    And Vidro at 1B

  2. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 12:43 pm

Wooo! The King should be able to smite this lineup.

  3. Lauren, token chick on September 19th, 2007 1:00 pm

    Well, Detroit lost….

    *waving faint flag of hope*

  4. CCW on September 19th, 2007 1:00 pm

Man, I called the Vidro to 1B move in DMZ’s tea leaves post yesterday. Vidro/Ibanez are next year’s primary 1B/DH combo. I realize that means something needs to be done with Sexson, but if there’s one thing we’ve seen, it’s that Bavasi is not afraid to cut bait on cooked veterans and eat the last year of the contract (Boone, Olerud, etc.).

  5. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:03 pm

oops! I thought it was at 1:00!

    aaaaand here comes Mark Ellis….

  6. Rusty on September 19th, 2007 1:05 pm

Whew! 1 inning down, 8 to go. Go King Felix!

  7. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:08 pm

#4– hasn’t Vidro pretty much split between 1st & 2nd when allowed in the field this year?

  8. kenshabby on September 19th, 2007 1:11 pm

3 – Detroit lost, but the Yankees shall not lose again, it seems.

  9. Joe on September 19th, 2007 1:16 pm

Wow, so this is what it feels like when the other team has a pitcher who can’t get anybody out in the early innnigs…

Meanwhile, Rizzs talking up Jones, calling him a “thoroughbred” and comparing him to Cameron: “they’ll have to find a place for him next year.”

  10. Joe on September 19th, 2007 1:17 pm

The way the AL East is going, it’s going to be the Tigers and the Red Sox fighting it out for the wildcard….

  11. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:19 pm

boy if you are just checking in and out, you sure get some nice surprises…

  12. brian_sun on September 19th, 2007 1:22 pm

#9. I am at work and can’t listen to the radio. Is Rick Rizz comparing Jones to Cameron Maybin? That’s a pretty good comparison.

  13. dcmarinerfan on September 19th, 2007 1:25 pm

Just FYI – Magglio today was 0-4 dropping his average to .353. Ichiro needs to go 2-3 in his next three at bats to take over the batting lead.

  14. Joe on September 19th, 2007 1:26 pm

Well, it would be, but I’m pretty sure he was referring to Mike, as in the former M’s (and current Padres) outfielder.

  15. Joe on September 19th, 2007 1:27 pm

Did Rizzs just refer to the Dow (as in the stock index)?

  16. huhwhat on September 19th, 2007 1:30 pm

That throw looked like it bounced of Vidro’s leg too me at least.

  17. timc on September 19th, 2007 1:33 pm

So what kind of Felix are we getting? Good, bad, wild, unlucky?

  18. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:35 pm

    look at that Lopey.

well, look as a figure of speech.

  19. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 1:50 pm

    Oh, Adam…c’mon.

  20. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:51 pm

anyone have the tv view? how bad is the sun?

  21. jlc on September 19th, 2007 1:52 pm

Before the game started, Blowers commented that it might be an “interesting day” because of the sun.

  22. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 1:53 pm

i’ve only got the radio. he should have $500 sunglasses on though if he doesn’t already. they make some really sweet polarized ones for riding motorcycles that are great going in and out of shadows.

  23. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:53 pm

so, sun compounded by whirly wind? fun.

well, Adam just needs to get that run back.

  24. msb on September 19th, 2007 1:54 pm

#22– he was wearing his glasses. apparently they didn’t help.

  25. vj on September 19th, 2007 1:55 pm

The sun looked pretty bad on mlb.tv. and he has his shades on.

  26. aaronsawyer1 on September 19th, 2007 1:55 pm

seems like they’re sitting on the fastball

  27. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 1:57 pm

i don’t care so much about the run as Mac sitting there going, ‘a veteran knows how to battle the sun…’ or some s***.

  28. scott19 on September 19th, 2007 2:00 pm

    8: Wha’cha expect…they’re playing the juggernaut O’s, after all! :|

  29. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:04 pm

anyone else stoked to go to a double-header next week?

  30. scott19 on September 19th, 2007 2:10 pm

Neihaus just mentioned that “the afternoon games draw pretty well here in Oakland.”

Well, certainly better than they do in Miami these days! :o

  31. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:12 pm

did they just play the theme from ‘empire strikes back’ for shannon stewart? buhner OWNS that.

  32. _David_ on September 19th, 2007 2:14 pm

84 pitches through 4 against this lineup?

  33. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:15 pm

nice patience, lopez. and thank you uncle dave.

  34. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:15 pm

nice patience, lopez. and thank you uncle dave.

  35. msb on September 19th, 2007 2:15 pm

and as Niehaus points out, they might want to make Meyer work a little here

  36. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:19 pm

    …and Meyer’s work is done.

  37. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:25 pm

normally i’d say this inning would be it for Felix, but the last few times he’s gotten sent back out there after getting over 100 it seems.

  38. msb on September 19th, 2007 2:32 pm

so, is it just that Felix can’t control the breaking pitches today?

  39. _David_ on September 19th, 2007 2:33 pm

Felix might’ve gotten hosed on that last pitch.

  40. Joe on September 19th, 2007 2:34 pm

107 pitches and they’re only now getting people up in the bullpen? We know the A’s are a patient team; that’s not going to change in this inning. Not looking a move ahead is the curse of this team from top to bottom.

  41. _David_ on September 19th, 2007 2:34 pm

I mean the one where he walked Hannahan

  42. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:34 pm

Re: # 38 is anyone watching that can tell us that?

  43. _David_ on September 19th, 2007 2:36 pm

    38: yeah, pretty much

  44. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:41 pm

i was just looking at Adam’s splits in AAA this year. wow, that’s consistent.

  45. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:42 pm

is Burke gonna be back next year?

  46. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:43 pm

shannon throws like a…i won’t say it. my wife would kill me. and she can throw pretty hard.

  47. msb on September 19th, 2007 2:43 pm

and Carlos Garcias ducks that bullet

  48. jlc on September 19th, 2007 2:44 pm

45 – I asked Dave that before and he says yes.

  49. G-Man on September 19th, 2007 2:45 pm

2 outs, Stewart is mediocre, I was for the risk of sending Burke … .until I realized that Ichiro was next up.

  50. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:46 pm

48 – sweeeet. Clement and Johnson have gotta be a year away each.

  51. Joe on September 19th, 2007 2:48 pm

Clement certainly hasn’t been doing anything to break down the door, and I guess Johnson still needs some seasoning. Even when they’re hitting, minor leauge catchers still have plenty of learning to do wrt managing a pitching staff. Burke has done everything they’ve asked of him, and until there’s somebody in Tacoma who is obviously ready I’d expect the M’s to keep him. I don’t know that he’ll end 2008 as the designated backup catcher, however.

  52. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 2:52 pm

Joe – I agree. Clement hit fairly well in pitcher’s enviroment this year, but apparently his defence needs some work still (i havn’t seen him play this year however). I almost get the feeling Johnson turns into a below-average hitter/good catcher while Clement is his alter-ego or something.

  53. The Ghost of Spike Owen on September 19th, 2007 2:56 pm

I’m following this on GameCast at the office. Why did they take Felix out before the 6th? Please tell me he’s not injured.

  54. The Ghost of Spike Owen on September 19th, 2007 2:57 pm

Oh, he was at 107? Nevermind.

  55. Joe on September 19th, 2007 2:58 pm

Felix was over 110 pitches, I believe.

  56. msb on September 19th, 2007 2:58 pm

at 107 with little command, it appears.

  57. Joe on September 19th, 2007 3:00 pm

110 pitches, 64 for strikes. That’s not bad but by the standards of Good Felix it certainly is.

  58. Sports on a Schtick on September 19th, 2007 3:02 pm

Against this lineup? I would say it’s bad.

  59. msb on September 19th, 2007 3:03 pm

and where is Grady from, Rizzy?

  60. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 3:03 pm

Question: Are the Mets the new Mariners?

  61. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 3:05 pm

rizz says, ‘putting the game in motion’ and ‘trying to make something happen’. i say ‘run yourself out of an inning’.

  62. jlc on September 19th, 2007 3:06 pm

I’d say the Mets were the new Red Sox, but the Red Sox are still the Red Sox, it seems.

  63. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 3:06 pm

    woot! nice hustle, adam!

  64. Joe on September 19th, 2007 3:08 pm

Memo to Scutaro: Jones is kind of fast.

Bases loaded. What a great opportunity for Burke to get his first major leauge HR.

  65. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 3:12 pm

A walk’s as good as a hit. Except that most hits would have scored at least 2. Uh, never mind.

  66. Ralph Malph on September 19th, 2007 3:12 pm

    Terrific at bat by Burke.

  67. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 3:13 pm

    10 pitch RBI walk! WOOO

  68. Ralph Malph on September 19th, 2007 3:13 pm

A walk is better than a hit because Garcia would have sent Vidro and he’d be out at the plate.

  69. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 3:13 pm

    Sorry, 11 pitch

  70. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 3:15 pm

Followed up by a typical impatient 1-pitch
wild swing pop up by Yuni. Ah, Yuni, will ye
    never change.

  71. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 3:16 pm

Yuni… not so good at taking pitches.

  72. Wood Dog on September 19th, 2007 3:28 pm

Does 51 have the batting lead yet?

  73. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 3:32 pm

4 walks and 9 hits in 5 innings for Felix? Owch…

  74. JI on September 19th, 2007 3:35 pm

Blowers expresses doubt on whether or not Jones will play next year.

What do we read into that?

  75. Tom C on September 19th, 2007 3:37 pm

#72 Wood Dog- Not yet by a fraction but he may before the night is over.

  76. msb on September 19th, 2007 3:43 pm

and RRS had to come out of the game because why?

  77. Karen on September 19th, 2007 3:44 pm

Yeah, #51 and Ordonez are tied at .353 right now (I didn’t work it out to 4,5,6 digits). Ordonez was 0-for-4 in the earlier game.

  78. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 3:44 pm

Our pitchers always seem to find it difficult to throw the ball near the strike zone.

  79. maalox on September 19th, 2007 3:46 pm

so far a very nice outing for huber

  80. scott19 on September 19th, 2007 3:48 pm

76: Because Mac is a masochist.

  81. Karen on September 19th, 2007 3:51 pm

I see Sean Green is getting another Rick White moment.

WHY isn’t JJ Putz available? I didn’t hear what Dave N. said just a few minutes ago, but he repeated several times that JJ wasn’t available in the 4-0 game a few days ago, and he wasn’t available yesterday, and he isn’t today.

    What’s up?

  82. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 3:54 pm

    tightness in his right triceps
    they say nothing serious

  83. jlc on September 19th, 2007 3:54 pm

81 – J.J. has a tight right triceps. Third day today.

  84. aaronsawyer1 on September 19th, 2007 3:55 pm

    George!

  85. msb on September 19th, 2007 3:55 pm
  86. kenshabby on September 19th, 2007 3:58 pm

    Yay! Nine walks and counting.

  87. pumpkinhead on September 19th, 2007 3:59 pm

Woo. Have a seat Mr. Bases-loaded strikeout guy.

  88. aaronsawyer1 on September 19th, 2007 3:59 pm

    Thank you!

  89. scott19 on September 19th, 2007 4:00 pm

81: Maybe Mac’s “saving” him for the impending Weekend-O’-Fun in Anaheim…as if it’s gonna freaking matter! >:(

  90. kenshabby on September 19th, 2007 4:00 pm

Whom shall pitch the 9th, wonders I.

  91. msb on September 19th, 2007 4:01 pm

“J.J. threw before the game and his triceps was sore, it just wouldn’t loosen up, so we shut him down as a precaution,” McLaren said. “We don’t think it’s serious, but we couldn’t use him. When the game gets close there and you don’t have your big dog, it gets tougher.”

Putz said he felt some tightness in his triceps when he began warming up before Tuesday night’s game. “Better to be safe than sorry,” said Putz, who has 38 saves in 40 chances. “I couldn’t loosen it up. It was a precaution more than anything else.”

  92. AssumedName on September 19th, 2007 4:01 pm

    Dude…DaveN is killing me…

DaveN: “How about that? You give up 4 BBs, by definition you should give up at least one run…”

(off-mic) Rizzs: “Dude, Dave, they *did* give up a run.”

DaveN: “…Which is exactly what happened…”

  93. scott19 on September 19th, 2007 4:03 pm

Oh boy…for only about the second time this season, we get the privilege of being on Fox Saturday Baseball this week.

Of course, that will probably be the game where the Angies officially clinch the division at our expense!

  94. mr.smartypants on September 19th, 2007 4:03 pm

Anyone else notice that Street actually isn’t on the rubber when he pitches?

  95. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 4:04 pm

    Dave N. . .

  96. MedicineHat on September 19th, 2007 4:04 pm

  97. msb on September 19th, 2007 4:04 pm

“Jack Cust is getting the reputation as a terrible right-fielder” sez Dave Niehaus.

  98. AssumedName on September 19th, 2007 4:05 pm

But Ibanez is stellar in LF…he’s gritty.

  99. davepaisley on September 19th, 2007 4:05 pm

Cust’s fields his DH position pretty well…

  100. jlc on September 19th, 2007 4:07 pm

Blowers says JJ’s ready for the 9th.

  101. mr.smartypants on September 19th, 2007 4:07 pm

on the vidro strikeout, “that one painted the corner and Vidro knew it”

Silence as the K-zone thing shows that the pitch was about a foot outside.

  102. scott19 on September 19th, 2007 4:07 pm

AJ with a heads-up little piece of baserunning…

  103. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 4:08 pm

No way! Cust is awesome in RF.

  104. HamNasty on September 19th, 2007 4:08 pm

Burke saw 36 pitches today which coincidently is the same amount Yuni sees in a 2 week span.

  105. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 4:09 pm

Do they hold the entire field together with duct tape?

  106. aaronsawyer1 on September 19th, 2007 4:11 pm

I’m very impressed with Burke’s approach lately. Mariners are so far from where we were at the cather position pre-Johjima.

  107. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:11 pm

#74 I think Blowers looks at Jose Guillen, Ichiro and Ibanez and can’t figure out where to put Adam is all.

  108. mr.smartypants on September 19th, 2007 4:12 pm

96: has anyone ever called him on it? It’s technically a balk.

  109. davepaisley on September 19th, 2007 4:13 pm

Ichiro takes the batting title lead with that?

  110. kenshabby on September 19th, 2007 4:13 pm

4-hit day for Yuni makes me happy.

  111. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:13 pm

The guys mentioned last night Yuni has 15 GW RBIs. Right place, right time? Or something else?

And NOW Ichiro has the batting lead.

  112. davepaisley on September 19th, 2007 4:13 pm

    Guess so…

  113. mr.smartypants on September 19th, 2007 4:13 pm

    .35396 to Ordonez .35325

  114. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:14 pm

15 would put Yuni 3rd amongst AL players. sorry. had to qualify that.

  115. mr.smartypants on September 19th, 2007 4:15 pm

pretty good for a guy batting 9th, i guess

  116. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:16 pm

i believe a lot of RBI totals are the skill of the guys in front of you, but he does hit well for the #9 i’d say.

  117. carcinogen on September 19th, 2007 4:16 pm

    111, 114, 115…

It means nothing. Right place, right time is all.

  118. jlc on September 19th, 2007 4:16 pm

Gotta be happy for Lopez. Especially given how long it took him to get the hit.

  119. Karen on September 19th, 2007 4:17 pm

I hope 2 additional runs is enough to win this game.

  120. dcmarinerfan on September 19th, 2007 4:18 pm

Ichiro NOW is the batting leader! .354 to Magg’s .353

  121. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 4:18 pm

I think Sims (or is it Rizzs?) thinks Yuni’s day
is “really impressive”. He’s only said it about 37 times in this half-inning.

  122. George_Argyros_Lives on September 19th, 2007 4:21 pm

Ral used up his entire U’s quota with that slam yesterday.

  123. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:22 pm

so, raul plates 20% of his available rbi’s. that’s 8th in the ML with over 400 PAs. not too bad. …trying to find the other m’s.

  124. carcinogen on September 19th, 2007 4:23 pm

123, any clue what league avg. is?

  125. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:24 pm

    ichiro is 57th w/ 16.8%, beltre at 62nd @ 16.5%

  126. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:25 pm

#124 – let me see if I can set the filter for that.

  127. jefffrane on September 19th, 2007 4:25 pm

    Victory!

  128. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:27 pm

    woohoo…i love sweeping the a’s.

  129. shortbus on September 19th, 2007 4:29 pm

Other than getting to see some of the AAA guys play, the only thing left to root for this season is Ichiro’s run for the batting title.

So Ichiro do you want to win it…Ordoñez?

Thank you. Thank you very much.

  130. galaxieboi on September 19th, 2007 4:30 pm

i don’t think there’s filter for it. oh well. if it’s any help something like 250 guys have 400+ PAs. so, to have raul 8th, and ichiro and beltre around 60, that’s not too bad. they’d almost HAVE to take advantage of the rbi’s considering how little they walk.

  131. jlc on September 19th, 2007 4:32 pm

129 – How do you type the tilde?

  132. shortbus on September 19th, 2007 4:37 pm

You mean the “ñ?” I use Start / Programs / Accessories / System Tools / Character Map. Find the character you want, select, copy, paste.

  133. Enrique on September 19th, 2007 4:43 pm

131- I feel silly typing this on USSM, but the easiest way to type the tilde is alt+0241. Also, so I actually type something baseball related, take that Oakland, that’s what you get for booing Ichiro!

  134. carcinogen on September 19th, 2007 4:43 pm

132: That’s dedication to proper posting.

  135. north on September 19th, 2007 4:45 pm

Props to JJ. Oakland is a wreck, but Beane will figure something out by next spring.

I think the Yankees are toying with the O’s at this point. Second game in a row that the Yanks haven’t scored in the first.
I’ll predict that they’ll plate 10 by the end.

  136. Karen on September 19th, 2007 4:50 pm

Speaking of the Yankees, I’d sure like to have some of our pitchers and our “veteran hitters” find out what kind of magic elixir Mussina (old), Clemens (old, bum elbow and blisters), Jeter (bum knees and ankle), Giambi (plantar fasciitis), ARod (sore shoulder), and Damon (hamstrings) imbibed about halfway through the season.

They went from awful and old to rejuvenated and frisky and the Yankees we all know and…well, we all love to hate.

  137. Karen on September 19th, 2007 4:51 pm

Maybe it’s not magic elixir at all. Maybe those Yankee rookie pitchers and players donated some young blood to all the old guys… :)

But if you pay attention, character map tells you how to type it — down in the lower right corner of its status bar, when you have the character selected. For ñ it says Alt+0241 so — make sure the numlock is on — hold down the alt key and type 0241 on the numeric keypad. Voilà!

BTW, if you’re using one of the standard fonts in Character Map you can use the search box at the bottom to find characters. For example, searching for tilde produces all the characters with that accent; searching for super produces all the superscript symbols; searching for trade finds the trademark character, etc.

I believe those youth elixirs are named Cano, Cabrera, Hughes, Chamberlain, Kennedy …

How did the Yankees end up with so many top prospects? Oh yeah, everyone ahead of them in the draft doesn’t want to pay for talent (unless it is mediocre veteran “talent”).

138: I can never remember the codes for the ones I use, like the “tm” or “registered” or whatever. So I use the character map as a crutch.

And Oakland is the worst city in the world.

Thanks for the keyboard tricks, everyone.

Alt+164 works, too. Save yourself a keystroke!

on the postgame, a fellow waits on hold 30 minutes to say “if we want to get to the World Series … I know we got some talent in the minor leagues, I think we gotta go after Santana”

ñ – If you are using a Mac, it’s just as easy as [option-n] followed by “n”.

    ññññ

Macs are awesome when they aren’t managing the ballclub.

    81 wins. . .

How bittersweet at this point in the season when you are all but out of it.

I’ve got an old friend that lives in the bay area and she said they used to boo buhner something FIERCE all the time and she couldn’t figure out why.

  147. msb on September 19th, 2007 5:41 pm

I was thinking just this morning that if they hadn’t teased us by coming soooooooo close with both the WC & the division, we would have been thrilled with the guarantee that they’d end the year above .500, especially with the pitching imploding as it did.

146: I think part of the reason Bone got razzed as bad as he did down in Oaktown is that he seemed to tear them up on a pretty consistent basis.

huh? Cano was a non-draft free agent, Cabrera was a non-draft free agent, Hughes was a high-school pick expected to go mid-range in the 1st round without signability problems (which he did), Chamberlin was a sandwich pick who slipped due to injury concerns, Boras client Kennedy’s stock was said to have dropped a bit when drafted, but still went in the 1st round

A’s fans seem to have a tradition of booing the hell out of the opposition’s best players. I don’t think it’s malicious at all or that they even dislike those players (such as Ichiro); it’s just a funny way to root for your team.

  151. shortbus on September 19th, 2007 7:04 pm

144: I like games and don’t want to wait a year before they come out on PC for them to come out on Mac. If they ever do.

Let the religious wars begin (please note…I didn’t start this).

    Oakland fans have no toofs.

watching the tv repeat of the game, Blowers sounds pretty prescient when he announced early on that it was going to be an adventure for the outfielders today; good Felix quote:

The wind gusts of up to 26 mph were a challenge, and Hernandez said his breaking pitches took on a life of their own. McLaren compared the wind to the old days at Candlestick Park across San Francisco Bay.

“Oh, man, I don’t like that,” Hernandez said. “The wind was killing me today. That was tough. They gave me a five-run lead and I was just trying to hang in there. If I never see this wind again it would be good for me.”

  153. Joe on September 19th, 2007 10:22 pm

So Felix effectively was a knuckleball pitcher for the day. Just not an effective knuckleball pitcher.

It would be kind of cool if the wind was strong but steady. I bet with a bit of practice a pitcher could break off some wicked sliders.

When did the Ms trade for Andrew Jones and why was he playing leftfield?

  155. galaxieboi on September 20th, 2007 8:24 am

‘cuz andrew’s defence in center is way below ichiro’s now. =)
