Is there any way (other than injury) that allows any other catcher to make the team other than Rivera?
Does abduction count as injury?
i’ve been praying for burke…can catch and play first…and can hit…keeping my fingers crossed…SEND RENE DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!
well, fwiw, Dave Andriesen in the PI this weekend: “If Burke can hit – in the early going he’s batting .444 – there’s a decent chance the Oregon State University product will beat out Rivera for the backup job coming out of camp.”
Oliveros didn’t have a prayer of making this team anyway. He was always destined for Tacoma.
Any word on exactly how terrible Tuiasosopo looked?
I would assume that since Burke is not on the 40 man, he will have to outperform Rivera by a fairly hefty margin to make the FO DFA someone to create a space. The M’s might do just that (and I hope they do), but Burke will have to demonstrate that he is clearly preferable to Rivera.
I would guess that “Tui” did not look as terrible as Parque, if that serves as any consolation to the “Woodinville native.”
Parque? I can’t believe he’s not better.
thenkyew! I’ll be here all week!
When the final cuts are made, Hargrove will have to decide between a 7th reliever and a 5th reserve; and we don’t expect quality to enter into the decision.
BTW,One could more easily select a better 5-man bench than a 7-man relief corps.
How much say (if any) does the GM have in the decision to keep 7 relievers or a 5-man bench?
See here, elsewhere. Which is weird, since I know you’ve read threads where we talked about this because you’re in the comments.

I understood the decision process as far as free agents, and who gets called up from the minors mid-season, but I wasn’t sure if it varied at all for decisions made at the end of camp.
Apparently it doesn’t.
It probably wouldn’t matter, because Hargrove isn’t a big fan of using the bench other than WFB anyway (Petagine-2006).
I see Hargrove taking 8 relievers and a 3-man bench before 6 and 5, respectively. Seriously. Still, even that’s probably a 0.1% chance. It will likely be 7 and 4.
Real waste of a spot. If you count Bloomquist and Rivera, then 3 spots. Must be fun to compete with two total wastes of spaces which are not only not being used, but being used to hurt you. Then there’s the 7th reliever who will perhaps once in the year end up affecting a game. Unless all the non-closer relievers are just being rotated, in which case it’s nice to know that innings aren’t being distributed according to talent.
Where is Brooks Kieshnick? The M’s could have a 7 man bullpen AND a 5 man bench. Granted that the 7th guy in the pen and the 5th guy off the bench would both suck. That’s actually not all that different from right now, though.
Since Lowe will be on the DL when the season starts as will Jimenez, can’t Burke be promoted to the 40 man without DFA’ing anybody?
Jamie Burke for Backup Catcher!
What about Javy Lopez? Could we get him for cheap?
lopez has said that he a) won’t play in the AL because he wants to catch and not have an AL team be tempted to play him at DH and b) he will only consider being a backup for Atlanta…he’ll just retire if he can’t start at C…
he’s done anyway…
we want BURKE!!!!!!!!
Does anything suggest Foppert is not done and gone?
It says something about your defense if you’re worried about playing for AL teams, where they’ll be so tempted to play you at DH that… hee hee hee hee
Hey, I hear Alay Soler is available.
Well, not really. We’re flying the heck out of here on Saturday.

Hey, where’s that George Herman Ruth guy? I hear he knew a little about pitch and hit. He’s a real veteran, Hargrove would love him. Of course that means he wouldn’t be on the bench anyway. Still, Hargrove probably would have benched him for the first 15 years of his career.
You know, obliterating the home run record and posting a 256 OPS+ just aren’t quite good enough unless you’re a vet.
Anachronisms are fun though.
Jim Parque’s Blog provides his perspective on the past 6 or so weeks. (Read from bottom to top for chronological order).
I haven’t been following him in particular, but does anyone have any sense of what Foppert’s long term prospects are with the big club?
Batboy?
Talked to Will Leitch today about blogging and Deadspin and USSM.
This has nothing to do with cuts. It does have a lot to do with me having way too many gin and tonics.
that’s right! Congrats to Jason on graduating and getting a swell job in a fancy-schmancy neighborhood!!!!
My two takes for this thread, having just returned from Peoria:
1. Every time I saw Matt T., Pentland was right next to him. He had more extra batting practice than anyone. He is getting tons of support, but he just looks confused at the plate (even in batting practice.)
I never saw him play as a high schooler, but I am guessing he has some tremendous talent to get drafted. Right now he just needs to go to class A and play every day and see if he can perform.
2. Jamie Burke was 6 for 13 in limited action. Rene is a young guy who needs to play every day. Kenji is going to get 135+ games and Rene is too young of a player and not a good enough hitter to take that position. Clement is probably ahead of Rene right now.]
Although Jim Street says Jamie will be in Tacoma, and Rene got a spot on the all telling Mariner Commercials, I say go with Jamie Burke.
With Arthur and Jamie, the 40 man roster moves are going to get interesting.
