I know how he feels

From Baker’s Blog

“I like to go out to pitch every five days,” he said. “When you’re on the DL, you do nothing. I was so bored.”

Us too, us too.

Mariner fandom lacks something when Felix isn’t throwing. HoRam getting shelled? That HoRam is starting means Felix is only a few short days away. Why, you could almost — wow, that ball was hit ridiculously hard — count the hours until — another walk? — we get to see a good pitcher take the mound again.

Wow, low blow. HoRam just held the Yankees to 1 run in 6 1/3 with a 17/4 GB/FB ratio. Guess a guy with a unpopular skill set can’t catch a break around here…

If you haven’t noticed, we love groundball pitchers.

We just don’t like lousy pitchers.

    HoRam has a skill set?

Sustainable performance is simply more highly valued than one good outing. The MLB season is so long that really any one game doesn’t matter.

Though I would love to see if there’s anything out there that evaluates the net importance of games over the course of a season. Is there any sort of game weighting mechanic in relation to it’s importance to the season?

Suggestion for Derek’s “Things to Do” list – Activate the code that automatically filters out “straw man” logic fallacies.

I agree with the USSM opinion of HoRam, I just thought that the guy might have earned himself a reprieve until his next start. He finally pitched the kind of game that the FO thought he could.

I don’t know, just seemed kinda harsh. I guess I’ve got a soft heart.

I would’ve picked Batista, we’re paying him a lot more, and he sucks just as much.

    We have one great starter.

    One good starter.

And three guys who might be OK – or might not.

What do we think about the performances of White and O’Flaherty? Are they candidates for the rotation?

  8. Dave on May 16th, 2007 10:09 am

O’Flaherty’s chronic back problems probably limit him to the bullpen. White’s lack of talent limits him to the bullpen as well.

    So not really.

So is there an answer this year for 3-5 in the rotation – other than crossing our fingers?

  10. Dave on May 16th, 2007 10:14 am

The most likely answer is by making a trade. But I don’t anticipate the M’s doing something like that for another month or two, at least. They’ll let Batista, Ramirez, and Baek get some substantial time in the rotation before deciding which one of them gets the boot.

No, you misunderstood. I didn’t mean to imply that HoRam’s skill set = high GB%. You think I haven’t read USSM Orientation? 🙂

  12. AuburnM on May 16th, 2007 10:17 am

I think you are exactly right.

Batista’s on a 3 year deal, and he doesn’t have minor league options. He can blow pretty badly (like Washburn did last year) and still stick in the rotation.

I’m hoping we see Feireieribend before September. Probably won’t happen though.

Do you think the Ms knew about Cruceta’s juicing and that was the reason we dropped him?

    You’re right – I was a bit harsh and I apologize.

HoRam does have a Skil set.I think he has the 18V Cordless 4-Tool Combo Kit that includes the drill/driver, circular saw, saber saw, and the stud finder. He keeps it in his locker. (As if he needs a stud-finder in the clubhouse.)

Hargrove isn’t kidding when he says that HoRam has all the tools he needs.

    I love Geoff Baker:

“But the one thing they can do, when a pitcher is less-than-stellar and an opponent disinterested, is hit.”

  17. Jack Howland on May 16th, 2007 11:35 am

As far as Washburn and Ho-Ram’s performance against the Yankees goes, the Yankees are one of the worst hitting teams against lefties. Other than Alex and Jeter, the team is built with an extreme left handed bias.

  18. kwk on May 16th, 2007 12:24 pm

17: How do you figure? If you remove HoRam and Washburn starts from the Yankee’s “vs. left” numbers, they OPS .774 vs lefties, which is above league average.

  19. Jack Howland on May 16th, 2007 2:26 pm

18 – That is a good point. Giambi, Cano, Matsui, and Cabrera do not hit lefties well. In Giambi and Matsui’s case this is a more recent thing. Sheffield, who has always hit well against lefties, has been replaced by Abreu who doesn’t. When Alex is in a slump like he is now that seems to leave them vulnerable.
