Game 97, Rangers at Mariners

Dave · July 24, 2007 at 1:39 pm · Filed Under Mariners

Feierabend vs Rheinecker, 2:05 pm.

Game 1 of the double-header features two emergency Triple-A starters. Both are lefties. Both teams hit lefties better. The ball flies in Texas, especially in the afternoon. Expect a football score.

McLaren, by the way, bows to platoon splits, knowing that he has to use his bench today due to the combination of 18 innings and the Texas heat. So, with a lefty on the hill, Ellison starts in left, Bloomquist in center, Ichiro DH’s, and Ibanez and Vidro head to the bench.

Also, Mark Lowe will be activated from the DL at the end of the game, with Feierabend heading back to Tacoma. He’ll be eligible to pitch in game 2.

Dave, this obviously is an emergency start due to the schedule. However, do you think the M’s FO is possibly showcasing the 21 year old Lefty? I know this is not the type of game for that but still I’m a little curious. Just wondering your thoughts.

  2. Dave on July 24th, 2007 1:43 pm

Showcasing is a myth invented by rosterbaters to give themselves something to talk about. I’ll be happy if no one ever suggests playing time is related to trade talks ever again.

  3. Ralph Malph on July 24th, 2007 1:44 pm

He’d be “showcased” just as well making a start for Tacoma, since the opposing lineup would be just as good as Texas.

  4. Ralph Malph on July 24th, 2007 1:45 pm

I actually didn’t realize Desi Relaford was still alive.

  5. Ralph Malph on July 24th, 2007 1:45 pm

Desi Relaford when he got called up by the Rangers:

    “Lucy! I’m going to Texas!”

  6. Russ on July 24th, 2007 1:54 pm

Showcasing is a myth invented by rosterbaters

Showcasing is such a cliche. The whole trouble with the premise of showcasing is that the same player could have a crap day. Listen, GM’s know what players/positions they have interest in. They have scouts and tons of data for those players whom they may have interest in and watching them play a game isn’t a selling point. Advertising at ball games is best left to hot dogs and cold beer.

Rosterbation makes me laugh everytime I see it.

  7. Gomez on July 24th, 2007 1:57 pm

Everytime you rosterbate, God injures a AA prospect. Or something.

I’d find it funny if there was a such thing as Showcasing, and the M’s consciously decided to call up a 21 year old AAA lefty who isn’t quite ready for the bigs, so he could start a game in a launchpad.

  8. carcinogen on July 24th, 2007 1:57 pm

I wish McClaren’s decision to bench Vidro and Ibanez had more to do with platoon splits and less to do with the peculiar situation encountered in a double header in Tejas in july…but I suspect its the latter.

Let’s hope for visible affirmation of his choice, either way!

Does rosterbation cause me to have hairy palms?

Mariners call up a 21 year-old from Tacoma? Well at least they’re getting warmer.

  12. tgf on July 24th, 2007 2:03 pm

Let’s see…run Bloomquist out into center field or call up Jones….hmmmm……Let’s just run Bloomquist out there! He’s scraptastic!

  13. bhsmarine on July 24th, 2007 2:05 pm

What is the process of the Mariners making that roster move for Lowe in between games?

  14. zvazda on July 24th, 2007 2:05 pm

I bet the reason Jones hasn’t been called up is some deep dark secret about his past… like Treason.

Yeah, if only this organization had a good hitting right hander who could play center field…

  18. sfmcneil on July 24th, 2007 2:10 pm

I may be a little late on this, I only recently heard about this site. But I’m wondering, in spite of his performance last night, at what point does a player move from the “season long slump” category to the “no longer a major league caliber player” category. I am of course speaking about Richie Sexson. I don’t know the man personally, but as a fan of the game and the team, I’m disappointed in the player to say the least. Yes he hit a 3-run shot last night, but he also struck out with the bases loaded—-again. I am aware of the salary implications and how they play a role in Richie’s continuing to play, I just wonder if someone besides me feels the same way.
P.S. this is a very cool thing you all have going here.

  19. Colm on July 24th, 2007 2:11 pm

What exactly do the M’s think they would lose by bringing up Jones now? How do they suppose it would harm the team?

  20. zvazda on July 24th, 2007 2:13 pm

    The M’s have a strict no-treason policy.

    Welcome sfmcNEIL.

Ha! I had just looked up Desi a few weeks ago to see he’d just been called up to the major leagues. I had forgotten it was with Texas, though.

I guess I should start painting a BRING JONES UP NOW banner for Sunday’s game.

But he could have played it worse.

  49. byronebyronian on July 24th, 2007 2:46 pm

After I read the Neyer piece, I noticed Tristan Cockroft (or whatever his name is) had a list of trades he saw happening. In that list was an absurd deal of Jose Contreras for Jeremy Reed and Rob Johnson.

Do any of you guys think this could happen?

  50. Twin Cities Mariner on July 24th, 2007 2:47 pm

that came off retarded…i meant i could rosterbate all day watching willie followed by ellison

  51. bram on July 24th, 2007 2:49 pm

Rob Neyer is something of a poster boy for objective analysis, a Bill James protoge, and friend of USS Mariner. I was a loyal reader of his since the very beginning at ESPN.com until they started charging for his columns. I have a deep respect for his work and though I can’t claim to know him personally, on the few occasions I’ve been introduced to him he has come off as a gracious, personable guy.

So what I’m about to say isn’t personal and I feel bad even bringing it up. And I will try to be as objective as possible with something this indefinite by referring to a large sample, as it were, in his long body of work. But has anyone else noticed, over the years, a disdain for the Mariners, or perhaps more clearly for their managment, in Rob Neyery’s ESPN work?

Let me offer an example. Today ESPN is featuring Rob Neyer’s comments predicting the M’s will regress to the mean because their run differential is now flat (or near flat). No one who frequents this site and pays attention to statistical analysis would disagree – I certainly don’t.

My issue is, is this topic at this time worthy of the attention of a Rob Neyer? What service is this doing for his readers? Many of his readers probably already know the basic facts. Is it the most relevant topic right now, especially this week, when Neyer, who writes so well about history, could be talking about the historical significance of things like, I dunno, the potential reset of the game’s most sacred record?

I will give Neyer credit for at least talking about the most interesting facet of this question, which is *why* the M’s have outperformed their pythagorean thus far (partially Putz, he claims). But all this in the service of predicting the M’s are about to start to suck. What’s the piont of the predictions game? Isn’t that what MSM/Sports Radio types do instead of real analysis?

My point is this – it seems like Rob Neyer never misses a chance to point out flaws in the M’s regime and/or reasons why they’re about to fall apart, when it doesn’t seem to warrant much attention from his readership. Am I implying bias? Well, as much as it pains me, I suppose I am. Not in his analysis, but in his selection of what he’s going to talk about. For better or worse, he sets a certain agenda in the ongoing analytical conversation about MLB, and I, for one, don’t need to be repeatedly reminded how inferior the M’s front office is to, say, the Red Sox, Yankees or A’s in that regard.

I’m honestly not trying to start a flame war here, but I’m curious, do others see a similar pattern and if so, what are some theories about why? Say, for instance, if the M’s hewed more faithfully to the sabremetric cause, would Rob Neyer be not so quick to point it out when they fail?

    I’m just sayin, is all.

  52. Lauren, token chick on July 24th, 2007 2:51 pm

Yes, this is quite the high-scorer so far.

  53. robbbbbb on July 24th, 2007 2:51 pm

    Feierabend’s getting quick outs today.

  54. Axtell on July 24th, 2007 2:53 pm

    51-

Could be that the M’s hve seemingly played over their heads, are in the heat of playoff races nearing August, and yes, their story is relevant, even with Bonds’ eclipse of the HR record on the horizon.

I am sure many people out there are wondering who the Mariners are, and he’s simply pointing out the math that the RS/RA formula says they will come back to earth soon. Not that I agree with it, but it is due to happen if the numbers are to be believed.

  55. Dave on July 24th, 2007 2:55 pm

Neyer lived in Seattle for several years and now resides in Portland, where the M’s are stilll his local major league team. During most of his time as a Northwesterner, the M’s have been run poorly.

It’s not bias – it’s just opportunity. Rob talks about the M’s mismanagement because he has more personal experience with it than others.

I’ve said my peace about the decline in Rob’s writing over the years, so this isn’t a defense of his column, but there’s no reason to think he has an anti-Mariner bias.

Coming in late to the “showcasing discussion”…reminds me of the time years ago when Matt Young returned to pitch for the Mariners in 1990, his best year for them. He pitched a gem of a game against the Red Sox in Fenway (maybe the only gem of his career, at least the only one I remember).

He became a free agent that fall, and the Red Sox signed him. It’s still my feeling they wanted him based on that one game, and possibly the hope that he’d be another Bruce Hurst.

It didn’t work out very well — after 2+ years he was released, completed the year with the Indians, then retired.

    No.

  110. DAMellen on July 24th, 2007 3:54 pm

Rheinecker wasn’t especially dominant in AAA and he’s 28. This isn’t exactly a hot prospect. This is just embarassing.

  111. Logger on July 24th, 2007 3:57 pm

    Will Ichiro go yard already?

  112. C. Cheetah on July 24th, 2007 3:58 pm

    No.

  114. DAMellen on July 24th, 2007 3:58 pm

107 Was there any particular split you were referring to? A lot of them are very big (home/road, lefty/righty, etc), but was there one in particular you found hilarious?

  115. msb on July 24th, 2007 3:59 pm

Rheinecker wasn’t especially dominant in AAA and he’s 28. This isn’t exactly a hot prospect. This is just embarassing.

    but sadly, not unexpected.

    Ichiro post-ASB MVP: 244/293/311

  117. Kingfelix34 on July 24th, 2007 4:00 pm

If I’m Mac, I call a hit and run there with Willie. I agree you don’t try the bunt and take your chances with Ellison. I mean why not? could’ve avoided a double play. Regardless the offense once again looks lost up there against a guy who came from AAA, is 27, and will most likely be demoted once again soon. This is just ridiculous how we are playing lately.

  118. Tom on July 24th, 2007 4:01 pm

    Adam Jones, where art thou?

  119. nickpdx on July 24th, 2007 4:01 pm

No, not unexpected. I think at this point, I pretty much do expect the squad to get dominated when the opposing team runs out a guy with an ERA over 6. Feels that way, at any rate.

  120. Mike Honcho on July 24th, 2007 4:01 pm

114 – No, I just can’t help but look at some of those numbers and wonder why he’s still with the club.

And if the answer is that he has to, because we don’t have any better arms avaiable for the pen, then go ahead and mark down another reason why the Ramirez/Soriano trade was crap.

  121. joser on July 24th, 2007 4:02 pm

Good Morrow and bad Morrow all in one inning. How much longer can they leave him in? He goes full to what? Like 80% of the hitters he faces?

You know, in the spirit of today’s start by Mr. Germanic Unspellable, I’d like to propose another teutonic name for Morrow:
the German slang-word “Schmeisser” describes someone who throws something inaccurately, but with high force.

  122. Spadam on July 24th, 2007 4:04 pm

Nice inning there by Morrow. Will the late offense show up again?

  123. Lauren, token chick on July 24th, 2007 4:04 pm

God. That quote from McLaren is just really depressing. If we lose this game 2-1 and I have to think about it for awhile, I’ll have to just curl up under my desk and quietly sob into the evening. How long between games?

  124. SebPruiti on July 24th, 2007 4:04 pm

I can’t believe I am saying this, but that guy that guy from AAA is coming out of the game.

  125. Gregor on July 24th, 2007 4:04 pm

the German slang-word “Schmeisser” describes someone who throws something inaccurately, but with high force

In addition, it is also fairly close to another German slang word that describes fairly accurately how I feel about this game at this point.

  126. Kingfelix34 on July 24th, 2007 4:05 pm

PLEASE OFFENSE……let’s push one or two across here! 2-4, not that that is great news but let’s hope they get the job done.

  127. kolson82 on July 24th, 2007 4:06 pm

Does Ichiro hate Texas as much as Cleveland? He is swinging like he can’t wait to catch the next flight out of Arlington.

  128. joser on July 24th, 2007 4:07 pm

I was at the Rainiers game on Sunday and got a chance to talk to Adam Jones’ mom briefly. Nice lady. She loves her boy, and she loves watching him play baseball.
That’s cool. She sounded like a real character in that newspaper piece. I was tempted to go to a Rainiers game this weekend to see both of them, but between the weather and the traffic….

Yeah, if only this organization had a good hitting right hander who could play center field…
You know, here’s a comparison of AAA numbers:
    Player A: .291 / .374 / .568; 24 HR (43 XBH) and 82 K in 333 ABs
    Player B: .315 / .368 / .590; 23 HR (52 XBH) and 96 K in 378 ABs

Which one would you rather have? Which one do you think doesn’t belong in the majors?
Player B is of course Adam Jones; Player A is Shelley Duncan, who just got called up to the Yankees. Keep in mind Jones puts up those numbers playing half his games in Tacoma, which is significantly more pitcher-friendly than Duncan’s Scranton. Oh, and one other little thing: Duncan is a first baseman who can be pressed into playing corner outfield if necessary (in other words, he doesn’t offer anything like the defensive upgrade that Jones does).

I guess I should start painting a BRING JONES UP NOW banner for Sunday’s game.
“Jonesing for Jones” might be more likely to get on TV. Or maybe “Will trade rally fries for promotion of minor league outfielder”

  129. Spadam on July 24th, 2007 4:08 pm

If this game ends soon, will ch. 11 pick up the next game even if it starts before 5:00? There is scheduled to be 30 minutes between games, and ch. 11’s coverage is not supposed to start till 5:00…

  130. kolson82 on July 24th, 2007 4:08 pm

128 – Good call. Anything with rally fries is sure to get on television.

  131. Jake on July 24th, 2007 4:09 pm

Strikeout 1-3? How the hell did that happen?

  132. DAMellen on July 24th, 2007 4:09 pm

It’s not that I disagree, 121. In fact, that name makes perfect sense. The thing is I really don’t blame Morrow for his struggling and as such, I don’t want to give him a mean nickname. I mean really, for a AA pitcher, he’s doing surprisingly well. Maybe we can call Bavasi the Schmeisser Lover. What’s German for lover?

  133. carcinogen on July 24th, 2007 4:09 pm

How’s that football score coming along?

  134. darrylzero on July 24th, 2007 4:09 pm

Wow, I was pretty confused about the rules I guess. I assumed if a ball bounced off the face mask of the umpire, then it would be a foul ball. How was that an out?

  135. eponymous coward on July 24th, 2007 4:10 pm

    Expect a football score.

Yeah, 2-1 sounds about right for a Premier League game.

  136. kenshabby on July 24th, 2007 4:10 pm

This game reminds me of vintage M’s 2004-2006, when mediocre pitchers dominated our lineup with absurd regularity. This is laughable.

  139. darrylzero on July 24th, 2007 4:11 pm

131, they had to throw to 1st, so that’s what they mean. But I guess Lopez actually missed that pitch entirely, to answer my own question, probably. I have the game muted so I can’t hear what they’re saying about it, but it sure didn’t look like he missed it to me. On the other hand, he ran and didn’t complain, so I guess he did.

  147. joser on July 24th, 2007 4:20 pm

Maybe we can call Bavasi the Schmeisser Lover. What’s German for lover?
Well, my colloquial German is pretty spotty. AFAIK there are two ways to say that, -liebhaber or -freund, so it would either be Schmeisserliebhaber or Schmeisserfreund. The former is more exactly the translation, the latter rolls off the tongue more easily (which is certainly not a consideration for German). They both sound a little dirty, which is a plus.

  148. kenshabby on July 24th, 2007 4:20 pm

  150. C. Cheetah on July 24th, 2007 4:21 pm

  151. Jordan of Boise on July 24th, 2007 4:22 pm

You know, as soon as Adrian took 2nd on the passed ball, I knew Richie would K out – anyone can take a walk to advance the tying runner to 2nd, but it takes a real $12million/year mulleted sasquatch to strand that runner in scoring position.

Umpires are part of the field.
But they’re part of the field behind the plate, which is foul territory. I think he just swung and missed.

They actually played the Richie Sexson radio commercial a couple of nights ago, the one where the woman talks about not getting out of her seat until Richie hits a dinger, and then she can go get food and get back to her seat about the time the ball is landing out in the bleachers. And all I could think was that woman was just a skeleton now, long since dead of hunger while waiting for a hit.

  191. Dave Clapper on July 24th, 2007 4:39 pm

In hopes of jinxing it before it happens, during the hot streak, I was suspicious that the M’s were going to reel off a 5-game losing streak any time. Here’s hoping they manage to avoid that.

(If it meant the most obvious move in the history of the franchise finally came to pass, though, I’m not sure it’d be such an awful thing.)

  192. billd on July 24th, 2007 4:40 pm

191 – How much more than 1 win would Jones be worth over 65 games?

  194. Jake on July 24th, 2007 4:42 pm

  196. daveblev on July 24th, 2007 4:43 pm

If they can somehow score, we’ll see the worst defense ever in the bottom of the 9th.

There’s probably been worse. The M’s could have opted to lose the DH, move Ichiro into CF, Lopez to SS, Vidro to 2B, and Raul in LF. That would be really bad, but probably not the worst ever.

  204. C. Cheetah on July 24th, 2007 4:57 pm

  208. Grayfox on July 24th, 2007 5:01 pm

What a horrible game, im really gettin fustrated to the point where im punching things because we squander oportunities that playoff contention teams should never do. U got a runner on third, 1 out and ichiro strikes out? thats how we know things are not going well for us, and until someone higher up in the organization can start a fire under the players asses, were done until someone is on the blocks, or a certain someone is called up, We need a starter and a few more hitters, im not giving up yet, but its gettin real hard to keep my heart in this team at this point, in a crucial season. Bring back mike? he should of never left.

  209. msb on July 24th, 2007 5:03 pm

We need a starter and a few more hitters

  210. joser on July 24th, 2007 5:04 pm

Can I just say I appreciate TV Producer being here giving us useful info about the broadcast (especially since s/he is presumably also busy with an actual job involving the broadcast). I suspect this may be same person who got “Doyle” onto the in-game box score last year, which was one of the memorable highlights of a season far too filled with unmemorable lowlights.

  211. flash_33 on July 24th, 2007 5:07 pm

Son of a b****. WTF is going on with this team? It is so frustrating to have all sorts of hope after the all-star game and now we are F-ing ourselves with all these losses. Sorry but it’s really frustrating.

  212. Grayfox on July 24th, 2007 5:07 pm

So what do we expect out of the 2nd game? more of the same, low hits, double plays, striking out with a man on 3rd?

  213. fetish on July 24th, 2007 5:12 pm

    I expect the M’s score 10, 11 runs.

    The rangers score 0.

  214. fetish on July 24th, 2007 5:12 pm

  215. Jordan of Boise on July 24th, 2007 5:12 pm

Bloomquist needs to adopt Adam Jones.

  216. Jigga8481 on July 24th, 2007 5:14 pm

Pardon me if this has been said but aren’t those the M’s spring training jerseys?

  217. JIMINEDMONDS on July 24th, 2007 5:16 pm

If you like the Mariners’ woes in this road trip, just get ready for the stretch in August-September when they will play 17 out of 20 games on the road. If they aren’t buried by the time the first road trip to Minnesota and Texas is over, then they surely will be in wake mode when the go to Cleveland, Toronto, NYY, and Detroit. Oh, well, it will be football season then.

  218. krb on July 24th, 2007 5:17 pm

I was wondering if we got new road uniforms. They do look like spring training jerseys though.

  219. Glen on July 24th, 2007 5:18 pm

    216 – either way I like them…

  220. msb on July 24th, 2007 5:21 pm

sheesh, who is the leatherlung sitting near the radio crowd mike?

  221. joser on July 24th, 2007 5:21 pm

Well, if the M’s can hang tough they get a ten game streak where they play four home against the Rays sandwiched by home/away 3-game series against Oakland. And September is the time for call-ups and experiments by teams that are out of it (assuming Oakland is indeed out of it). That last stretch against the Angels, Indians (and these Rangers) could be brutal, though.

  222. joser on July 24th, 2007 5:21 pm

  227. Kingfelix34 on July 24th, 2007 5:31 pm

Putting things in perspective….a little…after we failed to score in the top of 8th in the first game I was so frustrated that I had to go for a run instead of stay and watch the 9th….and risk throwing something in anger of us NOT getting the job done again…

I had to run to burn off energy b/c I get that upset when the M’s lose especially this year. I got about as far away from my apt as I could before turning around….a good 2 miles….and a thunderstorm quickly came in (I live in Orlando FL and they pop up like crazy all the time.) It took me about 25 minutes to finally get back, as I am out of shape. But on the way back there were numerous lightining strikes all around me, and seemingly close. TO be honest it scared the living shit out of me running back, and the only reason I was in the place to begin with was b/c the M’s lost and I was real pissed off.

Granted this is just a story I’m sharing for fun, but it does put things in a little perspective…..that baseball is just a game and we are not in control of how the M’s play. I’ll still be living and dying with each pitch tonight but this is just a game…as hard as it is to realize that.

and just as I type this Broussard wastes a great opportunity to get the M’s on the board! Marvelous…

Hi I’m new to this blog so I apologize if I’m repeating something that’s been said earlier. But it seems that the Ms are completely dependent on the clutch hit. Where’s the opportunistic bunt, sac fly, squeeze, or steal when our bats are this silent? We’ve now had 2 shutouts and a 1-run loss in our last 4 games. But it seems McClaren (and for that matter Hargrove before him) are unwilling to play small-ball to scratch out a run here and there. Could have been the difference in splitting the last games instead of going 0-4. Our pitching is generally doing well. I’d much rather watch us attempt a little fun, small ball and fail than continue to await the clutch hit from Sexon or Broussard.

Twice we had a runner get on base to lead off the inning late in that game, and twice McClaren opted not to bunt. Twice we grounded into a DP instead. Pathetic.
