Game 78, Blue Jays at Mariners

Weaver vs Marcum, 1:05 pm.

Mike Hargrove’s fairwell party hopes to end with the Mariners celebrating their 8th straight win. Let’s hope the pixie dust Weaver used in June came with a supply for July as well.

What kind of reception does Mike get when he comes out of the dugout with the lineup card?

  2. flash_33 on July 1st, 2007 12:31 pm

Have you guys happen to take a look at our lineup for tonights game?
    Here it is:
    Ichiro
    Beltre
    Ibanez
    Guillen
    Sexson
    Broussard
    Johjima
    Betancourt
    Willie

  3. cgmonk on July 1st, 2007 12:32 pm

For those that wanted Hargrove gone, they are getting what they wanted. He is on his way out, so there’s really no reason to boo him today. I expect him to get a standing ovation from the crowd.

  4. flash_33 on July 1st, 2007 12:33 pm

BTW, the All-Star selection show is on tbs at 1 on tbs. Hopefully Ichiro starts in Center and J.J. makes the team. They are locks but is there anyone else who will make it?

  5. planB on July 1st, 2007 12:33 pm

    No Vidro?! OMG!

  6. eponymous coward on July 1st, 2007 12:34 pm

Hey, Jose Lima and Aaron Sele have had decent supplies show up every now and then. I don’t see why Weaver can’t keep going for a couple of months and do decent.

    *farewell (this message will self-destruct in 5… 4… 3…

What a weird season this is.

2: loving Beltre in the 2-hole.

  10. WardP on July 1st, 2007 12:42 pm

Good to see Raul back in the lineup..

  11. Norm Charlton Fan Club on July 1st, 2007 12:43 pm

4…I can’t imagine anyone besides those 2 on there.

Johjima’s been good, but way too many good catchers in the AL, I can’t imagine him going instead of someone like Posada Martinez or Mauer.

JJ seems to be a lock, and I assume Ichiro would make it even if he doesn’t win the voting for OF.

Do they ever put middle relievers on All-Star teams??

  12. msb on July 1st, 2007 12:45 pm

is the announcement just for the fan vote, or does it include the manager’s selections and the player votes?

  13. msb on July 1st, 2007 12:47 pm

    #11– Shiggy went.

  14. scraps on July 1st, 2007 12:47 pm

Do they ever put middle relievers on All-Star teams??

Maybe when they have to pick a player from a team not already represented, and the only remotely palatable choice is a middle reliever. Otherwise, no.

    Undercut by msb!

Talking about cutting heads off cows, of course.

  18. cgmonk on July 1st, 2007 12:52 pm

    @16

I can understand Miguel just fine. Jose Lopez the other night after the extra innings game, that was a lot more difficult.

  19. msb on July 1st, 2007 12:53 pm

when Donnelly went on a player vote, he was “one of only seven non-closers to be selected for the All-Star Game since 2000″

  20. The Unknown Comic on July 1st, 2007 12:54 pm

I can understand Miguel’s english good enough but after that God knows what he is trying to say.

lots of fine man-hugging going on in that dugout.

  33. MedicineHat on July 1st, 2007 1:21 pm

According to MLB.com, TBS unveils the the AS rosters after the Braves MArlins game which just resumed following a rain delay…so the announcement is delayed.

  34. flash_33 on July 1st, 2007 1:21 pm

    32. I agree with Morse. He should be on the club as soon as he is healthy again. Jones can wait until one of our outfielders goes on the DL. Rivera, I don’t think so. You may be sarcastic about Morse, but he is a good player, there is no doubt about that.

  35. flash_33 on July 1st, 2007 1:23 pm

    33. Are they going to announce the reserves as well? If so I am making my pitch here that Granderson should be on the team. The guy isn’t even on the ballot can u believe that?

  36. MedicineHat on July 1st, 2007 1:25 pm

35: it just says “rosters” so I assuem so….

“the American and National League rosters finally will be introduced on TBS at approximately 4 p.m. ET today during the 2007 Major League Baseball All-Star Game Selection Show presented by Chevrolet.”

I wasn’t sure if thebig708 was serious before, but now that he is suggesting Rivera as the star of the future, obviously he’s simply DMZ’s evil alter-ego. Notice how you never see the two of them on the same message board.

  51. pumpkinhead on July 1st, 2007 1:42 pm

Wonder why Bruke is out of the lineup today.

  52. jefffrane on July 1st, 2007 1:42 pm

What IS the deal with that freak visible in about the fourth row, during shots of left handed hitters? I’ve seen him in a number of games (and I hate him because he’s got such a great seat); he’s usually just visible for his exploding hair and beard, but today he’s got some kind of weird makeup on and is stuffing hankies in his nostrils.

Just tell me he’s not active on ussmariner.

Some posters dislike Blowers because his speaking voice is so… uninspiring.

But listening to him today, I have to think he’s about the brightest of the M announcers.

  60. huhwhat on July 1st, 2007 1:49 pm

57 – You can tell he’s a big time Beltre fan, cause that’s the only jersey I swear I see him wear. He even has the Dominican Jersey.

  61. thewyrm on July 1st, 2007 1:50 pm

Other than the time he excused playing Vidro at second base because we “needed his bat in the lineup” I coun’t myself a Blow fan. A statement like that really shows a lack of fundamental baseball knowledge however.

  62. Jeff Sullivan on July 1st, 2007 1:51 pm

  65. Ralph Malph on July 1st, 2007 1:53 pm

Rizzs says Ichiro has a 5 game hitting streak going.

I can see mentioning a 5 game streak if it’s Bloomquist, but for Ichiro it’s really not worth talking about.

  66. thewyrm on July 1st, 2007 1:54 pm

Oh quit being a hater, the rally fries rule.

  77. SpokaneMsFan on July 1st, 2007 2:02 pm

So Willie’s now batting over 300 w/11 RBIs in 89 ABs and Vidro’s at about .300 w/23 RBIs in 278 ABs. Did we somehow manage to spend the off season bringing in an incredibly overpriced DH that is a less effective hitter than WFB? That’s almost impressive in a sad and depressing kind of way.

  78. Paul B on July 1st, 2007 2:03 pm

They aren’t going to stop. But they don’t dwell on them as much as they did at first.

Less annoying than some of the between innings stuff at the ballpark.

  80. pumpkinhead on July 1st, 2007 2:04 pm

  81. Paul B on July 1st, 2007 2:04 pm

If Vidro was a slick fielding middle infielder, his .300 BA could carry his non-existent slugging and lack of walks.

    But as a DH, yuck.

I really hope Rally Fries isn’t a reference to those putrid pseudo-garlic fries that make me want to vomit every time I go to the ballpark. Truly, not to offend anyone, but those things are to garlic what Velveeta is to cheese.

An’ another thing…how come I can get “red carded” for standing up and yelling “You suck!” at an opposing player, but not for ruining someone’s night with a disgusting, greasy, vomitous, vile, foul, repugnant paper tray of soggy, not-even-a-fly-would-land-on-these garlic fries that I am devouring and gassing everyone in a three-row radius with? Talk about backwards priorities!

Question: What is the role playing game of choice for the Seattle Mariners lineup?

    Answer: Hackmaster

  93. kenshabby on July 1st, 2007 2:17 pm

My main complaint about the garlic fries is that I always get a sub-standard amount of fries. I also have to brush my teeth 8-10 times to get the garlic taste out of my mouth.

  94. smb on July 1st, 2007 2:18 pm

Difference in preferences, I guess. Enjoy your Bud Light…I’ll have a Redhook. Enjoy your “garlic” fries, I’ll bring a sandwich in from Salumi. Keep chanting Raaauuullll, I’ll try to start an Adam Jones chant. :-)

Has Dave ever said anything about Neyer? I am a huge Rob Neyer fan, and a huge Dave fan…I’d be sad to hear it if Dave lumps Neyer in with the rest of the ESPN schlocks.

  106. msb on July 1st, 2007 2:29 pm

I had to go back & see what Baker said about Marcum the other day

“there’s Marcum, a recent draft pick and “swingman” type of call-up the past two seasons who has come out of nowhere to be a rotation mainstay in 2007. Marcum threw six no-hit innings back in May and has steadily gone deeper into games. “

  107. S-Mac on July 1st, 2007 2:32 pm

Dave, I think, believes Neyer has now become irrelevant.

  108. Rick L on July 1st, 2007 2:33 pm

    95. He would probably say something similar to what he said in a post a few days ago, that Weaver is putting on a clinic in how to pitch, varying speeds, changing pitches, hitting his spots, upsetting the batters’s timing.

  109. carcinogen on July 1st, 2007 2:35 pm

  110. smb on July 1st, 2007 2:36 pm

    S-Mac,
From a peer perspective I can definitely see that. Neyer sure isn’t innovating and bringing value to the frontiers of statistical analysis like Dave does. But as a casual fan, I love to read his articles anyway. There’s room for some semi-fluff out there…at least Neyer isn’t an idiot like so many others.

  111. JG on July 1st, 2007 2:38 pm

For those of us without insider, what did Neyer say?

  112. smb on July 1st, 2007 2:40 pm

    I hope I don’t get sued for this…

Over at U.S.S. Mariner, blogger Dave Cameron tried to guess the purpose of the Mariners’ press conference this morning:

I don’t know what the news is, but here are my guesses.

    60% – Ichiro extension
    25% – Bavasi/Hargrove extensions
    10% – Trade Announcement
5% – Free Nintendo Wii for Derek

An extension for Ichiro would make my day.

He might have added: 0% — Mike Hargrove is quitting

Because when’s the last time a manager resigned with his team riding a seven-game winning streak? Probably never. The first person who comes to my mind is Eddie Stanky. A fairly successful manager in the 1950s with the Cardinals, and in the 1960s with the White Sox, Stanky was hired as Rangers manager in June 1977. In his first game, the Rangers beat the Twins 10-8.

Then he quit. Stanky had left his job as head baseball coach at South Alabama — he’d turned the Jaguars into national powers — and that’s where his heart still was. As he explained, “After the excitement calmed down, I started getting lonesome and homesick.”

But this is nothing like that. Hargrove is an established major league manager. With the exception of 2004, he’s managed every season since the middle of the 1991 season, when he took over in Cleveland.

Maybe this is the cynic in me, but I can’t help but wonder if there’s something we’ve not been told yet. I worry that Hargrove’s been diagnosed with some serious illness. All we can do is hope that’s not the case. And then there’s the possibility that he wants to quit while he’s ahead. Hargrove’s last six teams — four in Baltimore, two in Seattle — finished in fourth place, most of them with records well below .500.

But Hargrove’s 2007 Mariners are riding high. They’re in second place with a 44-33 record. Can they maintain this pace, though? The Mariners have the fourth-best record in the American League, but only the eighth-best run differential. Maybe this particular Mariner knows when it’s time to jump ship.

  113. smb on July 1st, 2007 2:41 pm

Actually, if they can post Dave’s copywrited material, why can’t we post theirs here? Touche!

  114. _David_ on July 1st, 2007 2:41 pm

The Jays’ 96 OPS+ kind of shocks me, because I think of the hitters they have, how they hit last year (106 OPS+), and how they added Thomas. I guess having Lind, Clayton and a bad Wells playing everyday will really drag you down.

  115. Rick L on July 1st, 2007 2:43 pm

Weaver is looking as good as he once looked bad. If his second half is reasonable solid, as it was last year, we may only have mediocre starting pitching instead of horrible starting pitching.

  116. kenshabby on July 1st, 2007 2:46 pm

smb – As I speculated in the “M’s to make announcement” post it sounded to me like Hargrove may be suffering from depression, based on observations made by those around him and on his own behavior and comments. He said that the highs weren’t high enough and the lows were too low, which sounds like someone struggling with depression.

Like many here I wasn’t a big fan of him as manager but if he is indeed dealing with some illness or personal issue I wish him well. Suddenly resigning is surprising; not even waiting for the All-Star break is shocking.

  117. Rick L on July 1st, 2007 2:48 pm

    112. I don’t buy the official explanation either. Something probably went on behind the scenes that we will never know about.

  118. kenshabby on July 1st, 2007 2:48 pm

BTW, Weaver’s ERA has dropped below 7. Time for a drink! (of water.)

  120. Rick L on July 1st, 2007 2:50 pm

Dave says “Willie Boom Boom on deck”

  125. smb on July 1st, 2007 2:52 pm

Yes, that sounds plausible. Speaking from experience, it’s a tough position to be in to know how good you have it and still have those feelings of depression. Recognizing it and seeking help, if that is indeed the case, is something for which Hargrove should be commended. Again, if that’s the case, I’m glad he left of his own accord rather than getting canned, which may have made it worse for him. Whatever the impetus behind his “lack of passion” is, I sincerely hope he regains his zest for life and gets himself back on track.

  184. jamest on July 1st, 2007 3:40 pm

182 – Clearly Jason Ellison serves no purpose. Ben Broussard is earning ABs, Jose Guillen keeps getting it done with the glove and arm (even the bat today). Unless this team is willing to deep six Vidro and clear up the DH spot for Raul, we won’t see AJ or Wlad until Sept.

  185. _David_ on July 1st, 2007 3:41 pm

Why the hell isn’t Ryan Howard in the top 5 NL 1B vote? Did fans forget that he won (though he didn’t deserve it) the MVP last year? Sure he was injured, but he’s played 63 games with a 142 OPS+

  193. carcinogen on July 1st, 2007 3:44 pm

Dang it! Broussard could have at least gotten to third…you have to score, Ellison!

  194. darrylzero on July 1st, 2007 3:44 pm

184, what about a soft-platoon in RF/DH with Guillen, Ibanez, and Vidro? Vidro plays the least, but still plays when there’s tough righty (sit Guillen) or a tough lefty (sit Ibanez). Assuming Jones also gets a day off here and there (or Ichiro, giving Jones a CF start), all of those guys get a fair amount of playing time. Now that Hargrove’s gone, maybe that’s not such an impossibility.

Broussard I’m assuming will be dealt for pitching, since I can’t imagine Bavasi not deciding he’s a “buyer” and he’s one of our most valuable chips.

  195. pygmalion on July 1st, 2007 3:45 pm

  199. jamest on July 1st, 2007 3:47 pm

I don’t think anybody has a problem with DFA’ing Ellison and bringing up Jones, EXCEPT that their are no ABs for Jones. I don’t see him sitting on the bench being a good thing.

Now if you remove Vidro, have Ibanez DH and rotate have an outfield rotation of Jones and Broussard in left, that would work. Too bad it won’t happen.

  205. pumpkinhead on July 1st, 2007 3:49 pm

0 for everything with runners in scoring position. That’s gotta be at least 0-7.

who could they have subbed in? DP vidro?

  208. jamest on July 1st, 2007 3:50 pm

194 – I don’t really see the M’s dealing Broussard for pitching because he wouldn’t fetch anything of value unless you package him with Clement or Balentien. I’d make that deal if it brought a quality arm in return but it would take all three to get a Buerhle (maybe not even then).

  209. Rick L on July 1st, 2007 3:51 pm

199 There are at bats for Jones if you drop Ellison and put Vidro on the bench. Trade either Broussard or Sexson for pitching.

  210. Axtell on July 1st, 2007 3:51 pm

Another great outing for Weaver…is it really possible that his injury was what had him pitching so miserably, and that his recovery from said injury is going to have him pitching like this for the rest of the year?

  211. jamest on July 1st, 2007 3:52 pm

194 – Also, you don’t want to sit Guillen on a regular basis. He is not a guy who handles a diminished roll very well. Better to trade him and just bring up Jones to take his spot.

  212. Lauren, token chick on July 1st, 2007 3:52 pm

Great play by Beltre…if he doesn’t win the gold glove this year I’m going to be upset.

  215. jamest on July 1st, 2007 3:55 pm

209 – That is a great idea. But do you think the M’s will bench Vidro? It hasn’t happened yet and I don’t think it will, not for Jones. Veteran players don’t like to see rookies just handed starting jobs. It’s an unspoken rule for veteran ball clubs and one that McLaren won’t break. Especially not with the wins rolling in.

  216. reality3 on July 1st, 2007 3:55 pm

Bring Jones and Reed up. Send Ellison down and place Vidro for assignment. This solves your Offense and Defense in the outfield for now.

  217. LA M's Fan on July 1st, 2007 3:55 pm

Well, at least Hargrove is leaving us with one last good use of the bullpen…

  218. mr.smartypants on July 1st, 2007 3:55 pm

I disagree that you can get decent pitching for Broussard or Sexson, teams usually want at least one quality prospect in addition to a player than can help right away, and the mariners don’t want to lose balentien, clement, or jones. If Buerhle is traded, he’ll go for a lot more than a Broussard.

What I’m afraid of is Bavasi deciding that he likes some mediocre pitcher than he CAN get for just Broussard or Guillen or somebody and sacrificing a quality hitter for a second Horacio Ramirez.

  219. jamest on July 1st, 2007 3:56 pm

216 – Why Reed? That suggestion baffles me…

  223. Norm Charlton Fan Club on July 1st, 2007 4:02 pm

  224. cougs129 on July 1st, 2007 4:03 pm

I beg to differ if he was on a team that gave run support he would have a damn good record

  225. jamest on July 1st, 2007 4:03 pm

Better than Ellison, sure, but how does that get Jones ABs? Another outfielder isn’t the answer, we need additon by subtraction that equals ABs. Vidro won’t get cut. It’s a great thought but not going to happen. What regular could actually be moved (realistically)? Raul? No. Ichiro? Not a chance. Guillen? Maybe, but he would be a salary dump to somebody. Vidro? Nobody wants him.

Guillen, Broussard, and Ellison are the most likely pieces to be moved. I just don’t see it.

  226. jamest on July 1st, 2007 4:04 pm

  248. reality3 on July 1st, 2007 4:12 pm

It get’s Reed a chance to perform again. If he does pretty well it gives him trade value before the dealine. Yes? No? Maybe So?

  249. Mr. Egaas on July 1st, 2007 4:14 pm

I don’t want Reed anywhere near the Seattle line-up right now. Give those ABs to Adam Jones instead.

  250. Ralph Malph on July 1st, 2007 4:16 pm

Ahh…the old “showcase” theory. I don’t think “showcasing” a guy for a trade is a reason to play someone in a pennant race.

Reed has had a chance to perform every day in Tacoma this year. He’s done OK — not great. Other teams can look at him and figure out his trade value (if any) based on what he’s done. Giving him 50 at bats isn’t going to add trade value even if he hits a ton in them.

The trick as someone said is finding AB and a roster spot for Jones. Reed doesn’t help with either of those issues.

  251. geofftoons on July 1st, 2007 4:18 pm

Excellent win!! Thanks Grover, I was never a huge fan, but I was this year, you did a great job!! Best of luck.

And although a lot of people rag on Guillen, I think he’s responsible for a lot of the good attitude this year. From his reaction before the game to Hargrove leaving, I think he feels like he belongs here, and I’m glad to have him! Good job today Guillen!!!

  252. Ralph Malph on July 1st, 2007 4:20 pm

    Reed’s OPS in Tacoma: 758
    Vidro’s OPS in Seattle: 714

If you reduce Reed’s number to its major league equivalent you get something like Vidro: a guy who will hit for some average but without much power. Mehhh.

  253. Axtell on July 1st, 2007 4:21 pm

I have to wonder if a new manager will get Jones any closer to a spot on the big league roster?

    Next 3 Series:

3 game series vs. KC – A great opportunity to extend the current winning streak
4 game series vs. Oak – This could be one of the most important series for Oakland in a while (obviously important for the Ms as well)
4 game series vs. Det – A key series in the wild card race against a very tough opponent
