To see who get mowed down by the Tigers.

  2. JI on October 17th, 2006 5:09 pm

The way I see it, Glavine is due for an ass-kicking… and so is Weaver.

I can’t think of a worse LCS matchup ever. Thank God I have a team to root for.

  3. joser on October 17th, 2006 5:14 pm

Hey, but at least last night’s rainout means both guys are rested. Imagine this matchup with both starters on short rest.

Neither team is going to win this series, but one of them is going to manage not to lose it. I agree with what someone said earlier: these two should be playing for the opportunity to have a series with A’s, in the consolation bracket. Can’t we just have the Tigers play the Twins or some other team with a full rotation of actual starters?

  4. Mere Tantalisers on October 17th, 2006 5:20 pm

Twins have a full rotation of actual starters? news to me.

  5. JMB on October 17th, 2006 5:22 pm

    Let’s go Mets.

  6. JMB on October 17th, 2006 5:24 pm

These may not be great teams, but they’re pretty evenly matched, the series is tied after four games and may well go the full seven. I don’t see how this is a bad LCS.

Though I agree, I wouldn’t be nearly as interested if I hadn’t become a casual Mets fan in the past year.

    Ah…I finally have TV again.

  8. DMZ on October 17th, 2006 5:35 pm

Thank goodness. You were in our thoughts and prayers, Corco.

  9. JI on October 17th, 2006 5:39 pm

Ithink the world of LaRussa, but I can’t see why its a good idea to hit Wilson 2nd. They should try Edmonds or Rolen.

  10. JI on October 17th, 2006 5:44 pm

Encarnacion’s bast just made the ugliest noise.

  11. msb on October 17th, 2006 5:45 pm

thank goodness. I was almost as worried that Jay-Z wouldn’t be back, as I was about Corco’s tv situation.

and personally, I find the faux-animated Schwab ads just freaky.

  12. LB on October 17th, 2006 5:48 pm

#11: and personally, I find the faux-animated Schwab ads just freaky.

    Rotoscoped.

Lou Piniella could read the script in the last one: “I like our broker, I really do…”

  13. David J. Corcoran I on October 17th, 2006 5:49 pm

I thank you all for your prayers. They provided me with a late 90’s 13 inch Zenith TV.

  14. msb on October 17th, 2006 5:52 pm

if the Mets are this baffled by Jeff Weaver, what is the Tiger roation going to do to them?

  15. joser on October 17th, 2006 5:57 pm

Wasn’t that a Janis Joplin song?
“Oh Lord, won’t you buy me, a color TV?”

  16. msb on October 17th, 2006 5:58 pm

    Rotoscoped

yah, sort of. Digtal rotoscoping just seems like cheating.

  17. JMB on October 17th, 2006 5:58 pm

You know the advantage always goes to the hitter when he and the pitcher haven’t faced each other before.

Or it’s the other way around. Who knows.

  18. JMB on October 17th, 2006 6:00 pm

Oooh, strike him out throw him out DP.

  19. JI on October 17th, 2006 6:00 pm

    That was ugly.

  20. msb on October 17th, 2006 6:10 pm

while finishing my pesto, I had to wander over to Jason’s site… so, Jason, how is France going?

  21. joser on October 17th, 2006 6:12 pm

France does not go. France merely is.

  22. msb on October 17th, 2006 6:13 pm

    ok, le cuisine du France.

is it wrong to hope that the Cards meet the Tigers, just to see if Duncan really has ‘fixed’ Weaver?

  23. joser on October 17th, 2006 6:19 pm

Ok, so now Pujols has managed to break the field?

  24. DMZ on October 17th, 2006 6:20 pm

    He’s truly a force.

  25. Coach Owens on October 17th, 2006 6:24 pm

Do the Cardinals really deserve to go to the WS? They went just two years ago. I think Mets are cooler any way. Plus this could the only chance for Delgado and the way he’s playing he should get a ring. Oh and wouldn’t that be “La cuisine du France” since cuisine is a feminine word.

  26. JMB on October 17th, 2006 6:26 pm

France has gone pretty well. I’ve been on a good dish the past two days — grilled skirt steak, sauce marchand de vin, pommes frittes, watercress salad — which helps. I even whipped up an extra project today (chicken and duck liver pate) just for fun. I’m on roasted leg of lamb tomorrow. Thursday and Friday we’ve got “the rest of Europe.” The fish and chips, served in a paper bag, tends to be very popular. I’m sous chef on Friday to close out the block.

All this talk of how Weaver is making himself all this money with his performance cracks me up. So two starts (one and a half, really) make everyone forget that he was so bad that the Angels released him earlier in the year? Geez.

    TWO RUNS IN!

  27. msb on October 17th, 2006 6:28 pm

but Dave Duncan has fixed him! Really!

man, skirt steak, wine sauce & pommes frittes sounds a whole lot better than pesto on (bought) raviolis.

and just how is Hendry getting Alex to Chicago? What does he have to trade?

  28. vj on October 17th, 2006 6:32 pm

    #23 what did Pujols do?

  29. msb on October 17th, 2006 6:34 pm

#27– nothing, really. 1st base got knocked askew, & the grounds crew had trouble getting it re-set.

  30. JMB on October 17th, 2006 6:36 pm

but Dave Duncan has fixed him! Really!

All the more reason to stay away. Unless he’s bringing Duncan with him. See: Wright, Jaret.

    #23 what did Pujols do?

    Well, he just homered.

  31. Josh on October 17th, 2006 6:40 pm

Just turned it on and saw LaRussa being interviewed. At least he honestly said that there may be scouts listening and the game’s still going. Can’t believe how ridiculous those interviews are.

  32. Josh on October 17th, 2006 6:42 pm

    Woot!

  33. Josh on October 17th, 2006 6:45 pm

“Yadier Molina hitting .500 this postseason with runners in scoring position.”

Why even say anything? Does he expect it will continue? Is he just trying to fill airtime? Does he want to impress fans with his knowledge?

It means nothing. Don’t recycle useless stats.

  34. joser on October 17th, 2006 7:01 pm

But those who worship in the House of Clutch know that BAwRISP is The Stat That Matters! Just ask Jeter!

  35. Mat on October 17th, 2006 7:05 pm

I don’t see how this is a bad LCS.

I guess that I would probably be entertained by a AA championship series that went the distance, so I’m certainly entertained by this series. However, I don’t get the feeling that either team is playing very good baseball, which brings down my enthusiasm for the games somewhat. So I’d have to consider this LCS something of a mixed bag.

  36. JI on October 17th, 2006 7:06 pm

But, but, I thought Glavine was A Proven Postseason Performer…

  37. JI on October 17th, 2006 7:08 pm

    Oh. My. God.

McCarver is right. A bunt would be a good idea here.

  38. adamt on October 17th, 2006 7:21 pm

Interesting that LoDuca didn’t even look to double up Edmonds at 1st. I think he had a shot. Belliard bailed him out.

  39. Mat on October 17th, 2006 7:31 pm

Interesting that LoDuca didn’t even look to double up Edmonds at 1st. I think he had a shot.

That’s always a somewhat risky play, though. If you mess up the throw, you’re looking at the runner on third scoring for sure, and quite possibly the runner from second, too. The run expectancy (this year, anyway) with bases loaded and two outs is less than a run–at about 0.8–so I think there’s a good case to be made for exercising caution in that circumstance.

  40. JI on October 17th, 2006 7:35 pm

Jeff Weaver = the new Derek Lowe

  41. adamt on October 17th, 2006 7:40 pm

    Duncan!

  42. PeterCampbell on October 17th, 2006 7:40 pm

And they said he couldn’t hit lefties. Go Cards!

  43. Mat on October 17th, 2006 7:42 pm

Jeff Weaver = the new Derek Lowe

    How do you figure?

  44. vj on October 17th, 2006 7:42 pm

Man, this looks bad for the Mets now. Glavine was there only “dependable” starter and here they are burning through the bullpen.

  45. vj on October 17th, 2006 7:43 pm

  46. JI on October 17th, 2006 7:46 pm

    42

Awful regular season, followed by playoff clutchness.

Probably won’t result in a $36m deal though.

As for Duncan, there’s no evidence that he *can’t* hit lefties. LaRussa hasn’t given him the opportunity thus far. He probably will get the chance if/when he learns to play acceptable OF defense.

  47. JI on October 17th, 2006 8:17 pm

You can’t keep Wright down forever. He’s not A-Rod.

  48. DMZ on October 17th, 2006 8:47 pm

    Owwww.

I still think the Cardinals are going to be easier prey for the Tigers, but watching a game like this, I wonder.

  49. JI on October 17th, 2006 8:51 pm

Well as long as Weaver continues not to suck they have a chance.

  50. DMZ on October 17th, 2006 9:12 pm

He’s Jeff Weaver, how likely is that?

  51. JI on October 17th, 2006 9:21 pm

    Not bloody likely.

Assuming all goes well, going back to Comerica oughta screw with his head.

  52. colm on October 18th, 2006 12:00 am

Tigers vs Cardinals is the better name matchup. It paints a much more enjoyable picture in my mind.

I know the St Louis team is named after the bird, but I prefer to think of them as a bunch of aging Catholic clergymen dressed in red trying, using their ornamental croziers to fend off a hoard of Siberian cats.

Cardinals vs Padres is always the hoped for clerical matchup in the NL. Padres or Cardinals vs Angels would be an interesting World Series, with some seriously metaphysical ramifications.

    Other vividly imagined matchups:
Giants vs Pirates? Marlins vs Mariners?
Football has some of the best: Redskins vs Cowboys is the classic; Bears vs Dolphins is just messy to think about.

  53. mln on October 18th, 2006 6:10 am

How many people are looking forward to a WS matchup between Jeff Weaver and Kenny Rogers? Two former post-season choke artists turned post-season “aces”?

Plus, we get to see more of Scott Spiezo and his facial hair!

  54. Bryan on October 18th, 2006 7:52 am

The Cards need to clinch tonight or the series is done. With Carpenter on the bump and an extra day’s rest, he should be dealing (if he can get out of the 1st inning without incident). I can’t fathom rooting against the Cardinals – Pujols is one of the few players I would pay large amounts of legal tender to watch in person. I saw him at RFK against the pathetic Nats last month. Pedro Astacio made the mistake of throwing a 3-2 curve right in Albert’s wheelhouse and he put a coat on that hanger – a laser job off the facade of the upper deck, which in RFK is no easy task.

Long story short, week or two more of watching Pujols > any alternative. Plus the Cards have the best fans in baseball and it would be great to see the new Busch rock in October the way it did last night.

    Go Cards

  55. Brian Rust on October 18th, 2006 8:14 am

I never knew they were hoarding cats in Siberia.

  56. msb on October 18th, 2006 8:27 am

yes, it’s a sad story, the scarcity of Siberian Felines.

  57. joser on October 18th, 2006 11:37 am

They have plenty in Siberia, to keep them warm on the long, cold winter nights. It’s the rest of us who have to do without, because of all the hoarding in the Russian far east. They’re like the Panthera Tigris OPEC. Damn Siberian feline hoarders! I want my enormous, man-eating cat! You have so many, and I need only one…

  58. Karen on October 18th, 2006 5:14 pm

Did any of you see the fan in the stands last night with the fake red soulpatch? It looked like a crayoned address label trimmed to size.

    Shades of Apolo Anton Ohno…
