USSM redhot book giveaway!

DMZ · March 30, 2007 at 6:50 pm · Filed Under Off-topic ranting, Site information

Hey, I’ve got a paperback copy of “Baseball Between the Numbers: Why Everything You Know About the Game Is Wrong” edited by friend-of-the-site Jonah Keri, with a new afterward. Jonah did an awesome job with the book, it’s chock-full of good stuff, and it’s free. I’ll spring for postage and everything. Drop a comment here indicating your interest in this free book.

One rule: you must have registered before today. I will check. If I pick you and you registered today, I’ll pick again.

You may wonder “Derek, it seems like if I could somehow show that I purchased or gave a nice review of your book, the excellent Cheaters Guide to Baseball, that my chances of winning this seemingly unrelated giveaway would dramatically increase.”

And I would say “With that kind of mindset, I know just the book for you: a Cheaters Guide to Baseball. But you’re welcome to try to influence the outcome that way.”

No, they aren’t, barring a miracle; but I’d love to have the book anyway. :)

I’d love a copy of the book. As for “Cheater’s Guide,” what’s this?

I bought 39 copies of the Cheater’s guide but only have a reciept for 1 of them….

Also, while i’ve already got BBBTN, i’d love to have another copy…

Also, I was in a car wreck on the way home from work this evening… looks like my car is totaled…. everyone walked away without a scratch… my luck is too powerful….I doubt it’s worth anyone else’s effort to try and buck my power by also throwing their hat in the ring…

    Just saying, that’s all.

Lou is being interviewed on WGN… apparently he’s not a card player…. but he loves crab.

  5. natebracy on March 30th, 2007 7:15 pm

    A free book? I’m game.

  6. lotus eater on March 30th, 2007 7:19 pm

I have a hard time believing that everything I know about baseball is wrong, but I would love to be, uh, wrong about that.

  7. domovoi on March 30th, 2007 7:33 pm

    Doesn’t hurt to try.

  8. Shizane on March 30th, 2007 7:35 pm

I have cheated to win this giveaway……

  9. pensive on March 30th, 2007 7:38 pm

The small independant bookstore in Langley, WA left me meaage book is in as I ordered from them rather tan Amazon to give more exposure. You must know that it is already in stores. I was surprised so quickly. They are ordering more copies.

  10. Almuliman on March 30th, 2007 7:41 pm

Not a game thread, but the M’s are not looking good so far. Thrown out at first, flied out, flied out first. Misplay at 1st to start the 2nd (Go, Sexson!).

A free book – particularly a good one – is definitely better than that. And help me maintain my studious bookworm image.

  11. Boss! Boss! LaHair! LaHair! on March 30th, 2007 7:43 pm

Pick me, because I’d probably buy it anyway, but now I can spend it on beer. And I could spend it on beer for YOU!

  12. South Pacific on March 30th, 2007 7:52 pm

Not much baseball reading here in the South Pacific, so I’ll even come to Federal Way next week to pick it up if you want (actually, I am coming anyways, whatever).

  13. sevenfly on March 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

I think this blog generally underestimates the value of Richie Sexson. Aren’t 200 runs/rbi’s still count for 200 runs/rbi’s??? I’ve read people bringing up the replacement value argument, but he gives the M’s an advantage over 2 division teams in Oakland and LA. He is good for over 100 runs created a year. How many AL 1B’s do that? This is one of the reasons I want to find out why everything I know about baseball is wrong.

  14. David J. Corcoran I on March 30th, 2007 7:55 pm

Pick me! I purchased a copy for myself, my father (for father’s day), my mother (for mother’s day), my brother (for his birthday), AND my sister’s husband (for his birthday). I’ll prove this to you next time I see you with 5 copies of the book.

WOW. . .what am I going to do when I get that book. . .
Everything I know about baseball can’t be wrong, because
I’m too old to learn anything new!

I need that book sittin’ here in the rocking chair of retirement.

I suppose if one was already the recipient of a free book ….

Scuffs the comma to turn it into a period.

I’ll throw my name into a hat for a free book. Especially if it’s a good one…

  22. Steve Nelson on March 30th, 2007 8:49 pm

    Pick me.
I quit blogging, which probably caused the traffic at USSM to increase by maybe one unique visitor per day. So I’m not to blame for server overload crashes. I also bought Cheaters Guide. Ergo, I deserve “Baseball Between the Numbers” to complement my library. (Also note the correct grammatical use of “complement”, which hews to USSM posting principles, and thereby further demonstrates how I am uniquely deserving of this choice offer.)

  23. daimajin on March 30th, 2007 9:00 pm

Picking me could lead to world peace…….

  24. david h on March 30th, 2007 9:01 pm

  27. David J. Corcoran I on March 30th, 2007 9:11 pm

I wonder if there’s more than one criterium that leads to the decision of who to give the book to?

Note the proper use of the um/a on neuter verbs, as footnoted in Cheaters Guide to Baseball.

  28. David J. Corcoran I on March 30th, 2007 9:15 pm

that would be neuter *nouns. Nouns, of the second-declension variety.

  29. joser on March 30th, 2007 9:25 pm

    This is hilarious.

  30. Steve T on March 30th, 2007 9:38 pm

I would never cheat, or try to influence the outcome in any way. That would be wrong. That said, I have been walking around town sporting my “Cheaters Guide” prominently, enjoying it publicly in the neighborhood, making sure the author’s name is visible (and the author’s photograph is concealed). Ought to be worth SOMETHING, huh?

  31. apunetid on March 30th, 2007 10:18 pm

Well, if you consider the VORP of the player in question, then I’m sure you’ll see…ah, you got me; I’m just in it for the book.

I registered today in a feeble attempt at cheating the giveaway. I’m not very good at cheating.

On the upside, I know very little about baseball. Thus, I’m wrong about much, much less than the rest of you.

I’ll go out and buy both books myself. I might be stupid, but I’m not cheap.

I need “Baseball Between the Numbers”. I’ve been a baseball fan since Yaz was a rookie. I use stats at work to analyze the stuff that I make but I don’t get why you guys rely on baseball stats so much. Honest. Sometimes I think you guys are missing all the fun.

    hi

  54. VaBeachMarinersFan on March 31st, 2007 9:47 am

Send it to me for 5 reasons:

    1) I already ordered your book.
    2) I emailed the local #1 morning show about your book and how they should do an on air interview with you (Hampton Roads area has well over a million souls). (FM99.com)
    3) I heard my sister believes in having a very good time and I have her phone number.
    4) I donated $20 to the USSM Server fund.
    5) I may have incriminating pictures of Willie and Hargrove at a North Bend gas station.

    Thanks for the consideration

I use stats at work to analyze the stuff that I make but I don’t get why you guys rely on baseball stats so much. Honest. Sometimes I think you guys are missing all the fun.

I actually e-mailed something like this to Rob Neyer, back when he was new at ESPN (when he was still really pretty good) and he explained how he used the equations to simply evualate a player. That the current measurements (metrics) were misleading. Ever since then, I’ve paid much more attention to the other metrics out there, and didn’t mind the statistical analysis. As a matter of fact, I actually prefer them to stand-alone scouting methods (shocker of shockers). Stick with it, you will too!

  69. MedicineHat on March 31st, 2007 4:34 pm

Well, interestingly enough, I just tried to post this under your thread about your NY Times review, but for some reason you pulle dthat post down.

Anyway, I should get the book because I literally just got done reading your book. I flew from Seattle to San Jose for a Rotis baseball draft and I couldn’t put it down. Made the flight go very quick. Aside from a few editing issues, Which you can expect in any book, it was fabulous. I even got *most* the humor.

  70. DMZ on March 31st, 2007 4:37 pm

Whoops, sorry – yeah, that post went live when I was still editing it for a couple minutes, and then I polished it off and put it back in public.

Hey, if you liked it that much, you could do me a good turn and punch in a review at Amazon — it’d be a big help.

  71. MedicineHat on March 31st, 2007 4:38 pm

Another reason I should get the book is, I could probably get you an interview on KRKO 1380 with “the Fish”.

    Bribery = good

I use facial expressions and auditory ques to be able to communicate at work but I don’t get why some guys would rely on those things for baseball blogs. Honest. Sometimes I think you guys are missing all the fun.
