Happy Opening Felix Day

Dave · April 2, 2007 at 7:13 am · Filed Under Mariners

Well, it’s finally here. This time it counts, or do we have to wait until July to say that?

In about eight and a half hours, Felix Hernandez will throw a first pitch fastball to open the 2007 season, and what is likely the most pivotal season in the franchises history will begin. We’ve written our fair share of analysis and opinions about how the offseason went and what we expect this year to look like, but as of today, only the results on the field matter.

Today, we have hope. King Felix takes the hill for the last time before he turns 21 and makes the first of what is hopefully a decade or two of opening day starts at Safeco Field. Win today and the team will take possession of first place.

Huzzah for opening day. Go M’s.

I was just barely awake at the time, but did I really hear KUOW’s promo for Derek’s 10AM Weekday appearance describe him as a local bookie?

I’m gonna leave work early and go home and watch it in HD. w000t!

Ahh…finally. Green grass, dirt, wood, and best of all, baseball. Hey, I’m not a big stats person. But I will contribute this on opening day. For those of you that are Mac users, and use the Adiumx chat client, I’ve posted two Mariners dock icon sets on the Adiumextras website and anyone can download and have it as their dock icons for their Adium chat client! Here are the two links: Home Away

That’s how much fever I’ve had. For those of you that are Mac users, enjoy! GO MARINERS!

Oops, I messed up on the links. Here are the correct links: Home Away

  7. Beniitec on April 2nd, 2007 7:43 am

Ok, for those of us who don’t know, where can we get it on HD? Thanks.

I’ve got tickets, am taking a half day at work and am ready to go watch some damned baseball! It’s about time!

On my work calendar, I was at least honest — “Subject: Day Off; Location: Safeco Field”. Of course, no one at work should need to look at my calendar to know that. They already know I’m the craziest M’s fan there.

The third battery for my camera is topping off; the memory cards are clear. I’m takin’ a day and makin’ it fun. It’ll be good to see ‘new’ Felix. Just about to leave the house to head up to Seattle & hang out up there.

How ’bout Loaiza on the DL? That’s gotta help us a bit early in the year.

I woke up at 4:30 to catch the bus and get to work at 6am so I could meet up with my buddies for the game and still work a full day. I can’t wait for the game to start 🙂

I watched the Eagle Hardware and Garden (where I used to work, actually) video about the 1995 Season -“My Oh My” last night. It got me excited about this year. There were some serious power hitters on that team and Randy Johnson, of course, but there were also some role-player scrubs, guys past their primes, and some guys who simply played up to their potential at a good time that year. There were ups and downs – Griffey out for a long time, a big stretch of losing – but the division wasn’t spectacular, and the M’s started to play well together in the bandbox venu that was the kingdome.

I know there aren’t a ton of similarities, but Spring hope springs eternal (for at least another several hours), and all the memories of ’95 are actually getting me excited about this year. Sure it’s been 3 rather than 19 years, but I do really think that this year’s team has a shot at being pretty good “if a whole lot of things go right.”

By the way, I had another happy moment remembering the Yankees series in ’95. One of my friends from college is a HUGE Yankees fan – one of the most annoying there is. He still can’t get over the ’95 series. I am serious. It still eats away at him, and I look at it as the beginning (more or less) of a winning tradition taking hold in Seattle (tradition with a small “t”). I am getting off work early today to watch the game. Go M’s! Opening Day is a great day to be a fan.

Hello there, folks. A long time fan of the M’s and USSM from far away Finland here. First time commenting.

10 hours ahead of you guys and the game isn’t on until 1.35 AM, so i’m thinking of taking at least half a day off tomorrow…the first half.

not if it means we see Blanton instead….

I don’t see how the argument that 2007 is the “most pivotal season” in team history. It’s not like the team is threatening to move (like 1995), and it’s not like teams have a ‘groundhogs day’ which will signify success or failure for the next decade.

Let’s face it, this is just another season. The more wins the better. But does any result between 70 and 90 wins say ANYTHING about how the team will be in 2008?

I have very rarely been more excited for anything. YES!

I may just go out and celebrate Opening Day by buying Derek’s book!

  18. patl on April 2nd, 2007 10:03 am

Daniel, it’s more in the spirit of the book if you just shoplift it instead.

does Dave Mahler even listen to what comes out of his mouth? …

‘we know Japanese players can hit, but none of the pitchers have had much success’

Here’s the ESPN link in case anyone else gets bit by the fact their site navigation doesn’t seem to be working today…
