Weaver to DL for acute sucktasticitis

DMZ · May 11, 2007 at 5:02 pm · Filed Under Mariners

I mean, uh, shoulder issues. From the M’s:

the Mariners placed right-handed pitcher Jeff Weaver on the 15-day disabled list with right shoulder tendinitis. Left-handed pitcher Ryan Rowland-Smith has been recalled from Triple-A Tacoma to take Weaver’s roster spot.

Ehhhh yeaaaaaaaaaah. Shoulder tendinitis. Whatever, he disappears for a while.

What is the scouting report on this Ryan Rowland-Smith kid?

  2. DKCecil on May 11th, 2007 4:45 pm

An Aussie making his MLB debut for the Mariners? This can only end in career-altering injury!

  3. msb on May 11th, 2007 4:45 pm

does that mean it took 6 starts for it to sucktastatize?

  4. Axtell on May 11th, 2007 4:45 pm

I read that Weaver has been assigned to the bullpen to do relief work?

  5. Jeff Nye on May 11th, 2007 4:48 pm

Putting someone on the DL implies that they have a problem that you think can be fixed in a medical fashion.

Perhaps they’re going to try a witch doctor?

  6. Mr. Egaas on May 11th, 2007 4:53 pm

It’s a way to keep him around without actually having to use him. I like it.

Although, I’m not opposed to kicking him to the curb either. I guess this way we can still get some “work” out of our 8 million bones.

  7. eponymous coward on May 11th, 2007 4:55 pm

This also means they can send him to the minors for a rehab option once the 15 days are up… and I suspect that’s EXACTLY what they will do.

  8. Swungonandbelted on May 11th, 2007 4:56 pm

#2 only if they put up the stop sign as he’s rounding 3rd

  9. bhsmarine on May 11th, 2007 5:06 pm

What kind of stuff does Ryan Rowland-Smith throw?

  10. Ralph Malph on May 11th, 2007 5:08 pm

I would think Weaver could object to being put in the minors on a rehab option by claiming he wasn’t really hurt, but he’d have to say “no, I’m not hurt, I actually suck this bad when I’m healthy.”

  11. AuburnM on May 11th, 2007 5:09 pm

That is the right move with Weaver, but why not bring up Feierabend, or Woods? Let them compete with Ramirez for the 5th spot.

“Hey, coach? I think there’s something wrong with my arm. In fact, I don’t think this IS my arm.”

  13. natebracy on May 11th, 2007 5:15 pm

Ought I be concerned that Rowland-Smith is not on the Future Forty?

  14. brian_sun on May 11th, 2007 5:20 pm

    Bill Bavasi:

“Jeff is a guy that won’t complain about anything and just takes the baseball. It became obvious to us when he needed to reach back for that little something extra, his arm strength just wasn’t there. Once we talked to him, it became obvious that with some time off and a strength program, he will have an opportunity to return to the type of pitcher we know he can be.”

Bill, admit your mistake, he isn’t going to return to the type of pitcher he was with St. Louis last year. Keep him in the minor all year, or, maybe toward the end of the year, you call St. Louis again, and get a bag of beans from them for Weaver.

  15. Ralph Malph on May 11th, 2007 5:22 pm

Weaver has always suffered from chronic sucktasticitis; it is a progressive disorder which is often difficult (for some) to diagnose. The condition often becomes disabling when it is combined with large infusions of cash.

Mo Vaughn was a tragic victim of this disorder a few years ago. In his case it was manifested by bloating and immobility.

  16. eponymous coward on May 11th, 2007 5:51 pm

I would also point out that a decrease in velocity and effectiveness, from, say, a decent 92 MPH 4 seamer to 88 and straight as a rope would be consistent with an injury.

He was throwing pretty well last year in October- not so much now.

  17. DMZ on May 11th, 2007 5:52 pm

Yeah, but where’s that 92 figure coming from? The Fox postseason gun is way fast.

  18. Steve T on May 11th, 2007 5:53 pm

The difference being that Mo Vaughn was a great player once, and maybe earned a little slack to find out for sure if he’d lost it (or more accurately, still had it but couldn’t get to it in the rolls of fat). Weaver was a great pitcher for about an hour and a half about five years ago. Why is he still getting these chances?

  19. Steve T on May 11th, 2007 5:57 pm

The myth that Weaver was “great in the postseason last year” drives me crazy. He had a couple of good outings. That’s like rolling Yahtzee twice in a row — unusual, but it happens. It doesn’t mean you have a magical ability to roll Yahtzee now. Weaver, like all players, has a pattern of performance that is not a mystery at all. He stinks.

  20. Typical Idiot Fan on May 11th, 2007 6:16 pm

This wasn’t quite what I expected… except when I said “none of the above could be true.”

Maybe we should nickname Ryan Rowland-Smith “None of the Above” since he was the last option any of us really thought of.

  21. chuckm792 on May 11th, 2007 6:18 pm

So, can Weaver be traded or released while on the DL, or does he have to come off the DL to be moved? Just wondering what the rules are on this.

  22. chuckm792 on May 11th, 2007 6:21 pm

Oh, and I totally agree with #19.

  23. msb on May 11th, 2007 6:23 pm

oh, Jeff’s ‘talked about shoulder weakness off and on’, sez Grover. uh-huh.

  24. msb on May 11th, 2007 6:25 pm

    Hargrove describes Rowland-Smith, thusly:

“he’s a big guy who throws the ball pretty decently”

  25. bhsmarine on May 11th, 2007 6:27 pm

24- Is that Grover decently standards, or does he actually throw the ball decently?

  26. eponymous coward on May 11th, 2007 7:15 pm

Well, I could buy it if Weaver was posting Joel Piñeiro style 2K in 9 IP shutouts… but I saw last year’s postseason and now, and his fastball is definitely worse… and reminiscent of last year. Certainly not what it was a few years ago.

  27. Tom on May 11th, 2007 10:48 pm

Just watch, after Baek throws a couple more decent games, Weaver will come off the DL as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals.

    (Paging Dave Duncan!!)

  28. DiamondDave on May 11th, 2007 11:06 pm

I just love Bill Bavasi and Mike Hargrove. Know why? Because not only are they savvy judges of baseball talent (Billy Beane, you’ve got some serious competition here!), but also because they are so honest. They really lay it out on the table, with no tired cliches or double-talk.

Here’s my comments on the Bavasi comment from #14 above:

“Jeff is a guy that won’t complain about anything [except when he whines that “I just got unlucky and their balls found the holes”] and just takes the baseball [and throws batting practice]. It became obvious to us [much later than it became obvious to everyone else in Seattle] when he needed to reach back for that little something extra [a decent pitch that might get a major-league hitter out], his arm strength [stuff] just wasn’t there. Once we talked to him [screamed at him], it became obvious [again, at a glacial pace] that with some time off [perhaps a season] and a strength program [he probably wore out his shoulder trying to carrying around so many large bags of cash], he will have an opportunity to return to the type of pitcher we know he can be [an overpaid, overmatched piece of horse crap].”

  29. musial6 on May 11th, 2007 11:20 pm

I’m sorry you all had to have your season shit on by Weaver. It’s Boras’ fault, really. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who saw this coming…

    http://www.vivaelbirdos.com/story/2007/1/11/1316/31462

“So assuming we’re confident Weaver will suck on another team, why don’t we just wait for him to flop? Then we just wait for the phone to ring when that team tries to unload him (to the only club who could possibly have any interest in the bum).”

  30. Karen on May 11th, 2007 11:30 pm

    7. This also means they can send him to the minors for a rehab option once the 15 days are up… and I suspect that’s EXACTLY what they will do.

Or he’ll get moved to the 60 day DL…

  31. MickeyZ on May 12th, 2007 7:32 am

So is Ryan Rowland-Smith going to start? I wish they’d let Brandon Morrow start and plug this guy into long relief, but that’s probably not going to happen.

  32. nathaniel dawson on May 12th, 2007 11:33 am

Why would he be faking an injury? Most of you seem to think that’s what’s happening here, but that doesn’t make much sense to me. Unless Weaver just wanted to take some time off and sit for awhile, but that doesn’t seem very likely.

  33. John D. on May 12th, 2007 11:06 pm

This from AP (via ESPN) “Cha Seung Baek made four starts in Hernandez’s place in the rotation and went 1-0 with a 5.40 ERA. It was thought that he would take Jeff Weaver’s rotation spot. Weaver, 0-6 with a 14.32 ERA, went on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of shoulder tendinitis.

But Hargrove said Saturday he was pretty sure Weaver would have a spot in the rotation when he is ready to return.

[Great Scott! Glad Miller Huggins didn’t feel that way about Wally Pipp.]
