Game 108, Red Sox at Mariners
DMZ · August 4, 2007 at 6:15 pm · Filed Under Game Threads
This should be a good time. Matsuzaka v Washburn? Possibly the best team in baseball against a hot M’s team struggling to put themselves into contention — sign me up.
Daisuke v Jarrod!
Daisuke: 144 IP, 133 H, 15 HR, 50 BB, 142 K
Jarrod: 129.1 IP, 137 H, 10 HR, 42 BB, 69 K
And one of them pitches in Fenway, the other in Safeco.

Let’s hope that Washburn is tonight’s Sabermetric Anti-Hero of the Game.
Nice to know our #2 starter has a 4.8 K/9.
One is making $6.4 Million…the other $9.9 Million!
1 – that;s what i am hoping too. I bet half of the fans in safeco will be rooting for Dice-K, either the bosox fans or the japanese.
3 – lol…who’s making what?
Lets keep this Beantown ownership up
Go Red Sox!
6 – Are you a troll, or just unfunny?
6 – Not funny
Hopefully Jones PH’s or PR’s for Ibanez in the middle of the game.
Meanwhile, they got that kid who dropped from 45 on the X-Games one channel up. Miraculously, he’s already out of the hospital. Is the dude just the luckiest guy on earth, or do they put something in the water in Australia?
Red sox fans are no better than yankee fans, they all walk around like thier S**T dont stink, so get out of our Mariner’s forum.
Nice to see there’s a game thread today so we don’t have guess where we are going to congregate.
Nice to see Sexson on the bench. Hopefully Mac keeps him there until the road trip.
Hey, I like the mariners too, but when my Red Sox are involved they get the upper hand.
1: Explain? I’m new to this blog and not yet well versed in all the goings on here.
9: He took that fall pretty well. It’s still amazing that he didn’t break any bones… But if someoneone lands correctly from a 30,000 foot drop from an airplane onto concrete, they can survive. He’s pretty practiced at landing correctly, I’d assume, being a pro skateboarder and all. =P
were here to talk mariner baseball, not root for boston.
Also, Red Sox Nation is the worst bandwagon ever.
11: What, the free beer offer last night wasn’t worth the brief uncertainty as to where the game thread party ended up being?
ya its like back in high school, all the “cool” kids were smoking, now its all the “cool” kids wear boston stuff.
I don’t get the snobbery. If there are Red Sox fans willing to talk baseball here, who cares??
There is one positive note on Richie’s Batting AVG, that bar down the street on richie night has got to be the place for bums to hang out, what better place to get a cheap beer huh, the lower his avg the more bums are happy.
#15 speaks the truth. When the curse was getting hyped in the early 2000s people starting rooting for them, and then when they beat the Yankees everyone just decided to become Boston fans. They’re worse than the Yankees now. AMERICA’S TEAM BABY!!! Barf.
17: at least the red NY Yankees hats are out of style. I’d rather see people wearing BoSox hats than discolored hats of any team
We’ve already gotten some nice help on the scoreboard today…hopefully the ChiSox hang on too. I’m dying to see the Mariners actually holding down a playoff spot in the standings.
Also, I hate how every announcer says “Dice-K”…the real pronunciation of his name is much cooler.
18 – I totally agree. But I think they should introduce themselves to us as someone who is a Red Sox fan looking to chat with some mariners fans and get a friendly riff going. Not just log on and say Go Red Sox.
20 – Agreed. Drives me up a freaking wall that people see the Red Sox as somehow more noble than the Yankees. They’re not, at all.
Chicago up 7-5 on Detroit going to the bottom of the 9th…
Detroit has absolutly fallen apart lately
24-hmmm friendly chat. How bout this, the M’s are a C+ team at best thats having a lucky year…most likely not friendly enough. No but really, do you diehard M’s fans actually believe you can make the playoffs. In my opinion, the tigers or Indians will get the wild card, and la angels will have the West.
OK, he’s a troll, folks. Kindly ignore for the duration.
No Adam…that’s what I was hoping to see.
Chicago wins!!
Tigers lose! Alright boys, let’s move into the wildcard spot.
Hey, at least he’s a Seahawks fan!!! He probably jumped on that bandwagon in 2005, he was previously a Patriots fan. Wait, he’s probably upset that his team has the worst left fielder in baseball. How many runs does he cost Boston a year, 85?
Yankees Suck! Yankees Suck!
lol, like our left fielder is sooo awesome!!!!!
25 I dunno, I grew up a Mariners fan but always had that image of the Red Sox, and haven’t had any reason to change it. To this day I root for them whenever they’re in the playoffs and the M’s aren’t.
How many runs does he cost Boston a year, 85?
A lot fewer than he adds with his bat. He’s a mess in the field for sure, but he’s still absolutely worth it.
#35 Adam Jones is awesome
23
I had heard his name is pronounced Dice-K. How do you really say it?
If ripping on Manny’s defense is the worst insult you can come up with, then the Red Sox are doing pretty damn well.
Totally depressing that Jones isn’t playing tonight. This organization… sheesh. Even when they’re on the brink of doing something right, they manage to stop themselves in the nick of time.
Anything interesting happen last night at the event, anyone?
Man, Wash has definitely got his “A” game curveball tonight… that thing is nasty coming at you between 70 – 74 MPH.
wow wash-k
39 – it’s actually pretty close, the ‘u’ is basically silent. So D-eye-skay.
Manny’s just a clown in general. Not that we can take anything away from him offensively, but I’m still waiting for us to plunk him for the showboating over the walkoff earlier this year.
Jarrod pisses me off. He’s done this the last couple of times he’s been out. He’ll start out striking out everybody then completely implode in the 4th inning.
Inconsistency, thy name is Washburn.
Teej, even if he’s +60 or 70 with his bat (astounding) he’s also -30 with his glove, leaving us a net +40. 4 wins. Pretty good, but hardly worth what we tend to think he’s worth.
Okay, this is all guesswork from me. Somebody rip into this assertion.
#44 I thought it was pronounced Die-soo-kay? Oh well, if that is how it’s pronounced his name sucks.
Wash is doing well tonight.
wow, nice start to get his pitch count up, were in for a long night.
I like Manny to be honest. I heard a Red Sox fan on Colin Cowherd (spelling?) and he said Manny’s carefree attitude was part of the reason the Red Sox were able to overcome the curse. I know from a sabermetric perspective that is probably hogwash but it made me look at Manny in a different light.
45-I agree, that was low class.
From a sabermetric perspective curses, boogey men and the like don’t really exist.
I wasn’t really trying to dis Manny, I’ve always thought he was a cool player…it was more of a rip on the ‘new Red Sox’…or Red Sox Nation, or whatever you want to call it. His fielding is a source of great amusement for me though.
So, is he just goin to throw fastballs past everyone tonight.
Our announcers crack me up, sometimes.
“… had something that’s a little unique.”
I do not think you know what unique means, sir.
#53
Yeah, gotta admit the whole Red Sox Nation thing is obnoxious.
Congrats, Barry.
*
So, Mariner fans, how’s that Heathcliff Slocumb trade working out for ya?
Wow. I love how when they just showed Bonds tying the record, they decided not to use sound. Weak.
Go Bonds!
Matsuzaka’s windup is so weird.
GO BELTRE!!!
SWUNG ON AND BELTRED!
#52
I can appreciate that perspective but when that ball went under Buckner’s glove that made a believer out of me as far as the curse goes.
ADDDDRRRRRIIIAAAAN!!!
Wow. I almost just spelled the word whether as wether and found out the word wether means: a castrated male sheep.
Congrats, Barry.
So, Mariner fans, how’s that Heathcliff Slocumb trade working out for ya?
Better than Andersen for Bagwell.
I dunno. I guess when someone proves to me that every pitcher Barry took yard was clean, I’ll think he deserves an asterisk. Why he deserves to symbolize steroid use (legal and not against MLB policy at the time) is beyond my comprehension.
There. Now someone can yell “but he cheated!” and feel morally superior to me for turning a blind eye to the destruction of the blah blah blah.
Way to go, Beltre!
Hope you were watching Raul fail in front of him, Mac!
63… its called pressure, some people choke. Curses are for lame fans who don’t want to have to root for their team until they’re good (aka 95% of the red sox nation)
Dave N. just got about a hundred points from me for mentioning the incredible play Beltre got robbed on last week.
Richie would’ve made that play
Well at least Sexson’s on the bench. Not only was he driving the team out of business he was doing it to that poor bar downtown.
Yah, but I think not having a guy that’ll strike out half the time and pop up the rest in the lineup is a good thing.
Vidro … our “Single or nothing” DH. Sigh.
I’ll take a single..
I guess that’s a single then, huh 75?
Nobody’s catching Turbo!
MYYYYYY TUUUUUURRRRRRRBBBOOOOOO LOOOOOOOOVAAAAAHHHH
Yep, just like last night with 2 runners on … a single and NO RBI. I can’t stand our DH – we have to use a real one at some point.
Atleast a single isn’t an out.
Yay for veteran leadership!
/sarcasm
81: You got me there.
This probably has already been mentioned…but…with a win, we take over the wildcard.
A man on 2nd isn’t in scoring position when Vidro is at the plate, and that’s a big problem. Note tonights game and yesterdays game, where he’s loaded the bases instead of scoring a run with his weak singles. 2 runs lost there at least.
I’m so glad Mac is happy with Raul.
47 –
Even if Ibanez is -10 with his bat (pretty bad) he’s also -25 with his glove. -3.5 wins. Pretty bad, and even worse than our FO tends to think he is worth.
Way to waste an appearance of JLo on the basebaths.
Raul owes us some U’s… And some RBIs, for that matter.
er, paths.
Thank god for veteran grit. Imagine if we’d had a rookie up there… could have been so much worse. They might have taken our run away.
The Nickname Has Gone to Hell
A rant on Dice-K’s nickname.
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19620053/site/newsweek/
Umm, why gripe about a Turbo single when neither Guillen or Ibanez produced anything behind him?
#80
My boss told me that Vidro is a good clubhouse presence and has a nice approach at the plate.
Jeepers, this pisses me off. Our starting DH has … a grand total of 18 (EIGHTEEN) extra base hits 2/3rds of the way through the year and a grand total of 35 RBIs. Who, and why, are the people supporting him? He gives us so much less than we have a legitimate right to expect … at a cost of $8 million. You Turbo Lovers – show me anything that justifies him being a part of this lineup – use primary, secondary, tertiary or made up stats to convince me.
Anyone notice that Rauuuul is O-fer Boston this year? 0-12 with 2 BB…0-5 vs. DiceK.
Mmmm…Ibañez or Jones? Ibañez or Jones???
In the immortal words of Ron Fairly: Tough call there!
As much as we harp on Ibanez, that was PAINFUL to watch…
93 – Why are they mutually exclusive?
96-timely comment, all things considered.
Washburn has to keep the ball down low.
Okay, after that last double that should’ve been an out, how can it not be obvious to -anyone- that Raul has no business in LF?
That undervalued defense just reared its ugly head, too. That definitely cost at least second base.
Fishiam, get with the times. The hate is on Ibanez now.
Now I understand that Ibanez sucks, and it would be nice for him to get a hit with two outs and runners in scoring position every once in a while, Guillen’s AB was worse, all he had to do was hit a flyball to any of the weak arms in the boston outfield and a run would’ve scored
Richie is sharing some of the hate though..
#95
I can’t give you any of that because I have a Stockholm Syndrome like loyalty to Vidro.
Washburn’s losin’ it!!!
103: Maybe it ought to start focusing its laser-like attention on one Jose Lopez, cause that guy has some serious OPS issues lately as well (And just how do the M’s keep wining with all these holes in their order?!)
104 – No doubt about that. For me, though, it’s the collective veteran grit displayed by our 2,3 and 4 hitters there.
I love winning, don’t mind losing, love clutch hits, don’t mind clutch failure… but I hate, hate, hate not putting the team in the best position to win.
So I don’t really blame any of them for failing there, I just blame management for not fielding the best team we can.
109- I would say that at bat is just another example of the flawed argument the front office uses about the advantages of veterans, a strikeout there is a rookie mistake, a veteran should know you have to put the ball in play at all costs
TEK!!!!!!1
Does that give Raul a negative OPS?
Manny is out by a mile if Betancourt makes any kind of a throw.
112-not that play, but others.
How the heck does Manny freaking Ramirez score from first?
Unbelievable!!
He was running on the 3-2 pitch. Still a slow LF + a lousy throw by Yuni = Manny scoring from first.
110 – Agreed. If Jones “the rookie” had done that, we would be hearing about it, for sure.
I realize that freedom of expression is as American as apple pie but are there any other subjects besides Vidro and Ibanez on this blog? Not that I disagree with the sentiment but enough already.
I am watching the Giants game on my TV and the Mariners game on my computer…why is Dane Cook doing MLB commercials?
This game is far from over guys, until they win one, the Sox have a mental block in Safeco, there waiting to lose this game somehow
Ben>lint>Sexson
Cuz Dane Cook will do anything for a buck.
I think Ben would have been able to get to third there if he was running right out of the box…Manny was jogging to that ball.
118. Sexson.
The fricking ballgirl just cancelled out her nice play by giving the ball to a kid decked head-to-toe in Red Sox gear. Is there a ball girl kangaroo court?
Sorry 123 , Ichiro wouldnt have gotten to third on that, you dont hit too many triples to left field
I THOUGHT THE EXACT SAME THING 125!! GOOD CALL
First Vidro then Kenji, amazing.
That should be the law. No free balls to traitors.
123: No way. Running is a relative term when talking about Broussard.
108 – That’s a very good question. It defies all logic that the Mariners are where they are now, ahead of Detroit (let me repeat that: DETROIT, probably one of the 3 best teams in baseball right now)when we are not fielding a very good team at all right now.
Sabermetrics tells us that the Mariners are, in fact, a worse team than Oakland, and should have a worse record then they do. Yet we’ve been kicking their ass this year. Is it because of team chemistry? I don’t think so, we’ve just been fortunate that our poor stats haven’t managed to cost us as many games as they should have, and that will stop happening eventually, so we should take the steps we can to increase our winning potential.
Also, Washburn is crumbling in the 4th AGAIN, is anyone surprised? But that’s our #2 starter for you.
No Double Play, No Double Play, No Double Play, No Double Play, No Double Play, No Double Play…
DAMN IT!
Who couldn’t see *that* coming?
I went to a Red Sox – Mariners game at Safeco once and there were no Mariners fans at the game.
CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!
Most difficult Mariners to watch at bat:
Sexson
You might be right 131, I guess you have to look at the fact that we might have the best bullpen in baseball, and our offense, while full of holes, is very timely.
Good going, Seb!!!
131 — Washburn should have been facing Ramirez with two out and no one on. Instead, it was Ortiz on second and one out, and obvious pitch-around Manny-situation. His “crumbling” could have entirely been avoided by competent outfield defense.
Hmmm, my post got cut for some reason (involving “
Yeah Sexson is flailing away at the ball like Jeffrey Leonard when he was a Mariner. Yikes.
137. Lopez right now. Richie is very easy to watch on the bench when the camera shows him. Lopez causes me to look away.
The only time “little jose lopez” doesn’t hit an infield pop up is when there is a possibility to GIDP. This team is sooo frustrating…
Well Mac, if you were to do the suicide squeeze with
Jose with only 1 out this would have been the time.
Surprise is the key double play is what happened.
108 – The serious answer to your question re: Lopez, is that there isn’t a readily available alternative to Lopez.
For my part, talking about underforming players is only really interesting in the context of what the team should be doing differently.
Raul’s defense and hitting is ten times as frustrating because we have Adam Jones right there. There is no real easy fix to Lopez that I’m aware of.
Same reason why I almost never complain about the starting pitching… not a lot to do about that this trading deadline, and won’t be until the off season. (The exception being discussing previous baffling moves, I’ll do that time to time.)
Wow, this site does not like “less than” character. Anyhoo, what I’ve been trying to say is that the most difficult M’s to watch at bat are
1. Sexson
2. Lopez
3. Ibanez
4. Vidro
Rare is the good outcome.
Jose can’t bunt.
My boss told me that Lopez doesn’t square around on suicide squeeze bunts very well.
144, is that what you were saying last year when Jose was an all-star? he’s just going through a rough stretch, besides, instead of saying what a horrible player he is, why dont you suggest what you think the M’s should do about it? There is not a better option right now for second base, he’s a good player.
If the two bozos in the press box have noticed that Richie isn’t hitting too well, we’re making progress. “I’m sure that Mac is going to get Richie back in there as soon as he learns how to hit the baseball. . . ”
Maybe Richie could hang out in Tacoma for awhile.
140- Yea it’s mostly Raul’s fault, but Washburn is putting way too many balls in the air, and that’s going to happen eventually, or they’re just going to hit it out of the park.
Unfortunately there’s Ibanez in LF to make sure those all land in the right places. Right places being anywhere more than 20 feet from him.
Ground balls Washburn….ground balls.
147-
LJL jumped to the top of my list after the failed bunt attempt with the squeeze on the other night. I have to admit I friggin lost it
I am not frustrated with this team at all. I am still amazed that they have a fighting chance here in the beginning of August.
146- we could always play Bloomquist at second everyday…(only half joking)
If someone had told me before the season started that Felix would miss a month and only have 7 wins by August, Weaver and Ramirez over 6.00+ ERAs, and Sexson hitting below the Mendoza line I would have predicted a disastrous season.
I know he can’t bunt well but if Mac was going to do it with 5 infielders and every one was looking for it at least in this situation it had the element of surprise. Execution that is some thing else.
Exactly 156…
That’s what makes this such an amazing and frustrating (at times) season. Can you imagine the damage we could be doing if Richie and Co. started hitting?
153 – More upset with Mac about that than Lopez, myself.
155 – Well, that’s one way to learn how to appreciate Jose again.
That’s what makes this such an amazing and frustrating (at times) season. Can you imagine the damage we could be doing if Richie and Co. started hitting?
And also we played our best players on a regular basis?
158… it is especially hard because for his career, Sexson hits best in the 2nd half, I believe especially August. But I don’t see him breaking out of his slump this year. It’s hard to watch.
Hopefully Richie keeps things in perspective. No matter how much he gets booed and jeered he is still walking home with 11 million dollars in his pockets this year!
11? I thought it was 15 million
There’s the replay of the Bonds HR 755. You know the biggest indictment of that guy? That I couldn’t care less that I missed it when it happened.
#163
oops, make that 15 million if you say so. I don’t know I was just guessing.
162 – I think Richie would give a lot of that back if he could lose the Cirillosis.
Atta boy Jose!!
Come on Guillen, show us what a gritty, proven, veteran can do.
Richie is going to go hunting and fishing with Ryan Leaf this offseason.
how’s this for karma, since guillen mouthed off about adam jones . . . 4 strikeouts, and has hit into 2 double plays
Does anyone know for sure if Turbo has changed his plate discipline? When he was the king of GIDP, did he grab his balls before every pitch? It seems to be working for him now.
I remember when Aaron was chasing Ruth’s record. It was the biggest story in the country for weeks leading up to it and everyone was talking about it. I don’t know anyone now who gives a damn about Bonds breaking the record.
Here’s a question (perhaps covered previously): since Guillen is wearing #6, which numbers does that make as unofficially retired for the M’s? As best I can figure, it’s 11, 14, 19, and 24. Any others?
Those gritty, veteran strikeouts are good for chemistry.
They had to take down the Fox Box for a pitch. It was beautiful.
I cared, and was happy I got a chance to witness it the record being tied.
Unlike that strikeout.
Guillen’s not exactly walking the veteran walk out there tonight. Fortunately, he’s family.
Has Guillen even put the ball in play yet since whining about Jones being brought up?
#173… what about the Big Unit/Ichiro combo of 51? I know Ichiro! is still playing, but if he wasn’t, wouldn’t Randy’s 51 be on that list?
Sims always seems more excited when the opposing pitcher makes a great play. “Shut. Him. Down!”
I have to admit, I don’t mind baseball color guys who are unabashedly partisan.
Here’s a suggestion: Have AJ pinch hit for Guillen the next time around the lineup – let Guillen be grateful to AJ for saving him from wearing the golden sombrero.
Yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooukilis
Here’s a suggestion: Have AJ pinch hit for Guillen the next time around the lineup – let Guillen be grateful to AJ for saving him from wearing the golden sombrero.
Fan, meet shit. Shit, the fan.
183 – Nice of Sims to mention that since he plays for our team. Or not.
That was a great fricking play until he didn’t just lob it into second. What was that?
Not Guillen’s best game…
I am mad that our fans are cheering
add another k and an error to the karma ticker for guillen
Put Jones in the corner. Either corner. Doesn’t matter.
Mac’s a sadist. Getting painful. Can’t believe Wash is still in.
190… with a little dunce cap on his head?
184: your potty mouth obscures any sense you might have which appears to be exceedingly vanishing.
188: I’m guessing the sellout has alot to do with Boston being in town….
Seriously, does Raul not wear cleats? He always looks like he’s slipping. Or rollerskating.
191 – He’s surely decided to put off the bullpen as long as possible after last night’s game. I can’t say I blame him, actually.
Every game Jones doesn’t start is an embarrassing indictment of management.
This season is a rare, rare opportunity. If they squander it by being stupid, they all deserve to lose their jobs.
How much clearer can it be that Jones should be in that outfield?
193-Easy there, I was pointing out that the shit would hit the fan. Not talking about you.
Wake up offense.
#197
I am now convinced that the State of Washington is becoming an extension of California so whether the Mariners win or lose I think they are going to be a real money maker for a long time.
Watching Ibanez in left field is painful. He has to be the only person in MLB who makes Manny look good in left field.
I concede to a level of ambiguity watching these games. I want the M’s to succeed, but at the same time, every game they win is plus for the Yankees.
It’s not over yet. Maybe they’ll put Timlin in.
Well I guess Mac is just going to give up this game so he can rest the bullpen for tomorrow, otherwise he would’ve taken Washburn out. HoRam gave them quite a workout yesterday.
I pitch my bullpen everyday in MVP Baseball 2005 for the Xbox. First sign of trouble after 5 and that’s it.
198: ok, peace out. The statement just looked mighty odd from this perspective.
Only way hes gonna get on..
Hitting Ibanez = big mistake
Appealing your own checked swings is the fifth level of goofy
#208
Gotta admit THAT was funny.
Here’s our last chance to get in this game, lets go Ben!!
Big Bennie!
Ben, lookin like Richie
Son of a #@$^#&
Big Ben: “Hey Guys! Look at me! I’m Richie Sexson!”
Ugh.
Why do I keep hoping to see Pineiro down there when they show the Bosox bullpen and who’s warming up?
That base at first must be cursed….
Maybe Kenji’ll crush another one…nope.
Piniero got the start for st. louis today
First base has become what third was a few years ago.
We’re relly missing a lot of opportunities here.
@##@#@#$#$#$@
That was looking like some Little League-quality strike zone judgement, there.
I swear, the same inning is happening over and over again.
208,
Lets get this straight, Adrian Beltre has never appealed to the first base ump on a checked swing call. Neither has any catcher. The plate ump is the only one that can make an appeal. Think of it this way, is the base ump going to overrule the ump behind the plate because a player asks him to?
Let’s go Rally Fry Magic!
+2 power +3 speed plz k thx.
So we’re now 1-7 with runners on base. Neat.
I blame Vidro. Well…and Guillen….and Lopez….well okay it’s probably a combination of all three.
Ace, that’s kinda the whole reason it’s funny. Relax.
Looks like the Red Sox are going to break their Safeco Field curse tonight.
How are there so many Red Sox fans at the safe???
Teej, exactly.
But I’ve seen many a commentor rag on Beltre, thinking that somehow he’s going to get a himself an extra strike for his faux appeal.
229:
Because they bought tickets.
229 – There’s Red Sox fans everywhere. Sort of like there’s Yankees fans everywhere.
I’ve seen many commentator say Wow, that is goofy that Beltre tries to appeal his own check swings or something like that.
Ace, I hear you.
224: It was a humorous aside. But thanks for the buzzkill.
Because a ton of people who live nowhere near Boston and have never been to a Boston home game are poser Red Sox fans. They suck.
Rowland-Smith looked excellent by the way.
232 – Whoa whoa whoa what’s with the profanity? We don’t say the Y-word here.
U-Knee!
YUNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
235:
My pleasure.
Yuni blast!
Yunibomber getting it done.
Damn whats gotten into Yuni? I like it.
Anybody know how many pitches Dies-K has thrown?
Comrade Yuniesky!
Oh dear: Betancourt’s string of 6 straight go-ahead homers has come to an end!
YUUUUUNNNNIIIIII!!!!
Anybody know how many pitches Dies-K has thrown?
99
This is the worst strike zone I’ve seen in a long time. Wth was that?
Well, to be both positive and balanced … the easiest Mariners to watch bat these days
1. Beltre
2. Ichiro
3. Betancourt
4. Broussard
At least, that’s my list.
It seemed like to me that Wash was getting squeezed, yet Dice-K is getting everything under the sun called.
#250
The ump is a member of the Red Sox Nation.
Sombrero!
Lack of team chemistry has clearly disrupted Guillen’s inner zen.
Sims drops a Golden Sombrero on Guillen. Ouch.
And as warned … the golden sombrero … Jose, you shoulda called upon your rookie call up …
237 – Heh, my bad. Should we refer to them as the Team-That-Must-Not-Be-Named, ala Harry Potter?
Love that Sims actually pointed out the Golden Sombrero.
Yep, probably the worst game of Guillen’s career.
“I hope he understands that this isn’t AAA.”
253: sounds like an Ichiro quote
Sweet bender there by RR-S.
How do we keep coming up with good young arms in the bullpen? And why don’t we have any in the starting rotation outside of Felix?
Here’s Ibanez’s chance to spark a rally … Right? I’m trying to muster up every positive vibe I have.
Gagne. Yikes.
Is their another lefty clean-up hitter in the league that doesn’t warrant a lefty specialist in the 8th inning of a 2 run game?
Gagne vs Ibanez in the 8th just isn’t even fair.
That was a veteran leader-like strikeout.
259 – Well if he’s watching Guillen tonight he might get confused and think it’s AA.
Any idea why Jones didn’t PH for Ibanez right there?
I think our only chance of seeing a PH appearance would have been against a lefty. That’s probably why they didn’t bring in a lefty. They’re scared of Jones.
269- Mac.
Did they say that Jones is starting in CF tomorrow with Ichiro DH’ing?
Or it could just be Mac.
272 – That is indeed what Baker says.
269 – You have to save somebody in case the game goes extra innings.
Sweet. Let’s see Kenji get a first pitch FB.
Nice Broussard base hit, further proving he should be the starting at first base.
274: Ah, good. I thought I heard that. I’ll be at the game tomorrow.
Nice adjustment to the always-nasty Gagne change-up.
Kenji’s gotta jack this or we’re done methinks.
270:
That could be, but its more likely because they aren’t scared of Raul.
280 – Not neccessarily, Papelbon could still blow it.
I suspect if Johjima gets on Jones will hit for Lopez
Kenji!
Yes!
WOOO GOOD OL’ KENJI.
Now let’s see some Jones please.
YO JOH!!!
Joh jacked it aiight, just not far enough for a HR. I’ll take it though.
KENJI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YA TA!!!!!!!
283 – Oh how I wish you were right.
Sweet!
God bless you Manny Ramirez and your atrocious defense.
2-OUT RALLY BIACTH!!!!
LOPEZ! Yuni time!
Just kidding. I knew Lopez was going to get a hit.
… finally.
I was about to bust on Lopez, so I should give some MAD PROPS for that one.
DAMN!!! Bloomie could’ve scored!!!!
Do they walk Yuni here to get to Ichiro? Unlikely.
And up comes the Yunibomber! If the Red Sox lose this game they may need therapy to get over Safeco syndrome.
I’m not watching the game, watching it on gamecast, exactly why didn’t Willie score? Shouldn’t he have been running on contact?
298-Good one.
Heh heh…Bucky.
Crud. Guillen gets a shot at redemption in the 9th, though.
Dang. Well at least now we’re within one run.
Ben Broussard, the new Ignitor? Gritty single and stolen base!
Wasn’t the whole point of bringing in a pinch runner such that he should score on, you know, a frikkin’ double!?
WFB for the loss.
Bucky Jacobson.. is he still playing?
What’s up with those commercials? Does anybody even know who Bucky Jacobsen is anymore?
300 Doesn’t matter if Willie was running on contact. Manny played the ball off the wall perfectly as he did against the Johjima single as well.
Does Guillen get to hit or will he be pinch hit for?
I couldn’t tell from the camera angle if Willie had a legit shot at home.
Not all doubles are created equal. A good throw would have gotten Bloomie by a mile.
My question is, why was Bloomquist pinch running if Jones wasn’t going to be used as the hitter there? Isn’t Jones faster? Hopefully Mac is saving him to pinch hit for the Guillen and his big sombrero.
Yea, we got Ichiro, Vidro and Guillen coming up, we could get a rally started. Atleast getting Ichiro on base, then him stealing 2nd, then being bunted to third, and then base hit to drive ichiro home to tie the game.
It looked like Willie could’ve had a chance to score, but it would’ve been a close play at the plate. A gamble worth taking, I would think.
Plus the ball hit off Lopez was a screamer. Tough break on Johjima single, a little more air and that would have been a 2 run funk blast.
Has there been a hit to right field against us in the past 10 games? It doesn’t seem like it.
316-
Didn’t Guillen have a throwing error tonight on a ball hit to right?
316 – How about the one Guillen sent into the stands earlier after taking it on a short hop?
Willie didn’t have a chance. I do not think it would have been close unless Bloomie was planning on steamrolling Varitek. Advantage Varitek.
319-Still, I might want to see that.
306 – Bucky played nine games in the Mexican League, but that’s all BA has on him.
316 – There *was* that one where Guillen airmailed the throw in for the Sox’ third run.
309:
I think Guillen would go nuclear, let’s recap his night if that were to happen:
Phase 1: 4 Ks
Phase 2: Dice-K plunks two Ms, no Sox have yet been plunked.
Phase 3: Adam Jones pinch-hits for Guillen and hits the walk-off 672 feet.
Phase 4: Hostage situation in the clubhouse after the game. A pregnant Angie Mentik negotiates a successful release.
320 Yeah if you want to see Bloomie take a trip to the DL. Varitek is a pretty big guy last time I checked.
The M’s have been scoring off of the top closers lately, i.e. K-Rod, Street and Gagne. There’s a chance in the bottom of the 9th if they keep it within 1.
Jose Guillen has a chance to tie a very dubious record …the platinum sombrero (5 strikeouts) in a nine inning game.. You’re the manager … do you let him bat?
Morrow better be starting next year. No ifs, ands or buts about it!
A buddy of mine played against Bucky in a softball game this summer. He’s still hoping to come back from injuries but I think he’s done.
Morrow V2.0 looking good again!
Morrow throwing the heat!
Bullpen is practically lights out tonight. Now the offense needs to make it worthwhile.
Fishiam, who else are you gonna have bat, AJ? It would be him or Richie, and I think we know the latter won’t get in.
323-Everything you say is true. And yet….
I just hope they keep a camera trained on the dugout if Guillen gets pulled for AJ. ESPN might have to do a mini-series called “Sodo is Burning” shortly.
Bucky was THE biggest a-hole back in the day. I played against him in Legon ball. He was about 80 lbs. lighter too. Maybe the juice didn’t treat him as well as he hoped.
Cut the crap Ichiro just tie it here. You’re due a HR anyways.
Does anyone else think that Pappelbon looks like Private Pyle from ‘Full Metal Jacket’?
Ouch.
Any else imagine Guillen pulling a George Brett Pine Tar Incident if he gets pulled for AJ?
I had a feeling Ichiro was going K after he took the second strike.
Since when does Vidro swing @ the first pitch?
Cmon Vidro we need a home run!
Made myself laugh with that one.
336-Yeah, I can see that. A bit skinnier, though.
Guillen vs. Papelbon. I don’t like our chances.
OK Jose, time to put your money where your mouth is.
Wow, that was surprising … our singles hitting monster of a DH … strikes out.
Papelbon is filthy tonight.
341-
heh you aren’t the only one. How does a guy with absolutely no power this year get to keep his job as DH? Does he have incriminating photos of Bavasi somewhere?
Guillen can redeem himself right here.
Is there anything worse than the golden sombrero? Stay tuned, Guillen is about to find out.
Sims just called Guillen ‘Jose Vidro’.
DEREK KINZLER!!!!!
Guillen looks like Sexson with that last swing. Wasn’t even close.
There ya go Guillen, just dont swing.
If Guillen somehow manages to walk you’d have to PH Jones for Ibanez, right?
atta boy!!!!
That’s the best we could have hoped for.
Nope, Jones PR for Gullien
ADAM JONES?!?!?!
AFTER THE AT BAT?!?!?
Glad to see AJ, but he should be hitting, not running.
Raul……..I wish I had hope for this encounter.
@353
Nope, he will run for Guillen.
No, you use him in Guillens place if your Mac.
Apparently you let AJ run. Why take the bat out of the hands of a veteran leader? /snark
Well, Jones is in the game, just not where he needs to be
Well, AJ is in… now let’s go Raul!!!!
OMG Ibanez
OK Raul, prove that you still deserve a starting job.
Way to go AJ…but you should be batting right now.
Why the FUCK is AJ running for Guillen instead of PHing for hopeless Ibanez?
Man. He fast.
Wow, that was anticlimactic.
Because there’s no way a manager is going to use a rookie as a PH in this spot against one of the best closers in the league.
Damn. Nice fight though..
And… defeat clinched from the jaws of victory.
Aw man… at least we made them work for the win and we didn’t go down easy. Better luck tomorrow.
“DEREK KINZLER!!!!!”
ARE YOU SURE????
Beltre should have really tried to work the count in his favor instead of swinging on the first pitch The guy just walked 2 batters in a row.
Seriously? First pitch swinging? Ugh.
372:
Lots of reasons, 1) wouldn’t be fair to put Jones up against Paplebon a day after he was called up, 2) righty-lefty matchup, 3) why rub Jones in face of the veterans, he’s going to be taking enough of their AB’s as it is.
Who the hell cares what the veterans think? If they can’t perform they shouldn’t be playing, period.
322 I just read your comment. Thanks for the laugh.
Guillen in this series so far, 0 for 8, 6 K’s, 0 RBI’s, 2 GIDP, 1 error. I guess Adam Jones did disrupt the team chemistry afterall!
That was a much MUCH better game than I feared it would be. The top of the order murdered us today. Nobody could predict an 0-4 day by Ichiro, but is there any damn reason why Beltre and Broussard are betting 5,6 and Ibanez and Guillen are hitting 3,4? Switch those two pairs around just based on their performance…we win the game.
Or Ichiro could have gotten just one hit!!
We best not have to wait until Burres to see Felix pitch again.
Jones is going to start tomorrow in CF. Ichiro will DH. Ibanez will unfortunately be playing left field where undoubtedly Boston will pummel him as they did tonight and as every team has done every night for the entire season.
McLaren, you’ve been here a month, you have earned the credibility with the players, so fix it. Jones to left, Ibanez/Vidro platooned at DH. DO IT!
I don’t get the notion of platooning Ibanez and Vidro at DH. Their OPS is almost identical vs. RHP. Vidro has no platoon split, so either fire him or let him play every day.
Why not platoon Ibanez and Guillen in RF? Both of these players show very significant platoon splits and Ibanez’ defense wouldn’t present a massive downgrade from Guillen’s in RF.
Or shove both of ‘em out the door and call up Balantien!
