Playoffs for Saturday, Oct 7

DMZ · October 7, 2006 at 8:55 am · Filed Under Mariners

San Diego at St. Louis, ESPN @ 10:09 (where did these 09s come from? Are they really that desperate to squeeze another 4m of commercials in?)(yes)
New York Yankees at Detroit, FOX @ 1:09. The A’s await the winner. Go Tigers woooo!
New York Mets at Los Angeles, FOX@ 5:05.

I gotta say, none of these pitching matchups really do it for me. Young v Suppan, Wright v Bonderman, Trachsel v Maddux. Bonderman vs the Yankees is the most interesting, but other than that… eh.

More importantly, you can still RSVP for the USSM Feed this Friday. About half the spots went in the first couple of hours, but all is not lost yet.

He’s Mike Lupica. He is congenitally unable to calm down.

  2. Funkatron on October 7th, 2006 10:28 pm

So, to clarify: Bonderman was born in Kennewick, but he went to Pasco High School. Apparently they’re just going off his birthplace when they announce him as being “from Kennewick.”

And yes, those announcers are bizarre regarding the weather. Wasn’t it 90 here last week or something? All those retirees aren’t moving here because of their severe fear of earthquakes.

    Re. #194:

    I’m not a semanticist.

    Re. #197:

My post regarding Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey, Jr. was facetious.

    Re. #200:

The antitheisis of Mike Lupica is Mitch Albom.

Yet, that notwithstanding, they are both awful novelists, sports writers, newspaper columnists, and television pundits.

  4. msb on October 7th, 2006 10:37 pm

looks like they’ve moved the game tomorrow to the 5:00 PT time slot on ESPN… ‘just about the same time the Chargers and Steelers will kick off at Qualcomm’ according to the San Diego paper 🙂

  5. Jim Thomsen on October 7th, 2006 10:43 pm

Here’s a great dissection of why Mitch Albom is a horrible human being.

  6. colm on October 7th, 2006 10:44 pm

I know nothing of Mike Lupica but I saw “Tuesdays with Morrie” onstage at the Seattle Rep on my birthday in April, and I’m NEVER going to forgive Mitch Albom for that torture. 2nd hand, 3rd rate sententious moralizing.

  7. Jim Thomsen on October 7th, 2006 10:46 pm

Mitch Albom is a fabulist all right, but not just in the journalistic sense. Albom is literally a teller of fables, a peddler of shallow morality tales for the masses. You can see it in his risible sports writing, and you can see it in his best-selling books. A representative of Starbucks, which will sell For One More Day as part of its new books promotion, told the Los Angeles Times that the chain wanted its literary selections to be “deeply felt.” Albom’s writing is deeply felt, and dimly thought. He’s a huckster evangelist for the soccer-mom set.

Looks like Torre doesn’t have to worry about Lupica any more. Per ESPN, Torre will be fired and replaced by….yep, Lou Piniella.

  9. colm on October 7th, 2006 10:58 pm

Will Lou have the nads to play Alex at short and move St Derek to 2nd base?

    I know it’s offtopic, but [deleted, off-topic]

  11. AK1984 on October 7th, 2006 11:34 pm

The following is a hypothetical conversation between George Steinbrenner, Brian Cashman, and Lou Piniella:

“Hey,” Lou said to both George and Brian, “can y’all get Junior in pinstripes for me?”

“I’ll have Brian look into that,” replied George.

“Good,” bellowed Lou. “He’d play well with Alex and Randy.”

“Are you sure about that,” quipped Brian. “Junior had an on-base percentage of just .316 in 2006.”

“Statistics are like bikinis,” Lou retorted. “They show a lot, but not everything.”*

    “Brian,” yelled George, “you’re fired!”

I spent an inning and a half watching the Dodgers and Mets, trying to figure out who to root for. Finally decided to root for the Umps. Go Blue!

(That was before the UW-USC game)

Yesterday, before the Yankee’s game, I was listening to XM’s Home Plate and the host (didn’t catch the name) was talking to Mike Timlin. The host, voice trembling like a teeny-bopper seeing Elvis for the first time, asked Timlin if he’d ever seen a line up like the Mighty!, Powerful!, Earth-shakin’ Yankees?

Timlin said “Well, they didn’t have the pitching, but the Mariners, with Junior and Buhner and Edgar and…” He went on to name most of the guys who started a game in the mid nineties for the M’s (including Blowers, Wilson, Tino of course, Sequi…, can’t remember him mentioning Young A-Rod though) “… they could really hit the ball, those Mariners.”

The Host ignored the response and went on to his next question. Wasn’t the Yankee-worship he was looking for apparently.

  13. NBarnes on October 8th, 2006 4:20 am

Really, I think the problem with the Yankees is their lack of pitching. I mean, you can spend the regular season annihilating the Royals and the Orioles with your Lineup’O’Doom, but in the postseason, you really need frontline starting pitching to shut your opponents down and give you the edge you need. The Yankees haven’t had that in the last few years, and it’s showing. After losing to Martinez and Shilling in 2004 and Colon et al in 2005 and now to the Tigers, the Yankees just aren’t built for the postseason.

There’s only one thing to do. The Yankees need frontline starting pitching that knows how to step up and give you 120% when the hardware is on the line. Pitchers with veteran experience and postseason experience.

The Yankees must, this offseason, aquire Kenny Rogers.

    #199: Here’s the real lesson:

Getting to the playoffs can be accomplished alot of ways…

For instance scoring 930 runs while having a roughly major league average pithcing staff or by having a roughly league average offense with the best pitching in the majors…..

However, when the two meet in the playoffs….having the best pitching staff in the majors beats the best offense in the majors….

I’m thinking there is less and less chance the M’s outbid the yanks for DM…… if you can finagle the posting fee somehow in your books, adding him is just the thing a payroll at $194M needs to avoid an even more bloated payroll tax…. they make some of the posting fee back in saved tax versus signing a guy like Zito.. crazy as it seems a posting fee of $30-40M for DM gives the Yanks payroll flexibility….

So, umm, should Yankee fans be worried about Lou Piniella taking charge of Philip Hughes’s career?

  16. msb on October 8th, 2006 8:37 am

#207– dunno about ESPN, but the NY papers have made up their minds:

Torre likely gone after 11-Year stint
    New York Daily News

    Piniella looms over Torre
    New York Daily News

It will be deja Lou all over again in the Bronx
    New York Daily News

It’s time to bring in Lou
    Newsday

    Pinstripes may suit Piniella
    Boston Globe

    Piniella headed to NY?
    Chicago Tribune

  17. Bobby Valentine's Porn Mustache on October 8th, 2006 9:39 am

The best part will be, because Lou will be Stein’s “guy”, he will have his fights with Brian Cashman over which free agents to sign.

I wonder what Jose Paniagua is up to now.

  18. Lauren, token chick on October 8th, 2006 10:11 am

    So… do we get Torre?

  19. Sports on a Schtick on October 8th, 2006 10:21 am

    Re: 217

My thoughts exactly, Lauren. I hope we would if he’s willing.

  20. colm on October 8th, 2006 10:45 am

I’d imagige after 11 years of Steinbrenner, and no post season success in the last six tries, he’s ready for a rest.

  21. Karen on October 8th, 2006 11:18 am

We’d probably have to take ARod + casj as an add-on, and that’s the way they’d get Beltre + M. Lowe…

  22. Karen on October 8th, 2006 11:19 am

Oops. “cash”, not casj (my kitten is sitting on the left side of my keyboard).

  23. Evan on October 8th, 2006 11:23 am

    Oh happy day but
    Daisuke Matsuzaka’s
    posting fee just rose….

Probably true. George was stuck with using Wright in a big game – that’s going to change.

  24. eponymous coward on October 8th, 2006 12:14 pm

Yeah, but I suspect George is going to overbid on the likes of Schmidt, Zito and Meche, too. A smart team will let George do what he’s done for year- burn cash in the Red Queen’s Race, and concentrate on value where it exists.

However, when the two meet in the playoffs….having the best pitching staff in the majors beats the best offense in the majors….

In this series, sure. I’d question making definitive statements.

Did Stone steal your idea in the Times today, Dave?

  26. msb on October 8th, 2006 12:47 pm

you mean here? He does say the payroll is likely to go up, and that “with jobs throughout the organization on the line — the proverbial “hot seat” is now a veritable sectional sofa, with spots for CEO Howard Lincoln, GM Bill Bavasi and manager Mike Hargrove, among others — this is guaranteed to be a sizzling offseason.”

  27. msb on October 8th, 2006 1:11 pm

oh, re, Torre– wouldn’t he be owed over $6M next year? He might just do what Ali has been proposing the last 3 years, and just stay home with the wife & kid….

  28. terry on October 8th, 2006 2:27 pm

#223: of course….but which peg would you hang your hat on?

  29. Evan on October 8th, 2006 3:51 pm

    226 – $7 million.

  30. NBarnes on October 8th, 2006 5:26 pm

I’d rather not get Torre. He’s a poor bullpen user, a poor bench user, adequate at best with lineups. His limitations have been masked by the Yankees’ payroll for a decade now.
