Looks like the Y*nks haven’t made the “Vidro adjustment” yet =)

    There goes the perfect game!

  3. mark s. on May 6th, 2007 10:18 am

#1 the Yankees are too busy thinking about their pitching to worry about our slap happy DH.

  4. Mr. Egaas on May 6th, 2007 10:22 am

    Did Mateo get demoted?

  5. hub on May 6th, 2007 10:22 am

YES Network says, ‘Ibanez, really a below-average fielder’. I know he’s not great, but thought he was at least pretty close to ‘average’. How wrong am I?

  6. Mr. Egaas on May 6th, 2007 10:24 am

I was thinking he’d made some pretty good plays this year, although I guess they look a lot more heroic because he takes forever to get to them.

  7. Dave on May 6th, 2007 10:25 am

Ibanez is a bad defensive LF – he makes the plays on the balls he can get to, but he just lacks range. He really should be a DH at this point in his career.

  8. Anthony on May 6th, 2007 10:27 am

On YES, Michael Kay just described Washburn as “a dead ringer for Kiefer Sutherland.” Uh, I don’t see it.

  9. ahhruff on May 6th, 2007 10:28 am

It took two games for the A’s to decide to move Doyle from the 9th spot in the order to leadoff.

  10. Mariners_World_Series_Bound on May 6th, 2007 10:29 am

Word on Lopez is a bruised ankle. Must’ve happened somehow on that run to first yesterday.

  11. hub on May 6th, 2007 10:30 am

So below-average range, good glove, average arm? Sounds pretty much how DMB has him rated. That is, ‘Fair’ range, with less than half the league average in errors (42%). Better than Big Manny at least (not saying much).

  12. Dave on May 6th, 2007 10:31 am

Range is, by far, the most important component of defensive value for an outfielder. He’s not Manny or Adam Dunn, but he shouldn’t be playing left field on a team that’s trying to win.

  13. nuin on May 6th, 2007 10:34 am

So far the Yankees offense seems Triple-A. Or maybe it is Washburn. I don’t know.

  14. hub on May 6th, 2007 10:35 am

Good discussion. How about for an infielder? Is range as important as the OF, or does the glove count for a large percentage of their overall defensive value?

  15. Mariners_World_Series_Bound on May 6th, 2007 10:35 am

Felix has been moved back again? It appears he’ll pitch on the 15th now. Can’t say I fault them for being extra cautious. If he goes back out there and gets hurt again someone would be on the chopping block.

  16. bigred on May 6th, 2007 10:35 am

Dave are you saying the BoSox aren’t trying to win with Manny in left field?

  17. Swungonandbelted on May 6th, 2007 10:38 am

4 — Yep, down to AAA

  18. DC_Mariner on May 6th, 2007 10:39 am

    16

the difference with the bosox and mariners is that Boston has enough money/front office competence/owner desire to win to overcome Manny’s lack of defensive ability by getting better surrounding players.

  19. billT on May 6th, 2007 10:39 am

This situation is starting to feel more and more like the Soriano injury a few years back where they pushed him back a few times before letting him pitch, and then after that deciding maybe he should just have TJ surgery. I hope this one turns out differently.

  20. ahhruff on May 6th, 2007 10:40 am

    #18
You can also add the fact that “range” in left at Fenway is completely different than it is at Safeco.

  21. msb on May 6th, 2007 10:41 am

    Willie in for Lopez today.

which led to some scary WillieLove from Rizzy on the pre-game.

hey, Dave & Mike think the Yanks are looking for a first baseman– think they’d like Richie? we could swap him for Alex

a columnist in one of the Cleveland papers was touting a CC for Alex swap this morning …

  22. DC_Mariner on May 6th, 2007 10:42 am

    20

Yeah that’s true too. I was just brain-storming a couple ideas haha

  23. Dave on May 6th, 2007 10:42 am

Good discussion. How about for an infielder? Is range as important as the OF, or does the glove count for a large percentage of their overall defensive value?

Hands and footwork matter more in the infield than they do in the outfield. Range is still the most important factor, however. I’ll take Betancourt’s range and errors over all the other AL shorstops who have higher fielding percentages, for instance.

Dave are you saying the BoSox aren’t trying to win with Manny in left field?

They have a unique situation with Ramirez/Ortiz both belonging at DH but having the offensive value to overcome their defensive deficiencies.

  24. bhsmarine on May 6th, 2007 10:45 am

    Sweet catch

  25. msb on May 6th, 2007 10:45 am

somehow, as Dave notes that both sides have the same numbers at this stage of the game, it just doesn’t feel like the Ms have the same chance to bust out offensively as do the Yanks.

  26. hub on May 6th, 2007 10:45 am

Thanks for the insight. Where would be a good place to begin the research of Betancourt’s ‘true’ range? I was surprised to see DMB rate his range as ‘Average’, and was hoping to find some solid statistical evidence to the contrary.

  27. Mariners_World_Series_Bound on May 6th, 2007 10:46 am

Chalk another one up on the “Ichiro is a bad center fielder” chart…..

  28. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 10:48 am

not a good time to be walking jeter

  29. msb on May 6th, 2007 10:48 am

hmm. Damon’s getting a little shaggy in the back there. Where is his Yankee pride?

  30. Dave on May 6th, 2007 10:49 am

Google for “Probablistic Model of Range”, “Ultimate Zone Rating”, and “Fan Scouting Report”. You’ll find some interesting stuff from David Pinto, Mitchel Lichtman, and Tango, all whoo have done a lot of different work on defensive value.

  31. hub on May 6th, 2007 10:51 am

I may be hung up by my toes for saying this….but I do enjoy ‘watching’ Jeter play. There’s something about the way he plays the game (even if the announcers completely overrate his talents). I can’t put my finger on the exact ‘what or why’, but he’s fun to watch.

  32. hub on May 6th, 2007 10:51 am

Well there is another hit and run scored for Doyle in an A’s uniform.

    Ugh.

  34. bp in dc on May 6th, 2007 10:56 am

Dave – Would you put Jeter in the bottom of the AL in terms of defensive ability? I know you’re not very high on him, which is justified, but I’d like to know where you’d rate him.

  35. Dave on May 6th, 2007 10:57 am

Defensively, Jeter’s one of the worst everyday SS in the game. Only Michael Young can hold a candle to his inability to turn groundballs into outs.

  36. Joe on May 6th, 2007 11:01 am

They played “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” when Matsui came to bat? i guess by the standards of the Yankees he is dirt cheap…

  37. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2007 11:01 am

Whoever that is broadcasting on TV makes me wonder to what degree a pitcher without much, uh, “stuff” can learn to get better results through pitch choice.

If Washburn has good command of location and makes good (better?) decisions about what he throws where and when, can he become a better pitcher?

  38. Dave on May 6th, 2007 11:02 am

This is by far Washburn’s best start of the year. He’s really hitting his spots and making the Yankee hitters chase marginal pitches.

  39. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 11:03 am

seems like washburn is throwning a lot more balls around the knees this year.

  40. Joe on May 6th, 2007 11:06 am

Washburn trying to fill Moyer’s shoes. Actually I guess both pitchers are doing that today.

So, apropos nothing, do you think fangraphs can give you a sense of how exciting a game was? The one for yesterday’s Padres-Marlins game looks pretty entertaining.

  41. bp in dc on May 6th, 2007 11:08 am

I sure do wish they hadn’t used all the offense on Friday night. This is pathetic.

This is by far Washburn’s best start of the year. He’s really hitting his spots and making the Yankee hitters chase marginal pitches

Nah, the Yankess are only a Triple-A offense.

  43. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 11:11 am

i think im gonna puke with the way blowers has been hyping up weaver this entire inning.

  44. bhsmarine on May 6th, 2007 11:11 am

Lets get some gritty RBI’s here Willie!

  45. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:12 am

Mwuhahahahahahaha … the Day Of The Doyle has begun.

Snelling batting leadoff for the A’s, who are up 1-0 in the fourth. He’s 1-for-1 with the lone run scored, and batting .500 so far as an A.

  46. tyler on May 6th, 2007 11:13 am

are we being penalized with this bloomquist crap for some reason? oh- lopez- ankle? cmon…

  47. Mariners_World_Series_Bound on May 6th, 2007 11:13 am

That was the grittiest K-looking I’ve ever seen. Keep up the good work Bloomers!!

  48. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:13 am

Oops, sorry, it’s just the second. And it IS against Edwin Jackson, which isn’t exactly the same thing as facing major league pitching.

  49. ahhruff on May 6th, 2007 11:14 am

A more entertaining option for Grover would have been to dump Vidro out there at second and let Gentle Ben hit in the DH slot.

  50. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:14 am

How does Bloomquist rate back-to-back starts when Ellison can’t get one? He’s got all of TWO at-bats this season, for crying out loud. He’s not that bad an offensive player.

  51. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 11:15 am

umm, can ellison play in the infield?

  52. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:16 am

No, but what’s so wrong about giving Ibanez or Guillen a day off?

  53. billT on May 6th, 2007 11:18 am

Oops, sorry, it’s just the second. And it IS against Edwin Jackson, which isn’t exactly the same thing as facing major league pitching.

Wasn’t Edwin Jackson a big-time prospect at one point? Anyone know what happened to him?

  54. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:19 am

Doyle takes a walk. I love him so, so much.

  55. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:19 am

#53: No control, no location. Another guy with “stuff” and no ability to harness it. Reportedly he has “coachability” issues.

  56. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2007 11:20 am

I was just wondering about Ellison myself, but looking at his career stats, he wouldn’t be any better in terms of taking pitches and on-base percentage.

Although both his BA and OBP are .500 so far this year…

  57. scraps on May 6th, 2007 11:21 am

If Hargrove gives Ibanez or Guillen a day off, I’ll bet it’ll be Willie in the outfield, anyway.

  58. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:22 am

Ellison is all-universe defensively, and on offense, a little better than Bloomquist. He can hit for a little better average, and if anything, is a better base stealer than Willie.

  59. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:23 am

Dave, what’s your take on Rasner? Doesn’t seem to me like he should be this successful with what he’s got.

  60. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2007 11:24 am

Jim: what happened to your evil alter ego? Or are you the evil one?

  61. urbancamper on May 6th, 2007 11:24 am

The funny about Doyle on the A’s right now is that they have him starting in center and he has more career at-bats than the left fielder and right fielder in today’s lineup combined. That’s some slim outfield pickings.

  62. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:25 am

I wish I could see the Devil Rays play a lot more. Who wouldn’t want to see B.J. Upton (who just homered off Blanton), Elijah Dukes and Delmon Young play every day? Plus James Shields is fast becoming my favorite “new John Lackey” pitcher. Don’t look now, but something very special is going on down in Tampa Bay.

  63. Joe on May 6th, 2007 11:25 am

Jeter is graceful. Humans are suckers for beauty. I’m not saying Jeter is beautiful (though I know he has his female fans who might), but he moves in a pleasing way. In the same way attractive people get promoted ahead of their plainer-looking peers, Jeter gets the benefit of the doubt on a lot plays like phantom tags. Jeter barely makes plays that a faster shortstop would make routine, but a faster SS makes the play with quick, jerky, less-pleasing movements — which in fact is why he’s faster. Graceful isn’t fast, but it does look elegant. And it’s more likely to get you on SportsCenter. As a bonus, because he’s slow, it makes for a closer call and so a more dramatic play. Jeter is all about the eyes fooling the brain. He’s like the old sportscars from the 30s or 50s: if you actually measure their performance on the track, they couldn’t keep up with even family sedan from today, but they look so elegant and fast you just assume they are.

  64. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:26 am

We’re both evil, Lauren. “Thom Jimsen” is my workplace alter ego.

  65. Dave on May 6th, 2007 11:26 am

Phelps should be called out – you can’t run over the catcher while he’s attempting to catch the ball.

  66. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 11:27 am

not to mention kenji wasn’t even over any part of the plate.

  67. bp in dc on May 6th, 2007 11:27 am

That was bush as shit. They better put one in his ear next time up.

  68. ahhruff on May 6th, 2007 11:27 am

Someone needs to light Phelps up for that shit. Totally unnecessary.

  69. Dylan on May 6th, 2007 11:28 am

Was that serious? He went out of his way past the plate just to run into him. That was horse ****.

  70. Dave on May 6th, 2007 11:28 am

Phelps needs one in the ear before this series is over.

  71. kentroyals5 on May 6th, 2007 11:28 am

I cant wait for Phelps to get up…head hunt that asshole

  72. jgwood675 on May 6th, 2007 11:29 am

Put Morrow in the next time Phelps is up.

  73. Steve T on May 6th, 2007 11:29 am

One for the Cheater’s Guide, video edition. Phelps better make sure his helmet’s on tight next AB. Not that I would ever want a player to be injured, or anything, but I’d like to see a bean ball connect. Hard.

  74. Mariners_World_Series_Bound on May 6th, 2007 11:29 am

The next time Phelps is up will make for some interesting baseball.

  75. joser on May 6th, 2007 11:29 am

Lopez got tripped at first running out a hit towards the end of the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s why he’s out of the lineup.

My question is: why is Joh in today? Will Burke get a turn tomorrow?

  76. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 11:30 am

this is arods perfect situation here. yankees up 2 time for a bomb!!1

  77. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:30 am

I would rent Joel Zumaya for the afternoon just for the next Phelps at-bat.

  78. pensive on May 6th, 2007 11:30 am

Ellison is used as defensive replacement. Question why for Guillen rather than Ibanez even if Ibanez made final out of previous inning?

  79. Lauren, token chick on May 6th, 2007 11:32 am

Man. There’s a lot of buried violence in this group waiting to emerge. Who knew?

Ideally I would like to see Phelps struck out and made to look stupid. But I guess our pitching staff is more likely to succeed at the hitting-in-the-head bit.

  80. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:33 am

Yes, but even defensive replacements gets 5 to 10 starts a year. Two at-bats every 25 games? That’s neglect.

  81. Steve T on May 6th, 2007 11:33 am

You gotta go with your strength.

  82. Jim Thomsen on May 6th, 2007 11:34 am

  84. Dave on May 6th, 2007 11:38 am

I bet the Yanks pinch-hit for Phelps – he comes out for Mientkiewicz for defense anyways, and they probably know he’s going to get thrown at.

  85. Karen on May 6th, 2007 11:38 am

Is it possible the ump has already “warned” the Mariners about retaliation?

I’d add something else snide about gift baskets from Tampa, but I won’t…

  86. sodomojojojo on May 6th, 2007 11:39 am

I don’t see an retaliation from any of these guys. Maybe Derek should send over a couple of copies of his book to the locker room. Or maybe when I finish reading mine, I’ll send it over.

  90. _David_ on May 6th, 2007 11:39 am

  91. Karen on May 6th, 2007 11:40 am

Phelps probably not only won’t be in the lineup next inning, but he’s probably already been optioned to Scranton-WB.

  92. joser on May 6th, 2007 11:40 am

Yeah, after that near-bean ball at Ichiro on Friday, I imgained something like this:
ARod, coming to the plate: Wait, Felix is coming in?
Hargrove: It’s just for one pitch
ARod: but I thought he was hurt
Hargrove: He can’t throw sliders. He’s not going to throw a slider.
ARod: And what’s with all the EMTs along the baseline?
Hargrove: They’re just here for one pitch too.
ARod: And what’s this crosshair painted on my helmet?
Hargrove: Just get in the batter’s box, OK? This is all going to be over very, very quickly.

  93. birankilla on May 6th, 2007 11:40 am

Time for Richey to step up the the plate and take 3 big ones.

  94. mark s. on May 6th, 2007 11:41 am

Try tellin’ everybody but, oh no
Little Willie, Willie won’t go home

Felix is big, young, and apparently rather, uh, passionate. He was on the top step after the Ichiro chin music, too.

Which raises an interesting question — which Mariner would you least like to face off against? Felix would scare me. So would Beltre. Sexson has reach, but he’s slow and I think you could just stay out of his way.

  186. IdahoInvader on May 6th, 2007 12:06 pm

When the audio starts cutting in and out like that, do you ever picture some guy at the control booth with a jimmy leg, foot on some wire, until the producer leans over and tells to cut it out?

Now let’s have a real fight. It’ll give the papers the chance to trot out the old “fired up” trope.

Phelps should be out of this game. He started it by deliberately trying to hurt our player even though it actually put the run at risk. Hit him again.

  189. Troy J on May 6th, 2007 12:06 pm

    About six weeks ago.

They really should merge with Trader Joe’s while they’re at it.

#253 It makes me wonder if Clemens, holding Cashman by the short hairs, asked for $1 more than $51.1 million/year prorated (i.e., the claiming fee for Matsuzaka).

It’s entertaining reading the comments by fans on the Yankee blogs. They are expectedly soiling themselves in glee over the Clemens signing.

The funniest comment, however, was by a Red Sox fan:

BREAKING NEWS: The Yankees have just added another 5-inning pitcher.

Any-hoo, back to the boring, never-do-anything-dramatic-like-announcing-a-big signing-in-the-middle-of-the-game Mariners.

I’m kinda pissed at the Devil Rays. Edwin Jackson is up to 115 pitches, game is tied in the 7th. he’s pitched pretty crappily all game. They leave him in. Swisher hits a homerun. Damn.

“Hey. If any of you are looking for any last-minute gift ideas for me, I have one. I’d like Bill Bavasi, Mariners GM, right here tonight. I want him brought from his happy holiday slumber over there on Melody Lane with all the other rich people and I want him brought right here, with a big ribbon on his head, and I want to look him straight in the eye and I want to tell him what a cheap, stupid, no-good, rotten, four-flushing, low-life, snake-licking, dirt-eating, inbred, overstuffed, ignorant, blood-sucking, dog-kissing, brainless, dickless, hopeless, heartless, fat-ass, bug-eyed, stiff-legged, spotty-lipped, worm-headed sack of monkey shit he is. Hallelujah. Holy shit. Where’s the Tylenol?”

  277. joser on May 6th, 2007 12:44 pm

If Clemens waited until September it might be too late. The Yankees are at the bottom of the AL East. Even assuming they get all their starters back off the DL and they’re effective again, they’ve got a hole to climb out of — and they’re not all coming back tomorrow, so the hole may well be deeper by then. And Clemens may need a few weeks to get into pitching shape, too. I am suprised he didn’t wait until June, but the Yankees may have made him an offer he couldn’t refuse. Will he be carried to the mound on a palanquin borne by oiled bat boys? Will they get a Concord out of mothballs to fly him out to NY from Houston for his starts? Will there be a separate staff of trainers, masseuses, and dietitians following him around? A uniform hand-woven from Imperial Chinese silkworms and a cup made from the fur of endangered snow leopards? Organic hydroponic sunflower seeds and a supermodel to crack and feed them to him in the dugout?

Anyone else read the article on the M’s “official” website about Beltre and how he appeals to the umpires about check swings??? According to Beltre, it’s all about being proactive….

  283. msb on May 6th, 2007 1:13 pm

hmm. Matt Pittman seems to think Phelps gave a clean slide, and that he was ‘already committed to taking Joh out’ — of course, he also thinks the Ms coach is Mike Holmgren.

  284. Steve T on May 6th, 2007 1:22 pm

Tough luck for the boob on Fox who’s about to deliver his report on where he thinks Clemens ought to go.

  285. JIMINEDMONDS on May 6th, 2007 1:26 pm

This was another predictable let-down game in which the Mariners seemed incapable of playing crisply, getting on base, or even catching a fly-ball. The offenive ineptitude that this team consistently displays is dismaying, and it starts with the light-hitting Ichiro and extends its way through the invisible Sexson down to the pathetic Willie. Further, does Dave Sims have to be so excited about the Yankees, Clemens, and what is going on at “The Stadium”? It is an example of the incompetence of this management that our own announcer suffers from “East-coast bias.” Get ready for the Yankee tomorrow night to shut us down again in his major league debut. This roadtrip is getting ugly.

  286. Josh on May 6th, 2007 1:29 pm

Heh, yeah, swerving at the last second, so far out of line (in more ways than one) that you miss home plate, and jousting your arm into someone’s neck already committed constitute “already committed.”

Ah. Looks like wikipedia staff thinks noting a disgusting play that could seriously injure or even kill someone is “not notable.” Maybe we should only hear the good things that sports players do, you know, to make them better role models? I recant on my earlier comment about its usefulness.

  287. Josh on May 6th, 2007 1:30 pm

Scratch the first already committed. I can’t write.

  288. planB on May 6th, 2007 1:31 pm

  289. msb on May 6th, 2007 1:32 pm

fwiw, Matt has changed his tune, now– dunno if someone showed him the repeat and pointed out where Joh was and where the plate was, or what.

  290. Josh on May 6th, 2007 1:33 pm

Oh, believe me, I know. Search around for various other public figures and you’ll find mentions of scandalous and/or stupid things they did that are irrelevant to anything but the incident itself.

  291. Josh on May 6th, 2007 1:41 pm

Box score says Hargrove was ejected in the 7th. Ironically it lists him between Proctor and Torre, not that the order means anything. Anyone know what he said/did?

EjectionsNew York Yankees pitcher Scott Proctor ejected by HP umpire Mike Everitt. (7th); Seattle Mariners Manager Mike Hargrove ejected by HP umpire Mike Everitt. (7th); New York Yankees Manager Joe Torre ejected by HP umpire Mike Everitt. (7th).

    #276-Anyone seen Cousin Eddie?

  294. Tom on May 6th, 2007 2:47 pm

I swear, this has to be the most deceiving 13-13 record I’ve ever seen. I mean, lets not kid ourselves here.

When we play the teams in this league that matter like the Angels, Yankees, Red Sox, and Twins. Can we win or even show we deserve to be on the same field as them? It doesn’t seem that way so far. Subtract the game Felix pitched against the Red Sox and the Mariners are:

    1-2 vs. Red Sox
    1-2 vs. Yankees
    0-3 vs. Angels
    1-2 vs. Twins

This team can’t hit, pitch, be managed correctly, and now it appears we have some defensive problems we have to work out. This team thinks they are good enough to win a wide open AL West, but what accomplishment would that be if they snuck into the playoffs with 85 or so wins only to get swept in Round 1 by Boston or New York?

This team will call this 13-13 record progress, I call it an excuse for not performing better and having this team not prepared to be better going into the season by the F.O.

I just hope we are in the middle of the losing streak that gets Hargrove and Bavasi canned.

  295. Tom on May 6th, 2007 2:48 pm

*0-2 vs. Red Sox without Felix

  296. metz123 on May 6th, 2007 3:15 pm

I’d be pleased as punch if the M’s win the AL West and make it into the playoffs. I’d be doing a happy dance if they were the first team to win the division with a record under .500.

Did you guys watch last years playoffs? Any team can get hot, ride an amazing pitcher or have a run of freak luck that get them a WS title.

We’re not a good team, but luckily for us we play in what is currently an incredibly weak division, with an added side benefit of only having to beat 3 other teams.

Yeah, we shouldn’t even be on the same field as some of the elite squads in the AL over 162 games. However, all we have to be is better than the Rangers, Angels and A’s. That’s our litmus stick for 2007. In order to get there we need a healthy Felix and a lot of luck.

  297. bhsmarine on May 6th, 2007 3:16 pm

294- I don’t think anyone could complain about a 13 game swing that gets us into the playoffs (your 85 game mark). Everything you said was true but how could it be bad to make the playoffs?

  298. hub on May 6th, 2007 3:34 pm

Assume the team does get lucky. Assume they do win the division. Assume the team does get a quick first round exit. Which is better for the long-term welfare of this organization?

Losing 90+, followed by wholesale changes in Front Office?
Getting ‘lucky’, followed by contract renewels in Front Office?

There are solid arguments for both sides of this debate.

  299. Tom on May 6th, 2007 3:56 pm

    #297–Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. . .let’s see. . .

If the Mariners make the playoffs and see there is “progress” being made on the field and people lining up for playoff tickets, then what do you suppose happens to Hargrove and Bavasi?

And plus, quite honestly what is the point of making the postseason where you don’t even have a team that’s capable of getting hot and making the World Series. If it isn’t a good team, it isn’t a good team. An AL West banner doesn’t really change that.

  300. bhsmarine on May 6th, 2007 4:38 pm

299- Who knows if the new front office will be any better? True, It would be hard to be any worse but the argument is there. Playoffs don’t mean Bavasi and Hargrove stick around either. Ichiro might stick around and if we go make the playoffs it means we have talent on the team. No matter what the case it is hard to have a winning team and complain about it. Only 1 team wins the World Series a year, it isn’t a new management, get rid of two players, add some free agents kind of easy thing. If you want another 99 loss season so you can pray then next guy is better go for it, I will take a pennant at this point.

  301. Karen on May 6th, 2007 4:51 pm

#296. I’d be pleased as punch if the M’s win the AL West and make it into the playoffs. I’d be doing a happy dance if they were the first team to win the division with a record under .500.

I don’t know about winning the division, but I don’t think you have to dwell much on their W-L record.

According to this calculator, the M’s current Pythagorean winning percentage at end-of-season will be .444, or 72 games (down from 76 games before the Yankee series).

  302. pablothegreat on May 7th, 2007 2:51 am

299: Did the Cardinals last year teach you anything? Any team is capable of getting hot and winning the Series.
