M’s minor league transactions: Nageotte gone

DMZ · October 29, 2006 at 4:03 pm · Filed Under Mariners

From Baseball America, in a long list of recent transactions you’ll find this:

Seattle Mariners
Released IF Dean Zorn
Released LHP Jose Suriel
Released OF Donato Ruiz
Released RHP Juan Colon
RHP Clint Nageotte declared minor league free agent

I once argued that Nageotte should be included on the Baseball Prospectus top prospect list. My basic argument was “his stuff is electric, if he improves his control a little he’ll be amazing.” Nageotte didn’t improve his control enough, and he never got that change-up down. Now he’s a minor league free agent, and I’ll bet the M’s aren’t crying over it.

Jason adds, Here’s the full list of the club’s minor league free agents:

C Omar Falcon
C Luis Oliveros
C Guillermo Quiroz
2B Jason Bourgeois
2B Ismael Castro
SS Scott Youngbauer
RHP Scott Atchison
RHP Cibney Bello
RHP Rich Dorman
RHP Jared Eichelberger
RHP Mike Flannery
RHP Jeff Harris
RHP Justin Huisman
RHP Aaron Looper
RHP Natanael Mateo
RHP Clint Nageotte

This frees up a spot on the 40-man roster, does it not?

He had already been outrighted off like 3 days after the end of the season along with Renee Cortez.

    No losses here.

No more Dean Zorn? I feel like he’s been in the organization forever, even though it’s only been 2 short years.

I went to an Aquasox game and a female friend of mine pointed out that Dean Zorn is “a cutie”.

Amazing how much Nageotte’s ascencion as a prospect and decline as a player mirrors that of Clint Zavaras. The Clint Curse?

I’d say his arm was messed up for much of the year.

He was using a two-seamer on opening day, and managed to hold the other guys to just a pair of walks while striking out four. The slider wasn’t in its old state, but it still looked good enough to keep guys off balance. I thought he was going to turn it around.

Then his arm started acting up, he went back to the four-seam, and without the extra action on the slider, he started to get hit hard.

I’m guessing that he finally did screw up his elbow enough to where he can’t easily pitch anymore, and probably needs surgery, but that probably wouldn’t go over so well.

The M’s might not be crying over it (and they shouldn’t be), but is there any realistic chance that Nageotte finds a different pitching coach and finally figures out a way to throw strikes (ala Matt Thornton)? And what happened to all of his strikeouts this year?

See above. It’s not a coaching issue, Clint’s arm is hurt and probably done for.

Hmm, Dean Zorn was one of my workmates two Aquasox boarders this year.

    Nice guy, apparently.

Oh well he wasn’t exactly Cy Young or Walter Johnson.

  12. dw on October 29th, 2006 5:49 pm

He wasn’t exactly a major league pitcher, either.

It’s always hard to see a once promising career pretty much end. Maybe someone or something can turn him around, but I don’t think that will happen.

    RHP Aaron Looper

Can he stay gone this time?

  15. David J. Corcoran I on October 29th, 2006 8:43 pm

Please let Flannery and Mateo re-sign just so we can say that we got something for Olivo, and we still have the full Villone trade.

Isn’t Nageotte’s arm allegedly a time-bomb at this point anyway?

Also, Jeff Harris is being stretched out in winter ball. Could be perhaps be back, if not in Seattle then in Tacoma, as a starter? Or does he perhaps catch on with another club? He’s no great shakes but he’s a touch or three above Joel on the usefulness meter.

Whoa – Quiroz. He’s fallen a long way.

  18. JMB on October 30th, 2006 12:02 pm

Yeah, Quiroz is on the “cover” of BA’s “minors” page, with a caption something like, “Former top prospect Guillermo Quiroz is now a minor league free agent.”

    Is Scott Atchison useless?
