More details on the John Thomson contract: it’s 500k guaranteed, but he gets $1.5m if he makes the Opening Day roster and it could go as high as $4m. Also, he slagged Paul Lo Duca as being one of the reasons he didn’t want to go to New York.

Mark Mulder re-signed with the Cardinals, getting $13m over 2 years.

They also signed RYAN FRANKLIN to a one year, $1m deal. If you remember, when Franklin signed with the Phillies, we laughed it up – it was a spectacularly bad fit for them and for Franklin, who to be decent needs a spacious park and a good outfield defense. It was a clear case where he took a big one-time payout over a more modest contract somewhere that might have made him look better and allowed him to collect more money for longer… and look! It happened! Even Joel Pineiro got $4m from the Red Sox, and he pitched all season with a giant fork sticking out of his back.

i saw that signing and couldn’t believe it…250 million for a soccer player? does anyone even watch soccer if it’s not the world cup?

A lot of that 250 million will come from endorsement deals that Beckham already had lined up. MLS and Galaxy are not paying him that much in salary.

In 2005, his first full season in Seattle after his monster 48-homer, 121-RBI season in 2004 with the Dodgers, Beltre struggled to adapt to American League pitching. He hit just .255 with 19 home runs and 87 RBIs.

How many partial seasons did he have between 2004 and 2005? How many of them were in Seattle?

#52: Soccer (football) is tremendously popular all across the world. Much like we talk about the marketing in Japan for Ichiro or Matsuzaka, I’m guessing MLS looks at this signing the same way.

I wrote that last post kind of bass-ackward didn’t I? Sounded a bit like Yoda!

There was a poll on ESPN about the signing and 70+ percent said they are more interested in MLS now that he’s signed…so thats an expensive, but potentially league saving, signing.

44 “The Mariners should be grateful Zito didn’t go for it. That would have destroyed the franchise for years to come.”

    Worse than last every year?

totally off subject…and even sport…but does anyone care about Barbaro? it’s a freakin horse…they get put down everyday…are we supposed to care because he ran in races? sick ot the coverage…

  11. Thingray on January 11th, 2007 1:32 pm

Save him if you can… Everybody deserves a chance to be put out to stud!

How these Barbaro posts are getting deleted is beyond me.

I think the M’s should have signed Beckham…I would pay to watch that.

Check that, how those Barbaro posts AREN’T getting deleted.

The Mariners already have enough mediocre one-dimensional players, they don’t need to add one that costs more than A-Rod as well.

Maybe they should sign Barbaro. If he comes back healthy, he would be the fastest thing in the outfield. He’d be a stud.

    -65

That sounds like a big risk given his history of injuries. However might be a safer bet than giving Mulder up to 15 mil a year.

this is all from KOMO so far…

“KOMO’s Program Director Dennis Kelly said, “We’re very proud of Mike for taking this additional step in his Mariners broadcasting career. We’re happy for him for the expansion of his career, and happy for KOMO because Mike remains an important part of our Mariners broadcasts on the radio.””

nice little honor for Buck O’Neil … esp. since there is nothing from the Veteran’s Committee

  21. eric on January 11th, 2007 4:08 pm

    Ralph in 13.

That is kind of the point. If Thomson is hurt and doesn’t play the whole season he ends up costing the Blue Jays peanuts. If Ramirez does the same the Ms are still out several mil and Soriano.

    #45: Both.
