USSM/Lookout Landing Event(s)

Dave · June 26, 2007 at 7:21 am · Filed Under Mariners

The July 31st trade deadline occurs on a Tuesday this year, and is always one of the busiest days of the year, traffic wise, for the blog. Everyone has an opinion on what happened, what should have happened, and what might have happened in a dream world. So, what if you had the opportunity to get together with a large group of Mariner fans a couple of days after the trade deadline, talk about the recent events, and watch some Mariner prospects at the same time?

Well, you just might. Jeff Sullivan and I are looking into the feasibility of flying into Seattle during the first few days in August and hosting a pair of USSM/LL events – one up in Everett for the northsiders, and one down in Tacoma for the southside folks. We’re looking at August 2nd/3rd as the potential dates, which is a Thursday night in Tacoma and a Friday night up in Everett.

Cost for each would be likely somewhere in the $20-$25 range and would include your ticket to the game. If you’ve been to a USSM get together before, you know we’ll do our best to make it worth your time and money.

Since planning this involves some airfare purchases for Jeff and myself, I’m putting this thread up to gauge interest and make sure it’s something you guys would want to attend. We also want to get a good feel for how many people would want to attend the Everett vs Tacoma events. So, in the comments, here’s what I’m asking for:

Number of people – bringing friends/family?
Level of interest – definitely in, probably in, or maybe in.
Which site – Everett or Tacoma (or both is fine too).

I have an idea of what I think the response will be like, but before I throw down a good chunk of cash and buy a plane ticket back to Seattle, I’d like to make sure this is something you guys are in for. The events are always a good time, and we’ll get to prove that Jeff and I are indeed two seperate people.

I’d be up for an event in Tacoma, and 8/2 is a good date. Much easier for those of us who live down in this neck of the woods. Just me (One.)

  2. Oly Rainiers Fan on June 26th, 2007 7:39 am

I go to every Tacoma home game anyway. You do realize it’d be $1 beer night right? (and $1 tiny hot dog/soda/coffee/ice cream sandwich night) Or, maybe you’re planning on using the new ‘party decks’ and including some food in it?

  3. Dave on June 26th, 2007 7:45 am

We have a couple different options that we’re kicking around for the Tacoma game, but most likely, the cost of the event will include some food and be a little bit more expensive than the Everett event.

  4. zzyzx on June 26th, 2007 7:46 am

That unfortunately is the weekend of my friend’s big annual party. Catch ya next time.

  5. f2aler on June 26th, 2007 7:50 am

I suggest my hometown of Burien as the site for the south location. Of course, I live in Southern California these days…..

  6. PositivePaul on June 26th, 2007 8:09 am

I may be in as well. Tacoma’s it for me. I may bring the family, unless I can get away on my own.

You know, maybe instead of a “Buy me a beer” link, since you don’t drink beer, how about a “Contribute to my airplane ticket” one instead…

  7. Oly Rainiers Fan on June 26th, 2007 8:12 am

I figured (since it doesn’t generally cost $25 to attend a game in Tacoma normally) that the ‘contribute to airplane ticket’ was included in the cost.

Which is why I would say… I wouldn’t need the game ticket, but would happily contribute to said airplane ticket cost anyway, and think yes, y’all should come to Tacoma.

  8. Dave on June 26th, 2007 8:17 am

Oly has it right – by attending the feed, you are contributing to the plane tickets for Jeff and myself.

  9. msb on June 26th, 2007 8:21 am

torn, torn .. north? south? I’m in the middle of both places.
It’s been a long time for the Rainiers, mostly because I hate the Cheney parking lot after a game, but Everett is a lot of fun as well. well, there is likely at least 1 ticket to 1 of the sites.

    or maybe 1 to both.

  10. dw on June 26th, 2007 8:24 am

There’s some family stuff that might play into all of this, but I can say that Everett is a lot more convenient for us than Tacoma. And it’s 2 adults, 1 precocious three year old.

  11. msb on June 26th, 2007 8:27 am

Everett will play the Tri-Cities Dust Devils, and Tacoma plays the Memphis Redbirds (just missing Nashville & their new Mr. Perfect, Manny Parra)

  12. daveblev on June 26th, 2007 8:37 am

    Bring it to southside Virginia!

  13. arbeck on June 26th, 2007 8:50 am

I’d definitely be up for one. Since I live smack dab in the middle of Seattle and am about equidistant from either, I might just attend both.

  14. bakomariner on June 26th, 2007 8:53 am

i’d be totally down to go, but since i live in bakersfield, the best i can offer is to host a party in July when the High Desert boys visit the Bakersfield Blaze…come on down…lol…

  15. Duffer on June 26th, 2007 9:04 am

    Definitely in.

    Everett.

    One ticket, please. :-)

  16. bakomariner on June 26th, 2007 9:08 am

  17. eponymous coward on June 26th, 2007 10:03 am

I’d go for the Friday one in Everett.

  18. Sportszilla on June 26th, 2007 10:07 am

I’d probably be down for both nights. Put me at about a 7 on the 1-10 scale as far as confirmed…

Oh, and if some carpooling could be arranged that would make things even better.

  19. SequimRealEstate on June 26th, 2007 10:10 am

Tacoma, want to go, would be 2.
    Greg

  20. DC_Mariner on June 26th, 2007 10:21 am

Not sure whether I would go to Tacoma or Everett cause I’m in the middle, but I will go to one of them, and it will be me and a friend.

  21. David J. Corcoran I on June 26th, 2007 10:25 am

I’d do an event in either place, and I’ll drive up for it. Tacoma would be preferred, I guess, as I could find a place to stay easier.

  22. David J. Corcoran I on June 26th, 2007 10:25 am

And now that I think about it, it might be my whole family as we were evaluating going up to see the BoSox series.

  23. CecilFielderRules on June 26th, 2007 10:33 am

    Tacoma, probable, 2.

And hopefully at this point we’ll be either watching Adam Jones in Tacoma or discussing his impressive start with the M’s – not wondering why he was traded for a mediocre starter two days earlier.

  24. ConorGlassey on June 26th, 2007 10:41 am

    I’m down for both!

  25. Dave on June 26th, 2007 10:47 am

That was a given, Conor. I don’t think we’re allowed to have these things unless you and your Dad are present.

  26. katal on June 26th, 2007 11:02 am

I’ll definitely make it to the Tacoma game, and I’ll likely attend the Everett event as well.

  27. SpokaneMsFan on June 26th, 2007 11:11 am

I would be interested in going to both. Would drive over from Spokane so might as well stay a couple days. Looks like no one on my team (at work) has requested those days off yet, but the sooner I know to put in a request the better.

  28. Gomez on June 26th, 2007 11:22 am

I’ll definitely pay for and make the trip to both events.

And don’t worry, Dave, I won’t start any arguments ;P Hard to believe, but I’m usually a pretty nice guy.

  29. Deanna on June 26th, 2007 11:29 am

Crossposted to LL too, but basically, if I’m still in town then, I’ll go to both games; if I’m not, oh well. I’ll know for sure whether or not I can go in about two days.

I don’t know if I could handle being a Jeff Sullivan fangirl and a Dave Cameron fangirl all at once, anyway. My brain might explode.

  30. David* on June 26th, 2007 11:30 am

I’ll probably go to the Everett one. If you guys want I can try to find my 1996 South Kitsap HS yearbook so you can laugh at young Willie Boom-Boom and Jason Ellison.

  31. Dave on June 26th, 2007 11:31 am

Perhaps one of the attractions should be Jeff and I dueling it out for Deanna’s affections?

  32. Jeff Sullivan on June 26th, 2007 11:40 am

But we’re the same person, and I’m not going to risk this face by punching myself.

  33. Dave on June 26th, 2007 11:42 am

I’m sure Gil Meche will burn you a copy of his face, and no one would notice the difference.

  34. DiamondDave on June 26th, 2007 11:44 am

Sounds like a lot of fun. As hard as it is to believe, I’ve lived in Seattle for 32 years and I’ve never been to either minor league place. Of course, when you live minutes from the Kingdome/Safeco, it makes it hard to justify the commute to see minor league ball. You could watch a minor league team right here in Seattle from 1977 to about 1993 or so ;-)

Yes, Tacoma for me (I’m probably in). Two people.

One question: Why do two people that run this blog live so far away from Seattle? Makes it kind of hard to get to Safeco, no?

  35. ErikG803 on June 26th, 2007 11:46 am

I’d be very interested in bringing me and a friend. Either Tacoma or Everett would be great.

    Awesome idea.

  36. Jeff Sullivan on June 26th, 2007 11:46 am

You know, now that Gil’s pitching like a madman I’m going to start taking that as a compliment.

  37. Dave on June 26th, 2007 11:50 am

One question: Why do two people that run this blog live so far away from Seattle? Makes it kind of hard to get to Safeco, no?

I grew up in Seattle, then moved away. Jeff attached himself to this team despite having never lived in the area because he likes to root for losing teams.

  38. Evan on June 26th, 2007 12:04 pm

That explains the Ottawa Senators obsession.

  39. Jeff Sullivan on June 26th, 2007 12:06 pm

    You guys really suck.

  40. Matthew Carruth on June 26th, 2007 12:17 pm

Not as much as the teams that you decided to root for do

    wait…

  41. Marvin on June 26th, 2007 12:23 pm

I’m in for Everett. Anybody else coming down (not up) from Vancouver?

  42. No Rhubarb on June 26th, 2007 12:56 pm

I’m down for Tacoma. Hell, I live 10 minutes away and I’m there all the time anyway.

  43. Adam S on June 26th, 2007 12:56 pm

I’d like to go to both, but won’t know until a couple of days before if I’ll be free on Thursday. I expect I’ll make one and come with a friend, so put me down for 2 strong maybes on Friday in Everett.

Dave, I knew you had moved to NC (and slightly off topic, Jeff Shaw was in Japan) but never realized Jeff Sullivan wasn’t local.

  44. Jonah Keri on June 26th, 2007 1:32 pm

Haven’t seen you in ages, Dave, and Angele and I have been hankerin’ to get back to the Pac NW, plus this sounds fun. Pretty good chance we’d try to make one of these events. Not sure which, maybe a little lean toward Everett (assuming the 65/35 chance we fly out comes to fruition).

  45. joser on June 26th, 2007 1:36 pm

Anybody else coming down (not up) from Vancouver?

This works metaphorically, (and possibly pharmaceutically), not just geographically.

  46. joser on June 26th, 2007 1:41 pm

    You guys really suck.

    And Dave’s on fire!

Jeff attached himself to this team despite having never lived in the area because he likes to root for losing teams.

But to have attached yourself to the Mariners back in the day it wasn’t enough to want to root for a losing team far away — the Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs were all available — you’d have to want to root for a losing team in complete obscurity. The only other team with so low a profile to its suckdom was probably the Brewers (prior to this season, anyway).

  47. joser on June 26th, 2007 1:44 pm

I’ll probably go to the Everett one. If you guys want I can try to find my 1996 South Kitsap HS yearbook so you can laugh at young Willie Boom-Boom and Jason Ellison.

If they both actually signed your yearbook with “BFF” and a little heart I’ll buy you beer all night.

  48. zvazda on June 26th, 2007 2:05 pm

My dad and I are interested, but we have to get a little closer to know how the family/theatre schedules will be juggled.

  49. byronebyronian on June 26th, 2007 2:10 pm

Dave just got props on John Seibel’s Sportsbash show on ESPN radio.

The caller, who I believe was either Buster Olney or Rob Neyer and they gave Dave props as well as the USSM.

  50. JH on June 26th, 2007 2:43 pm

RIGHT during the Watson Fellowship conference, about 10 days before my final return to the PNW.

    Damn.

  51. Goose on June 26th, 2007 3:09 pm

I’m down for Tacoma on the 2nd.

  52. Kingfelix34 on June 26th, 2007 3:57 pm

Dave, you said you were driving to Atlanta the other day, what city are you from or do you live in. I’m a huge Mariner fan in living in Orlando. Just curious.

  53. joser on June 26th, 2007 4:10 pm

Dave is in North Carolina. Greensboro or Winston-Salem, IIRC, but I might not.

  54. Mike G. on June 26th, 2007 4:19 pm

I have to quit banishing myself to Alaska for the summers. I never get to go to these things. Have fun everyone.

  55. marinerschas2 on June 26th, 2007 4:37 pm

I’m down for tacoma any day. maybe 2 people, probably just me though.

  56. marinerschas2 on June 26th, 2007 4:40 pm

come to think of it, Everett wouldn’t be that bad either. Count me in for Tacoma for sure, and Everett tenativly

  57. vitalogist on June 26th, 2007 5:21 pm

put me down as MAYBE for tacoma… i’d probably bring one or two others with…

  58. gag harbor on June 26th, 2007 5:48 pm

I’m interested in a Tacoma event if I’m in country. The date will matter most but I’m assuming August 2-4 (somewhere in there?). It’d be 1-2 people.

  59. Marvin on June 26th, 2007 5:54 pm

“This works metaphorically, (and possibly pharmaceutically), not just geographically.”

There are two Vancouvers in the area. I was just trying to be clear on which one. Coming down from Vancouver can be a real drag though (pharmaceutically).

  60. Marvin on June 26th, 2007 5:58 pm

“not just geographically”… Sorry, I read “just not geographically”. I’ll shut up now.

  61. royal curve on June 26th, 2007 6:27 pm

Definitely in for Tacoma. Just me. Count on it.

  62. David J. Corcoran I on June 26th, 2007 6:28 pm

So I’m definitely going to be driving from Central Idaho for this. If anyone is in Lewiston/Colfax/Vantage/Tri-Cities/Yakima/Ellensburg/wherever and needs a ride, I can certainly help you out.

  63. David J. Corcoran I on June 26th, 2007 6:29 pm

I’m fine taking SR 26 or US-12 depending

  64. beckya57 on June 26th, 2007 8:09 pm

Phooey. I’d be up for the Tacoma event, but I work Thursday nights. Arrrgh.

  65. az sr softball on June 26th, 2007 8:30 pm

Count me in for Everett (nice facility).

  66. az sr softball on June 26th, 2007 8:31 pm

DJC–Careful going thru Colfax. (speed trap)

  67. TheBird on June 26th, 2007 9:13 pm

I’m up for Everett on either day. 1 person, pretty definite unless work conspires against me.

  68. David J. Corcoran I on June 26th, 2007 11:49 pm

65: Yeah, I’ve been through Colfax many times, and I’ve seen that cop. Thanks, though.

  69. wabbles on June 27th, 2007 1:08 am

Can’t do Thursday, but Friday in Everett? Heck yeah, count me in! I’ll work Saturday if I have to! (Which, I’ll probably have to.) It would be great to once again put faces with (screen)names.

  70. wabbles on June 27th, 2007 1:15 am

Well, actually, as a former reporter for the Whitman County (formerly Colfax) Gazette, I must point out: It’s not so much a speed trap as US195 is the “Main Street” right through the middle of town. 25 mph is about right for that situation, don’t cha think?

  71. JK on June 27th, 2007 6:48 am

My son and I could probably make Everett on Friday.

  72. bergamot on June 27th, 2007 7:11 am

I’d like to attend the Everett event.

  73. David Corcoran on June 27th, 2007 8:28 am

69: Yes, but they enforce it heaavily. Not that there’s a problem with that.

  74. Jonah Keri on June 27th, 2007 8:29 am

That was me on the SportsBash giving Dave and USSM props. I should be so lucky to produce content half as good as Dave’s.

And you can officially count us in for 2 attendees at the Friday night Everett event btw. :-)

  75. James H on June 27th, 2007 9:42 am

Count me in for one in Tacoma.
