Yep… just saw it on SC. He’s going to come back to beat us… well at least we get to see him develop into a star.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:09 pmThe cult of Doyle meets the church of Beane.
I’m a multi faith believer.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:11 pmWell, he’ll get the consistent ABs he needs, anyway . . . Man, and he’s just the kind of batter who’ll kill most of our pitchers.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:12 pmWow. Haha.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pmBeane brilliance!
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pmHappy that Doyle will get to play more often, not happy that it will be against us. Conflicted that he may not get to play much against us because of injuries.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pmWell, shit, that’s kismet, ain’t it?
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:14 pmI’m a very stressed person right now, suffering mild bouts of insomnia and being really, really stressed.
And it was this that finally got me to crack up laughing.
Way to go, Doyle.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:19 pmBilly McMillon Jr.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:20 pmfrom the Chronicle’s Susan Slusser: “The A’s did make a trade on Wednesday, an unusual one, sending outfielder Ryan Langerhans to Washington for former Mariners outfielder Chris Snelling, long a player the A’s have had interest in. Langerhans’ A’s tenure lasted all of two games; he was acquired from Atlanta on Sunday.”
so Beane picks up Langerhans for a PTBNL, and then two days later talks Washington into an outfielder for outfielder swap.

May 2nd, 2007 at 8:22 pmWhat even do I say at this point?
That was 2004. 2004. 2004.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:22 pmAwesome. Billy Beane rocks.
Too bad for those folks with Nats Doyle jerseys. Though maybe this gives them more collectible value… For the inevitable follow up questions, that’d be ‘purchase them through the As Team Store online’ (for some reason, people seemed to have trouble figuring this out earlier…it’s not rocket science
)
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:22 pmA Nats Doyle jersey has more value than an A’s Langerhans jersey.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:24 pmAlso, I know, off topic, but [deleted, off-topic]
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:25 pmgosh, with Piazza out for 4-6 weeks with his bad shoulder, maybe Bill could talk to Beane about getting Vidro to DH.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:27 pmSorry to rain on your parade. That’s OK. You can censor me because it is your site and you have every right.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:28 pm[]
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:29 pmwonder how much this would cost to have made into a large banner, suitable for hanging across from the executives box?
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:30 pmBeane would proceed to laugh in Bavasi’s face for paying Vidro such a high salary for such little return and the phone call would come to a quick end, Bavasi rubbing his bald head.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:30 pm14: I doubt they had time to make those up.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:30 pmoh, pretty much the same one Beane has, only going back to his days in Single A.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:31 pmMan, it’s like Beane is openly mocking the Mariners at this point. I think his next move is to order a bunch of pizzas to Bavasi’s house.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:32 pmPrototypical Beane player. Patient, good batter’s eye, draws walks, quick wrists, just everything the M’s need in a hitter but don’t know they know it.
Besides that, he’s got a cunning personality, awesome Australian accent, carries a Yoda doll with him on the road and a great middle name.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:32 pmI’m actually kind of happy about this. I never thought the Nats really appreciated Doyle. But the A’s will, or they will have to because all their players are injured.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:33 pmPizza Delivery Woman: Pizza delivery!
Centurion: [ more confused ] What-at?! I ordered no pizza! Did you, Lieutenant?
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:34 pmIt would be theoretically interesting to see how far Beane could get by continually trading up.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:37 pmYou wouldn’t understand, seeing that you haven’t even an infactuation with Spelling.
Serially, for me, it’s because he looks like a left-handed Edgar.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:40 pmCan we just have Weaver pitch to Snelling?
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:44 pmIs this a joke? Seriously, is everyone just messing around? I kind of feel like I’m in a twilight zone episode.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:45 pmDon’t forget the low salary!
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:47 pmI hate the A’s, but hats off to Beane. I just hope we can keep beating them and that Doyle gets his chance to shine.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:55 pmThe one bright side: this didn’t happen before the season, so we got through a chunk of our games against the A’s without Snelling in their lineup.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:57 pmI see the converstation more like this: Beane putting Bavasi on hold and then calling in his ads to have Bavasi repeat himself on speaker phone. Beane would then put Bavasi on hold and leave for lunch.
May 2nd, 2007 at 8:59 pmBaseball hates me.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:01 pmTo the dark side, he has gone.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:09 pmThere is much anger in this one.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:12 pmOh bugger. That’s bloody salt in an open wound innit?
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:21 pmI’ve just one thing to say:
Free Chris Antonetti!!!
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:23 pmOh sh!#. But I am happy for Doyle since he now stands a chance to prove that the faith we have devoted to his potential was worthy.
So Beane gets Snelling for essentially nothing. I’d be curious to know what Billy has offered in years past to try and pry him from Bavasi’s fumbling fingers.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:28 pmGo Doyle!!! I’m not surprised Doyle ended up in Oakland -he’s the type of palyer Billy Beane would love. With all those recent injuries, Doyle will get consistent ABs (at least for awhile), and hopefully he can use that to establish himself. I’m happy that now he has a chance to prove himself.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:31 pmI changed my mind … he now fills the Eric Byrnes role, both on the field and in the hearts of A’s fans.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:34 pmMy dad is a Nats fan, and I’ve been telling him how happy he should have been to have Doyle there. Now it’s too late.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:40 pmI’m so confused. I can’t believe he’s with Oakland now.
Is Doyle still “Doyle” or do I revert to calling him Snelling now? Where do my loyalties lie? Argh!
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:42 pmI feel really happy for Doyle. I also feel happy for us since Doyle is likely to help put more nails in Bavasi’s coffin.
The KJR guys were talking up the Ms this afternoon, saying there was reason for optimism. It is true that the Ms are better than last year, but isn’t rising to a near .500 team the worse of all possible outcomes? The last thing we need is for Bavasi to get a reprieve based on a mediocre performance from the Ms.
That will only doom us to the living death that Sonics fans have experienced over the past 10 years: not good enough to contend, not bad enough to force a change in the front office.
So, let’s go Doyle!!!!! And, sadly (or is that happily), I suspect the Ms will start losing again as their schedule swings back to playing real teams.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:43 pmhahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!! whew! Good luck Snelling, I wish you well.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:44 pmI absolutely wish Snelling all the best, but it feels as if it’s time to quit calling him Doyle. After all, the name arose as an effort to free him from the injury jinx—using it now feels a bit too much like an effort to put the A’s over the top. I genuinely hope Snelling never gets injured again, but for me he’s Doyle no more.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:45 pm…are idiots.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:47 pmsigh. and he joins Kendall in wearing the White Shoes of Shame.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:49 pmI liked Chris Snelling as a player because I saw what kind of player he was and knew right away that the Mariners would let him go and he would somehow wind up in Oakland. I am not surprised by this in any way and now feel even more nervous about this season than I already did.
May 2nd, 2007 at 9:51 pmAnd now there’s a huge opportunity for Doyle — A’s DH Mike Piazza is sidelined by injury for the next four to six weeks.
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:02 pmOnce again: Chris Snelling, I hope you turn into a star there in Oakland. They deserve it, and you deserve it. And I won’t even mind if you have to beat our brains in to do it. I hope you hit three HR in your first game against us.
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:05 pmFuck. Sorry, that’s as eloquent as I can be right now. Instead of reading box scores now I get to see him 19 games every year. Torture.
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:16 pm“They deserve it,”
Wait, what? What the heck is that?
The A’s deserve nothing. Nadda, zero, zilch.
They are a division rival. They deserve nothing. Least of all Doyle.
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:24 pm[]
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:26 pmwe get to see Doyle DH for the A’s while suffering through Turbo DHing for us…
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:27 pmHe doesn’t seem like the type to hold a grudge, but something tells me Snelling will end up with about a .450 career average against the M’s.
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:32 pmCan you imagine Doyle, Yoda, and Nick Swisher hanging out together? Man, that’s a party I want to be at!
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:34 pmDamn, I live in Virginia and he was the main reason I watched the Nats games on MASN…I’m miffed he has been traded to the team I hate the most behind the yankmes. What’s next Rafael Soriano to the A’s or Angels? Just glad Carlos Guillen is not in our division.
May 2nd, 2007 at 10:58 pmPrediction, before the end of June:
“Snelling pulls hamstring exiting taxi-cab - put on 60 day DL”
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:00 pmMark it down, July 26: the triumphant return of Doyle to Seattle.
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:10 pmEach time he gets on-base against the M’s, I will cheer…look straight over at Vidro in the dugout…then cry.
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:12 pmOf course I’m happy! I have a lot better chance of seeing Doyle again at Safeco as an A than as a Nat. If years and years of Marinerfandom have taught me anything (besides how to curse like a sailor), it’s that one must develop an appreciation for “Baseball”, and not just the hometown 9. That way lies madness. To say nothing of the dark side.
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:24 pmOn the plus side, I do have Doyle on my fantasy team this year. It’ll be nice to see him get some at bats.
May 2nd, 2007 at 11:59 pmThis blow, and the Snelling thing in general, is the most crushing feeling I’ve had in more than ten years as a serious Mariner Fan. Woah.
And Hello, Ancient Mariner!
We beat the White Sox? Rad.
May 3rd, 2007 at 12:10 am[]
May 3rd, 2007 at 12:14 amThe KJR guys were talking up the Ms this afternoon, saying there was reason for optimism.
There is reason for optimism. If you told me on April 1 that the combined ERAs of our 3 new pitchers would be 8.12 on May 2nd, Jose Vidro would be second on the team in batting, oh, and Felix would be miss a few weeks of starts to boot, I would have settled in for a long month of heavy drinking. 12-10 this point is lucky, and at this point, the team needs all the lucky it can get if it’s going to win a division pennant… so so far, so good.
May 3rd, 2007 at 12:56 amAlso:
M’s Runs scored-allowed
Games started by Weaver: 9-39
Everyone else: 84-66
And yet, he’s getting ANOTHER start in Yankee Stadium (lifetime ERA: 5.45).
Yeeeeah.
May 3rd, 2007 at 1:10 amI’d be curious to know what Billy has offered in years past to try and pry him from Bavasi’s fumbling fingers.
I’d kill to have that information.
May 3rd, 2007 at 1:56 amI really hope he gets some ABs and stays healthy, too bad it’s gonna be with the Rangers. He’ll go 4/4 every game against everyone in our rotation not named King.
Is this the record for most [deleted, off-topic]’s in one thread?
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:06 am[]
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:19 amI, for one, am happy as hell Doyle’s going to get the playing time he deserves. I’m sure part of Bavasi’s original intent was to help him get a starting job somewhere. Nobody could have predicted that the Nationals would be so absurd with their outfield roster construction this year, shorting out someone who was clearly more talented and deserving of playtime then the ones there already.
Go get ‘em Doyle.
(Just make sure you get those “flu like symptoms” at least 14 times this year… you know the times I mean…)
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:26 amWhen the A’s come to Seattle, and Snelling’s name comes over the PA system, what will the reaction be?
A) Small smattering of polite (and unispired) applause
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:44 amB) Large reception with clear ‘Doyle!!’ chants
C) Puzzled faces and whispers of, ‘Hmm…isn’t that a similar name as that kid we traded away? Ya know, the one we didn’t need because we already have Willie…’
71. Agreed being able to watch the Nats I was dissapointed that he didn’t get much playing time when Nook Logan went down, they put Ryan Church in center and called up some Casto kid..lately they’ve had Restovich playing LF. Snelling won a few ballgames for them this year..too bad the A’s have his grit now.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:48 amRe 72:
“A)” will be done by regular Mariner fans who know the team, but don’t bother looking much deeper then whether or not Vidro takes 9 pitches per at bat or not.
“B)” will be done by USS Mariner, Lookout Landing, and other Mariner blog members. Especially Deanna, accompanied with flashing.
“C)” will be done by Mike Hargrove.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:49 am‘logical’ == rooting for a DH hitting 315 / 357 / 391 while being paid nearly 10 a year.
Either own your own irrationality or discard it.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:50 amIrrational?
“Trade Doyle very argh Langerhans what not real Washington outfielders why OBP Oakland Beane thief very burn extremely!!!1″
That, my linguistically challenged, comment 70 owning friend, that is irrationality. Hopefully now that I have presented you with a concrete example of it, you will be able to utilise recognition of the phenomena to better understand the world around you. I would that this post has been to your benefit - bringing the light of learning and civilisation to the uninitiated can be such a burden at times, and I hate to see my efforts wasted.
To the rest of you people who actually know how to use things like words correctly: I’ve been expecting this for a while. At least I’ll get to see him live again/stalk him. Hopefully he does some major ass kicking as an A, baatting like a demon as his team collapses around him and loses a bunch of games.
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:01 amGraham’s an angry monkey.
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:12 amAngry like an angry duck.
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:14 amWhat is the proper jersey etiquette when the A’s come to town?
May 3rd, 2007 at 5:46 amCan a Mariners Doyle jersey still be worn in tribute?
How safe is Snelling’s job with Oakland? Is he just atemproaray fix?
When/if Kotsay, Bradley, and Kielty are all healthy they’ll join Swisher, Stewart, and Buck in the outfiled mix - with Piazza at DH too. That leaves Chris seventh on their outfield depth chart, although he’s probably a better, cheaper bench guy than Kielty. And they won’t (though maybe they should) release Stewart or Piazza to keep Snelling.
Snelling will either end up on the DL indefinitely or on waivers (he’s out of options) by the end of July.
May 3rd, 2007 at 6:23 amLOL!!!
Here’s a little game: Which of the other Mariner players would Beane have interest in??? A solid player that is cheap and knows how to work a walk. Maybe Raul (based off last year’s performance not this year)? I can’t think of anyone else!
Now, which Manager has had more success in the past 5 years…Beane or Bavasi? MMMmmmmmmmm….
May 3rd, 2007 at 6:43 amBeane reminds me of the guy that traded a red paper clip and ended up with a house.
Or at least, if he could trade with teams like the M’s and Nats a lot, he could do something similar eventually.
May 3rd, 2007 at 6:46 amIf Snelling does hit waivers this season, I wonder how many teams (if any) would pass him by.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:03 amI understand wanting the guy to succeed, but wanting him to get “revenge” against the Mariners is absurd.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:14 amSweet. I get to buy my first A’s jersey now.
Seriously for the last 2 years or so I’ve wondered if the Red Sox and A’s were really my favorite teams, and the M’s were my hometown team. I’m too old for this “you gotta be a diehard supporter of your team no matter how badly they’re run” stuff. I want to enjoy good baseball. This further confuses me :-), and I will buy tix for the next A’s series and cheer Snelling loudly when he is announced.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:29 am[]
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:31 amI’m so happy for Doyle. He deserves it. He’s gonna get a chance to play every day for a while and show the league he’s a good player.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:31 am82….oh yeah, I forgot about that guy! Wasn’t there a web site detailing his trade-ups? Google time!
Also, we should slow down the feeding frenzy just a tad here…remember, it is not the guys on the field’s fault that Bavasi couldn’t GM a girl scout troop. And wishing that Doyle mashes our pitchers and hoping for revenge is definitely rooting against the wrong dudes, IMHO.
I’m so tired of losing that I’m enjoying 12-10. I have a pessimistic side that sees the numbers and knows this likely won’t last. But then again, good Adrian hasn’t been around; Lopez is not performing up to potential; Richie Sexson is an albatross; and the Ms are still running out the worst starting pitcher in the entire MLB. Despite all this, we’re 12-10. This is a testament to the efforts of guys actually performing on this team right now…and I’m not going to throw them under the bus because Bavasi’s a moron.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:36 amHaha! Just moved to Oakland last Fall. Been to one A’s game so far and saw the Mariner’s win. Going online to buy up a bunch more tickets now. At the game, my wife asked me who I liked on the A’s and after Chavez, I couldn’t come up with much. Kinda like the M’s right now. The A’s just got a whole lot more likeable. Now I just need Beane to pick up the phone to the Braves again and get Soriano over here!
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:37 amI don’t get the Nats love for Logan or Casto either, but in the team’s defense Snelling didn’t do much to impress management during his brief stint in the lineup, and he hasn’t shown that he can come off the bench and hit (it looks like he’s 1-8 on the season in that role, with four strikeouts). He had the chance to cement his spot when they sent Casto down, and (unlike Church) didn’t take advantage enough for the team to keep one of management’s favorites in the minors.
Would I take him over Langerhans? Absolutely. But this is a big window of opportunity for him — if he doesn’t hit in Oakland, at a point in time where he should play every day because of the injuries, that will probably cement the perception of him as a fourth-fifth outfielder.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:50 amI know it’s heresy on this site, but have you all considered that Bavasi maybe knows more than the rest of us? After all, I was sad to see him go too, but Snelling was barely hitting Mendoza in the NL, and have any of you been watching Vidro lately? The guy knows how to swing the bat. Soriano has an ERA approaching 6,
Sure, we’ve considered it. We’ve also considered that one month does not a season or career make and that Bavasi has no clue. That said Vidro (who I would describe as “hot”) 315/357/391, Doyle 204/361/327; playing every day Vidro has 3 XBH and two came in the same game. Vidro has been better so far. Has he been playing like he’s $6M better. No way. I’m curious to see how this looks in a month assuming the A’s play Doyle every day.
Soriano has an ERA of 4 and is the Braves closer now. (At least, check your facts.) He’s had two bad outings where he’s given up 3 runs in an inning and has otherwise been unhittable. I’d take him over any pitcher in the Mariners pen besides Putz and it’s not even close.
May 3rd, 2007 at 7:57 amThat said Vidro (who I would describe as “hot”) 315/357/391, Doyle 204/361/327; playing every day Vidro has 3 XBH and two came in the same game. Vidro has been better so far.
Actually, looking at those two lines, I’d say they are fairly equivalent. Sure, singles are better than walks, but it’s not a huge difference. Vidro is making outs at the same rate as Snelling, and Snelling is hitting for more power (.123 ISO to .076 ISO). Snelling has hit 23.7% line drives so far this season, and Vidro has 18.1% line drives so far this season. Snelling has a PrOPS of .875 so far as compared to Vidro’s .741.
It doesn’t take imagination or irrational fanaticism to conclude that Snelling has been better so far.
May 3rd, 2007 at 9:11 amD) (typical M’s fan)….Who is he? He’s cute….let’s do the wave!
May 3rd, 2007 at 9:58 amWow. This is perfectly timed, seeing as how I just started reading Moneyball. Awesome!
May 3rd, 2007 at 10:01 amUm, no, Mat. Whether or not Doyle is better than Vidro is certainly a subject of debate, but Snelling has not been better than Vidro. I’m no Vidro fan, but…
Doyle: 11 Ks in 58 PAs
Vidro: 9 Ks in 98 PAs
Even if Doyle’s hitting more liners and producing more isolated power per capita, he’s missing way more pitches per capita. Vidro’s no star or talent, but he’s currently doing a much better job of putting the ball in play when he has to than Doyle.
May 3rd, 2007 at 2:07 pmStrikeouts aren’t bad. They’re no worse than any other kind of out.
In fact, Vidro’s awful speed might actually make strikeouts BETTER than groundouts, because strikeouts can’t become GIDP.
May 3rd, 2007 at 3:31 pmThe K’s = all other outs argument has to be one of the commonly accepted fallacies in sabermetrics.
Balls in play can become hits. Strikeouts cannot.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:04 pmRead your comment again, Gomez. You’re arguing that balls in play are better than strikeouts, which is obviously true, to support your first claim that a strikeout is worse than any other kind of out.
A ball in play is not any other kind of out.
You’ve got two seperate claims going on. If you look at a run value chart, you’ll see that a strikeout is marginally worse than a popup, flyout, or groundout. But overall, they’re pretty much all bad.
May 3rd, 2007 at 4:07 pmNow that Snelling is an A, shouldn’t we refrain from calling him Doyle? I thought the point of using “Doyle” was to avoid jinxing him into being injured again. Now that he’s an A, I don’t think we should be giving him good karma.
May 3rd, 2007 at 8:08 pmWe didn’t stop liking the guy just because the M’s made a bad trade. I hope he wins several MVPs and ends up in the hall of fame. He deserves it.
May 3rd, 2007 at 8:42 pm
