M’s scored 200% more runs in that second debacle, indicating to me that their impending win streak will stretch for 24 games. (Either that or my burgeoning stat-geekiness still requires a bit of refinement.)

  2. Typical Idiot Fan on July 4th, 2007 12:42 pm

So is that the plan? Have one dude every so often get roasted by the opposing team to “tire them out” or “suck all the hot out of them”? Not sure how that works for the teams they beat afterward, tho…

  3. joser on July 4th, 2007 1:07 pm

No, see all teams have to obey the Mariner’s Pythag over the course of the season, so if the M’s have a lot of Runs Against run up against them in one game, regression to the mean demands that all the other teams not score as many runs to compensate, and the M’s thus have a better shot at winning those games.

By the same reasoning, I turn the heat up really high in the winter so that I’ll be cooler in the summer.

  4. bakomariner on July 4th, 2007 1:09 pm

just watched the first inning last night, but the kid looked terrible…got to send him down and bring up somebody else…not ho-ram either…they gotta get burhle!

Brian Bannister is this year’s poster child for ERA’s unreliability as a pitching talent indicator.

  6. dingla on July 4th, 2007 1:20 pm

    Anyone know hows Joh doing?

How bout’ them dogs! Kobayashi is still the one. He’ll reclaim his crown…

    Happy 4th to all!

  7. bakomariner on July 4th, 2007 1:23 pm

    from the “official” site-

KANSAS CITY — Kenji Johjima left Tuesday’s game in the second inning against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium with a contusion of the second metacarpal on his right hand.
Johjima was struck by a pitch that hit Mark Teahen. Nothing is broken and X-rays are negative. He is listed as day-to-day, but will likely not play Wednesday.

  8. Gomez on July 4th, 2007 2:06 pm

Years ago, Johjima had surgery on his hand and had a plate with metal screws put into his hand. Apparently, the ball hit one of the screws, which caused incredible pain up his entire arm upon impact.

I am going to the game tonight, it better turn out better then when I went monday, and if it is anything like last night I might throw myself off the upper deck.

Dave, I know this is late, but I got a question about your future forty.

You said you think Wlad has a shot at being as good as Ordonez who you called an average right fielder. Now I never thought Ordonez was on his way to the hall or anything, but other than his rookie year and his two injury plagued years where he had less than 350 at bats, he has made the all star team 6 of 7 years (strangley, the one year he didn’t make the all star team was his best up until this one). I know the all stars aren’t perfect representations of who the best players are, but that does sound like a better than average player to me.

If Wlad is going to be making all star teams more often than not, wouldn’t that make him a pretty high level dude?

  12. IdahoInvader on July 4th, 2007 2:59 pm

  13. JR Ewing on July 4th, 2007 3:04 pm

  14. bakomariner on July 4th, 2007 3:20 pm

9- never checked out youtube before…that shit was funny…thanks…

  15. eponymous coward on July 4th, 2007 3:52 pm

One thing to consider is Ordonez was playing in a park that HELPED him (and Comerica isn’t an extreme pitcher’s park any more, it’s close to neutral), and Wlad, if he stays a Mariner, will be in a park that will absolutely kill him as a RH pull hitter. I think Wlad’s perceived value would be much better in someplace like Chicago or Texas than Seattle, and that might be a big factor in deciding to keep or trade him.

  16. Lucky Number on July 4th, 2007 3:57 pm

Happy 4th of July everyone. Go M’s!

  17. Jar on July 4th, 2007 3:58 pm

We are getting ready to head to the park, but it’s pouring out right now, hopefully the rain will let up.

So two days ago it was simple miscommunication. Yesterday it was the heat. Is it just me or does McLaren make excuses more than Hargrove?

“So two days ago it was simple miscommunication. Yesterday it was the heat. Is it just me or does McLaren make excuses more than Hargrove?”

I had an excuse to come up with excuses.

    Poor M’s!

Not even Beltre throws out Ichiro on that ball down the line.

  24. juneau_fan on July 4th, 2007 5:35 pm

    23. I think Ichiro was already unfastening his elbow protector by the time Gordon got the throw off.

Good try to hit into the DP, Ibanez. Better luck next at bat.

    I’ve seen this movie before.

  26. IdahoInvader on July 4th, 2007 5:37 pm

Lets hope, UNLIKE game one, we won’t crap on the astro turf the next ten innings.

There’s something incredibly dull about the Royals, poor bastards.

  32. bakomariner on July 4th, 2007 5:43 pm

what a great way to start the 4th of july party! 4-0!

Take that Royals! Anything you can do … we can do better.

  34. bakomariner on July 4th, 2007 5:44 pm

yuni has absolutely no patience…this guy has no command right now…take some pitches…

  35. juneau_fan on July 4th, 2007 5:45 pm

    yu-bet!

  37. IdahoInvader on July 4th, 2007 5:48 pm

  46. SebPruiti on July 4th, 2007 6:08 pm

Well, Gameday Audio on MLB.com is free until the 14th. As a Mariner fan from Jersey, thats pretty cool, now I don’t have to wait for those little colored balls to appear on a picture of some shadowy figure with a default strike zone.

  47. RussM on July 4th, 2007 6:13 pm

    46 – Sweet! I am also a displaced M’s fan in Jersey.

  48. SebPruiti on July 4th, 2007 6:17 pm

    47 – http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/gameday_audio.jsp?c_id=mlb

Also, I am loving the Mariner’s commentators already…silly ass BBQ chatter.

  49. RussM on July 4th, 2007 6:21 pm

48 – Thanks.. I have mlb.tv. I’ve been using it for the past three seasons. Absolutely the best investment that one can make!!! (they should pay me for that endorsement)

  50. SebPruiti on July 4th, 2007 6:24 pm

49 – How much is it? Now I am just a college student so I am pretty sure I can’t afford it. Also, do you know if it gets cheaper if half the season has passed already?

  51. thenatural on July 4th, 2007 6:26 pm

you can do it on a monthly basis… 19.95 for premium or 14.95 for regular…

i have premium, and i dont notice all that much of a difference between the two

  52. RussM on July 4th, 2007 6:28 pm

49 – about $20/month. And yes, it gets cheaper as the season goes by. If you can’t afford it, baseball on XM radio is awesome too, about $8/month.

Also, to keep this thread relevant, Wilkerson continues to be awesome for the Mariners…

  53. RussM on July 4th, 2007 6:32 pm

The 700K feed for premium is much better than the 400K feed, but maybe not worth the 5 bucks per month if you’re trying to budget.

  54. juneau_fan on July 4th, 2007 6:59 pm

    There’s a brush back…and then there’s a brush DOWN!

  55. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 7:05 pm

I can tell now how Rob Neyer must feel all the time. It is so boring watching Royals games – I can’t bring myself to sit here and watch, I keep leaving and going outside to enjoy the sun (but then I also have to endure Rizzs … grrrrr). Please game …. end soon.

  56. RussM on July 4th, 2007 7:08 pm

The Royals tv feed just showed their July 24 “George Brett Pine Tar” t-shirt giveaway. Powder blue brett jersey t-shirt with black stains on it. Classic!

  57. juneau_fan on July 4th, 2007 7:11 pm

    55. I know what you mean. I can’t put my finger on what’s so boring about them. The lack of star players? Supposedly, there’s some exciting rookies on this team, but which one of the striking out, muffing balls players are they? They’re not even bad enough to be truly entertaining in a trainwreck way. There’s a decent crowd there today, and yet even the fans seem to be lulled into some sort of coma.

Just win, M’s. Make this worth my time.

  58. dennycrain on July 4th, 2007 7:12 pm

So did they end up giving frys to the camera guy? Pretty weak if so.

  59. juneau_fan on July 4th, 2007 7:14 pm

IMO at the free fries! Now they’ve terrified some poor woman into thinking a stranger’s trying to poison her children!

  60. JR Ewing on July 4th, 2007 7:15 pm

    Good news in Texas…

Rangers are kickin’ up their heels, chasing Weaver. One in and two on and NO outs.

3-2 Texas with more coming in this inning we hope!

  63. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 7:39 pm

This looks to be a new record (in recent times) for fewest in game posts. Not much to write about.

  65. pygmalion on July 4th, 2007 7:44 pm

What happened? GameDay died, as it often does when the M’s do something bad.

  66. joser on July 4th, 2007 7:44 pm

Holiday, away game, boring opponent, couple of big bats out on injuries, on the heels of a couple of demoralizing losses. If I wasn’t doing chores with the radio on I wouldn’t be paying attention to this game at all.

  67. pygmalion on July 4th, 2007 7:45 pm

Nevermind, it finally got itself together.

At least it wasn’t a triple play.

  69. RussM on July 4th, 2007 7:46 pm

  72. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 7:51 pm

4 runs ahead but JJ comes in with 2 on … save situation? Does the tieing run have to be on deck or in the hole?

  73. hititagainandagainandagain on July 4th, 2007 7:52 pm

He comes into the game with the potential tying run either on base, at bat, or on deck.

  74. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 7:52 pm

Survivorman does it again – JJ is beyond awesome!

  75. pygmalion on July 4th, 2007 7:52 pm

72 Save rules are complicated. My gut reaction is that it is but I don’t know why I think that.

  76. EastCoastMsFan on July 4th, 2007 7:53 pm

    Nice win for Mac.

  78. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 7:54 pm

3 outs in 2 pitches, right?. What more can you say about the guy?

  79. zzyzx on July 4th, 2007 7:54 pm

    Wow, 2 pitch save.

  80. RussM on July 4th, 2007 7:54 pm

Putz = crazy crazy CRAZY good

  81. pygmalion on July 4th, 2007 7:55 pm

Amazing that a game this boring with so little scoring could run 2 hours 40 minutes.

  82. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 7:55 pm

According to mlb.com, that was a save. I know a save can be registered with a 5 run lead so I think the rule is the tieing run has to be in the hole, not on deck.

  83. Ninja Jordan on July 4th, 2007 7:55 pm

I was under the impression that this isn’t a save situation (because of the 4 run lead).

  84. BKM on July 4th, 2007 7:56 pm

Even if it isn’t another save for JJ, it preserves a shutout for Wash…. and after Monday and yesterday, it’s good for the psyche.

  85. IdahoInvader on July 4th, 2007 7:56 pm

    TWO pitches/three outs?

Was he pitching for or AGAINST the M’s?

    ;-)

  86. Ninja Jordan on July 4th, 2007 7:56 pm

    interesting, thanks

  87. juneau_fan on July 4th, 2007 7:58 pm

Since there was nothing to talk about in this game, the announcers spent their entire time chewing down their nails worrying about the upcoming series in Oakland.

They may be right. Losing a series in Oakland, then having an entire week to brood on it could be very demoralizing.

  88. RussM on July 4th, 2007 7:59 pm

JJ came in with the tying run on deck + was the last pitcher for the winning team + not the winning pitcher = save.

  89. fishiam on July 4th, 2007 8:01 pm

Russ M has it right. The M’s were 4 ahead and 2 were on base when JJ came in. The batter he first faced was (potentially) run number 3 and the on deck batter was (potentially) run number 4.

  90. pygmalion on July 4th, 2007 8:01 pm

Hopefully someone has the rules handy. My rule of thumb is that if it would be a save situation if the bases were suddenly cleared, then it is already a save situation. Since I don’t think that you can have a six run save I don’t think that this is totally accurate but it can give you a feel for whether it is a save opp or not.

  91. JWay on July 4th, 2007 8:02 pm

88 is right, also you can register a save if you pitch the last 3 innings of a game. regardless of score.

  92. Ninja Jordan on July 4th, 2007 8:09 pm

Kara Capuano has a big head.

  93. RussM on July 4th, 2007 8:31 pm

Gagne comes in with a two run lead + pitches one full inning + is the last pitcher for the winning team + is not the winning pitcher = save.

HA HA HA HA HA !!!!!! 3.5 games back.

  94. joser on July 4th, 2007 8:40 pm

Damned Tiger beat the Indians, though. Honestly don’t know which team to cheer for (like when the A’s/Angels play the Yankees — you sort of just want a huge crack to open in the earth and swallow both teams). But since the Indians currently own the division and the Tigers are the team to beat for the WC, I’m cheering for the Indians. Until/unless the Tigers take the AL Central lead, then I’m cheering for the Tigers.

  95. joser on July 4th, 2007 8:53 pm

We got good news and we got bad news. The good news: the M’s go into Oakland with a win. The bad news: they face the cream of the A’s pitching staff. The good news: Harden may not be completely healthy / back in a groove yet, and we might get Bad Gaudin (5 runs in 4 IP vs Houston June 14th) rather than Good Gaudin (7 inning shutouts he’s pitched 3 times already this season, including last weekend vs the Yankees). The bad news: the Angels have another game against the Rangers and then 3 against the Yankees, which is bound to pad their W-L. The good news: the Tigers have 3 against the Red Sox. So even if the M’s can’t make up ground on the Angels, they have a shot to catch the Tigers in the Wild Card by the All Star Game. And immediately after it, they play Detroit in a series where the WC spot could be in the balance every game. Talk about an amazing week of baseball…

(Man, the Angels are in the cream-puff part of their schedule: after the ASB, they get Texas again and then the lost-ten-in-a-row Rays. Sigh)

  96. Jar on July 4th, 2007 8:57 pm

Well, the outcome was better. Pretty bland game after the first though.

The most drama came from the post game fireworks show, they tryed to start the show 4 times, then had as all waiting there for half an hour to finaly call the show due to soggy fireworks from the rain. They did however offer free game tickets to anyone with a ticket to tonights game. To bad that was the last Mariners game of the year.

  97. earinc on July 4th, 2007 11:52 pm

The M’s lose 2 out of 3 and pick up ground on the Angels. If we’re going to lose a series, that’s the way to do it.

  98. Bomberboy on July 5th, 2007 12:09 am

Very concerned about the run scoring ability/inability. See M’s total bases, extra base hits….The team gets more winnable pitching than we give them credit for but the run production is bad, very bad…even during these wins…by the way…trade Ichiro NOW…get two solid pitching prospects and move him…he will cost $18 M per for 4-5 years and will not be worth the money he will tie up….I say move him while he commands some value…and he is not a team guy, he is a stats guy…no leadership at all….probably the single reason why Hargrove left….

  99. DKCecil on July 5th, 2007 1:23 am

I think you just made a whole blog’s worth of enemies.

  100. eponymous coward on July 5th, 2007 1:35 am

trade Ichiro NOW…get two solid pitching prospects and move him…

Because, you know, a team that concerns you about run scoring and gets what you consider winnable pitching is obviously improved by removing their best offensive player and getting zero offense in return, just some minor league arms.

With such deep insight, it’s amazing you’re not writing your OWN popular M’s blog.

  101. Carson on July 5th, 2007 3:07 am

You know, it’s not all that bad. After the two losses, and then a win, we GAINED half a game on the Angels. That makes me feel a hell of a lot better than the way the team took a dump after their last long win streak.

  102. pygmalion on July 5th, 2007 5:44 am

98 There is so much wrong with what you say that I don’t know where to start, but can only recommend that you read anything Dave has written recently about trading Ichiro.

I will ask you one thing though: WHY isn’t Ichiro worth $18 million? I’m sure that he is worth more than that just in terms of sales of team merchandise, especially in Japan. (Hint: they aren’t buying Ibanez “Face of the Franchise” jerseys in Tokyo).

  103. IMissBenDavis on July 5th, 2007 7:40 am

Ichiro is worth 18$M. In perspective the the cashola we lavish on Sexson, Beltre, and other players of mediochre/inconsisitent skills, I’d take an always-healthy, always hard-working, always-feared-hitter who will become an ace pitcher when he turns 40. Cy Ichiro!

  104. joser on July 5th, 2007 8:09 am

If Ichiro! is the single reason Hargrove left, then he’s worth much more than 18M. That’s called making the team better. That’s leadership.

As for trading Ichiro! “while he still has value”: he’s going to command value for some time (his skillset ages well, and he may take better care of himself than anybody in baseball), and not just on the field. I realize asking you to read all the background material on this site may be like handing a dictionary to a cow, but at least understand the M’s will likely get as much or more value if they just let him leave at the end of the season than if they pull off a deadline trade. Sure, that value is longer-term in the form of draft picks rather than near-MLB arms, but given the FO’s track record, wouldn’t you rather have that value determined by Fontaine draft evaluations than by Bavasi’s trading skills?

  105. bakomariner on July 5th, 2007 9:19 am

ichiro should be re-signed at all costs…period…

  106. mln on July 5th, 2007 11:19 am

re: #9. That YouTube video on Ichiro vs. Hargrove must have been made by Grover himself. Either that or somebody really hates Ichiro.

  107. Karen on July 5th, 2007 12:25 pm

#98. I’d say from his username, Bomberboy is someone who wants Ichiro traded to the Yankees for “two solid pitching prospects” — no doubt not named Phil Hughes, Joba Chamberlain, Ian Kennedy, or Alan Horne. Yeah, like Ichiro really WANTS to move to that train wreck of a team before all those expensive contracts expire.
