Announcing the mods

DMZ · December 7, 2007 at 1:12 pm · Filed Under Site information

Hey all — some time ago, we put out an open call for people to help us with the comment moderation, and I wanted to follow up, because I realized it’s been well over a month. We got a great bunch of volunteers, names you’ll likely recognize from their contributions in the comments: Graham MacAree, Jeff Nye, Mike Snow, and Jim Thomsen. As a group, they’re about 4x more qualified to be moderating comments than I am.

So far, it’s been going swimmingly: I don’t ever log in to see 35 comments in the moderation queue, for instance, and no one’s gone insane with power.

I am happy and grateful to them, and to everyone who volunteered to pitch in, for their help in keeping the site manageable as it grows in fits and bursts.

Now to find some tech help!

…and no one’s gone insane with power

Uh, Derek, you just haven’t caught on to Thomsen’s scheme yet, have you…

    ;-)

  2. Jar on December 7th, 2007 1:30 pm

    yay! Good work new mods!

  3. Mo Vaughn Is My Hero on December 7th, 2007 1:37 pm

Watch out Derek. First it’s just being a mod, then they’ll take over the site and then they’ll be pretending to live your life!

  4. msb on December 7th, 2007 1:38 pm

I think they all deserve another copy of The Cheater’s Guide to Baseball.

  5. Mo Vaughn Is My Hero on December 7th, 2007 1:39 pm

    4. Nope, they’ll have to pay! We need this site to keep going!

  6. msb on December 7th, 2007 1:41 pm

a “Buy Me a Beer” day for the Mods?

  7. msb on December 7th, 2007 1:43 pm

say, New or Old Mods, do we need a new post for apre-meeting rumoring, which is still going strong in a fine and futile fashion?

  8. Mo Vaughn Is My Hero on December 7th, 2007 1:44 pm

    6. Or a “Buy Derek’s book or else you’ll have to give your modding privileges to Mo Vaughn Is My Hero” day! ;)

  9. Blastings Thrilledge on December 7th, 2007 1:47 pm

The mods are working so well I didn’t even know they were there.

  10. gwangung on December 7th, 2007 2:07 pm

No kidding. Best type of moderators…

  11. argh on December 7th, 2007 2:09 pm

It’s easy to be a moderator when nothing’s happening. Wait’ll Bavasi trades Jones and Morrow for the magic beans….

  12. joser on December 7th, 2007 2:24 pm

Or the Mitchell Report names some names. Or we get an influx of “You geeks on your computers just don’t appreciate that RBI and ERA are the only stats that matter” new arrivals. Or some trade thread degenerates into personal attacks, mass rosterbation, and McCall taffic commentary.

  13. Carson on December 7th, 2007 2:27 pm

11 – Agreed. The real test will be during game threads.

    Good job thus far, though!

  14. pensive on December 7th, 2007 2:40 pm

Is that Graham from the land of proper British?

Jim Thomsen had to be a no brainer. With his busy schedule great of him to help.

Everyone does far above and beyond great work.
Thank you all it is appreciated.

I agree regarding Beers (suggested by msb) if part of the arrangement it is OK.

  15. Joof on December 7th, 2007 2:44 pm

11: Well, the magic beans worked out in the end, since he got a goose that laid golden eggs and all that jazz. I think it would be more likely he traded Jones and Morrow for a pile of pebbles which someone told him were magic beans.

  16. Rusty on December 7th, 2007 2:47 pm

A big thanks to all the new Mods. Anything that helps the authors do what they do best is very much appreciated by me. Having been a mod in other forums, I know that it can be time consuming but it can also be fun.

    Cheers! To having fun!

  17. The Ghost of Spike Owen on December 7th, 2007 2:59 pm

Thank you, Mods, for saving us from ourselves. We promise to try not to drive you too nuts.

  18. jlc on December 7th, 2007 3:16 pm

Great choices for the new mods. Thanks all.

  19. terry on December 7th, 2007 3:17 pm

If a mod kills a post in the queue and no one is around to see it, did the post exist?

  20. Mo Vaughn Is My Hero on December 7th, 2007 3:19 pm

    19. Yes. Yes it doesn’t.

  21. scraps on December 7th, 2007 3:21 pm

    Yo mods.

  22. Thom Jimsen on December 7th, 2007 4:00 pm

I have to admit, I’ve barely been active … so 97 percent of the credit goes elsewhere. I’ll step up and do my fair share, though.

  23. Colm on December 7th, 2007 4:06 pm

What you all need now are some Lambrettas,
and a bunch of rockers with bike chains.

  24. Mike Snow on December 7th, 2007 4:11 pm

I’ll have to join Dave in passing on the beers – keep buying them for Derek, though.

  25. Jeff Nye on December 7th, 2007 4:12 pm

Thanks for the kind words, everyone!

From my point of view, I am doing this for the totally selfish reason that if the authors have to spend less time with moderation chores, they are free to give us more and better content. :)

And so far it has been pretty easy, so thank you to you all for having kept the discussion on an even keel and a high level.

  26. Beniitec on December 7th, 2007 4:21 pm

Good job :D All for one and one for all!

  27. lokiforever on December 7th, 2007 4:47 pm

Is corco in permanent mod queue? I know he got drunk a time or two and went crazy, but there was a time when I really enjoyed his off-beat contributions.

  28. Russ on December 7th, 2007 5:10 pm

Well…they are doing a good job but I, for one, would appreciate a tad more snarkiness.

  29. joser on December 7th, 2007 5:19 pm

What you all need now are some Lambrettas,
and a bunch of rockers with bike chains.

    And Sting to lead them!

  30. Thom Jimsen on December 7th, 2007 5:30 pm

Yeah, whatever happened to The McCall Kid?

  31. Graham on December 7th, 2007 7:41 pm

Is that Graham from the land of proper British?

    My secret’s out.

  32. CC Rosco on December 7th, 2007 8:09 pm

    Great jobs mods!

  33. joser on December 7th, 2007 8:53 pm

Yeah, whatever happened to The McCall Kid?

He’s been busy — and busy being Corco (he even spam-comments his own blog). He was popping up on LL now and then.

  34. Jeff Sullivan on December 7th, 2007 8:53 pm

Corco found another place to be insane. :|

    And Graham [is amazingly awesome].

  35. joser on December 7th, 2007 8:54 pm

    I thought Graham crackers?

  36. kentroyals5 on December 7th, 2007 8:56 pm

  37. pensive on December 7th, 2007 9:00 pm

Some of the more entertaining exchanges during the doldrums of 85 and 86 seasons were between Derek, Jim Thomsen and Corco.

Added much humor to those dreary Summers.

  38. msb on December 7th, 2007 10:26 pm

I’m guessing that was supposed to be the ‘05 & ‘06.

Otherwise Corco was a Typing Toddler.

  39. I won the meat jackpot!!!!1 on December 8th, 2007 2:14 am

    It’s a trap!

  40. pensive on December 8th, 2007 2:40 pm

msb–whoops. Could type was checking the new Mods, but had wine on my mind. Thank you for the correction.

Also, many thanks for all the information You share.
    It is appreciated.

  41. Graham on December 8th, 2007 2:50 pm

    And Graham [is amazingly awesome].

Thanks Jeff, you didn’t have to say that. I’m a big fan of yours as well.

  42. bobhooo on December 8th, 2007 3:35 pm

thanks guys for keeping your comments and moderations to a high level…keep up the good work

  43. joser on December 8th, 2007 4:07 pm

I think Corco’s kibo-esque multipostedness is unconstrained by space or time. I’m sure he was posting on ARPANET about traffic conditions in McCall in the 70s, before he was born.

Though I have to say, when I first saw that post I read it as “doldrums of 85 and 86 win seasons” and then I thought “Hey, that’s over .500, that’s a pretty good season. So wait, when was this again?”

  44. pensive on December 8th, 2007 4:49 pm

Perhaps the New Mods and any other Fan may shed a bit of light on the constant rumor out there.

Is there any sane reason to non-tender Broussard? It appears some teams are waiting for that out come. I have chosen to believe not true ,as Dave has written don’t believe much of that space filler.

Still feel concerned. Please enlighten me.

    Thank you.

  45. Deanna on December 8th, 2007 8:05 pm

I am a big fan of all of these mods as well. Good choices!

  46. pdb on December 10th, 2007 9:51 am

Good to see the mods finally got rid of those pesky rockers.

  47. Gomez on December 10th, 2007 10:49 am

Excellent, neutral choices that should do a great job of making Derek/Dave’s lives easier. I like it.

At the risk of highjacking this thread and taking it into non-mod-congratulatory territory (yay, new mods! good jog!), I can’t see the reason for it, unless after trying mightily hard to trade Broussard and/or Sexson, Bavasi discovers that Broussard has little to no value, and he is nonetheless determined to break up the 1B/DH logjam.

The flaw in that thinking is that it is based mostly on circular reasoning. The lack of market for Broussard seems driven in part by other teams’ impression that the M’s will non-tender him, and the M’s consideration of non-tendering Broussard basedd mostly on what they perceive as other teams’ lack of interest in trading for him. Thus it ultimately comes down to the same kind of risk-averse, mis-valuation that plagued the FO’s decision not to offer arb to Guillen. If they were smart enough to take a risk that they could move Broussard later if they tender him, they’d probably find that the market for him (and maybe even Sexson) improves slightly. Plus, it’s hard to see how one of the more productive left-handed bats on a team that lacks left-handed production is the expendable one.

  49. lokiforever on December 10th, 2007 2:43 pm

Too bad the M’s couldn’t emulate the Indians and use Broussard on a Platoon split with occaisional PH duties. I know it doesn’t solve the logjam, just my future distress of knowing another team will pick him up cheap, and extract maximum value.

  50. gwangung on December 10th, 2007 3:30 pm

If this makes Dave and Derek’s life easier, then this is a plus decision (and since this has looked pretty seamless, given the fact that we wouldn’t have known about the additions without being told about it, then it’s even better).

And if folks are interested in my favorite non-traditional GM candidate, check out this story on Kim Ng.

  51. smb on December 10th, 2007 3:30 pm

Perhaps we can fill the Indians’ need for a good LH bat for use in a platoon at first…maybe we can get that kid Cabrera in return, I hear good things about him, seems to be a little under the radar still…maybe they don’t know what they have and we can pull the proverbial wool over their eyes.

    Oh, wait.

  52. Graham on December 10th, 2007 3:42 pm

We didn’t trade Cabrera for Broussard.

  53. HamNasty on December 10th, 2007 4:10 pm

52- We some how managed to trade less then Broussard for Cabrera.

  54. smb on December 10th, 2007 4:59 pm

Kudos on your deduction, good sir, as my thinly veiled irony can be tough to detect. You’re right, we traded Cabrera for Perez, who is now out of the league. I facetiously posited that perhaps we could trade Broussard to Cleveland to get Cabrera back, but of course they’d have to be REALLY STUPID to accept that trade, wouldn’t they? Kind of reminds me of a certain team I root for…

  55. MKT on December 10th, 2007 6:11 pm

29: “What you all need now are some Lambrettas,
and a bunch of rockers with bike chains.

    And Sting to lead them!”

An Ace Face starter would certainly help the staff. But why would we want John Rocker?

(The American Cinematheque just had its annual 1960s Rock Film Festival titled “Mods and Rockers”. http://tinyurl.com/2ovzzt )

  56. joser on December 10th, 2007 6:54 pm

I had a friend who, after that movie was over, wanted to know why the kids on the scooters chanted/sang “We are the muds”? The accent was throwing him. But in the case of the M’s, it would be appropriate.

“Sting” would be a bad-ass nickname for a fastball pitcher, though. Well, it would’ve been had it not already got associated with jazzy-adult-contemporary VH1 muzak.

  57. WardP on December 10th, 2007 8:25 pm

    Thank you, mods..

What kind of tech help are you looking for?

  58. HamNasty on December 11th, 2007 9:13 am

Some good Felix gouge over at THT. It is about Fantasy value but the first half of the article deals with analysis if you are not the fantasy type.

    “I’m a mocker.”

    My name is Mok.
    Thanks a lot.
