USSM/Lookout Landing Event Announcement
Interest level was high enough that we’re going to make this happen. Jeff Sullivan and I are both going to be flying into town and hosting a pair of trips to the ballpark at the beginning of August. We’ve been putting on USSM events for several years now, and without fail, people always suggest that we should do them more often, so this year, we’re doubling the fun, and throwing in some minor league action to boot. Here are the official details:
Where: Cheney Stadium, Tacoma
When: Thursday, August 2nd
How Much: $25 per person
Includes: Ticket to game in USSM/LL seating area, hot dog, chips, and soda
and
Where: Everett Memorial Stadium, Everett
When: Friday, August 3rd
How Much: $20 per person
Includes: Ticket to game in USSM/LL seating area, fun time to be had by all
If you’ve ever been to a USSM event before, you know that we generally try pretty hard to make sure you get your money’s worth, and I’d expect these two games to be no different. Seeing as how the games occur just a couple of days after the trade deadline, we’ll certainly have no shortage of interesting topics to discuss, as well as just enjoying some Rainiers/Aquasox baseball.
Due to the nature of buying tickets in advance, we’re asking people to pay when they register so that we can avoid taking a bath on last minute no-shows. So, if you want to reserve a spot to either (or both) games, you need to:
Send an email to ussmarinerfeed@gmail.com.
In the subject, put Everett or Tacoma, followed by the number of guests you’re registering – i.e. Everett, (2)
In the body of the email, give us the full names of the people you are registering for.
If you are registering for both games, please send two seperate emails – it will make it easier for me to keep the registration accurate if I can separate the emails by event.
After your registration has been received, I’ll send out a confirmation email letting you know how to send payment. You are not officially registered until your payment has been received, so please plan on having your payment sent out in a timely fashion. We’re going to cap the attendance of the events in order to make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone, so if you want to attend, I highly suggest getting on the list as soon as possible.
Questions about the events, feel free to use the comments below, and I’ll answer them as best as I can.

I’ve never been to the stadium in Tacoma before. How hard is it to get down there in time for the game from either Bellevue or the U-District in Seattle?
Anyone want to carpool?
it can be quite the trek from seattle to tacoma during rush hour. without traffic it takes about 30 minutes. with traffic anywhere from 40 minutes and up.
What times for Tacoma and Everett?
Once we get everyone signed up, I’ll begin to organize carpools for people who will be traveling from different areas.
The games start at 7 pm – the events will begin a bit earlier than that. Exact time TBA.
What might the nature of any pre-game events be?
Or is this more of a “hang out at a ballgame with USSM/LL”?
I’m working on getting a special guest for a pre-game Q&A. The timing is the tough part, and getting a commitment this far out is basically impossible, which is why I’m not announcing anything.
But, you know, we’ve done pretty well at getting some cool people to show up in the past.
Can you think of any way in which going to the Safeco event would NOT violate my vow to not spend money on a game this year?
Oh. Uh. I should read a hell of a lot more carefully, shouldn’t I.
Never mind.
(I thought I recalled from the previous post that there would be one Safeco event and one minor-league event. Clearly, I was smoking the crack. My apologies.)
Isn’t thursday dollar beer / hot dog/ soda / ice cream day at Cheney?
I have to say Lauren’s crack-smoking monologue totally makes this thread. I don’t know where Corcoran is (stuck in Idaho traffic, no doubt) but whatever it is he has, it’s catching.
Isn’t thursday dollar beer / hot dog/ soda / ice cream day at Cheney?
Shhhhhh. How else do you think they can afford to offer that stuff and pay to fly Dave and Jason out? The good news is that if you want seconds, they’ll be just as cheap.
I’m working on getting a special guest…
For Everett, the vocal stylings of Nick Lachey?
Nick Lachey is a part owner of the Rainers.
The $1 hot dogs in Everett are… well, they’re the kind of hotdogs you buy in an eight-pack at the store. They may even be chicken dogs.
But they ARE a dollar.
If you go to Everett, take a light jacket – the breeze starts coming in at night and it can get chilly.
One question I have is about the carpools: I don’t mind Everett since it is close to my home anyway and I deal with the traffic. Tacoma is another matter entirely. I’d go if I knew there was a carpool going from Bellevue. Is anyone else interested from leaving, say, the Eastgate P&R?
Honestly, why is it so hard to keep straight?
Tacoma = Aug 2 = $1 beer, $1 (tiny) hot dog, $1 (tiny) soda, $1 coffee, $1 ice cream sandwich night. Games in Tacoma start at 7:05pm, but if Dave has pre-game event, that’d be at least an hour earlier. At least.
Everett = Aug 3 = no $1 beer. However, Everett on 8/3 does = youth bat giveaway night (first 1K kids under 15), scratch ticket giveaway (first 1K adults) plus the zooperstars. Game starts at 7:05, if Dave has pre-game event, that’d back up start time at least an hour.
I don’t know this for a fact, but I think the commute to Everett OR Tacoma originating from Seattle during rush hour would be about equally hellish, though my experience generally shows Friday traffic to be almost exponentially worse than Thursday traffic.
Seattle-Tacoma is a longer drive than Seattle-Everett, but I-5 south of the brewery usually moves pretty well during rush hour. Seattle-Everett always has a slowdown somewhere.
Friday night is very hit-or-miss in terms of bad traffic. First week of August is vacation season, though.
I’d say if you live/work north of the Ship Canal or north of downtown Bellevue, Everett is a no-brainer. South of the airport and Tukwila, Tacoma is a no-brainer.
There’s an M’s game on Friday but not on Thursday, so factor that into traffic.
Friday can be better than you think, because (a) many people take Friday off if they’re doing a three-day weekend; and (b) everyone else leaves at 3pm.
When’s the confirmation email coming out?
11: Ironically, I was stuck in Idaho traffic at the time of your post.
We’re flying me up from Calistoga, CA? I’d actually consider driving (I can be in Tacoma in ~12 hours) if I thought there was any chance I could get the time off.
Traffic is bad. You want to carpool if you can. Dave, thanks for helping arrange them.
Personal experiences. The year the Sonics played in Tacoma, I went to 7 games. We were a carpool and traffic was still awful. Of course, there were 6000 cars driving down from Seattle those nights and I hope they’ve improved the HOV lanes since then. I used to date a girl who lived in Everett when I worked in Seattle (Fremont). Took me 25-30 minutes to get to work from her place in the AM and an hour minimum to get to her place after work; Fridays were the worst.
I just wanted to note/ask that I reserved for Thursday and then had to cancel. I sent mail to the address link above but wanted to make sure that that was going to be enough.
I have a conflict. I wish I could make it and put some faces (and personalities) with the handles on here. Maybe next time.
David
When is the deadline for registration?
