Game 43, Mariners at Devil Rays

Dave · May 24, 2007 at 11:47 am · Filed Under Mariners

Horacio Ramirez vs Jae Seo, 12:10 pm.

Lousy LH pitcher vs Lousy RH starter. This should be fun.

Ibanez still not healthy, so we get Broussard in left field. And it’s time for another Adrian Beltre day off, so we get WFB at third base.

With a left-handed pitcher on the mound, we’ve dramatically reduced the defensive abilities of the left side of our defense. You know, the side that fields most balls hit by right-handed hitters. With a lefty on the mound, I’m guessing Tampa will have a few right-handed hitters in their line-up. (Yep, all nine Tampa starters are right-handed today).

I love how Hargrove doesn’t give this kind of stuff any thought at all.

Oh, and also, the Mariners have promoted Chris Tillman to High Desert of the California League. If he keeps his ERA under 6.00, it’s a great year.

MLB.com’s preview line for this game is “Mariners hope Beltre’s bat could lead to sweep”, noting his 6-for-9 lifetime record vs. Seo. I think Hargrove’s just spiting everyone.

  2. Sports on a Schtick on May 24th, 2007 11:57 am

I was just about to say, “Geez, not having Beltre bat against a lefty doesn’t make sense.”

Whatever, this game has bizarro written all over it.

  3. msb on May 24th, 2007 11:59 am

Horacio, on the road, in a Dome, with no real defense at 3rd.

so, either a blowout or a flukey no-no.

  4. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 12:00 pm

So I just noticed that Carlos Guillen hit his second home run of the game, giving him an OPS of .953. I know he’s not that great of a defender, but what is his defensive value, and why is his contract extension like half of Michael Young’s?

  5. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:02 pm

Well Detroit has done a bang up job so far against the Angels. GO M’s

  6. Mike Snow on May 24th, 2007 12:04 pm

Maybe they want Tillman closer to home for some reason?

  7. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:05 pm

The Michael Young extension was insane.

  8. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:06 pm

Maybe they want Tillman closer to home for some reason?

So his family can comfort him after he gives up 3 home runs a game?

  9. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 12:08 pm

I know Young’s extension was insane, but how does he compare to Guillen defensively (I know Young is terrible), what is Guillen’s defensive value?

  10. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:08 pm

Guillen’s defense is better than Young’s, but it’s not great. He’s a little below average defensively, and he’ll probably need to move off SS in a couple of years.

The bat is worth it, though. His extension was a bargain for Detroit.

  11. Mariner Fan in CO Exile on May 24th, 2007 12:14 pm

No excuses today. The Angels are getting creamed. Time to step up.

  12. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:14 pm

You can’t put a value on that… Ichiro is invaluable to a championship run. Trading him is giving up on the season.

  13. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 12:15 pm

    Ichiro is en fuego.

  14. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 12:15 pm

    Hey, another double from Vidro.

  15. DMZ on May 24th, 2007 12:15 pm

Wait wait wait… Jose Vidro hit a double?

  16. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:15 pm

So why is it that Dave N. doesn’t get excited when Vidro hits? Anyone else notice that? I mean..was it a good hit?

  17. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:16 pm

I like the way this is starting out!

  18. msb on May 24th, 2007 12:16 pm

hey, Vidro’s a Professional Hitter. He’s just doing his job :)

  19. Brian Rust on May 24th, 2007 12:18 pm

Good things happen when your 1-4 hitters collectively hit .300. Yeah, I acknowledge BA doesn’t mean much, the 2-guy’s BA is empty, and the 4-guy’s BA is a small sample, but still. Like I said, good things happen.

  20. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 12:19 pm

I already had post 14 written, I just had to delete the word “play” after the word “double” before posting.

  21. Brian Rust on May 24th, 2007 12:20 pm

Now, if we could just slide Mr.177 down a couple of spots.

  22. SpokaneMsFan on May 24th, 2007 12:21 pm

So is this the first time all year that we ran out Batista and Ramirez on consecutive days and both their opponents had a higher ERA? (not to overvalue ERA, but I have to laugh when I see 6.xx vs a 8.xx)

  23. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:22 pm

    Now it’s HoRam’s turn

  24. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:23 pm

22 – don’t laugh… we have a guy with 14.32 we may be running out there soon. ;)

  25. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 12:23 pm

It’s amazing to me that Johjima is only averaging 3.20 P/PA. It seems like every time I see him hit he’s seeing a ton of pitches. He’s actually averaging fewer pitches than Betancourt (3.53), which is hard to believe.

  26. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:24 pm

Speaking of Weaver, it would have made sense to give him a start in this series…wouldn’t it have? It probably would have helped his ERA a bit.

  27. SpokaneMsFan on May 24th, 2007 12:26 pm

24 – once it gets to double digits it’s not funny any more. :)

  28. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:28 pm

jesus christ ho-ram, throw it over the plate.

  29. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:29 pm

Can someone show HoRam how to throw a stike??? Or is the ump squeezing the zone?

  30. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:30 pm

    there’s your strike…

  31. F-Rod on May 24th, 2007 12:31 pm

any one else watching this from the cubicle?…Gotta love the modern world!

  32. SpokaneMsFan on May 24th, 2007 12:31 pm

So would it be a valid strategy to just send White out there now since they have an all right handed lineup? Cut our losses on another wasted start and heck Ho-Ram would be availble from the bullpen for a day or two at least.

  33. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:31 pm

    Yes via Yahoo

  34. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:31 pm

    listening…not watching

  35. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:31 pm

    /\/\/\/\/\ cube farmer.

  36. dks on May 24th, 2007 12:32 pm

That didn’t take long for the prediction of “weakened left-side defense” to play out.

  37. F-Rod on May 24th, 2007 12:33 pm

    Wish Dream Weaver was available

  38. DanO on May 24th, 2007 12:33 pm

    I really can’t stand Ho.

  39. SexsonPower on May 24th, 2007 12:34 pm

get ho-ram out of there! put in jason davis already

  40. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:34 pm

This is a bitter pill indead! How is Soriano doing???

  41. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:34 pm

    Rafael Soriano: 20 IP, 8 H, 5 BB, 19 K, 2.61 ERA.

    I’m just saying.

  42. bellacaramella on May 24th, 2007 12:35 pm

Does HoRam have any options left? How about a “shoulder injury”? Wow. Like batting practice.

  43. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:35 pm

    hey look! an out!

  44. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:36 pm

make that two outs in a row. that’s a streak… or something.

  45. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 12:36 pm

    I like these Rays announcers.

  46. Axtell on May 24th, 2007 12:36 pm

holy cow he retired 2 batters in a row!

  47. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:36 pm

That just makes the pill a little harder to swallow Dave!

  48. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:39 pm

Ya think we can get the Delorian from Back to the Future and go back to When Atlanta called about the availability of Soriano and lock him in a closet before he pulls off that deal?

  49. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 12:40 pm

Is there a statistic for most times staked to a lead only to blow it in the bottom half of the inning. I’m pretty sure HoRam would be in the top five of all time.

  50. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 12:41 pm

Wait, wait… we’re winning? That’s not right…we need to play from behind. Ahh.. there we go. — Horacio Ramirez

  51. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 12:41 pm

This has to be a situation where a bunt would be smart.

  52. DanO on May 24th, 2007 12:42 pm

Jesus, this may be the worst pitching matchup of all time. Maybe contraction of a couple of teams wouldn’t be a bad idea, just to get some of these turkeys out of the league.

  53. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:42 pm

i don’t know if The Ram has been around long enough, but he’s probably up there in percentage.

  54. Lauren, token chick on May 24th, 2007 12:42 pm

OK, this would be a good moment for Ichiro NOT to return to his double-play tendency from earlier in the season.

  55. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 12:42 pm

    Thank you Jae Seo!

  56. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:42 pm

Hmmm lets see which pitcher can suck worse. Gonna be a long game.

  57. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:43 pm

Way to walk our sub .100 hitter… that’s just terrible.

  58. bakomariner on May 24th, 2007 12:43 pm

i’m sure bavasi only looked at ramirez’s rookie year when he made the trade…on the bright side, as long as we keep it close, we will win a battle of the pens…their’s is terrible and ours is one of the best…we’re good unless ramirez keeps sucking…

  59. dks on May 24th, 2007 12:44 pm

You weren’t kidding about lousy RH pitcher. How do you walk a guy hitting .095 on four straight pitches? Or should that be why?

  60. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:44 pm

Lauren – Ichiro hasn’t hit into a DP all year…

  61. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 12:44 pm

On XM, the Rays announcers even seemed to insinuate that HoRam, as bad as he clearly is on the road, was maybe getting squeezed a little.

(Saying stuff like, “The pitch is just a little inside I guess” on multiple pitches)

Fwiw, ANY pitcher that walks Bloomy should be sent to some independent league

  62. Lauren, token chick on May 24th, 2007 12:45 pm

Aiighh J. Lo! This is one of those decisions, like marrying creepy Marc Anthony, I just don’t get.

Of course, I’m only watching via Gamecast. Was it J. Lo’s fault?

  63. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 12:46 pm

Well, we’ll take that I guess.

  64. DanO on May 24th, 2007 12:46 pm

Wheeeee, tie ballgame! The suspense is killing me!

  65. Lauren, token chick on May 24th, 2007 12:47 pm

Dave: whaa? Really? Wow. I must have been smoking the crack. I guess all the occasions I was thinking of were hitting into fielder’s choices.

I should probably burn some incense on the USSM Ichiro altar now.

  66. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 12:47 pm

How could it be J.Lo’s fault, unless he ran through a sign or made a bad slide? If it’s anyone’s fault it’s almost certainly the coach.

  67. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 12:47 pm

JoLo got a bad jump but should have been held at third

  68. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:47 pm

I have work to do and can’t get any done waiting to see what else will happen. LOL

  69. DanO on May 24th, 2007 12:48 pm

On the bright side, the M’s are taking lots of pitches. We should be feasting on the Tampa bullpen sooner rather than later.

  70. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:48 pm

how did bloomy score at home on the wild pitch and ichi not advance??

  71. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:48 pm

I like Tampa’s front office, but at some point, they have to give up the ghost on Jae Seo, Casey Fossum, and Edwin Jackson. Jason Hammel, Andy Sonnanstine, and Jeff Niemann would all constitute pretty significant upgrades at all three spots.

  72. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 12:49 pm

Wasn’t Seo something of a decent pitcher in the bullpen? Doesn’t Tampa Bay have something of a less than decent bullpen?

  73. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 12:49 pm

Ichi was only on first he did advance

  74. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 12:50 pm

What’s up with Edwin Jackson anyway? Why was he ever a top five prospect in all of baseball?

  75. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 12:51 pm

Dave, don’t you think they’re just biding their time until they feel like the youngsters are really ready?

  76. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 12:52 pm

Oh, guess my gameday hadn’t updated. Not that it mattered anyways.

  77. Axtell on May 24th, 2007 12:53 pm

And the streak of 3 outs comes to an end…

  78. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:54 pm

Edwin Jackson used to throw 94-97 with a hard biting slider. Then he got hurt, lost velocity, and is a shell of himself.

And Sonnanstine and Hammel are ready – they’re both low upside command guys who are basically Tampa’s versions of Cha Baek. Niemann could probably use another couple months in Triple-A, but there’s no way all three of them should still be there.

  79. Otto on May 24th, 2007 12:54 pm

    Good time for a DP

  80. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 12:56 pm

Hopefully Hammel stays A LOT more healthy than the last TVCC Chukar to be in the bigs…Jeff Zimmerman. I think Jeff’s bro was in the M’s organization for a few years. A lefty perhaps?

  81. Dave on May 24th, 2007 12:57 pm

Jordan Zimmerman, and he actually pitched for the M’s for a while.

  82. eponymous coward on May 24th, 2007 12:59 pm

I love how Hargrove doesn’t give this kind of stuff any thought at all.

Earl Weaver would be turning over in his grave, if he was dead yet.

  83. msb on May 24th, 2007 1:00 pm

Drayer had a brief note today about Broussard’s “going nuts” with lack of playing time

  84. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 1:00 pm

The score is headed for Seahawks/Bucs territory.

If the starters are left in passed the fifth, it may be more like Magic/Sonics

  85. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 1:00 pm

Any wagers on HoRam giving it up THIS inning?

  86. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:01 pm

    A lead!

  87. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:01 pm

This is nice, but we’re falling off the pace. We’re going to need 2 runs an inning.

  88. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 1:02 pm

First pitch dp to kill a potential big inning (which is any inning Seo pitches I guess)

That’s the M’s line up we all know and love!

Funny thing, the Rays announcers actually sounded surprised

  89. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 1:02 pm

    85

Any wagers that he actually DOESN’T?

    ;-)

  90. msb on May 24th, 2007 1:03 pm

    well, that was quick.

  91. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 1:03 pm

    90

So were those .300 obp asipirations for Yubet

  92. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:04 pm

Regarding the youngsters, I meant more like Longoria and Brignac and everyone, along with more improvement from Upton/Dukes/Young. I just think Tampa sees next year as their first real shot, and they’re not burning extra service time if they don’t have to. Maybe not, I don’t know.

  93. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:04 pm

I don’t think Vegas would cover that line #89

  94. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:04 pm

Okay, Hargrove is definitely scared. Or is HoRam injured?

  95. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:04 pm

Service time stopped being an issue about 3 weeks ago. If you hold a guy in the minors past the first week of May, he won’t get enough service time to qualify for a year of service.

  96. Mike Snow on May 24th, 2007 1:05 pm

    Sean White, already?

  97. eponymous coward on May 24th, 2007 1:06 pm

White’s in? This is interesting. Has HoRam just lost his job?

  98. dks on May 24th, 2007 1:06 pm

Hey, Hargrove did realize it’d be better to have a bad righty than a bad lefty against nine RHB’s.

  99. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:07 pm

That could be Ho’s last start for a while. He has an option year left. I wouldn’t be surprised if he went to Tacoma.

  100. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:07 pm

I’m sure White is an upgrade over Ramirez, but when are we going to pitch someone who’s struck out more hitters than he’s walked?

  101. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 1:08 pm

Sean White had a lot of warm up time. It must have been an injury to HoRam.

  102. dks on May 24th, 2007 1:08 pm

Oops, Crawford is a lefty. And Navarro switch hits.

  103. Mike Snow on May 24th, 2007 1:08 pm

    Actually, Crawford is lefthanded.

  104. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:08 pm

Well, they should bring ‘em all up then, see what happens. That and the Salty trade you were talking about. What an exciting team.

  105. bakomariner on May 24th, 2007 1:09 pm

what happened to ramirez? just sucking? i only have a box score to keep updating today…hate being at work on gamedays…

  106. DanO on May 24th, 2007 1:09 pm

If Ho goes to Tacoma, who starts? Weaver? Morrow?

  107. Dylan on May 24th, 2007 1:09 pm

    Dave,

Whatever happened to Edwin Jackson? He was one of the top prospects in the Dodgers system at one point wasn’t he?

  108. bakomariner on May 24th, 2007 1:10 pm

woods will probably come up for ramirez…did well his last couple outings…

  109. eponymous coward on May 24th, 2007 1:10 pm

Well, it seems like Sean White is more than up to the task of sucking as hard as HoRam has.

  110. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:10 pm

WOW…are we out there to throw BP? Dood…get some outs.

  119. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:16 pm

    Throw strikes! Navarro sucks!

  120. JMHawkins on May 24th, 2007 1:18 pm

    Tightness in his left shoulder.

    HoRam that is.

  121. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:18 pm

Are we trying for back to back walks for a .178 and .183 hitter???

  122. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:19 pm

Tightness in his left shoulder… sounds like Weaver’s injury.

  123. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:19 pm

We were better off walking him.

  124. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:19 pm

HOOK… GET HIM OUT OF THERE.

  125. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:20 pm

    This is getting obsene.

  126. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:20 pm

    Well White wasn’t the answer.

  127. rd on May 24th, 2007 1:20 pm

Good thing they traded that injury-prone Rafael Soriano away.

  128. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:21 pm

Uh oh. I was initially quite confident we would come back, but this isn’t looking so hot.

  129. bakomariner on May 24th, 2007 1:21 pm

there goes the sweep and only being 3.5 games back…this is ridiculous…

  130. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:22 pm

This is akin to the A’s bringing in Colby Lewis to get shelled by the White Sox, only this is our normal rotation.

  131. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:22 pm

How embarassing… getting clobbered by Tampa Bay.

  132. Dave Clapper on May 24th, 2007 1:22 pm

    And the D-Rays(!) bat around.

  133. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:22 pm

So much for an exciting game.

  134. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

I really was joking about having to score 2 runs an inning to keep pace…

  135. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

    Come on, end this.

  136. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

Not that this is an excuse but the ump is giving our pitchers nothing at all in the lower part of the strike zone

  137. soggys on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

Turning a perfectly winnable game into a laugher. The genius of Hargrove on full display.

  138. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

How many runs does it take for Mike to realize this guy isn’t having a “good day”

  139. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

Well, we knew that White would have the occasional total implosion…

get white the hell out of town…the cheap experiment (a good try by bavasi) has failed…

  141. jdsc55 on May 24th, 2007 1:23 pm

Not even a visit to the mound to let our bullpen get up and throw???

  142. KingFelix21 on May 24th, 2007 1:24 pm

how do you leave white in right here?

  143. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:24 pm

OK lets see another Crawford Triple.

  144. lokiforever on May 24th, 2007 1:25 pm

ugggh – when will it end? And will it demoralize our offense into quiet submission

  145. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:25 pm

    I can’t listen to this anymore…

  146. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:25 pm

Yeah, now go get him. Genius, Mike.

  147. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 1:25 pm

Yahoo says he left the game with tightness in his shoulder? I didn’t know throwing 70MPH fastballs could tighten your shoulder?

  148. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:25 pm

Can we fire Hargrove now, in the middle of this game, even though he is not really responsible for this loss, but just out of pure irrational anger and frustration?

  149. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:25 pm

    Thank GOD!

  150. jdsc55 on May 24th, 2007 1:26 pm

Haha now White has a higher ERA than Ho-Ram…

  151. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:26 pm

What’s the point of taking Sean White out now? We’re down 6 in a game we’re unlikely to win, we don’t have another day off until 2013, and White’s stretched out enough to burn through a couple more innings and save the bullpen.

    Leave him in.

  152. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:26 pm

As a sympathetic gesture, Sean White raises his ERA to above HoRam.

  153. AuburnM on May 24th, 2007 1:26 pm

Starting pitching. The key to everything.

  154. dks on May 24th, 2007 1:26 pm

3 of the 5 hits that White gave up were in Broussard’s direction. Just sayin’.

  155. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:26 pm

Only took Hargrove 7 runs to realize white was having an off day.

  156. eponymous coward on May 24th, 2007 1:28 pm

    BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  157. lokiforever on May 24th, 2007 1:28 pm

How many of the hits squeezed by WFB or fell near Broussard?

  158. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:28 pm

    What an ID10T… 3 runs, I can understand. 7?

  159. jdsc55 on May 24th, 2007 1:28 pm

151 – then toss him to the curb…

  160. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:28 pm

Still think Horacio Ramirez doesn’t suck, Auburn?

  161. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 1:28 pm

White was probably screaming inside for Hargrove to take him out. He’ll probably never recover from this.

  162. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:29 pm

No worries, this bugs bunny game will get better, I promise.

  163. SpokaneMsFan on May 24th, 2007 1:29 pm

115 – I did form word as a question, which I now have an answer of no to.

  164. Benno on May 24th, 2007 1:29 pm

Wow, take a potty break and 5 runs score. I agree with Dave, leave White out there and burn him up. Then send him back to Atlanta. Pocket the $25k and have a late lunch. Leave a good tip.

  165. DanO on May 24th, 2007 1:29 pm

OK, that was pretty spectacular. The funny thing is, though, with Tampa’s pitching, this game’s really not over yet.

  166. SpokaneMsFan on May 24th, 2007 1:29 pm

I did word it, not form word

  167. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 1:29 pm

Seo will probably pitch shutout baseball from here on out knowing he’s got a easy win locked up.

  168. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 1:30 pm

Over/under 26 total runs in this game?

  169. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:30 pm

    Over.

  170. JMHawkins on May 24th, 2007 1:31 pm

    Bad day for Carlos Garcia.

  171. AuburnM on May 24th, 2007 1:31 pm

    #160
Yes. I think he is a marginal #5 starter. “Suck” is what we just saw from White.

  172. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:31 pm

    Oh my goodness… we’re down 6!

  173. UofMichgoMs on May 24th, 2007 1:31 pm

    Fire Carlos Garcia!

  174. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:31 pm

Good lord. Why would you send Lopez there?

  175. msb on May 24th, 2007 1:31 pm

gosh, remember when Mesa & Mabry gave up 11 runs in an inning in Tampa?

today has been a bad day for Garcia.

  176. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:32 pm

168 it will only take two innings to reach that threshold.

  177. DMZ on May 24th, 2007 1:32 pm

Holy shit, I can’t remember the last time I heard Dave go off like that. Wow.

  178. KingFelix21 on May 24th, 2007 1:32 pm

we have by far the worst 3rd base coach in baseball. I was saying it all last year, i have never seen a team thrown out at home more than us ever.

  179. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 1:32 pm

    1 pitch out… lovin it.

  180. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:32 pm

Aaaaaaaahhhhhh! Bloomquist, I shake my fist at you.

  181. AuburnM on May 24th, 2007 1:32 pm

Days like today make you appreciate Batista, Baek and Washburn. Not dominant, but not disasterous.

  182. Dave Clapper on May 24th, 2007 1:33 pm

    wtf?!?!

  183. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:33 pm

Horacio Ramirez is a marginal #5 starter on a Triple-A team.

  184. Dylan on May 24th, 2007 1:33 pm

Hey DMZ, what did Dave say? I love hearing him be old and angry.

  185. DanO on May 24th, 2007 1:33 pm

Seo is looking relaxed, tanned, and rested after that last inning.

  186. Axtell on May 24th, 2007 1:34 pm

So Lopez has been thrown out at home twice this game?

Good god, what’s going on in that third base coach’s head?

  187. _David_ on May 24th, 2007 1:34 pm

    I’m speechless.

  188. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 1:35 pm

When the starting pitcher’s name is Ho Ram, well, somebody’s getting fucked.

  189. Pete on May 24th, 2007 1:36 pm

Holy moly. I’m only watching on GameCast, and getting thrown out trying to stretch a triple into a homer in a 6-run game looks reeeally bad. I can’t believe it comes through that clearly when I’m not even watching the game. Wow.

  190. JMHawkins on May 24th, 2007 1:36 pm

Garcia has a AVGFOB of 15 so far this game, according to Niehaus.

  191. DMZ on May 24th, 2007 1:37 pm

Let me attempt to do my best rendition:

    “Lopez is rounding third–”
Dead-to-me tone: “And he’s out by twenty feet.”
Increasingly angry: “Why in the world they sent him home, don’t ask me, I thought he might have a chance at it but when he was coming into third… (long rant)”

  192. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:38 pm

Who’s watching on MLB TV? The Rays announcers are hilarious. The bit about the newspaper ad with a family wearing 1 Bucs hat, 1 Lightning hat, and 1 Yankees hat…

    I really like these guys.

  193. don52656 on May 24th, 2007 1:39 pm

The only explanation is that Bloomquist was on deck and Garcia absolutely knew that the only was for Lopez to score was to wave him on.

    Otherwise, the inning goes like:

    Bloomquist pops out.
    Ichiro is intentionally walked.
Vidro hits to another double play.

  194. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 1:40 pm

when the announcers say “7 runs in 2/3 of an inning”
    I die inside.

  195. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:40 pm

And here we go for round 2

  196. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:41 pm

193, that kind of logic might work against not-Seo with a non-TB defense behind him. But in this situation, I think it’s that much more indefensible.

  197. don52656 on May 24th, 2007 1:42 pm

After 4 innings, the M’s have brought 19 players to the plate and seen 60 pitches. That’s 3.16 pitches per plate appearance. And I’ll bet that it goes down for the rest of the game, because it’s time to get out of town….

  198. apunetid on May 24th, 2007 1:42 pm

What’s with the Devil Rays and triples?

  199. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:42 pm

And this, my friends, is why we’re tied for 2nd despite the crappy run differential.

  200. Otto on May 24th, 2007 1:43 pm

Hey lets put WFB in to pitch maybe he can stress his elbow and save him fro Hargrove use.

  201. don52656 on May 24th, 2007 1:43 pm

196, believe me, I wasn’t trying to defend him. My post was intended to be quite tongue in cheek. TB probably wouldn’t have walked Ichiro with a 6-run lead anyway!

  202. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 1:44 pm

Is this not a lesson in why the bullpen is not starting pitching?
    Not even bad starting pitching?
    Die Hargrove.

  203. DKCecil on May 24th, 2007 1:45 pm

The Rays are gonna hit 20, I can feel it.

  204. don52656 on May 24th, 2007 1:45 pm

Actually, we are tied for 2nd because:

    1. Texas has been awful.
    2. Oakland has 11 players on the disabled list.

  205. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:47 pm

    Well, yeah, that too.

  206. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 1:47 pm

A taste of what we’ll see with Weaver in the bullpen.

  207. sad_loyal_fan on May 24th, 2007 1:49 pm

Hard to complain with an 8 run deficit, but that pitch to Wilson on the 3-2 looked pretty good from my cheap seat. Apparently, Joh thought so too.

  208. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:49 pm

It took Sean White and Jason Davis 77 pitches to get through two innings.

  209. vj on May 24th, 2007 1:49 pm

Wow, I left for 20 minutes and Tampa scores 9 runs. Impressive.

  210. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:51 pm

So who is the most likely starting CFer for Tampa next year? Upton? Dukes? Crawford?

  211. Tek Jansen on May 24th, 2007 1:51 pm

Let’s assume and hope that Ramirez misses some starts. Who gets the spot in the rotation?

  212. Dylan on May 24th, 2007 1:52 pm

Broussard making a case for everyday action.

  213. JMHawkins on May 24th, 2007 1:52 pm

It took Sean White and Jason Davis 77 pitches to get through two innings.

Next time, let’s sign them to contracts that pay by the out, not by the pitch.

  214. Dave on May 24th, 2007 1:53 pm

It should be Upton. He really doesn’t belong at 2nd base defensively.

  215. Lauren, token chick on May 24th, 2007 1:53 pm

Ugh. I mistakenly went to grab lunch. Or maybe it was better not to know this was happening while it was happening.

    Hey! Broussard’s 3 for 3!

  216. Joe Bag o' Doughnuts on May 24th, 2007 1:53 pm

At least Sexson has bumped up his batting average to .175! WOOOO!

  217. msb on May 24th, 2007 1:54 pm

    Hey! Broussard’s 3 for 3!

    which means he sits tomorrow.

  218. don52656 on May 24th, 2007 1:55 pm

Food for thought…Richie Sexson’s pitches per at bat and batting average during his career:

    99 3.72 .255
    00 3.99 .272
    01 3.93 .271
    02 3.83 .279
    03 3.96 .272
    04 3.97 .233
    05 3.98 .263
    06 3.95 .264
    07 3.62 .177

2004 was the year Richie was hurt and only had 90 AB’s, so it’s a small sample size. It seems likely that Richie’s problems might directly correlate with his patience at the plate.

  219. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:55 pm

But you think he’ll be good in center? Do both Dukes and Crawford end up with starting jobs next year? In Tampa?

  220. robbbbbb on May 24th, 2007 1:55 pm

Let’s not give up hope, here. The M’s are down by 8 in the bottom of the fifth, but:

    (1) This is Tropicana Field, and the ball flies pretty well there and

    (2) This is the D-Rays, and their relievers suck.

The M’s have a chance to get back in this game. They just need to grab onto it in the next inning or two.

  221. ChrisK on May 24th, 2007 1:57 pm

Dave – if Ramirez goes down with a mysterious DL-inducing shoulder injury like Weaver did, shouldn’t MLB investigate the veracity of these injuries? At least in the case of Weaver, everyone knows he’s not hurt. Don’t the Mariners have to validate these injuries in some way? Or is it the equivalent or just providing a doctor’s note? It’s amazing that teams can just hide players on the DL like that.

  222. msb on May 24th, 2007 1:58 pm

sigh. apparently the Hancock family doesn’t believe in personal responsibility

  223. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 1:58 pm

Yeah, Sexson. That was pretty nice.

  224. msb on May 24th, 2007 2:00 pm

Dave – if Ramirez goes down with a mysterious DL-inducing shoulder injury like Weaver did, shouldn’t MLB investigate the veracity of these injuries?

it seems unlikely that Hargrove would try to burn through his bullpen with 13 more games to go on the road trip, unless there was an injury

  225. don52656 on May 24th, 2007 2:00 pm

After 5 innings….23 batters, 72 pitches. 3.13 per plate appearance.

  226. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 2:01 pm

    224- does it?
    Hargrove is a fool.

  227. apunetid on May 24th, 2007 2:01 pm

    Comeback time!

  228. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:02 pm

    Come on, Lopez…

  229. Wood Dog on May 24th, 2007 2:02 pm

don’t look now, but the tying run is only 6 batters away.

  230. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:03 pm

Upton is a goofy looking mofo, and goofy running, and goofy diving…

  231. msb on May 24th, 2007 2:04 pm

so from now on does Garcia over-do the stop sign?

  232. DMZ on May 24th, 2007 2:04 pm

I’ve talked about the DL issue before, but the short answer is no, nothing will happen.

  233. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:04 pm

The Devil Rays are totally in Garcia’s head.

  234. Lauren, token chick on May 24th, 2007 2:05 pm

Niiiice. Did you see the numbers on Betancourt with RISP, btw? Pretty impressive.

    The Bloomstick!

  236. JMHawkins on May 24th, 2007 2:05 pm

Corco is coming in for the D-Rays?

  237. Choska on May 24th, 2007 2:05 pm

Just to put Ho Ram’s line in perspective to Soriano’s, Ho Ram has 14 Ks in his 40 IPs, compared to Soriano’s 19 Ks in 20 IPs.

The other GMs must have been falling all over each other to trade with the Mariner’s front office last winter. Me, I just want to play a little poker with them.

I’m really surprised the Mariner’s owners don’t insist on approving every single deal Bavasi does. In every company I’ve ever been around guys who waste millions of dollars repeatedly on bad deals don’t get to keep making those deals for long.

Could we see a change in the front office after the trading deadline, or will they last until the last out of the season?

  238. apunetid on May 24th, 2007 2:05 pm

And Willie raises his average 27 points!

  239. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:06 pm

So, despite being pretty horrible, does this still count as Seo unsustainably stranding runner, considering all the hits he gave up?

  240. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 2:06 pm

If the Rays were smart they’d intentionally walk Ichiro right now.

  241. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:07 pm

237, I think it’s quite likely the ownership had soured on Soriano as well, and Snelling for that matter though it’s not exactly related.

  242. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 2:07 pm

    237-
I suspect the front office agrees with Bavassi’s moves, and thinks it’s just bad luck

  247. robbbbbb on May 24th, 2007 2:09 pm

Well, at least Vidro can’t GIDP now.

  248. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 2:10 pm

  252. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 2:12 pm

Did vidro just hit the ball past the infield?

  253. Wood Dog on May 24th, 2007 2:13 pm

    ahh gotcha.

To think I almost turned this game off…

  254. Mr. Egaas on May 24th, 2007 2:13 pm

It’s definitely not over yet. The TB pen is horrible and the M’s have 11 outs to go.

  255. Mr. Egaas on May 24th, 2007 2:13 pm

    …10 outs to go.

The M’s need to find a way to get Broussard in the line-up 5 times a week.

  256. gwangung on May 24th, 2007 2:14 pm

Of course it’s not bad luck, but the management group isn’t baseball savvy enough (except, perhaps, for Chris Larson) to realize that.

  257. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 2:15 pm

254 who’s to say the Rays don’t pad their lead even more…it’s not like our bullpen has been spectacular today either.

  258. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:15 pm

This at-bat does not look easy for Broussard.

  259. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 2:19 pm

Is it not clear from my post that the FO thinks it’s bad luck, and not I?
Trading Soriano for a Ho was so stupid I hurt myself pounding on the desk when I read about it.
Hargrove thought it was killer tho’

  260. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:19 pm

So what do you think goes through Bavasi’s head watching his acquisitions from this winter? He must realize now that the Soriano thing wasn’t a good idea, even if he’s still happy with Vidro, though I imagine his throught process with Weaver is/was much like ours… something like “eh, why not?”

  261. Benno on May 24th, 2007 2:19 pm

The good news is that I may be able to catch the end of the game by the time I leave the office. The bad news is that I’m eaving the office at 6pm, pst. Go M’s!?!?

  262. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:21 pm

Sexson has been tagging guys out on bad throws really well. Is that something that most first basemen can do just fine? I feel like I don’t see it that much, but maybe throws to first aren’t off often enough.

  263. bakomariner on May 24th, 2007 2:21 pm

i just can’t believe the Angels got so creamed and then we did too…by the fucking d-rays…we still have nine outs! GO Ms!

  264. robbbbbb on May 24th, 2007 2:22 pm

262: He does that pretty well. The master of getting to balls like that was John Olerud. I’d never seen someone quite so smooth in the infield at catching throws off-line and doing something positive with them.

  265. bakomariner on May 24th, 2007 2:23 pm

scary to think that we might be winning this game if ramirez actually stayed in…white killed us…

  266. Wood Dog on May 24th, 2007 2:24 pm

There are some GREAT stats I should try to gig up on how Olerud improved his infield’s fielding percentage more than almost any other first basemen. He was the master.

  267. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 2:25 pm

well, that is ONE way to be sure you don;t get thrown out at home.

Trading Soriano for a Ho was so stupid I hurt myself pounding on the desk when I read about it. Hargrove thought it was killer tho’

he did? I don’t recall him ever talking about it when it happened.

We definitely look more patient up there. I really liked how after Yuni got walked Jose Lopez took the strike after working the count 2-0. This series i feel we have definitely shown a lot more patience; even though the rays pitching is horrible.

  299. msb on May 24th, 2007 2:36 pm

hmmm, it was also Dreckman who called Guillen out monday vs Cleveland, when they had a chance to take the lead

  300. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:36 pm

297, Devil Rays announcers agree. I don’t think it was such a bad call, but yeah he was probably safe.

  301. darrylzero on May 24th, 2007 2:36 pm

This is the most inconsistent strike zone I’ve seen in quite a while.

  302. robbbbbb on May 24th, 2007 2:36 pm

294: I’ve got no problem with Bloomquist as a base coach. The first base coach’s responsibilities often include base-running, and WFB is a good baserunner. It’s about his only baseball skill, but he does run and steal well.

  303. F-Rod on May 24th, 2007 2:39 pm

extremely close call..Maybe a tie maybe out…usually goes against the runner on those…he hit the middle end of the bag…if he had hit the front he would have been safe

    AAAaarrrrgh

  305. Bender on May 24th, 2007 2:39 pm

  306. joser on May 24th, 2007 2:42 pm

You know, if Yuni could keep up this kind of walk rate he’d be a great candidate for the #2 spot. Move Vidro down, way down, bring Joh up to bat 3rd.

Unfortunately, the M’s aren’t going to face Ray’s-bullpen-”quality” pitching the rest of the season.

  307. Beniitec on May 24th, 2007 2:43 pm

Only a Hargrove coached team could find a way to lose to TB while scoring TWELVE runs, lol

I honestly can’t even imagine how many mistakes there were. You know, like the Garcia abortions, the dp’s, not getting runners from third home w/ less than two outs, Guillen catching Sexson’s disease, leaving AA quality Sean White in for too long…sigh

Like I said…only the M’s. I mean you can’t say it would happen to the D-Rays, lol

  361. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 3:28 pm

    356

Grover is responsible for in game management decisions. Obviously he didn’t address the FIRST Garcia screw up well enough to prevent the 2nd one. And obviously Grover will let him keep on coachin’ after this.

Plus, four walks is actually good for US.

Sad, sad state of affairs. The Angels were just begging us to gain a game and we just wouldn’t take the charity. Not from them or the D-Rays.

  362. D Truth on May 24th, 2007 3:29 pm

You all had to know that home run in the eighth was going to be the Mariners’ demise, after they rallied back within two runs.

The Ichiro two out, 2-run homer in the ninth makes it perfect. That’s Mariner baseball.

  363. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 3:30 pm

You can’t expect Grover to have a heart to heart with Garcia in the dugout during a game. In front of the team.

  370. Gomez on May 24th, 2007 3:36 pm

Oh, and also, the Mariners have promoted Chris Tillman to High Desert of the California League. If he keeps his ERA under 6.00, it’s a great year.

Aaron Cotter, Marwin Vega, Nicholas Allen, Jose Escalona, Austin Bibens-Dirkx and Roman Martinez all say hi. And most of those guys aren’t exactly bright prospects.

I think Tillman’s numbers will actually look passable. The space park isn’t destroying the pitching staff as much as the park factor would suggest. Sure, Tillman’s still developing and he may get taken deep on a couple flyballs that would stay in most yards, but an ERA in the 4’s is not improbable.

  371. IdahoInvader on May 24th, 2007 3:40 pm

    363

No, you worry about hurting his pride and let him do it AGAIN. There are clubhouses to take him aside for a kindly “chat.” Or at least ask him for SOME sort of “explanation.”

Believe me, with Grover, I’d expect nothing more or less than well…NOTHING from him.

  372. D Truth on May 24th, 2007 3:43 pm

Not blaming O’Flaherty. White takes the loss, for good reason. Or Hargrove for watching while his pitcher gives up six hits and seven runs in 2/3s of an inning.

The Mariners were lucky to be in that situation. But, it’s almost like Ichrio had to hit that 2-run home run so we could look back at that eighth inning homer and wonder … what if?

Again, that’s Mariner Baseball. They want to refuse to lose, but they can’t find a way to win without running into trouble.

  373. DizzleChizzle on May 24th, 2007 3:45 pm

It’s good to see them make a valiant effort to come back, despite many missed opportunities to actually win the game, and then to lose by only one run. I would hate for them to break the norm.

  374. Ralph Malph on May 24th, 2007 3:45 pm

If you’ve ever managed anybody you know you don’t reprimand or question a subordinate in front of other subordinates.

Nor can a manager and his coach go into the clubhouse during a game. It’s just not possible.

Obviously Garcia misjudged both situations. He didn’t choose to send Lopez to be out by 20 feet. There is no explanation other than that he judged it wrong.

  375. Bender on May 24th, 2007 3:45 pm

So are we hoping that Ramirez is ok, or that we get some kind of replacement?

I can’t think of who we could bring up that would be any better.

  376. msb on May 24th, 2007 3:48 pm

White takes the loss, for good reason. Or Hargrove for watching while his pitcher gives up six hits and seven runs in 2/3s of an inning.

he still has 13 games with no days off to nurse his bullpen through, and the last two times out, Felix has not gone deep into the game.

  377. italymariner on May 24th, 2007 3:49 pm

is it just me or does that homer reveal that ichiro is absolutely the last problem this team has?
How much more leadership is necessary than a 9th inning home run?
I despair for the future with Hargrove less expendable than Ichiro

Here is the game summary from seattlemariners.com:

Felipe Lopez went 4-for-4 and Ichiro Suzuki homered in the ninth as the Mariners rallied late.

  381. msb on May 24th, 2007 4:00 pm

per Drayer, Garcia is killing himself about getting Lopez thrown out on the triple, he has no explanation for what happened and is v. unhappy with himself (as are we all).

Ramirez said this isn’t like his previous shoulder trouble; he mentioned the tightness after the 2nd, and Chaves shut him down immediately. Hargrove put his concern at an 8 on the ever popular 1-10 scale. HoRam will see a doctor tomorrow in KC, and Drayer says that if demeanor and level of worry is anything to go by, HoRam is missing his next start.

  382. giuseppe on May 24th, 2007 4:12 pm

What does dropping Ramirez do to Felix Day?!?

I really want to see him in Anaheim this week and now I might miss it.

Oh, and I hope Horacio is OK. Yeah, get better.

I just want to see Felix!

  383. joser on May 24th, 2007 4:18 pm

Well, one way to manage the bullpen is to keep stashing guys on the DL for some rest and flying in more guys from Tacoma. Sure, it’s a bit hinky but MLB isn’t going to challenge it: even if they normally policed such a thing (and as Derek says, they don’t) the Mariners could just point out that thanks to forces outside their control they’re being asked to play a schedule and travel distances that no other team in baseball has to endure — and of course that in itself can cause injuries, which is a sufficient fig leaf for MLB (and in some cases, like Ho Ram, it might even be true).

  384. SexsonPower on May 24th, 2007 4:33 pm

it’s a no brainer, the M’s need a shake up, either manager, gm, hopefully both, but seriously we need atleast a new manager just to shake things up!

  385. pumpkinhead on May 24th, 2007 4:37 pm

Little bit of a rough outting for sean white… And he had been doing well since MIN roughed him up. In his defense, he was facing the TB all-stars though.

Not the best line you’d want to see. Three walks is killer in 2/3 of an inning.

    0.2 6 7 7 0 3 1

  386. Calderon on May 24th, 2007 4:49 pm

Actually, I had Edwin Jackson on my fantasy team earlier and the radar showed he hits 96-98 on his 4-seamer. It’s a straight fastball and got hit out of the park too often. His 2-seamer worked consistently at 94. It’s not all about velocity though.

“Little bit of a rough outting for Sean White”

That’s really like saying Mike Tyson has had a little bit of a rough time being a solid citizen.

    OR

The M’s’s problem starts at Lincoln. He was, after all, the one who thought hiring Bavasi was a non-horrible decision.

a lot of people thought hiring Bavasi was a non-horrible decision at the time.

Bavasi’s not the only problem in the front office, and it goes beyond the known execs. By himself, Bavasi’s problem with talent evaluation can be ameliorated by effective scouts and player development people; after all, he can’t do it all by himself, and SOMEONE is feeding him information. It’s an organization wide problem, starting with a flawed, dated philosophy, extending to inconsistent implementation and ending with terrible self-evaluation and correction.

That’s why they can pass off Ramirez’ and Weaver’ performances as bad luck…
