher, is often lauded for his strong throwing arm.

He’s something like 0 for 1,423 trying to throw guys out at the plate this year. He absolutely sucks at throwing runners out from the outfield.

  96. eponymous coward on September 29th, 2006 8:29 pm

93 and 94 – Speaking of outfield throwing arms and conventional wisdom and such…

In general (and more important factors such as speed, range, routes, etc being equal), shouldn’t you put your best outfield arm in center, 2nd best arm in left and worst arm in right, since this is where the vast majority of throws come from? Isn’t putting your best arm in RF since that’s where the longest throws occur far less frequently kind of like saving your closer for save situations?

Everyone seems to accept that the best arm belongs in RF (in fact, it was long used as an argument why Ichiro shouldn’t play CF), but I just don’t see the logic in it. Anybody have anything to add to that.

  104. David J. Corcoran I on September 29th, 2006 8:43 pm

    Captain Morgan is good.

    But I drink Admiral.

  105. eponymous coward on September 29th, 2006 8:44 pm

Throws to home, sure. The thing is a good arm in RF turns doubles to “oops singles”.

  106. Dave on September 29th, 2006 8:45 pm

I’d argue that arm strength should play very little factor in deciding which outfielder plays where, so practically, I’m not sure the answer to this question matters.

But, just to play along, I don’t think its true that there are more throws coming from LF than from RF. So no, I think the idea that the better arm in RF, given two players with equal range, is correct.

  107. David* on September 29th, 2006 8:52 pm

    Dave,

So is speed the biggest factor of what OF position should be filled by which player?

  108. Dave on September 29th, 2006 8:53 pm

Hendu just announced that Padilla’s pitch count doesn’t matter because “those slow curveballs don’t take anything out of your arm.”

Honestly, if I was forced to work with this guy, I’d probably have thrown him out of the booth at some point this year. Literally throw him out of the booth.

  109. Dave on September 29th, 2006 8:54 pm

So is speed the biggest factor of what OF position should be filled by which player?

Range, not speed. Coco Crisp is fast, but is not a good outfielder.

Speed is certainly part of range, but it isn’t range in and of itself.

  110. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 8:55 pm

    105, Hendu finishing strong.

seriously Hnedu if that was the case Moyer could pitch 9 innings every start no matter what.

  111. David* on September 29th, 2006 8:56 pm

    Range, ok.

So OF with best range in CF I assume. Then from there do you think it matters who plays LF/RF?

  112. apunetid on September 29th, 2006 8:57 pm

5 out 6 of Padilla’s Ks have come with two men on.

  113. Coach Owens on September 29th, 2006 8:57 pm

Arm strength must not matter I mean just 2004 and last year we had Randy Winn in center and he has a terrible arm.

  115. Dave on September 29th, 2006 9:06 pm

So OF with best range in CF I assume. Then from there do you think it matters who plays LF/RF?

It depends on the configuration of your home park. I happen to think that the giant gap in left center at Safeco should have the Mariners playing their second best range guy in left, and hiding their worst defensive outfielder (Ibanez, currently) in right.

  116. Dave on September 29th, 2006 9:09 pm

For instance, if Ibanez didn’t run like he was carrying a fleet of pianos, that ball doesn’t get to the wall.

    Joel. Sigh.

  126. LB on September 29th, 2006 9:59 pm

I thought the conventional wisdom was that you put the better arm in RF because that guy has to make two long throws (to home and 3rd), but there is only one long throw coming from LF (to home).

I thought the conventional wisdom was also that you had to but the strong arm in RF to try to prevent more runners from going from 1st to 3rd on singles to the outfield.

Jeezus. I leave the thread for an hour and the game goes to hell.

    Curse of Corco!

I’m going to start quoting post 116 whenever a meeting at work is going too long.

Family reunions, church picnics, sex talk with the kids, it pretty much works across the board.

    Raul is good.

  134. David* on September 29th, 2006 10:22 pm

Wait. Did I kill the game thread twice in one night?

    I sorry :(

  135. _MFAN_ on September 29th, 2006 10:24 pm

    128-No, Fruto killed it.

Like there won’t be more garbage time this weekend…

  137. msb on September 29th, 2006 10:48 pm

sigh. Fruto came in, just about the same time the temperature dropped a good 10-15 degrees. Made for a swell evening at the ballpark….

OMG, Ibanez has been outstanding in left field?

well, he has been out standing in left field.

    Wow, a game thread with about 3% game comments—but many remarks regarding beverage composition. . . . I’ts September under .500. Again. : (

    Finally, my first post.

I just got back from the game not too long ago. I really want to believe that these guys will be good next year instead of mediocre. However, mediocre is better than bad…and so I will pay $7 for a bleacher seat.

The M’s Team Store was having a sale outisde on the concourse during the game tonight. Most of the stuff was, eh, so-so. HOWEVER, they were selling JEFF CIRILLO magnets for 10 cents apiece!

    I bought two!

I gave one to my friend Matt, who appreciated it.

This was one of the better parts of the game. The other was our impressions of Hargrove strategizing…complete with crazy, mad scientist laughter. “I will put in….OSWALDO NAVARRO! It is what they’ll expect least….MUAHAHAHAHAHAH!”

    And so on.

    Hello everyone…

I don’t know how good they will be overall next season, but the team is going in the right direction. There are many reasons to be optmistic despite Hargrove coming back.
Managment seems committed to a good core of young players like Lopez, Betancourt, Snelling, Felix and Lowe. Obviously a lot can happen between now and the 2007 season, but I am looking forward to a very good team next season.

I’m hoping, hoping, hoping for a good team. I have always kinda pulled for the Mariners in the AL West, even when I was living back home in Oklahoma and watching my dad pull for the Angels.

I moved out here in ‘03, the last 90 win season. I completely fell in love with the team in ‘04 during the first 90-loss season.

I’ve actually gotten my dad to switch teams from the Angels to the M’s…this after I took him on the Safeco Tour when he was out here in March and told him about Yuni, Jose, and the potential Good Pickup of Joh.

He now proudly wears a Kenji shirt around the small town in which I grew up in Oklahoma.

I hope that the M’s are a good team next season not only for the sake of the Good M’s fans, but also for my Dad who is going to come out in June specifically so we can catch a series together.

Oh, and then there’s that being competative thing. A minor detail, really.

Feierabend’s name should be easy to spell in future threads and stop comments from being deleted unnecessarily. Because, when you break his name down, any baseball fan should be able to remember it:

Fei-ERA-bend. “Fei’s ERA is around the bend!”

And there you have it. (It’s kind of like how I visualize Joel Pineiro on the mound as a big pine tree ptching so I can remember his name, which, thankfully, I will no longer have to do!)
