Game 4, Mariners at Red Sox

DMZ · April 10, 2007 at 9:57 am · Filed Under Game Threads

Weaver vs Beckett. 11:05, radio only. Whether that’ll be a blessing or curse is, obviously, yet to be seen.

M’s DL’ed Arthur Rhodes, retroactive to opening day, and activated Jake Woods.

upside: we will see Turbo in the 9th. Prediction GIDP to end the game.

  2. billT on April 10th, 2007 1:58 pm

So who was the third guy ejected after Guillen struck out?

  3. Joe on April 10th, 2007 1:59 pm

You know, this might not be a bad strategy all season: get a tit-for-tat ejection to remove a pitcher. Would work better with Vidro, though, so the M’s don’t lose anything of value in the exchange.

The 9th inning brings up the following 3 “hitters” for the Ms:

    Jason Ellison
    Willie Bloomquist
    Jose Vidro

Could you contruct a weaker set of 1-3 hitters in a major league game?

  7. billT on April 10th, 2007 2:03 pm

Good heavens, when ultimate home-team announcer Dave Niehaus says, “… the team looks like they’ve forgotten how to play…” you KNOW you’re in the tank. Sheeesh.

Nah. Neihaus does a decently good job of calling it like it is. I’ve heard him mention how much this team sucks before.

Now if Rizzs had said it…

  8. atait on April 10th, 2007 2:04 pm

There had better be a retaliation…

Didn’t we hear that a lot last season, when the Ms got into their streaky funks? (Basically, a knock against Hargrove….)

  10. carcinogen on April 10th, 2007 2:05 pm

If not for the presence of Ellison and Bloomquist, I would not have ruled out the possibility of a GITP by Turbo.

You know, I’m also a hockey fan. And I’m fine with hockey fights. Don’t love them, but don’t mind them. But for some reason, I can’t stand baseball brawls. They seem so… disingenuous. And the fact that 60 year old managers and coaches are out there in in… just strange to me.

  12. atait on April 10th, 2007 2:07 pm

How prophetic. Ellison, Bloomquist, and Vidro just might help make that happen for you.

  14. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 2:11 pm

I wonder who Felix is going to plunk tomorrow?

  15. sidroo on April 10th, 2007 2:11 pm

#243. None of the relievers has thrown a live pitch in a week, is why.

  16. carcinogen on April 10th, 2007 2:12 pm

WFB can’t even give me a chance to see the GITP…dang

Bringing in Putz, fantastic…Hargrove knew i needed his fantasy points today!

I know what you mean. I’ve never played organized baseball, but there just isn’t as much contact or proximity between players like there is in hockey. Compared with the constant physical nature of hockey, football, and even basketball, baseball seems to have an inordinately high number of fights. I’m not saying I’d want to be hit by a 95 mph fastball, but I don’t see how that’s more likely to starta brawl than half the stuff hockey players get away with.

  19. kentroyals5 on April 10th, 2007 2:17 pm

Sign Timlin!! He already looks like a Mariner pitcher!

  20. apunetid on April 10th, 2007 2:18 pm

Yeah!!! A run! “In play, run(s)” never gets old…well, today it did, on the defensive side of things.

  21. Dave in Palo Alto on April 10th, 2007 2:19 pm

Seems wrong that the Baseball Gods will only bestow one loss upon the M’s for today’s efforts. The boys laid enough stink for at least two or three.

  22. _David_ on April 10th, 2007 2:20 pm

Nightmare senario, first inning, curveball gets away from felix, paranoid umpire ejects him, M’s lose 10-0. Dream scenario, M’s win 1-0.

  23. joser on April 10th, 2007 2:21 pm

Hockey players get away with stuff because they know everybody else on the ice knows how to fight. You don’t start something unless you’re seriously aggieved, because there’s a good chance you’ll have your ass handed to you, or at least take a few decent shots while you’re pounding on the other guy. Most baseball players can’t fight, so brawls don’t amount to much usually, and the hot heads just end up looking stupid (like Don Zimmer vs Pedro, or Robin Ventura getting schooled by Nolan Ryan).

  24. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 2:24 pm

268 – MLB should retroactively give the M’s 3 losses for the Cleveland series too (giving them 1 win for Felix’s start). A strong case could be made based on today’s performance.

  25. thenatural on April 10th, 2007 2:26 pm

what a shock, richie sexson driving in runs at the end of a game thats already been lost…

Would it be a bad time to say that Washington is turning Fruto into a starter and he threw 6 scoreless today for the AAA team?

  27. Celadus on April 10th, 2007 2:33 pm

Too early to that Weaver is going to entirely suck. He seems to need fine control to get by and the chance he would have it after all that time off is minimal.

If Hernandez had gotten bombed after such a long layoff (and he well might tomorrow), we’d lay it off to rustiness. Give Weaver the benefit of a doubt is all I’m saying.

Ditto for Hargrove. He only uses his brain on game days.

  28. Choska on April 10th, 2007 2:33 pm

I’ve said it before, no way that Weaver and Ramirez make it through the year as Mariners.

I just saw a copy of the Mariner’s magazine with our three new pitchers on the cover. Even the PR writers where having a hard time find good things to say about them.

The ironic thing is the “Parting Shot” picture on the last page. It is a picture of Ichiro and Grover. Why do I think the message behind that is, ‘say goodbye to Ichiro and Grover.’

  29. msb on April 10th, 2007 2:33 pm

    embarrasing?

oh, I think the up-12-runs game in Cleveland must be mentioned

  30. Evan on April 10th, 2007 2:34 pm

I think that makes Fruto the best starting pitcher in the Nationals’ system.

  31. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 2:34 pm

273 – Actually, Fruto threw 6 *hitless* innings today in AAA.

  32. gwangung on April 10th, 2007 2:40 pm

Well, it HAS been a small sample size for the Little Three (Ramirez, Weaver et al)…but that said…man have they STUNK so far…

  33. frenchonion on April 10th, 2007 2:59 pm

    #278

Yeah, how many walks did Fruto have?

  34. ChrisK on April 10th, 2007 3:21 pm

    Fruto’s line: 6 IP, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 R

  35. gwangung on April 10th, 2007 3:54 pm

    Fruto’s line: 6 IP, 1 BB, 5 K, 0 R

So you’re saying the team are dunces at developing pitching talent as well as recognizing pitching talent…

(Yeah, yeah, small sample size…but I never miss a chance to take a cheap shot).

What’re you talking about; Ramirez hasn’t even pitched yet.

    Ahem.

  37. Evan on April 10th, 2007 4:23 pm

Good point. Despite the date, we’ve only played 4 games. And we’re 2-2. The Yankees and Devil Rays both started 2-2.

  38. msb on April 10th, 2007 5:27 pm

sigh. the Indians don’t seem to have any rust after sitting for 5 days …

  39. JMHawkins on April 10th, 2007 5:29 pm

Well, it HAS been a small sample size for the Little Three (Ramirez, Weaver et al)…

Small number of innings pitched, yes, but a depressingly large number of walks, hits and pitches thrown…

  40. Steve T on April 10th, 2007 6:02 pm

Snelling started in left today. 0-2 so far. Come on, Doyle hit a couple of homers!

  41. James T on April 10th, 2007 6:43 pm

I was at this game today. Very very weird. You start with an opening day crowd which is disproportionately “look at me, I’m so important” types. Combine that with 45 degree temperatures, overcast weather and steady breezes and you get an oddly quiet crowd.

In the pregame ceremonies they botched the introduction of the 1967 Red Sox to the disappointment of everyone around me.

I’m apparently one of the few Sox fans who didn’t think Derek Lowe’s every cranky facial expression portended doom. But Weaver had the worst body language ever going right from the start.

I got to look really smart (I have to cherish such opportunities when they arise) in the 7th. I just finished telling someone that Guillen was supposedly the guy who ratted out Donnelly for use of pine tar in his glove and bam. Verbal jousting etc.

Not sure what to say about the M’s. They didn’t look right in the field or at bat. I’m sure Beckett was part of that but he’s so odd. He walks no one over 7 innings but as is often the case he seems to get behind an inordinate number of hitters for a pitcher who isn’t walking anyone. Odd game, hard to draw too many inferences from it.

If it’s any consolation, I was in Fenway for the game when the Sox beat the Marlins 25-8. The Sox didn’t even make an out till something like the 12th batter of the game. That was the year the Marlins won the World Series for the second time.

So, any word in the Boston media if Francona called Hargrove to apologize today for what his team did to the M’s?

Snelling started in left today. 0-2 so far. Come on, Doyle hit a couple of homers!

He now seems to have 1 of the 3 Nat hits, but it’s a mere double. And the M’s got one of those from Betancourt today, so Bavasi doesn’t look so bad.

  43. Oly Rainiers Fan on April 10th, 2007 7:01 pm

This was a really entertaining thread filled with witty and snarky comments. Thanks guys.

Hmmm, the long layoff didn’t seem to hurt the Indians as much. They’re currently beating the Angels though it’s a higher scoring game than I would have expected.

  44. msb on April 10th, 2007 7:07 pm

Huddy was making most every one look bad today.

I keep switching from game to game … I feel like I have to get my fill of baseball in tonight, as I am off to visit a friend who would never think to turn on a ball game

  45. Wishhiker on April 10th, 2007 7:13 pm

Bavasi looks bad because Vidro didn’t get a double, it’s Vidro that’s gettting the AB’s Snelling should be…

The T-Rats Looked Nearly as Futile in thier double-header today scoring 2 runs on 5 hits (with 5 errors) while giving up 19 runs on 23 hits (over 2 7 inning contests.) Triunfel was 1-3 with a SO in each contest (no R or RBI). I had almost forgotten we had another Hargrove down there, he had the only T-Rat Rbi in the second game.

  46. msb on April 10th, 2007 7:46 pm

in former Mariner news, Brett Tomko (now pitching a nice game for the Dodgers) drew the giveaway poster for Jackie Robinson night in LA, and a handsome one it is

    Guillen on Donnelly hitting Johjima:

“This goes way back since I was with the Angels. (I) caught him cheating once and, unfortunately, he keeps running his mouth like he’s going to hit me. You’ve got to be man enough to hit me and not hit a catcher.”

I’m starting to like Guillen. He may be an ass, but he’s my kind of ass.

  49. Wishhiker on April 11th, 2007 3:48 pm

    I like that too…
