Yes, but he brings so much energy to the ball club with his hustle and grit. How can you possibly measure that?
Should you throw a shadow line on there denoting his leadership abilities
On the WFB Poll does the runs take into account his base running errors?
What about scrappiness? He must be off the scale in that.
I think we’ve found the t-shirt: this graph with Ignitor! in flames above it and the poll results with Gritty! on the back. Thanks for this, I needed to laugh out loud this morning.
Ballgame Factor (a.k.a. grittiniess/scrappiness) = (AL OPS / WFB OPS) * [(Game-Ending Ks + Diving Near-Catches + Dirtied Unis + Caught Stealing + Positions Played + Hargrove Tongue Bathings + Rizzs Tonge Bathings) / 162] + {[PA – (BB² + H + 2B + 3B + HR³)] / 162} + (Team Losses / 162)
Unfortunately, due to the unappreciated nature of the metric, not all stats have been accurately recorded over the years. Yet, we firmly believe there can be but one true King of Grit.
This makes me ill.
This seems to indicate that the few the at-bats for WFB, the better the result.
I drove by Safeco the other day and while sitting at the light saw that ‘Willie’ has his own photo mural, or whatever they are called. THis is just plain stupid. It’s too bad you can’t post this graph next it. With this going on and Hargrove here STILL, I’m actually glad to be leaving Seattle soon(ish). THe Mariners will always be my team but right now this is just plain embarassing. By the way, isn’t it true that Willie is married to the niece of Howard Lincoln, or is this just urban myth?
9 – Yes, and Ayala was Piniella’s godson.
#10– no, he married Lou’s niece….
#10– no, he married Lou’s niece….
I don’t much like these intra-club relations.
I applaud Willie’s consistency. It’s no wonder they gave him that nice contract. He’s not the type to suddenly have a performance spike during the contract year, then coast the rest of the time. Nope, he sucks pretty much all the time, very predictably. No such blips on this radar screen. The M’s were wise to reward such a knowable quantity, with so much uncertainty (and risk!) involved in choosing other players. In fact when you take his consistency into account, it looks like they got the Grit and Scrappiness at a serious market discount.
I’m not sure why DMZ should ever bother with sentences again, since he has lately demonstrated the ability to convey all essential information using the graph format.
We should also track the # of WFB references from the local media (Fox Sports Net, Seattle Times & PI, KJR, post-game call-in shows, etc.). This could prove that Willie is the most overrated, overexposed player (relative to one’s skill set) in MLB history.
Could we also graph the OPS from NL pitchers? That could be amusing.
I assume the 1.100 that he hit was right after the Grand Slam to start his career?
You’re thinking of Dobbs.
You sure? I remember Willie hitting a GS early in his career.
okay, it wasn’t to start his career.
Has anybody seen his Wikipedia page? quite humourous.
“William Paul (“Willie”, “Wee Willie”, “Ballgame”, “The Ignitor”, “Effin”, “WFB”, “WMFB”, “The Spork”, “Princess Willie”[1]) Bloomquist”
“1.^ All nicknames are those used passionately by various Mariner fans.”
Damn straight they are.
You know how writers and broadcasters are always harping on players about being consistent? Look at that first graph! That’s valuable, baby!
hmmm….interesting
The spike in Bloomquest AB’s corresponds almost exactly to the drop off in NL pitcher OPS. Clearly, the NL pitchers became despondent about their own lack of hustle after watching Willie bat.
Ow! That graph ignited my monitor!
The real sad thing is that TWENTY PERCENT of USSM readers, that’s people smart enough to figure out the series of tubes and read and digest this site, think that WFB contributes over TWENTY RUNS A YEAR with his grit.
That’s pathetic. I think we should get a list of the usernames that voted on that poll and how they voted. Then we’ll know who thinks that 8 meaningful stolen bases and Rick Rizzs having a joygasm every time you step on the field is worth over twenty runs a year.
I think they’re joking.
24: I’d guess that those votes are heavily laced with snarkiness.
Yes, we *think* they’re joking. But really, is it too hard to believe that they’re not? These are Mariner fans after all.
hey!
My vote was totally not in jest. Being a Mariners fan makes you appreciate all things gritty.
I wonder how many wins gritty broadcaster toupes and hair plugs give us each year.
Not to mention gritty mascot antics.
I voted for 20+ Runs. I was kidding.
