Game 5, Mariners at Red Sox

Dave · April 11, 2007 at 3:30 pm · Filed Under Mariners

4:05 pm, Felix vs Matsuzaka. Please be kind to the servers and don’t hit refresh constantly – we’re expecting a very heavy traffic load for tonight’s game.

I haven’t been this excited for a game in years. As my friends will attest, I get a bit giddy on Felix day anyways, and well, this is no ordinary Felix day. This is the leading contender for 2007 Game of the Year.

The media is going to run with Matsuzaka-Ichiro as the big story, which should be expected. The matchup will open the game, and Ichiro is the most famous player on the roster. Oh, and he happens to be from Japan, or so I’ve heard. Since it’s Boston, the focus of the story will be on Matsuzaka’s first start at Fenway. The $102 million right arm takes the hill in front of Red Sox Nation for the first time. And the leadoff hitter happens to be his countrymate. It writes itself.

But in four hours, there’s a good chance that Ichiro and Matsuzaka won’t be the story to come out of this game. This is King Felix’s first start in Fenway, too. Red Sox Nation has never seen him pitch, either, and it’s his first major league start as a 21 year old. It’s a nationally televised game – only the second one of his career.

On opening day, Felix told the city of Seattle that the hype was real, and that he wasn’t the babyfaced overweight kid anymore, but now he was coming after Johan Santana’s crown. Tonight, Felix has a chance to tell the rest of America.

Daisuke Matsuzaka is the second best pitcher taking the hill tonight. Go get em, Felix.

Yet Another Late Edit: Arthur Rhodes needs TJ surgery. This probably ends his career.

    That’s it!!!

The Rotation was built to lull the opponents hitters into relaxing before knocking them out with Felix. It’s almost as if it’s designed to make the King even better…

  2. Pete on April 11th, 2007 3:37 pm

I got chills. I can’t wait to sneak out of work early!! FELIX!!!

  3. Tek Jansen on April 11th, 2007 3:38 pm

Unless the M’s make a strong run in the AL West, this will be the most national exposure that they receive all year. Will Jose Vidro take this opportunity to unleash the last vestiges of his former all-star caliber awesomeness, or will fill up on the pre-game buffet roll out a few more worm burners?

  4. Steve T on April 11th, 2007 3:41 pm

    Dice-K versus King-K!

But you know, even if Felix gets knocked around today it won’t change how I feel about him or what his long-term prospects look like.

  5. David Corcoran on April 11th, 2007 3:42 pm

I’m excited…except work for the first hour so no game watching :(

Wow. I’m really sad about Mr. Rhodes. I was looking forward to him coming back.

  8. David* on April 11th, 2007 3:50 pm

I can’t believe ESPN has yet to mention the Ms TWO gritty South Kitsap graduates.

  9. dw on April 11th, 2007 3:51 pm

I’m just not going to post. When the server is glowing white-hot, it’s not worth the frustration.

Let’s hope King Felix steps forward on the world stage today.

  10. The People's Champion on April 11th, 2007 3:54 pm

I went into work early just so I could be home in time to watch the game.

I hope this game is wicked good.

  11. giuseppe on April 11th, 2007 3:57 pm

Interesting that as the future of pitching in Major League Baseball shares the stage, Arthur Rhodes may be ending his career. Not that he was ever on a level with Felix or Daisuke, but he gave us some great years in Seattle.

Sad to see him go. Glad to see him retire in an M’s uniform (if in fact he does retire).

    Go Ichiro!

    Go Felix!

  12. shirts on April 11th, 2007 3:58 pm

I love it. Over and over he’s referred to only as “King Felix” by ESPN. Props to USS Mariner for starting the revolution.

  13. David Corcoran on April 11th, 2007 4:03 pm

6 minutes to game time. Never before has there been a more important game. Here goes.

  14. PositivePaul on April 11th, 2007 4:03 pm

“King” Felix on XM, too — the A’s announcers (I believe it was the A’s announcers today) at least talked about the pitching duel today moreso than the Japanese connection.

Collective deep breath here. I’m more worried about our offense than I am Felix.

  15. Dave on April 11th, 2007 4:04 pm

Felix named his dog King – that nickname is never going away.

  16. David Corcoran on April 11th, 2007 4:06 pm

Something tells me Ichiro! is going to ignite this offense. Your 2007 Mariners will arrive today

  17. No Rhubarb on April 11th, 2007 4:07 pm

Wait… ignition? Shouldn’t we get WFB for that?

  18. _David_ on April 11th, 2007 4:07 pm

Dave, what does a 10 day break do to a pitcher, and what do teams do to counter this?

  19. revbill on April 11th, 2007 4:08 pm

    Felix named his dog King

In a way, Dave, you named his dog King.

  20. JI on April 11th, 2007 4:08 pm

This ESPN blackout is ridiculous, I want to see the game in HD! Bastards!

  21. PositivePaul on April 11th, 2007 4:08 pm

Felix named his dog King – that nickname is never going away.

So, has he sent Jason an autographed Burger King crown yet? He probably should…

  22. Dave on April 11th, 2007 4:09 pm

It’s not the best thing in the world, but as long as he did his sidework, it’s not the end of the world.

  23. Thom Jimsen on April 11th, 2007 4:09 pm

Do we know much about what Felix did to staty sharp and on his routine during the layoff? Did the Mariners go so far as to have him throw a simulated game?

  24. atait on April 11th, 2007 4:10 pm

The stage is sent for Felix’s royal coronation.

I have to Tivo this game since I’m still at work, so I’ll sign off with a wish of good luck to the King and a hope that we can eek out a run or two against Dice-K.

  25. Dave on April 11th, 2007 4:10 pm

They couldn’t have him throw a full simulated game with the question of whether he would pitch the next day or not. He likely just threw a bullpen session or two.

  26. JI on April 11th, 2007 4:10 pm

    Vidro!!!

I’m so happy we have a professional 3rd hitter!!!!!!!!!!11!!1! WOOT!

Get well soon Derek, I hope you are able to fully enjoy this matchup.

I know I’m pumped up for it, I slept for 3 hours and set my alarm to make sure I could watch. If I fall asleep at work tonight, they’ll have to get over it, next week is my last with them anyways!

I don’t remember the last time I have been this excited to watch a game on TV.

  30. JI on April 11th, 2007 4:15 pm

10-1 odds Felix’s first pitch is a fastball.

  50. Dave on April 11th, 2007 4:20 pm

Ibanez gets ahead 2-0, then chases two curveballs out of the strike zone. Nice.

  51. David Corcoran on April 11th, 2007 4:21 pm

Vidro is NOT the problem today.

  52. Thom Jimsen on April 11th, 2007 4:21 pm

Dice-K has made every lefty Mariner hitter foul the ball off themselves so far. At this rate, half the team will be limping to the plate by the ninth inning.

I really wish I could be at this game right now.

You gotta be kidding. Fenway is filled with Red Sox fans, the most obnoxious in baseball. Yankee fans, OTOH, are all curing cancer at the ballpark and apologizing for swearing in front of kids while they’re buying you beers.

  61. Jordan of Boise on April 11th, 2007 4:24 pm

WTF Here I am in Boise, with both FSN and ESPN2 saying that they are showing this game, and both channels are running filler! What is going on!? Heeeeeeelp!

  69. Dave on April 11th, 2007 4:26 pm

Heck of a play by Lopez there. And that’s the first flyball of the year off Felix.

  70. The People's Champion on April 11th, 2007 4:26 pm

  72. Karen on April 11th, 2007 4:26 pm

I guess Rhodes won’t be wearing Jackie Robinson’s number on his jersey any time soon.

Storm clouds brewing: On March 21st the Times reported that Rhodes was suffering from “a stiff elbow” and that Hargrove said it was “nothing serious”.

[snark] Rhodes probably had a good idea this winter that his elbow was hanging on by a thread, and might need career-threatening/ending surgery. Somehow he rehabbed that elbow well enough to con the Mariners brain trust into jumping up his NRI minor-league contract into one of those much-more-lucrative MLB contracts.

I wonder who pays for Rhodesey’s surgery, the Mariners….? Or Rhodes himself? I think I know the answer, but wouldn’t ask that if the M’s had simply released him before the end of Spring Training. [/snark]

(sorry all you Arthur Rhodes fans, I just feel he hasn’t been a reliable MLB pitcher for 3 out of the past 4 years — 2005 was some kind of fluke!! :) — probably due to his body gradually falling apart. It finally did, for sure)

  73. Thom Jimsen on April 11th, 2007 4:26 pm

  157. terry on April 11th, 2007 4:52 pm

On opening day, Felix told the city of Seattle that the hype was real, and that he wasn’t the babyfaced overweight kid anymore, but now he was coming after Johan Santana’s crown. Tonight, Felix has a chance to tell the rest of America.

It doesn’t get any better than this….

  202. billT on April 11th, 2007 5:07 pm

  203. Replacement level poster on April 11th, 2007 5:07 pm

Someone is going to take Matsuzaka deep tonight.

  205. Dave on April 11th, 2007 5:08 pm

The ump didn’t issue a warning. If he waits a couple innings and then puts one in Manny’s butt, they won’t toss him.

  206. Evan on April 11th, 2007 5:08 pm

Traditionally you’d hit the third guy due up the next inning. Retire teh first two and then hit the third guy.

Last I checked, Manny doesn’t like getting hit.

  207. 88fingerslukee on April 11th, 2007 5:09 pm

Felix needs to “lose control” of one into the bench and hit Dice-K

  208. Jordan of Boise on April 11th, 2007 5:09 pm

If Guillen wants to be “protected,” he should live up to his hothead rep and charge the mound. Preferably from second base. Like, right there during that fielder’s choice, just veer off the base path and proceede directly to kicking Dice-K’s ass.

  209. The People's Champion on April 11th, 2007 5:09 pm

What is the sign to tell the batter, “No matter what don’t swing! It would be better for you to strike out than to hit into the double play to end the inning.”

  292. Phoenician Todd on April 11th, 2007 5:56 pm

No way that was a force out!!

  293. 88fingerslukee on April 11th, 2007 5:56 pm

    TURBO!!!!!!!!

  294. Paul B on April 11th, 2007 5:57 pm

The Red Sox firstbaseman was surprised they got that double play. He didn’t know how slow Vidro is.

  295. Jordan of Boise on April 11th, 2007 5:57 pm

    All together now… “Turbo!” *wah-wah-wah*

  296. adamt on April 11th, 2007 5:57 pm

Wow. Even Matsuzaka thought Turbo was safe.

Felix has made the ‘breaking news’ on the ESPN2 ticker.

  297. terry on April 11th, 2007 5:57 pm

Vidro hits into a doubleplay…. he really deserved better on that one though….

  298. Tuomas on April 11th, 2007 5:58 pm

    Dice-K WPA: -.060
    Felix WPA: .345

  299. 88fingerslukee on April 11th, 2007 5:59 pm

    raul, jesus christ

  300. Go Manures! on April 11th, 2007 5:59 pm

That was almost the end of it…WOW THIS IS FUN!!!!!

  301. marbledog on April 11th, 2007 5:59 pm

    New headline on mlb.com:

“Enough Dice-K vs. Ichiro: What About Felix?”

  302. Dave on April 11th, 2007 6:01 pm

The key to understanding when Felix is tiring is when people start getting the ball in the air. He needs a couple quick outs if he’s going to wrap this up, because he’s running out of gas.

  303. zzyzx on April 11th, 2007 6:01 pm

It’s amazing that fly balls are freaking me out now. “Wait, he must be losing it!”

  304. apunetid on April 11th, 2007 6:01 pm

Ibanez! I don’t know what happened there, but the thing’s still going.

  305. JI on April 11th, 2007 6:03 pm

    BONG!

  306. thenatural on April 11th, 2007 6:03 pm

    SEE YA MANNY!!!!!!!!

  307. mshaslam on April 11th, 2007 6:03 pm

    damn…

  308. Evan on April 11th, 2007 6:03 pm

    5 Ks through 7.

  309. Thom Jimsen on April 11th, 2007 6:03 pm

I am six outs away from simultaneously evacuating every orifice I have.

  310. LB on April 11th, 2007 6:03 pm

What is the sign to tell the batter, “No matter what don’t swing! It would be better for you to strike out than to hit into the double play to end the inning.”

This is known in Section 137 as the Sacrifice K. (my section)

  311. KW on April 11th, 2007 6:05 pm

Could it be he’s just nervous? He’s only at 85 pitches. Granted, it’s been seventy-five days since his last start.

  312. Paul B on April 11th, 2007 6:05 pm

We want Joel. Bring in Joel.

  313. sidereal on April 11th, 2007 6:06 pm

“When you can no longer screw it up by talking about it, then you can talk about it.”

Which is. . whenever. Come on. . this site is a shrine to sabermetrics — Ditching the goofy received wisdom of baseball lore and replacing it with hard rationality. There is nothing — nothing — that you can say or do out of earshot of a player that will have any impact on that player or their performance.

So stop with the mysticism, it’s embarrassing.

  314. Dave on April 11th, 2007 6:08 pm

Francona has a sense of humor. I didn’t think this day could get any better, and then he brings in Pineiro.

  315. Goob on April 11th, 2007 6:09 pm

It’s taken me forever to log in, but I just wanted to mention that the Deer In The Headlights look Raul had on his face during that pop-up was absolutely priceless.

    God, I love baseball!

  316. LB on April 11th, 2007 6:10 pm

#313: I said that. You could interpret my comment to mean: you can talk about it whenever you want. Right?

Quote fro SoSH thread: Steve Phillips gives hope to as$holes and morons everywhere that they too can have fleeting success in a job that is way above their heads.

  317. Replacement level poster on April 11th, 2007 6:11 pm

Jose Guillen best move of the off-season?

  318. Replacement level poster on April 11th, 2007 6:11 pm

Jose Guillen best move of the off-season? Well for the Mariners anyways.

  319. ChrisK on April 11th, 2007 6:15 pm

The guys at Sons of Sam Horn are starting to bow before the alter of Felix. Some quotes:

The only out made in the air (pop up or fly out) by a hitter against King Felix this year was Youks pop up that Lopez made the nice running catch on. That’s it. Everyone else either K’d or grounded out. What do you do against that???

This just in: Matsuzaka is mortal.
This also just in: Felix Hernandez is not.

Thank god this guy isn’t in our damn division. Jesus.

  320. Oly Rainiers Fan on April 11th, 2007 6:15 pm

Big shout out to Emilio Carrasquel, Pedro Avila and Bob Engle – who signed Felix on July 4 2002.

Oh, and maybe at least a kindly nod to Pat Gillick, who hired the 3 guys named above and under whose regime Felix was signed.

    C’mon y’all, let’s feel the love.

  321. zzyzx on April 11th, 2007 6:16 pm

    Oh well… it was fun

  322. harry on April 11th, 2007 6:16 pm

    Dang.

  323. The People's Champion on April 11th, 2007 6:17 pm

    The jinx finally worked.

  324. Dave on April 11th, 2007 6:17 pm

    Screw you J.D. Drew.

  325. Replacement level poster on April 11th, 2007 6:17 pm

  326. Norm Charlton Fan Club on April 11th, 2007 6:17 pm

    Nooooooo

  327. adamt on April 11th, 2007 6:17 pm

I hate you J.D. Drew. Shouldn’t you be injured?

  328. Go Manures! on April 11th, 2007 6:18 pm

DAMN!!! Lets still enjoy it, this IS our postseason, afterall.

  329. Phoenician Todd on April 11th, 2007 6:18 pm

That’s what he gets for first pitch fastball… go Felix!!

  330. Slica on April 11th, 2007 6:21 pm

Im more annoyed with Boston fans cheering the hit.

  331. Replacement level poster on April 11th, 2007 6:23 pm

Alright have Felix plunk the first batter of the ninth with JJ warmed up and ready to go.

  332. adamt on April 11th, 2007 6:23 pm

Coco Crisp check swings to short stop and somehow got better wood on the ball than most hitters tonight.

    It’s SHO-time!

  333. terry on April 11th, 2007 6:24 pm

    JD Fucking Drew….

  334. Paul B on April 11th, 2007 6:29 pm

Felix 98 pitches through 8, on a cold night near the start of the season.

    That’s enough, I think I’d use Putz.

  335. KW on April 11th, 2007 6:30 pm

People, this is JOEL PINEIRO. Matsuzaka’s gone. It’s okay to come out and hit now.

  336. LB on April 11th, 2007 6:30 pm

“Felix is coming out for the 9th.”

    Don’t fire Hargrove.

    Lynch him.

  337. Jordan of Boise on April 11th, 2007 6:31 pm

    “Turbo!” *laugh track*

  338. zzyzx on April 11th, 2007 6:32 pm

With the 10,000,000 days off, and the fact that he’ll get an extra day off after this start, I’m not worried.

  339. kentroyals5 on April 11th, 2007 6:32 pm

Why bring him back out? Im not in favor of this!

  340. Paul B on April 11th, 2007 6:32 pm

Through 8 and a half innings:

    Felix .458 WPA
    M’s hitters -.002 WPA

Yes, folks, it is all Felix.

  341. adamt on April 11th, 2007 6:35 pm

Yeah, let him finish this out…

  342. terry on April 11th, 2007 6:35 pm

Richie might be the worst defensive firstbaseman around right now… nothing is really routine for him…

  343. adamt on April 11th, 2007 6:36 pm

    WOOOOH FELIX!

  344. KW on April 11th, 2007 6:37 pm

    Long live the King.

  345. apunetid on April 11th, 2007 6:37 pm

    Spectacular.

  346. Replacement level poster on April 11th, 2007 6:38 pm

Felix is our King. Long live the King.

  347. kmsandrbs on April 11th, 2007 6:42 pm

That was a good game to sign up for the free 5-day trial for. Felix is king! Now, if we could only snow out four games in a row all season long …

  348. fishiam on April 11th, 2007 6:45 pm

Game Score: 89. So King Felix has the two highest game scores so far this year in his two games pitched. Yessssss!

  349. David J. Corcoran I on April 11th, 2007 6:47 pm

    This Felix guy…he’s pretty good.
