Doesn’t it look like he is rolling his right ankle in the picture?

  3. adamt on March 12th, 2007 2:07 pm

    Doyle!!!!!

Any chance he makes the club? For whatever reason, they seem(ed) really high on Escobar and Logan. They also acquired roughly 337 different veterans and minor league free agents.

  4. Adam S on March 12th, 2007 2:10 pm

Yes. He’s out of options, which is why the M’s traded him in the first place, so if the Nationals don’t keep him on the roster, they have to subject him to waivers or trade him.

I know spring training stats don’t matter, but if you’re competing for a job 300/400/500 can’t hurt.

  5. DMZ on March 12th, 2007 2:29 pm

The M’s didn’t trade him because he was out of options. Come on.

  6. Thingray on March 12th, 2007 2:35 pm

You don’t think that had anything to do with the trade? Wouldn’t he have been less likely to be dealt if he still had options left?

I’m not disagreeing with you, I’m just asking.

Logan is a Bloomquist level hitter. Even though he’ll play center, it’s sad that he’ll be getting so many ABs.

  8. DMZ on March 12th, 2007 2:53 pm

I’m not saying it might not have played a part, but there’s no way the team’s primary motivation was “he’s out of options”.

  9. carcinogen on March 12th, 2007 2:53 pm

    Good on ya, Doyle!

  10. terry on March 12th, 2007 2:54 pm

Bowden had to about wet his pants when the final terms of that trade were agreed upon…. two cheap probably useful guys in exchange for someone whose contract you’ve fantasized about jettisoning….

It’s deals like this one that equal job security for Bowden even if the Nats lose 95 games….

“Citing a need to improve the defense, which was one of the worst in the National League [in 2006], Acta said that Nook Logan will enter Spring Training as the everyday center fielder. Logan was a pleasant surprise after he was acquired from the Tigers on Sept. 1. He played sparkling defense and was 27-for-90 (.300) with a home run and eight RBIs in 27 games.”

Thanks, Derek. Now I want to cry.

  13. msb on March 12th, 2007 3:02 pm

but, hey, Richie got a hit today.

  14. Thingray on March 12th, 2007 3:10 pm

#8: I agree there was no way it was the primary motivation, but if he still had options it may have been different (even with his injuries).

I have read quite a few interviews with Doyle recently, and it seems like in every one of them, he says that his knee isn’t 100%, and probably never will be. I wonder if that was part of the reason they were willing to part with him?

  15. PositivePaul on March 12th, 2007 3:19 pm

I wonder if that was part of the reason they were willing to part with him?

When we were grillin’ Bavasi at FanFest, it really seemed like that was something that Bavasi seemed to be able to justify why he’d let Snelling go. Bavasi explained that Doyle’s swing was very much affected by the knee brace, but admitted it was a trade that very likely could come back to bite the M’s…

Take a look at his minor league numbers to get an idea of if he’ll keep that up.

  17. Thingray on March 12th, 2007 3:25 pm

It will be a real shame if his knee injuries keep him from ever becoming a full-time player.

I raise a toast to Doyle, whatever his future may bring.

  18. carcinogen on March 12th, 2007 3:29 pm

His knee will affect his hitting, post Ms, as Randy Johnson’s back affected his hitting, post Ms.

DOH…I meant pitching…dang it, can’t even pull of a joke in the forums.

  20. DMZ on March 12th, 2007 3:42 pm

    Forums?

  21. Thingray on March 12th, 2007 3:49 pm

I hope so for Doyle’s sake, and I hope not for the M’s sake. I just wonder how many more chances he will get if he doesn’t win a full time spot soon, since he doesn’t have the “flashy” power stats. Once you fall off the radar as a “prospect”, it can be tough to get a chance afterwards.

It almost seems like if you’re not a full time starter by the time you’re 21, you don’t get a fair shake. I know that’s not entirely true, but there are so many Miguel Cabreras, Albert Pujols, Grady Sizemores, etc…

I guess I’m just rambling because I’m still sad to see him go.

  22. Josh on March 12th, 2007 3:52 pm

Hey, where is my private message inbox? Where are the mods?

I say good for Doyle. If for whatever reason he were put on waivers and/or traded, I don’t think it would be too helpful for him in getting situated, what with finding himself on a third team in a matter of months. Here’s to hoping he sticks with the team and gets a good look, then crushes the ball for 6 months. May he produce more for Washington in this year than Vidro will the rest of his career.

No, I don’t feel wrong in saying that. I don’t wish any ill against the M’s (except the next time Snelling plays against them). I just hope it gets thrown in the ownership’s face time and time again.

[# 10] : Bowden had to about wet his pants when the final terms of that trade were agreed upon…. two cheap probably useful guys in exchange for someone whose contract you’ve fantasized about jettisoning….

Sounds familiar. Wasn’t that the exact scenario some years ago when Dan Duquette was about to jettison Slocumb, and we gave him Lowe and Varitek?

BTW, the ERA of M Starting Pitchers over the last nine starts–after Felix’s four shutout innings today-is 1.04.
    And Sherill got the Win.

  24. Evan on March 12th, 2007 3:52 pm

    Would you prefer fora?

  25. zzyzx on March 12th, 2007 3:55 pm

Speaking of spring training games, I love how Sherrill got the win today by coming in and giving up a 4 run 8th, only to have the M’s retake the lead in the bottom half…

  26. Abodacious on March 12th, 2007 4:27 pm

Maybe Sherrill is competing for Mateo’s role . . .

I know what Derek meant; this is a blog with comments, not a forum, but speaking very generically “forum” works, as it is a venue for public comment.

  29. The Unknown Comic on March 12th, 2007 5:06 pm

    fo·rum (fôr’É™m, fōr’-) Pronunciation Key
    n. pl. fo·rums also fo·ra (fôr’É™, fōr’É™)

    1.

    a. The public square or marketplace of an ancient Roman city that was the assembly place for judicial activity and public business.
    b. A public meeting place for open discussion.
    c. A medium for open discussion or voicing of ideas, such as a newspaper, a radio or television program, or a website.

    2. A public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation.

3.A court of law; a tribunal.

I don’t know if the commentary section of this blog technically is a medium for open discussion of ideas but it does seem to at least fit some of the criteria of a public meeting or presentation involving a discussion usually among experts and often including audience participation. It may not actually be a forum and I admit I am just plain stupid to begin with but personally I can see how someone could refer to this as a forum but that’s just me.

  30. DMZ on March 12th, 2007 5:18 pm

I was making the same point as I do about calling USSM a “board” – we’re not a vBulletin site, is all. There wasn’t a fine semantic point I was trying to make.

  31. The Unknown Comic on March 12th, 2007 5:51 pm

Sorry, I hijacked the commentary section of this blog article. 🙂 Now I will leave you alone and you all can continue discussing the trials and tribulations of Doyle.

  32. joealb on March 12th, 2007 7:52 pm

Most of you guy know that I don’t comment very often and when I do I try to add something to the conversation but this tinme I just can’t help myself, I WANT MY DOYLE BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. Choska on March 12th, 2007 8:07 pm

What’s frustrating is that, if Snelling get the full time gig in DC and plays like we all think he will, the local rags will neglect to mention the Snelling trade except in passing.

And maybe that is the most frustrating thing of all. Snelling could make the All Star team for the next 10 years straight on his way to Cooperstown, and the local rags will never speak ill of the Mariners. You see, they value access and back slapping from the Ms front office more than they value telling the truth to their readers.

  34. carcinogen on March 12th, 2007 8:22 pm

I’d like to thank everyone for defending my use of the word “forums.” Sorry Derek, I know that this is a blog with comments…forgive my slip of the keys.

The M’s didn’t trade him because he was out of options. Come on.
Miscommunication between my fingers and my brain. I couldn’t decide between “part of why” and “claimed to have traded” and typed neither.

They traded him because they’re stupid, i.e., they believe Vidro will be a better hitter this year. But the party line is certainly that they didn’t believe there was a spot for him on the major league roster and he was out of options.

  37. em on March 12th, 2007 9:34 pm

Perry at foxsports.com has an amazingly succinct Mariner preview. He uses pretty words like “leage average” performance, hopeful projections, Cy Young caliber, the rest of the division sucks ass…etc.

In short, the M’s are better by accident (err…in spite of Bavasi; maybe in spite of Hargrove), but that might be good enough. Perry isn’t perfect, but I think he steals from USSM to write his articles for the grossly uninformed…

  38. DMZ on March 12th, 2007 9:59 pm

I can’t believe this, of all threads, is going off-topic. If we don’t respect Doyle threads, what do we have left?

  39. em on March 12th, 2007 10:02 pm

Nothing off topic about my post. I should have made the connection: Perry overtly implies that the Vidro trade was made worse by the fact that Snelling would have been more of an upgrade.

  40. em on March 12th, 2007 10:05 pm

Not sure what happend to my last quote (victim of the cyberspace phantom):

But the gist of it is that the Perry article is most interesting because a national pundit proclaims Snelling would have been more of a DH upgrade than Vidro.

Can someone make a half-Seattle, half-Washington Doyle jersey? I’d feel a little better knowing he played for the Seationals.

No. Thou shalt not worship Doyle in the manner of Laura Quinn.

Doyle. I miss him. I hope he kicks serious ass for the Nats (or whoever he winds up PLAYING and not just being a bench guy for).
