Opening Day Festivities, USSM Prediction contest

DMZ · April 2, 2007 at 8:00 am · Filed Under Mariners

10:00 AM: I’m on KUOW’s Weekday, talking about the Mariners, the Cheater’s Guide to Baseball, and all things baseball.

Also at 10: Tampa Bay Devil Rays @ New York Yankees, ESPN
11am: Chicago Cubs featuring Lou Piniella @ the Cincinnati Reds, ESPN2

1-3ish: USSM pre-game chilling at the Pioneer Square Saloon. I sign books, and trade books for beer. Hang out!

1: Boston Red Sox @ Kansas City Royals, ESPN

3:35ish: M’s versus Oakland, in an unusually important series for the M’s — if Oakland flattens them to start the season after last year’s ridiculous drubbing, that’s going to be tough to come back from.

4: Baltimore Orioles @ Minnesota Twins, ESPN2

6:21pm: Ohio State vs Florida in the NCAA Tournament final. If the M’s game is a blowout, I expect to see fans streaming from of Safeco to Pyramid/Sluggers/etc to catch that game.

7: Texas Rangers @ Anaheim LA Angels of Anaheim.

Contest: email us with your guess for the highest and lowest announced attendance numbers for the 2007 season. I will painstakingly collate them, and prizes will be awarded at season’s end.

Something tells me that taking the Price-is-Right “One Dollar” method on this one is just not going to work.

Great day today, I have the day off of work, so I can watch baseball all day long. What’s up with the weather though? It’s hailing like crazy here in Stanwood.

Something tells me that taking the Price-is-Right “One Dollar” method on this one is just not going to work.

Given that I own three 16-game plans this year, that means that 1/5th of all home games are guaranteed to have an attendance of at least three.

  4. Daniel Carroll on April 2nd, 2007 9:04 am

haha, dw. My family gets the season package, too, so that’s two more… we’re at five now….

  5. The Ancient Mariner on April 2nd, 2007 9:12 am

Yeah, if there was ever such a thing as a must-win opening series, this would be it . . .

  6. Sports on a Schtick on April 2nd, 2007 9:36 am

Also keep in mind that bad teams inflate attendance numbers when their place is half-empty. Not that Seattle is a bad team…

  7. EnglishMariner on April 2nd, 2007 9:40 am

It’s 5.35PM in the UK and I’m all fired up for my first ever Mariners opening day!

  8. Jim Thomsen on April 2nd, 2007 9:48 am

Fourteen minutes before DMZ and Larry Stone gang up on Art Thiel and verbally bitch-slap him into the next area code.

    ::putting on my pessimist outfit::

10,785… sometime after the shocking deadline deal that sends Ichiro away for two prospects and some other piece of veteran trash to add to Howie and Chuck’s collection of overrated veteran garbage. And the only reason it stays above 10,000 is because of continued semi-legit participation in the AL West race.

  10. zzyzx on April 2nd, 2007 9:50 am

    Highest 47,231 . Lowest 12,190

  11. zzyzx on April 2nd, 2007 9:58 am

Heh, I accidentally gave a number larger than capacity.

Oh well, I didn’t email it anyway.

  12. Gomez on April 2nd, 2007 10:00 am

Oh, highest attendance guess… 46,348… first year in Safeco’s history where there is not a single sellout.

KUOW is currently boring me to tears… DMZ’s appearance can’t get here soon enough.

  13. Gomez on April 2nd, 2007 10:00 am

I inexplicably have no e-mail access, so I’ll have to send these guesses way later.

  14. Bender on April 2nd, 2007 10:04 am

Enrique Rojas, of ESPNdeportes.com, picks the Mariners to win the West!!!

  15. Gomez on April 2nd, 2007 10:21 am

    14. I think ‘I pick the Mariners to be the worst’ got lost in the Espanol a Ingles translacion.

KUOW is currently boring me to tears

Man, they’re reporting a breaking story about killings at the UW campus and you’re bored?

  17. Dave on April 2nd, 2007 10:29 am

The host is trying like hell to get Derek to name names of current cheaters. This is four questions in a row of “so, who is cheating today?”

  18. Gomez on April 2nd, 2007 10:30 am

    16. I wrote that comment BEFORE I heard the breaking news from UW.

Even that breaking news aside, the previous show was laden with Zzzzzzzzzzzz….

  19. okdan on April 2nd, 2007 10:31 am

There was a really awesome zinger against The Ignitor, at the very beginning. Nice!

  20. DerekS on April 2nd, 2007 10:58 am

It’s about time for another Willie Bloomquist reference …

  21. joser on April 2nd, 2007 11:12 am

I don’t know, I thought the details of seabird ecology was pretty fascinating, and the scientist was an excellent speaker. But I’m kind of weird that way — if it’s science, I’ll probably listen to it and enjoy it. Traditional sports talk radio, I have to turn off.

  22. Gomez on April 2nd, 2007 11:40 am

The host is trying like hell to get Derek to name names of current cheaters. This is four questions in a row of “so, who is cheating today?”

Derek did a hell of a job of sidestepping such libel-inducing questioning, sticking to only ridiculously obvious answers that are somewhat common knowledge, like the Texas sign-stealing and Gary Matthews Jr.

  23. Steve T on April 2nd, 2007 11:44 am

He should have thrown in a few licks of “broadcasters cheat too, you know, like when they keep asking the same leading question that they know can’t be answered over and over again”.

  24. sodomojojojo on April 2nd, 2007 12:07 pm

quick update: Doyle’s playing LF right now!

so, will there be a game thread, or should we use Happy Felix day to fidget before the game gets underway?

  27. Dave on April 2nd, 2007 12:27 pm

There will be a game thread. We’re letting Lookout Landing get a big lead in comment count to make up for their ego being bruised by that whole best blog voting thing.

  28. msb on April 2nd, 2007 12:28 pm

you guys are saints, saints I tell you.

  29. louder on April 2nd, 2007 12:35 pm

Bring it on! Just got back from a brew run (ESB), so I’m all set.

i just saw Soriano as a Brave, looks wrong.

He looks great in a Braves jersey..(says the Braves fan.) I’m sorry but JS completely ripped the M’s off on that one.

  32. lokiforever on April 2nd, 2007 1:15 pm

    31 – Don’t apologize, we’re used to it.

  33. Troy J on April 2nd, 2007 1:17 pm

    gil meche, opening day starter!!!

I say he gives up 4 runs in 6.

  34. billT on April 2nd, 2007 1:27 pm

Meche won’t make it six innings. He’s got the same problem there that he had here. He gets to 0-2 or 1-2 pretty easily, and then has no idea how to put a guy away. So he ends up throwing a ton of pitches to each hitter until they foul a few off and then either walk or get a hit. He’ll make it 5 innings at the most. His pitch count will be far too high to go any farther than that.

  35. MedicineHat on April 2nd, 2007 1:32 pm

    Gil Meche in the first…
    1IP, 2H, 1BB, 1ER, 27 pitches, 15 strikes, 2 K’s.

Or….what we already knew about him.

  36. argh on April 2nd, 2007 2:07 pm

Alright, which one of my rotten kids stole my Ichiro! ball cap? How am I expected to make a proper entrance to the stadium without my Ichiro! hat? Grumble, grumble.

  37. ChrisK on April 2nd, 2007 2:50 pm

    Meche through 5:

    76 pitches, 1 ER, 6 K, 1 BB

    Royals 5, Red Sox 1
