Game 55, Orioles at Mariners
DMZ · June 5, 2007 at 6:55 pm · Filed Under Game Threads
Burres v Baek. Two guys no one really thought would be in the starting rotation, for one reason or another, for long if they were in it at all – Burres was thought to be the second lefty in the pen if he was lucky, Baek was blocked by Weaver and other delicious signings – but here they are.

yawn
Yep
Is Broussard starting at 1B tonight? If so, is anything wrong with Sexson? It seems odd that Broussard would get the spot start against a lefty.
Yup.
This lineup scares the Keystone Light out of me.
pre-game pearls of wisdom:
voicemail caller bitches about why the Ms can’t get a better utility player than Willie B, giving Groz the chance to be astonished– look at the way he’s brought his average up this week, and at all the positions he can play, how could anyone not think Willie was one of the best utility men in the game?
Kurkjian (in answer to a caller’s question) opines the best, shiny move the Ms could pull off as a deadline deal would be to go get Texiera; he knows it prob. wouldn’t be realistic, given what Texas will be asking for him, but …
followed by the caller who vented about how shocking it is to see how the players are now running the game, forcing someone like Lou to kowtow to them, and by god, watching Edgar’s retirement just reminds him again, whatever happened to the character-type players who just played for the love of the game?
and Bill Krueger winds it all up by repeating his notion (as summarized by Paul earlier) that ‘[Felix] needed to abandon his breaking and off-speed pitches and throw more fastballs to get the batters to strike out more’. Bill then mentioned happily that he’d had ‘a nice chat’ with Felix today.
I actually like this line up if you toss Beltre back into the mix and its a Ben vs. Righty matchup. It’s getting there.
Felix should listen to us, not someone who actually pitched in the big leagues.
Really wish that strike three to Miggie had actually been called a strike. It always seems like the wheels come off after a pitcher doesn’t get the call.
8: Authority Fallacy, Sarcasm Lite Variant
I hate drinking in the early afternoonn. Now it’s 8:00 and I’m hungover and I’m not enjoying the game as much as I should be as a result. Although I suppose it coule be aurged there’s not much to enjoy
Those were both good pitches and better hits on the doubles. Couple feet either way and they are foul.
I feel a blowout in the making.
13: Or a slugfest…
What … just 33 pitches to get through the first? Looks like another 3.5 hour game ….
“A blowout in the making”? What, like 14-6 Mariners? Go M’s!
Yah, not too long ago, I would have checked out after even one inning if the other team was spotted a couple runs. Now, it’s a pretty good sign that I’m confident we’ll get more runs
The Os pitcher looks like the pimple-faced kid from The Simpsons, sans pimples.
At least I still feel hopeful at this point. There have been many many times where a 2-0 deficit in the first would have meant utter despair.
*Edit. now it’s a good sign for the M’s because I’m confident…
Uh, what Morgan said.
No I mean the Orioles romp.
Incidentally, did anyone catch Simms asking Miguel T. on the pregame show about a comment that essentially slandered latino players? It was interesting, certainly not your typical “safe” pregame show fare.
And speaking of pregame show, someone should offer Hargrove public speaking lessons, I’ve never heard someone say “uhh” and stumble through speech so badly just trying to get basic thoughts across.
I love how when Guillen yells after an AB it comes in so clearly.
I missed the pregame show, but I will say that on reading ESPN.com’s polite rewording of Sheffield’s comments, I thought that there was probably a point to be made about GMs and Evil Authority Folks thinking that they might have more control over people not from this country who can’t speak English well. Of course, it’s an entire other thing to claim that that’s behind the success of entire continent’s worth of players.
What’d Tejada say about it?
Oh dear, even the announcers are bored. Never a good sign when they start discussing the roof.
“It opens; it closes!”
It was cool to see the big green button that does it all, though.
Tejada was ultimately cool and ambivalent (good for him) but was clearly caught offguard by the directness of Simms question.
Cy Baek!! Nice inning.
25… I wonder what happened to the “roof guy” that Gas used to have on KJR once in a while.
I’m not Seattle local, so sadly have not heard the ‘roof guy’. I’m sure he has many tales to tell. Taking the stadium tour is pretty cool but I wish they’d let a lucky visitor push the green button.
I must have missed something. Why was Dave talking about D-day and the Normandy beaches?
D-Day is tomorrow.
30, shhh! You’ll tip off the Germans!
so … did corcoran pass out, send out for more beer, or just go catatonic? Definitely, if you drink early afternoon you either continue through the evening or call it a night real early.
AFLAC: name the 3 M’s shortstops who have had 16-game hit streaks
Yuni, Vizquel and??? Sojo?
Jesus, when did it get to be June 5th?? I’m still back in May.
Still, seems a bit of a stretch for baseball commentary. There’s *nothing* else they want to talk about?
or A-Rod?
Funny, tiananmen was yesterday and Dave didn’t talk about that.
Somebody should do a “secrets of safeco” video that shows the guy who actually drives the roof (in a cockpit complete with steering wheel) and the underground dungeons where children pull on the ropes to actually make it open and close.
Now they’re yakking about the “Mariners Mailbag” without naming it. (At least it’s baseball related.)
Why aren’t they chewing on this one?
“I know Safeco Field is pitcher-friendly, but is that the reason the Mariners have had run-production problems from 2004 to this season? Would the Mariners acquire Justin Morneau or Ken Griffey Jr., to shore up better run production?”
Hilariously, Street could only bring himself to hold his nose and address the ‘run-production problems’ part of the question. He let that Morneau/Griffey part just lie there, rotting slowly in the sun.
Randy Johnson just tied Roger Clemens for 2nd on the all-time strikeouts list!
See where I’m comin’ from, Jose?
Jose, can you see?
– Sheffield
So it turns out that Felix’s forearm strain comes from his penchant for giving his teammates shoulder rubs…
ichiro is fast
I love how we are getting alot of bad base calls.
Lauren, is that what Yuni told you?
So it turns out that Felix’s forearm strain comes from his penchant for giving his teammates shoulder rubs…
That was a creepy, manlove moment. I’m accustomed to only seeing such things among the Red Sox players.
And why shouldn’t we get one freakin’ break in this game??
No, it was an AWESOME manlove moment. Sheesh.
Dang. Where *is* everybody tonight? We already know that things go Very Bad if I have a thread mostly to myself.
Randy just passed Clemens for 2nd place all-time in Ks!
Lauren – I don’t count as part of “everybody”? I’m disappointed.
I guess I don’t count either. Then again, I’m not Lauren’s boyfriend.
[no]
we are but dust upon the wings of eagles … those of us here tonight that is ….
Maybe we want to score late again? If anybody’s to blame it’s that darn moose, he hasn’t gotten the team motivated yet!
We need the Ingitor to ignite this thread.
Do the Angels ever lose, lately? I mean, really, its getting old.
I gotta root for Mora. The guy’s wife had quintuplets a few years ago. That must put a strain on a man to perform.
Seriously though, the baseball world has been drooling all over Clemens and here Randy quietly passes him on the all-time strikeout list. What gives? Roger may have more wins and a slightly lower ERA, but in their prime I’d take Randy any day of the week (and even now for that matter).
The man has performed enough if you ask me…
the angels are off to the best start in franchise history…really…just when we start to turn things around…
Look at all those empty seats in the OF. Geez, I wish I was living near Seattle so I could see every game I could. Never know when you’re going to catch a Bloomie dinger ya know.
50- It wouldn’t be the M’s of the Bavasi/Hargrove era if a lefty AAAA pitcher didn’t come in and mow ‘em down.
Since this thread seems to be drifting out of PG territory; Felix’s forearm: I can think of a way a young man could strain his forearm, and it’s not from rubbing on another man’s….shoulders….
Speaking of the manlove, though, you’d think Jesus was coming back to town, not Griffey.
DMZ: I notice Baek puts his thumb under his cap after every ptich. Could it be there is a little lubricant smearned under there?
A hit! A ….error…hit! I’ll take it!
That was a seriously bad throw.
Nice at bat, Vidro
I challenge anyone to hate Vidro more than I do. What an F-ing waste of at bats is that guy!
Yay, Vidro!
Tremendously productive at bat by Turbo.
Don’t tell me that was on the first pitch
I wouldn’t be surprised if the scorekeeper called it a double.
60. Burres looks like a guy who could strian his arm that way.
60… Jesus isn’t coming back to Safeco until the Yankees have a series here.
60: Griffey is the messiah! implying anything else would be blasphemous
Man, does this kid look exactly like Moyer or what? From the back, especially in the windup . . .
Broussard promptly swings at ball four
On cue with the rest of the impatient line up
Never mind.
A WALK by golly…what’s that?
lets make it 17, YUNI
72: and the high socks…
Is it legal to go 2-0 on Yuni?
Geez, I hate that MLB.TV has a time delay. I have to be careful when I refresh this page or I’ll ruin the surprise of what’s about to happen. Either that or you’re all psychic.
Wow
2-0 and swing at garbage…sigh
why would you swing 2-0…FUCKING STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!
and you know that the angels will probably lose along with the Ms tonight…
80
Seriouly, it honestly seems like Yubet has no friggin’ idea what the count is.
And not only swinging 2-0, but on a guy who just walked the previous batter. Geez
76 – Everything. The way he cups the ball and extends his arm from glove to release is exactly the same. The leg kick from the windup, the follow through with the glove; exactly the same.
Seriously that is…
walk willie, sacks full for ichiro!
81
I seriously doubt that Baker will outpitch Kelvim
(Nice anti-climatic inning by the sleepwalking M’s)
er, no.
worst game ever…
Welcome back WFB.
At least Burres and Cy Baek’s pitch counts are the same now. M’s been making him work more.
This kid is pissin me off. Now I understand why all my friends that were A’s fans hated Moyer. How in God’s name is he one hitting (technically no hitting) us?
Home run Dbacks. Appears that Randy may get win 284 tonight as well.
The Orioles are just looking at his first pitch, which is often a 76 mile and hour curve. It looks like they are waiting on the fastball or the slider.
This looks like a quick inning so far.
so much for the quick inning…warm-up davis or green…
I take back comment 94. I guess they decided to swing at the first pitch curve.
this sucks for baek…he should have gotten the call on tejada in the first to get out with no runs, and then the dinks and foul-line shots have killed him…he hasn’t pitched that bad really…
My wife says I need to put something in about her that is nice. She is a very compassionate person who even brings me beer during games. Right now, she is indulging her compassion by reading about a homeless man who was killed by a brush-clearing tractor.
ichiro taking charge again…lol…
Ichiro just made my day, that was great!
wow … that had to be the most blatant display of ballhogism I have ever seen. Ichiro … you make it tough to love you at times.
65 – yeah, that RBI single that tied the game last night really a wasted at-bat. But it’s good to know you follow the USSM.com party line in your vitriol for Vidro.
Ichiro even makes ball-hoggery look cool.
homeless guys shouldn’t sleep in brush that is about to be cleared…but your wife rocks for bringing you beer…
lol That play by Ichiro reminds me of a co-ed softball league where the guys always try to steal the catches away from the female players.
that chick in the Taco Bell commercial is hot
I hope we can get some gosh darn runs
Even Sims was tsk-tsking Ichiro for stealing a ball that was, quite obviously, in STRAIGHTAWAY LEFT FIELD.
M’s better start working the pitch count so that we get a chance to pound their bullpen again
BKM, vidro is terrible…and a very expensive terrible…
Ichiro leading off…lets FINALLY get some runs, geez
Ichiro has the only *hit* today, so I guess he has the right to any fly ball he can get to.
Lets see…
THREE walks, a HBP and NO k’s? Yet we’ve managed exactly NO runs and a bad call infield single.
Gotta be kiddin’ me
103. good point 110. weaver is terrible, not vidro
106. maybe ichiro wants the cf putouts record
Burres will be pissed when he sees the replay if he continues to blank us.
as i said before…worst. game. ever.
106-That’s funny because we have two guys in right center and left center instructed by our team captain to “take it away from the women at all costs” Good call on that one.
Burres kinda looks like Moyer in his motion, don’t you think? Same socks, too. He’s a bit quicker in finishing his delivery, but other than that you might think you’re watching Jamie from the CF camera.
Someone needs to watch some tape on Burres next time they face him.
118 – beat you to it.
114- weaver is god-awful and shouldn’t be in baseball…vidro is terrible…
a hit!
Honestly, Burres’ pitch count is pretty high right now for a guy who has only allowed 1 hit (now 2) and 0 Ks.
With Guillen up you win either way. A hit or a miss and he yells fuck as loud as possible.
116: you are contending for worst post ever (this game). All we need to do is keep it close, run up Burres’ pitch total, get to the bullpen with
Uh oh, now getting a hit would actually matter. Can the M’s do it?
2-out rallies are little league . . .
Do you think Kenji can take us to Funky Town?
121. admittedly, the ops sucks for vidro, but you can’t be terrible and hit .295 in this league.
If Kenji could just somehow get on, then Bakomariner’s buddy would be up!
125, contiuned (I guess a “less than symbol messes upm things) … less than a 4 run deficit and the game is ours.
129 – Vidro actually makes it possible. 9 XBH’s, 10 GIDP’s, .710 OPS, $8 million per year, no speed, no glove. See? He’s figured it out.
Niiiiiiiice
Go JOH!
I am guessing Vidro gets a dink RBI.
I’ll settle for another seeing eye single from Vidro.
Vidro is not terrible, he is just not meeting the relatively high expectations we have of a GM who had a big blank check and whos ass is clearly on the line.
That was positively pussy like
The Orioles are so desperate for bullpen help they have Joan Baez warming up.
I’ve never seen any batter hit so many ground balls.
as i said before…vidro is terrible…HOW THE FUCK CAN YOUR JOB BE TO HIT THE BALL AND YOU KILL THE RALLY!!!!! FUCK VIDRO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyone notice that on ESPN.com’s latest Power Rankings (June 1st) the M’s are #11? They were #18 the week before.
Just turned on Gameday. Burres was at 48 strikes, 43 balls, 0 runs. The Seattle Mariners: They’re HAAAAACK-Tastic!
Wow. Note to self: do not sign up for co-ed softball
That Espn Power Ranking will drop to 25 this week…All due to the fact that Weaver is now back in the rotation.
Where was Ichiro?
Way to lay out, Jose.
Ichiro would have had that.
ichiro should have had that…
139
Will their pen take ol’ Dixie down?
150 The answer, my friend, is blowin in the wind.
Is anyone hopefully optimistic that Weaver could have a good outing? I am, but I also believe in leprechauns and unicorns.
151
I simply can’t top that answer, lol
If Baltimore can’t score off Baek with the lead off double, then they should just be real men and surrender now.
152
There’s about as much chance of that as MeatChicken upsetting Oregon State in the super regionals this weekend
I know Jamie Burke agrees with me!
I can imagine Weaver stepping incautiously from a curb and badly twisting an ankle. That’s about the extent of my optimism.
#144 – The secret is to flirt with the male outfielders and they’ll let you catch a few.
Baek gives up 3 in 5 and two thirds. I can live with that. Especially since he was the victim of a couple of bad calls. And especially since it is so much better than our other pitchers have been doing so often.
Now O’Flaherty is on to walk the left handed batter.
[Will-Blo flirting with male managers]
157
What? Just because its 3-0 to a guy who swings at everything?
154-Hey my boys in blue Michigan took down the #1 overall seed Vandy with a homer off of Price by a kid who’s last 8 ABs had been strikeouts so anything can happen.
We need our own version of The Heckler to just heckle Weaver mercilessly until he leaves or “gets injured” again.
Pre-emptive brackets…
E6. What is up with Yuni this year?
jesus. fucking. christ. how is it that the kid makes circus plays, but can’t throw across the diamond…
160
They really did an amazing job vs Vandy. Granted, I was surprised APU played the Commodores so tough as well.
Nice effin’ throw and nice effin’ pick…NOT
Pathetic…truly pathetic
Yuni====Yunoooooo
Well, the M’s may actually wanna think about an extra base hit some time today…or two…or
Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but was that actually Raul making that catch? Not Ichiro?
Darn, Randy won’t get the win now.
So my dad and I are arguing about whether Richie would have caught that bad throw…any thoughts?
With the sloppy play the last 2 days, we all just discovered that the Mariners effective limit on consecutive games played was reached sometime yesterday…
Sexson would have had that…
Shot of the giggling blonde girls…must be late innings, and M’s down….
Sadly I missed Sexson on that play. He almost certainly would have dug that out.
168: Ichiro was WAY late getting over there obviously.
Geez, this dude has thrown like 300 pitches already. Where’s the bullpen?
God, it’s only the 6th? It feels like the 12th inning at least.
Plenty of time for the M’s to almost win this thing and then break my heart.
I do appreciate players who come back with a hit after f-ing up.
Hitting streak!
So what the hell is up with Yuni? Can someone explain it?
maybe that bako clown can be the heckler, just aim his venom towards weaver
Trivia: Why is Kevin Millar not allowed on commemerotive merchandise for the ‘04 BoSox World Series Championship team?
#178 Well, Yuni is only on pace for 38 errors this year. I wouldn’t worry until he gets up to 50.
Kevin Millar isn’t a member of the Player’s Association? That’d be my guess. He was a scab back in ‘95 right?
Because he crossed the picket line in 1995 to be a replacement player and is thus barred from the players union and the MLBPA licensing contract.
Hate WFB all you want (and I do). But this (now that) pitch wasting AB was a thing of beauty. So huzzahs where they are deserved!
WilBlo HAMMERS that ball for a clean single.
You don’t worry when your no-hit all-defense short stop is making close to 40 errors a season???
Here we go … M’s are going to win … the O’s bullpen is now in effect.
182/183 correct. Also, his named has been changed in the video game “MLB 07: The Show” to Ivan Jimenez
#186 Was just kidding. Yes, anything over his # from last year (20) is definitely cause for concern. I think it may be an issue with having time to think about the throw, which is why he’s able to make the remarkable plays so easily (less time to think, just react).
186-Well so far his offense has been pretty good this year. He will right the ship on defense eventually. A lot of ball players hit bad patches.
Jose has been money this year. Well…if he doesn’t swing at crapola that is.
Never mind…first pitch hunting, AGAIN
theraven: Wow. I’ll get right on that “flirt with men to get what I want” tip. Thanks.
i’m a clown cause i hate vidro and weaver, yet your name is JR Ewing? classic…
What other players are not part of the collective marketing agreement with the MLBPA?
191: That was a hanger hit on the nose.
Lauren, you can just take the easy route and flash them. Saves hours of you dropping hints and men not understanding…
barry bonds is always some big white dude in the games…
Wow. I’ll get right on that “flirt with men to get what I want” tip. Thanks.
Here’s a tip on that, Lauren: Write a book with that title, do some promotional videos you can show during PBS pledge drives, hit the talk show circuit, and profit.
And then you can hire some outfielders to flirt with theraven.
yep. Barry negotiates royalties separately if you want him in a game.
195
Yeah, but I just hate that first pitch out thing, justified or not.
200: Not everyone can be Edgar
#194 Shoot, I used to know a few of their names… (checking Google) -
#194 Some notable names: Benny Agbayani, Brian Daubach, Brendan Donnelly, Charles Gipson (Mariner), Cory Lidle, Damian Miller, Frank Menechino, Shane Spencer, Rick Reed (previous strike). You can see the complete list at:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/legendary/replacement_players.shtml
Hopefully Yuni and Lopez will learn to be more patient. Too bad the only patient hitter on that team is Vidro. Although Ritchie has been in his career too. Not many role models for the young guys.
what about raul chavez
nice typo rafael chavez as a replacement player
In his last 55 appearances, covering 76 innings, for WHATEVER reason, Davis has allowed exactly ONE home run.
Sorry, I was incorrect about Rick Reed, he was a replacement player in 1995.
That’s right–when Cory Lidle was killed, there was sort of a shuffling of feet as folks tried to say something nice, since there hadn’t been a lot of love thrown his way for a number of years.
Never been a better time for a 7th inning stretch as half the crowd has been pullin’ a Grover by napping for the last few innings.
Where’s that elusive extra base hit? That sterling .100 ba w/ RISP sorta blows too.
Wasn’t Baez the closer for Cleveland a few years ago when we got like 5 runs off of him in the 9th at the Safe?
Grover to bunt with Jo on the plate.
2 on no one out–sounds like a good start.
Even after a 4 pitch walk, Kenji will be hackin’ away at the first pitch that doesn’t almost hit him in the noggin.
Mazzone sorta looks like that hand grenade throwing coach of the AA Mississippi team that went nuts the other day
This is playing out just as I predicted. Get to their bullpen by the 7th and our win is basically assured. You just watch.
Kenji just took a dump in his pants
TAKE TWO HERE if ya have to.
If we don’t tie the game now, I am going to bed.
#198 There’ll be multiple outfielders flirting with me? That sounds promising!
Yay Oreo’s bullpen!
“Mazzone sorta looks like that hand grenade throwing coach of the AA Mississippi team that went nuts the other day.”
Probably feels like it, right about now.
Enrico Perlozzo! Enrico Perlozzo!
Again, I will settle for a seeing eye single Vidro. Alternately, if they throw it inside, let it hit you.
Sacks jammed and NO ONE out.
I will join BakoMariner on the hate-meter scale if he effs this inning up!
if vidro doesn’t drive in at least two…
hey bako clown . . . vidro gets gets a hit, you shut up for the rest of the night. no hit = i shut up . . . deal
But if Vidro gets a single will BakoMariner join the “ehh, at least we don’t have Russ Davis still” side?
If he hits into a triple play…then all three of us crap in our pants
Seems like prime DP territory for Turbo.
Where have ya been Pumpkinhead?
#226 Would a sac fly equal a draw?
Everybody chill on Vidor. Goosfraba. He will come through. *nervously crosses fingers*
DP coming…and russ davis could play defense and wasn’t crazy expensive…
I mean Vidro
Argh. That’s out on a warm day.
That’ll do, pig. That’ll do.
Dare I say…a productive out by chance?
GOTTA get AT LEAST one more, by even a simple fly out. Lets be smart…please
He hits one that leaves the infield! Holy crap.
Sorry, I was out of town until just now =)
That was a productive AB. He hit it well and the other way.
should have taken the deal bako.
Russ Davis could play defense? The same Russ Davis who set the major league record for errors?
Or do I remember that wrong?
Broussard vs a lefty?
Not good imho. Just get a fly!!
LOL
Baltimore is truly flawed late in the game
#241 I was thinking the same thing!
Ha-ha!
Wild pitch! I’ll take it. We’ve got a game.
Yeah. Perfectly acceptable at bat by Vidro, especially with Ibanez also being able to advance and getting home on the WP
i am an optimist as much as anyone……but with no outs, bases loaded, and a DH that is making 6+ million at the plate, we should get more than a sac fly…
A comedy of errors.
Nice hustle on a very hard hit ball.
Still just need a stinkin’ fly ball to tie the game!!! A fairly decent one at that w/ our catcher running.
248, it’s better than the unassisted triple play I was about to predict.
Wow, you know you’re excited watching a game when you give the “safe” sign while watching it on TV.
i never said davis played well…lol…at least he could take the field unlike vidro…
Ah… a little life.
Honestly if I was an Orioles starting pitcher I would slap my bullpen – the entire bullpen.
Low and inside is NOT the pitch ya want Yuni
Seriously though Ritchie should’ve pinch hit.
Whatever we’re paying the firs base ump, let’s double it.
Are we having fun yet? WooHoo, I told you so!
Ooops…yeah it is
Life is good.
Whatever we’re paying the first base ump, let’s double it.
Yuuuuuuuuuuni! I’m lovin the 7th innings as of late.
258: He missed the bag.
A great reward for all 20 fans still at Safeco.
Good thing its so late in Maryland that most of the bridge jumpers have long since gone to sleep
Oh and 19K my ass.
All-hit, no-field shortstop!
doesn’t baltimore have the third best starting staff in the AL? their pen is ridiculous…
They really need to change pitchers for Willie?
Although, the way things are going for the bullpen….
Sorry, Baltimore. We’d rather be rediculously lucky than good.
This couldn’t be happening to a nicer team but I’ll take it.
I think the M’s motto is “Chicks dig the singles.”
263- Oh, guess I wasn’t looking at the foot. Sweet all the same =)
Appologies for the double comment as well.
Wills wants to be the hero so bad, I can taste it from 900 miles away.
266
They’re counting imaginary friends as well apparently
Maybe Safeco is like New Zealand, only instead of more sheep than men, there are more garlic fries.
Ichie is so good and Baltimore is so bad, was there really any doubt of that outcome?
ONE game out of the WC
Ichiro!!!
I’m not accidentally watching last nights game am I?
Is it really only the SEVENTH?
Back in the day, the Mariners bullpen was known informally as “The Arson Squad”; Now Baltimore’s bullpen is “puting out fires–with gasoline”
And that, my friends, is why Ichiro should be re-signed, post-haste.
And the M’s reach double digits in hits *again*.
good call idaho…the angels are playing so well right now, that the WC might be the only option…
If we somehow blow this now, I’ll be pissed.
Lopez ends two innings in a row…but that’s ok I guess.
I’m more irritated with the ensuing Banner Bank commercial
280… as Yoda would say: forever game, yes…
ichiro should be resigned at any cost…
Burres pitched well… or at least helped the M’s look clueless at the plate. Tough no-decision for him.
But yay our team!
J. Lo needs to go back and read his own quote about taking more pitches, I guess.
Did you know that the Ms have recorded 10 hits in 31 of their 55 games this year?
I think this requires an insurance beer.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a “What the? You’re denying my claim because of that tiny clause I couldn’t read, and wouldn’t understand even if I had read it” beer.
So keep it on cruise control M’s.
287
LOL
He could also say, “Pitch Weaver again…you musn’t”
let me guess…morrow will throw, um, fastballs?
Let’s see if Morrow can shake off his last outing which was terrible and perform.
WILL THE ANGELS EVER LOSE A FRIGGIN GAME?????
Sorry Millar, no chalkline doubles vs Morrow. SLIGHTLY different fastball than Baek’s
No Bakomariner, Morrow will throw HEAT.
how tired is the bullpen going to be heading to SD? at least they finally get a day and a half off after tonight…
On the bright side, we could be 1 game back of the wildcard after tonight!
293… bad signing, he was. Waste of 8 million dollars, hmmmmmmmm?
Mike Sciosca will eventually run his team right out of first place. He does it every year. He consistently fields better talent than the West brethren and yet he has what 2 division titles and one freakish world series victory to show for it.
wow…strike out w/o the fastball…i’m developing a man crush on the kid…
EVERYONE wants Raul to avoid the ball apparently
Good time to use the slider. So tasty.
DAMNIT, someone call for the ball.
that’s twice they have taken it away from Raul…he’s probably not too happy…
Geez, will nobody let Raul catch a friggin fly ball?
nobody, and I mean NOBODY, wants RAUL catching flyballs!
This really is like coed softball. Neither Betancourt nor Ichiro wants to risk letting Ibanez catch a flyball.
Ah, the Yoda translator:
“Burres v baek. Two guys no one really thought, in the starting rotation, would be, for one reason or another, for in it at all, long if they were – Burres was thought to be the second lefty in the pen if, lucky, was he, blocked by Weaver and other delicious signings, Baek was – but here they are. Yeesssssss.”
Even chokeland is winning. Damn the other west teams.
I play with a few females on my co-ed city league team that probably do catch the ball better than Raul.
Not saying much, I know
can you see ibanez pulling a zambrano on yuni or ichiro in the dugout?
Clearly, Morrow needs to learn another pitch.
They’ll just tell him to go spout off to someone with LESS hr’s than him
The Angels, as of the end of the last out in Oakland, now have the most wins in MLB. Yuck.
There’s your other pitch =)
#313
Can you see Ibanez hanging from the nearest yardarm if he touches Ichiro?
Based on Dave, it seems that Morrow is starting to show something besides his fastball… anyone watching the game care to comment?
Is it wrong that I like the AFLAC goat more than the duck?
318
The biggest crime in that, would be such an incident would wake Grover up from his nap
Eventually they’re just going to put Ibanez in foul territory so we’ll have a better chance at getting foul line drives and Yuni and Ichiro will take all the ones in fair territory.
I just don’t think morrow has much confidence in his slider. Maybe this game will help.
Dammit, Lauren, why’d you have to ruin a nice evening. Women.
Maybe the duck and goat are related through their bank?
got a strikeout with a slider, according to blowers
320… naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
#320 – What Aflac goat? Darn, I feel like I’m missing out.
i love the goat…laugh my ass off everytime…
It was like Guillen thought Todd was still finishing his warm up tosses
Hasn’t Todd Williams gone back & forth from the minors for about forever?
328- You’re definately not.
OK, really not digging the whole us-and-them feeling here tonight. And I don’t mean Mariners-Orioles.
Yeah yeah, jokes, etc.
Ball hit to LF and… ICHIRO steals it from Payton!
320
Being a hardcore Oregon State Beaver fan, I think you should like EVERYTHING more than a “duck”
Most Huskies would agree
325 – lolz!
Yes the Angels have gone on a pretty good tear, but the M’s have kind of been sucked along in their wake, so thats kind of nice. Especially if we hold here.
Lauren
I just meant reminding us of the damned Angels. Sorry
Lauren
Have you played softball before? Not ribbin’ ya, honestly wondering.
Beavs won their elimination game too. Hope to watch me some Beavs in person this weekend.
Lets go Putty!
Geez, when did the Angels get 16 games over .500?
338
You really might be able to get tickets? I heard the switchboard at the ol’ ticket office is crazy busy.
If I didn’t live in Nampa, I’d totally be trying to get some. (Tickets that is)
#332:
No offense, please, Lauren, since I’ve never interacted with you before, but if you visited a WNBA blog I’d guess you’d never face that issue. Guys don’t know how to react if females aren’t commenting solely on the cute cheeks (not facial) and bulging biceps of their baseball heroes.
338-i hope to watch beav every weekend…(sorry, had to say it…)
DiNardo? Who the hell is that. Can’t be that bad if he shuts out Manny, Ortiz, and the rest of the dirty sox.
The chance of 85 wins clinching the division is getting slimmer and slimmer by the week.
Putz will NOT walk the lead off guy
Must think positive. What goes up must come down. Let the Angels get 10 games up on us, then falter out of the gate after the All Star break and stumble to the finish.
Of course, that would also mean that the A’s would do their usual late season surge and pass us in a cough-enducing dust cloud.
but 85 wins will probably get us the wild card…C’MON JJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Brian Roberts looks like either the coolest, funniest guy to hang out with or a complete douche bag. Anybody know?
#346:
That action is dependent upon them dumping Kendall for an actual MLB-caliber (or even AAA-caliber) leadoff guy.
Beavers tickets don’t go on sale until Thursday, 7am online or 8:30 at the box office.
In Spanish, DiNardo translates to – and I am not making this up – “I gave Nard.” Take that, Joe Table!
349
You mean its bad to have a guy with a .204 average?
SLUGGING average that is.
Both Cleveland and Detroit look like they are for real. Hard to see 85 wins getting the wild card. Oh, yeah, and there’s some team in NY that might get hot at some point.
igniting the D
NICE
Bloomy is looking scandalously decent spelling Beltre, no?
Willie ballgame!!!!!!!
Wow, way to anticipate that bunt BoomBoom.
Willi just earned himself another season of ‘grit’.
350
Have you ever visited this site?
http://www.pure-orange.net/
353: the yanks are done, i really doubt they get back to .500 this year. No pitching whatsoever.
“but 85 wins will probably get us the wild card…”
Replace ‘85′ with ‘90+’…and I’d agree.
Willie “Boom-Boom” Bloomquist strikes again! Nice D Willie.
My, my, Sam’s refusing to let the Orioles go quietly into the night.
But they do anyway…
SlipElm: USSM is generally an exception to that view of sports blogs/boards/etc, I’d say.
No softball for me. I was a swimmer.
JJ inspires much confidence in me. Annnnd YES!
Woah! What a win!
#361
And their defense stinks, too. I hope you are right. But Satan’s favorite team has resources . .
Praise the Lord and pass the garlic fries!
Love the come from behind wins, but I am curious, as I can’t remember…when was the last time we had a walk off homer to win the game?
M’s win! 5 games over .500! 1 game back of the wild card! O’s bullpen tomorrow!
Hmm, so a bunt when the defense expects it may lead to bad consequences. Instead of just throwing away one of yoru three outs to get the runner to second you may throw away one of your three outs and not get the runner there.
Fascinating. With a little more study we may find proof that “productive” outs sometimes aren’t.
Its weird to think of how well we played but still are 5 1/2 back
360- Never been to that site until just now.
7 is apparently the M’s lucky number lately! It sucks we have to wait that long for offense, but at least it’s some offense!
So what time is the press conference scheduled for tomorrow? You know, the one that announces contract extensions for Bavasi and Hargrove?
The Yanks would have to play 25 games over .500 while the Sox play no better than .500 the rest of the way for the Yanks to win the East. The wild card won’t be much easier from their current location in the W/L column.
#366, Lauren:
I agree. Generally sex/gender don’t enter the conversation here, as they are issues that can’t really be measured statistcally and susequently rationally opined upon.
Nice comeback win by the M’s. Positively Anaheim-esque, given they both did it versus B’more.
Putz has done his job…and then some. Great to see him come out there night after night protecting a lead. With him on the mound the score doesn’t change much.
And for the second night in a row I get off work just in time to see the M’s come back to win the game. Now THIS is something I can get used to!
on the postgame Yuni says (via Carlos Garcia) that right now they feel that they can beat anyone, and he is seeing the ball very very well and not trying to do to much but put the ball in play and if he doesn’t get it done the next guy will and that he appreciates all the love and support Lauren gives him.
so, does Davis vulture that win?
370: Adrian Beltre, August 22, 2006, against the Yankees
#378, hub:
Putz is the man. He should be an All-Star; it’s almost impossible to perform much better than he’s done this season.
This is a pretty exciting team to watch. I love the constant hits…Not a classic saber metric way of building a lineup but we are without holes. Its a very fun team to watch…lots of hits….Hey can I get a “nice play” out of Bloomie?
Not a classic saber metric way of building a lineup but we are without holes.
Other than most of starting pitching, Ibanaz, Sexson, SS defense…
Yeah, Rizzs, et. al, conveniently neglect to mention those obvious portals when they spout their “no easy out” lineup rhetoric.
Time for the Angels to regress to a reasonable level. No way they can even come close to this winning % in Sept.
Though to his credit, Ibanez has not done consistently poorly this season; he just hasn’t been able to elevate the ball for HR power.
Didn’t expect the Angels to be this good – but I didn’t expect us to be this good either.
Only 3 back in the loss column.
I doubt anyone thought we’d be 5 games over if we had virtually no productivity out of sexson, a horrible horrible weaver, or mediocre ibanez.
381-
Thanks.
#389: Don’t forget about being only 1 game out in the Wild Card and 5.5 out in the West.
Reliving an old post:
http://ussmariner.com/2006/06/22/this-is-fun/
#392: What are you implying? That history can repeat itself?
It already is. The question is whether or not we continue to follow that season’s course of events. I, for one, do not believe history will continue to repeat itself later.
Actually I just wanted to post that because now, like then, is fun.
I wonder how deep a hole Weaver has to dig himself before Grover will take him out.
#343 pumpkinhead Says: DiNardo? Who the hell is that. Can’t be that bad if he shuts out Manny, Ortiz, and the rest of the dirty sox.
Lenny DiNardo was a “crafty lefty” Red Sox pitcher until they put him on waivers in February, and he was picked up by the As. Ironic, huh?
Jeff Weaver: I hope his refusal to pitch rehab in the minors blows up in his face, in a “you BETTER succeed or your ass is grass” kind of way. Larry Stone’s commentary in the Times today pretty much sums it up.
BTW, all you pessimists, it was nice to see the commentary tide turn about halfway through this game thread…
It was quite frustrating to sit through the first half of that game. We’re not exactly known as a come-from-behind team…
It’s a nice surprise to have the previous two 7th innings be a hitfest.
At this point, every game counts to keep us in contention… I’m afraid the Weaver start saturday is going start the downward spiral
The M’s are a come-from-behind team when they’re facing a team with a decent starter and a sucky bullpen. Several posters predicted this. See 109, 125, 187
fishiam (#215) gets extra credit for:
Unfortunately, I had a movie to get to at 9:30 (damn SIFF!
) so I missed this. Ah well, I saw last night, and there will probably be another one today.
I’m feeling pretty good about the M’s right now. The ‘pen has been great, and I’m seeing the Sherril/Morrow/Putz as a reincarnation of Rhodes/Nelson/Sasaki of a few years back. Just a solid group that shuts down innings 7-9 for this team. The concern is obviously the starters, as the ‘pen is going to get burnt out if they can’t get more that 5+ innings from the starters.
Maybe the Ms should play all their games without any days off in between. That seems to be working quite well for them.
