First televised game of 2007 thread of awesomeness

DMZ · March 15, 2007 at 2:47 pm · Filed Under Game Threads

Wooooo! M’s on television! Yayyy! I’m so excited I’m posting hours early!

Rumored M’s lineup, from the Times blog:

CF-L Ichiro
3B-R Adrian Beltre
DH-B Jose Vidro
LF-L Raul Ibanez
1B-R Richie Sexson
RF-R Mike Morse
C-R Jeff Clement
2B-R Jose Lopez
SS-R Yuniesky Betancourt

For the Giants: some guys. Who cares.

Edit: Also, Dave’s at the game, so if you see someone throwing rocks at Jose Vidro in the background, that’s probably me. Will have notes up late tonight. Brandon Morrow looked awesome in Mesa today, by the way.

From the Times blog:

Good thing the Cubs can fold their laundry and have a packed stadium come to watch, otherwise, the M’s would have some explaining to do

Hee hee hee.

Who is pitching? I can’t seem to find out from MLB.com…

  2. Mr. Egaas on March 15th, 2007 3:01 pm

    Jeff Clement — oooohh.
    Morse in RF — ewwww.

  3. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 3:08 pm

I am super happy to get to see Clement play – I missed him in Tacoma last year.

  4. daimajin on March 15th, 2007 3:12 pm

I just got tickets for the Mar 24 game vs. KC
12 of us are going from Eugene, OR, Driving to Phoenix.

  5. Brent Overman on March 15th, 2007 3:14 pm

Is anyone planning a Ken Griffey Jr welcome home group? I see Cincy’s coming to Seattle for the first time since interleague play began. Hopefully he’s healthy…

  6. rick m on March 15th, 2007 3:26 pm

Will we see Leone at 3rd perhaps?

Too much on TV tonight! Zags-Mariners-The Office (will Jim get pummeled?) My DVR is already choking because of Smallville!

  7. Johan Garpenlov on March 15th, 2007 3:41 pm

    Clement playing is exciting news.

    Weaver is pitching, #1.

  8. phildopip1 on March 15th, 2007 3:44 pm

The Office is a rerun tonight, Rick. It’s an hour long (because they’re including deleted scenes), but it’s still a rerun.

  9. Johan Garpenlov on March 15th, 2007 3:45 pm

I own this Clement card. Not graded though. One of my favorites, although I don’t own many cards these days so the competition isn’t fierce.

  10. IP on March 15th, 2007 4:00 pm

Is it in HD? Please, please, pretty please….

    RE 1.

    I think its Weaver starting.

  13. Thom Jimsen on March 15th, 2007 4:19 pm

The Giants are worth watching if for no other reason than the last-spot-on-the-roster scrap between Central Kitsap grad Todd Linden and South Kitsap grad (and Willie Bloomquist best friend) Jason Ellison.

Which would win a battle to the death, a cougar or a wolf?

  14. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 4:29 pm

We should trade Ichiro! for them.

  15. msb on March 15th, 2007 4:35 pm

    Hopefully he’s healthy…

well, he’ll have had the start of April to rest up for the rest of the season…

in an aside, Bowie Kuhn has died

  16. Thom Jimsen on March 15th, 2007 4:39 pm

Alas. The last commissioner with a nutsack, excepting the brief tenure of Paul Giamatti’s pop.

Damned if there aren’t any Northern Kitsap or Eastern Kitsap grads to really stoke ‘em rivalry flames.

Nah, they probably all became band geeks and got their college degrees at the University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople…

  18. msb on March 15th, 2007 4:55 pm

Los Dos Barrys played this afternoon, so starting for the Giants (to stretch him out, sez Bochy) is Jonathan Sanchez, fronting what sounds like the equivilent of the team the Ms sent to HoHoKom

and Baker is back, & blogging

  19. nullptr on March 15th, 2007 4:58 pm

The game is at 7:00 PM on FSN, for those who didn’t know.

  20. B_Con on March 15th, 2007 5:02 pm

Hey, maybe we’ll get to see our woulda-coulda-shoulda-picked-with-the-fifth-pick-pick Tim Lincecum strike out 5 M’s while Brandon “has a good body” Morrow ices his elbow after his 5th SCORELESS INNING!

  21. phildopip1 on March 15th, 2007 5:08 pm

    CK (Central Kitsap) REPRESENT!!!

  22. Thom Jimsen on March 15th, 2007 5:10 pm

And Linden went deep earlier today.

Nah, they probably all became band geeks and got their college degrees at the University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople…

Wait….is that an actual school or did you listen to that PDQ Bach CD enough to remember that? I thought I was the only person in the world that owned that….although I seem to have misplaced it now.

  24. Thom Jimsen on March 15th, 2007 5:34 pm

Actually, they matriculate at Saskatchewan State.

Okay, I’m excited. No poker game for me tonight. I’m actually going to stay home and watch the Ms game, which is something I suppose, nearing some sort of first step in forgiveness after the Carl Everett signing debacle. then again, given the Doyle trade, I’m not sure I should be taking that first step.

But…baseball. I miss it too much to not watch.

And I’ve even ponied up for tix to the Edgar (Mariners) HOF game and yes, the first game Cincy plays in Safeco, on the outside chance Junior is there.

  28. Thom Jimsen on March 15th, 2007 6:03 pm

I haven’t forgiven. Or forgotten. I won’t be watching, listening to or attending any games until the cheese puffs in charge are crushed into dust under the couch cushions of competitive imbalance.

  29. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:08 pm

    JEFFFFFFFFFFFF WEAVER
    (wa wa wa wa wa)
    He’s just a guy… who doesn’t pitch that wellllllllll

  30. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:09 pm

    “Bobby Bonds”
    “Jake Weaver”

Great to hear you again, Niehaus.

  31. zzyzx on March 15th, 2007 6:09 pm

“Bobby Bonds?” Come on Dave, you’re not that old to not remember Barry’s name.

  32. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:10 pm

Niehaus is soooooooooooooooooo drunk. This is hilarious

  33. Thom Jimsen on March 15th, 2007 6:12 pm

Other Niehaus non de plumes we can expect this season:

    — “Tony Batista”
    — “Chita Rivera”
    — “Rafael Betancourt”
    — “Alan Jones”
    — “Horacio Sanz”

  34. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:15 pm

Man. That ball needed to file a flight plan before it took off.

  35. DanO on March 15th, 2007 6:15 pm

That was a mighty fat pitch.

  36. Oly Rainiers Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:16 pm

okay, so maybe that first step of forgiveness was too large a step to attempt. hmmm, 2 runs in top of 1st….

  37. argh on March 15th, 2007 6:16 pm

That was a mighty fat pitch.

  39. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:19 pm

    Niehaus loves the commercials.

  40. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:20 pm

“The M’s annually win awards with their commercials”

    Just not pennants or trophies

  41. Oly Rainiers Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:20 pm

so, maybe the front office thinks they’re supposed to be competitive about the commercials….not the actual on-field play?

  42. zzyzx on March 15th, 2007 6:21 pm

What the heck kind of hats are the Giants wearing? I’ve never seen stylized G’s on their heads.

  43. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:21 pm

    Who’s doing color?

  44. msb on March 15th, 2007 6:21 pm

you know the old saying, you don’t dare fall behind to Pedro Feliz

oh, and I believe it is an annual occurance, and has been for many years to have at least one “Bobby Bonds” out of Dave, and occasionally a shout out to others, such as the yearly “Diego Segui” for David during ‘98-99.

  45. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:22 pm

Vidro came from the Montreal/Washington organization, which is the same organization.

    hee hee hee

  46. billT on March 15th, 2007 6:23 pm

    Blowers is doing color.

  47. msb on March 15th, 2007 6:23 pm

Blowers is doing color on tv; I haven’t turned on the radio, being afeard of getting a Rizzs OD too early.

  48. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:23 pm

That was possibly the worst explanation why a transition from the field to DH is hard I’ve ever heard.

Ahhhhhhhhh, it’s nice to be bitching about this stuff again. Soon I’ll be too annoyed to watch with the sound on.

  49. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:23 pm

“Good to see Edgar… actually, I didn’t see him”

  50. DanO on March 15th, 2007 6:23 pm

42: The Giants have been wearing those “G” caps during spring training and batting practice for a few years now.

Also, their uniforms have been getting progressively darker and uglier. The black-on-black with orange trim that they’re wearing tonight is particularly appalling…

  51. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:24 pm

It’s Blowers? He’s made a bunch of comments so far that seem to show that he hasn’t followed any baseball at all this spring.

  52. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 6:24 pm

Neihaus is becoming the new Yogi Berra.

  53. zzyzx on March 15th, 2007 6:25 pm

“Soon I’ll be too annoyed to watch with the sound on.”

Yep, then comes the time of just following the game threads for an inning or two.

…bases loaded, one out, how much you bet we don’t score.

  54. zzyzx on March 15th, 2007 6:26 pm

Infield fly. Bases loaded two outs…

  55. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 6:26 pm

    A TOWERING pop-up.

I’m glad it wasn’t a lazy pop-up, cause those are worse.

  56. Oly Rainiers Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:26 pm

there is a natural progression, isn’t there?

  57. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 6:27 pm

Would Willie Bloomquist hit a scrappy pop-up?

  58. zzyzx on March 15th, 2007 6:27 pm

Strike out… Here we go again…

  59. billT on March 15th, 2007 6:27 pm

    Same old mariners…

  60. Oly Rainiers Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:28 pm

there it was, the tagline for this years’ season…

‘a threat, but that was all’.

  61. argh on March 15th, 2007 6:28 pm

The look on Morse’s face with that strikeout was pure ‘Crap, I’m back in Tacoma again’.

  62. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:29 pm

Cripes, I didn’t realize that the Giants’ pitcher was Sanchez. Stupid Mariners, not trading Sexson for him.

  63. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 6:30 pm

Three of those bobble”heads” look exactly the same.

  64. billT on March 15th, 2007 6:30 pm

    That was Clement, not Morse.

  65. argh on March 15th, 2007 6:31 pm

The first ‘can of corn’ for the 2007 season. Warms my heart, just to hear it.

  66. argh on March 15th, 2007 6:32 pm

Whoops. Kids all look the same to me.

  67. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:32 pm

These spring training crowds sure do clap a lot.

  68. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:34 pm

It’s been so long since I saw so many truck commercials.

  69. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:35 pm

Hey, they’re already trying to get us used to missing the first pitch! It’s spring training for viewers, too!

  70. zzyzx on March 15th, 2007 6:35 pm

“My oh my” as a tagline is a sign that they’re not even trying anymore.

  71. msb on March 15th, 2007 6:36 pm

iirc, Blowers showed up at the end of last week, so he may well be catching up on everything. I haven’t been paying close attention, as I found Rizzs was talking to Bob Fontaine on the radio side

  72. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 6:38 pm

Can you blame Blowers for not paying attention to this game?

  73. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:38 pm

Double, walk, hit, no runs. Only the Mariners can fuck up Moneyball…

  74. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:39 pm

    Lopez took a walk!!

  75. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 6:39 pm

OHHHHHHH THE OLD WOOD BAT MYTH

  76. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:40 pm

  77. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 6:40 pm

    BETTY!

  78. argh on March 15th, 2007 6:40 pm

That looked a *lot* like a home run.

  79. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:40 pm

I wonder what we’ll see more of this year – BBs for Lopez or HRs for Betancourt.

  81. katal on March 15th, 2007 6:42 pm

  95. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:51 pm

    Scratch that Vidro comment. .345 / .387 / .379 is pretty empty.

  96. Oly Rainiers Fan on March 15th, 2007 6:52 pm

They’re going to have to start giving away those big trucks they advertise constantly, to get people to buy 16 game packages. What, they think they can do it with 4 little bobbleheads?

Blowers’ explanation of why the M’s did well against the NL rivals his explanation of why it’s hard to be a DH in insight.

  107. argh on March 15th, 2007 6:59 pm

Seems safe to say Jeff’s not turned into a groundball pitcher over the winter.

  111. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:02 pm

  112. Des71 on March 15th, 2007 7:03 pm

    106. He’s walking on a legitimate “Kentucky Waterfall.” Where’s Buhner with the clippers?

  114. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 7:04 pm

Oh look! Crappy has-been bands at the Emerald Queen!

  115. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:04 pm

I may be going against the common thoughts out there, but I like Blowers. He spouts all the typical ex-player BS, which will certainly get on other people’s nerves, but his voice is more than tollerable, and really, that’s all I’m looking for in tv analysis.

  116. apunetid on March 15th, 2007 7:05 pm

For those who don’t live wherever it is where you can get the game on TV and can’t find the like for Gameday, here it is:

  117. Des71 on March 15th, 2007 7:05 pm

That Double Play M’s commercial is very disturbing!

  118. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 7:05 pm

OK, the double-play twins commercials was decent.

  119. PositivePaul on March 15th, 2007 7:06 pm

So about those “Buy 16-game get 4 bobblehead” plans that they’re advertising. If you buy into the 16 game plan, do you have to get in line 4 hours before the gates open just like everyone else in order to get one — for the four games they give them out — or do they just give you a special gate that you can go through to guarantee the giveaway (like they do in Cheney for the season ticket holders)???

  120. apunetid on March 15th, 2007 7:06 pm

What! where did it go? What a cruel joke! How about this: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2006/gd.html?2007_03_15_sfnmlb_seamlb_1

as long as they don’t sit in the dug out and act like the two fools in “Mr. 3000″ i’m okay with the “double-play twins”

    Weaver! Weaver! Weaver!

  124. marbledog on March 15th, 2007 7:10 pm

  131. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:16 pm

it was a line drive to left center…

  132. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:17 pm

Hard-hit past the SS into left-center. CF took a poor route to the ball and had to dive just to stop it from going to the wall.

  133. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 7:17 pm

Giese throws 18 pitches, 4 balls. Makes everybody look stupid.

  134. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 7:19 pm

    132, thanks.

But now we need to discuss a rule change. With the new powers granted to the scorekeeprs to determine whether a “Mental” error lead to the result of the play, would that be a single and an error or a double because of the CF taking a bad route to the ball, or would you just leave that alone?

  135. Des71 on March 15th, 2007 7:20 pm

I don’t want your stinking trinkets. Give me a division title!

  136. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:20 pm

I’d leave it as a double. Even if the CF makes the stop on the run, his momentum is still taking him away from the play and it’s going to be a pretty tough throw to get Yuni out.

  137. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:20 pm

    morse made that look ugly…

  138. Daniel Carroll on March 15th, 2007 7:21 pm

    #120: Thanks!

    God I’ve missed baseball.

  139. argh on March 15th, 2007 7:22 pm

Man, how fast was Ichiro getting to that ball?

  140. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:22 pm

Good to see Ichiro understands that Raul is a liability out there and takes a ball that was clearly the LF’s.

  141. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 7:24 pm

    RIZZS NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  142. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:25 pm

Dammit! Now Rizzs I can’t stand. I’d rather listen to Fairly any day of the week.

  143. Des71 on March 15th, 2007 7:25 pm

That salt n’ pepa goat on Rizzs is RIZDICULOUS!

  144. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:25 pm

    [Rizzs]

  145. PositivePaul on March 15th, 2007 7:26 pm

Okay, I’m sick of the Double Play Twins commercial already. And it’s only been one day.

  146. Oly Rainiers Fan on March 15th, 2007 7:28 pm

119 (Paul): you mean like they DID at Cheney for the season ticket holders. There’s new owners in town boy, and things are gonna be a little bit different.

  147. DMZ on March 15th, 2007 7:28 pm

I love that Rizzs was so distracted by the shot of scantily-clad women he nearly lost his place in his spiel. That’s awesome.

  148. DanO on March 15th, 2007 7:34 pm

Didn’t Frankie Valli die about 10 years ago?

  149. PositivePaul on March 15th, 2007 7:35 pm

…like they DID at Cheney for the season ticket holders…

Oooh, that’s right. Damn you Nick Lachey!!!!

  150. marbledog on March 15th, 2007 7:35 pm

re: Blowers – I just had to switch to radio for a while, long enough to have to listen to that god-awful hair commercial by Dave Valle, and omg is it refreshing to have Blowers and not Valle/Hendu. His analysis might not be brilliant, but at least he knows how to speak English.

  151. Goose on March 15th, 2007 7:35 pm

Well at least Clement didn’t K that time.

  152. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 7:37 pm

I’d say it’s no secret Jeff isn’t ML ready. It’s really a bummer in his development that he missed some of last year with an injury, only to be “aggressively” promoted right after.

  153. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 7:37 pm

Someone stitch up that Golden Sombraro. Morse is about to need a new hat.

  154. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 15th, 2007 7:39 pm

  156. Goose on March 15th, 2007 7:42 pm

That wasn’t a groundball either Green.

  162. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:48 pm

rather have BURKE than johnson, but anybody over rivera…

  163. msb on March 15th, 2007 7:48 pm

that god-awful hair commercial by Dave Valle,

but, you know, recently Valle has been experiencing hair loss.

    Green owes Rob Johnson dinner.

  164. Typical Idiot Fan on March 15th, 2007 7:48 pm

    Johnson’s showing off.

  165. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:49 pm

Gonzaga only has three minutes to come back from 11 down…sorry east-siders…

  166. billT on March 15th, 2007 7:51 pm

There’s some sense of morbid curiosity that makes me interested in seeing Valle’s “new hair” on tv. I can’t decide if it’s more likely he’ll be wearing one of Rizzs’ spare pieces or if he’s just as bald as ever.

  167. David* on March 15th, 2007 7:51 pm

    Teal armpits wtf

  168. Mr. Egaas on March 15th, 2007 7:51 pm

I hope the little pieces of ‘flare’ on the side of these spring training hats isn’t permanent. Between these and the “cool flow!” helmets, equipment is looking like little league.

  169. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:53 pm

did morse shave his hair to look/hit like rauuuuuuuuuuul? now they have the said “do” and fielding skills…lol

  174. bakomariner on March 15th, 2007 7:57 pm

vidro “did his job” because he’s a “professional hitter”

  175. Goose on March 15th, 2007 7:58 pm

    Jose Vidro=Professional hitter

  176. apunetid on March 15th, 2007 7:58 pm

Does that count as keeping a rally going?

  177. argh on March 15th, 2007 7:58 pm

He had a “better plan”. What in the bloody hell does that mean?

  178. msb on March 15th, 2007 7:58 pm

I believe the ‘flair’ is just to sell yet another spring cap. They’ll be back to normal come the season.

  179. apunetid on March 15th, 2007 8:02 pm

Is Gameday staggering, or does it just take Vidro that long to tromp back to the dugout?

  180. Des71 on March 15th, 2007 8:02 pm

It’s the return of the Phillistines. Quick get your sling and stones.

  188. billT on March 15th, 2007 8:09 pm

  211. Rain Delay on March 15th, 2007 10:05 pm

So with the addition of Blowers this year, does this mean we no longer have to listen to Hendu?

  212. msb on March 16th, 2007 6:42 am

    from Larry Stone:

“The Mariners’ 2007 plan is for Niehaus to begin each game in the TV
booth for the first few innings with Blowers, and then move to the radio booth with Rizzs. For most games, Rizzs will work on the radio side only. Sims and Blowers will team up when Niehaus goes to the radio booth. Blowers, 41, replaces former analysts Henderson and Valle, who may appear in more limited roles. Adamack said the team was looking for a full-time analyst, rather than splitting the duties as in the past. “We’ve told both of them [Henderson and Valle] there will probably be some times over the course of the season where we’d want to use them in a game here or there,” Adamack said.”"

  213. Joe on March 16th, 2007 11:25 am

So on radio-only games (and games where we’re in the car or otherwise unable to use a TV) we’re going to have to listen to Rizzs for the entire game? Aaaargh! I guess the upside is that if you stick to TV only, you’ll never hear him. And you get a full helping of Blowers rather than Henderson or Valle. Man, they must really want to drive people towards TV. KIRO can’t be happy.
